Valdosta State University history professor (and Episodes 334 and 244 guest) Tom Aiello is back — this time for an intriguing look at one of the most politically and culturally charged nights in American sports history: Muhammad Ali's comeback fight against Jerry Quarry on October 26, 1970, in Atlanta. After nearly three and a half years in professional exile, Ali returned to the ring having lost far more than his world heavyweight title. His refusal to be drafted into the Vietnam War had stripped him of his license to box, cost him his prime athletic years, and turned him into one of the most polarizing figures in the country. By 1970, however, the nation had changed. Public opinion about the war had shifted, Ali's moral stance looked increasingly prescient, and the question was no longer if he would return — but where and on whose terms. Atlanta provided the answer. The fight was as much a civic and cultural event as a sporting one, staged before an audience that reflected the city's rising Black political, economic, and social leadership. Civil rights figures, elected officials, entertainers, and power brokers filled the arena, transforming the evening into a declaration of legitimacy and self-determination. Ali's presence — confident, defiant, unapologetic — symbolized a broader shift in who held cultural authority in America. Quarry, a skilled and respected heavyweight contender, became the necessary counterpart in Ali's rebirth. The fight itself ended swiftly, with Ali winning by third-round stoppage, but its significance far outlasted the final bell. Drawing from his new book "Return of the King: The Rebirth of Muhammad Ali and the Rise of Atlanta"Ali," Aiello helps us understand how this night fused boxing, politics, and spectacle — how Atlanta became the stage for Ali's return, and how the event marked a turning point not just in his career, but in the public embrace of a new, unapologetic vision of Black power and identity. On January 22, 2026, TikTok officially became an "American" company. The $14 billion deal, brokered by a consortium of politically connected investors, was supposed to end the years of national security concerns and protect the data of 170 million US users. Instead, the new TikTok USDS Joint Venture has stumbled out of the gate with a series of "technical glitches" that look suspiciously like targeted censorship. From the inexplicable blocking of the word "Epstein" in direct messages to the suppression of protest videos in Minneapolis, the new management's first week has raised a troubling question: did we actually solve the problem of algorithmic manipulation, or did we just ensure that the people doing the manipulating are the ones who helped broker the deal?This video examines the bizarre political U-turn that turned TikTok from a national emergency into a sweetheart deal for insiders. In this episode, Adnan discusses Professor Gabriel Rockhill's new book, Who Paid the Pipers of Western Marxism, v. 1 of The Intellectual World War. This incredibly important book contributes an insurgent foray, a guerrilla attack, against the imperial theory industry and its ideological work in the psychological, intellectual war that is central to the perpetuation of imperialist capitalism of our era. This first volume lays out a crucial method and approach, a way of performing intellectual history through dialectical and historical materialism, while exposing the relationship between the deep state/permanent state forces that have patronized a compatible left culture and the wider systemic network of institutions where intellectual and cultural production takes place. The work goes on to examine some important figures particularly in the so-called "Frankfurt School" and situate these thinkers/scholars and their work within the imperial theory industry. It is a fascinating conversation about an profoundly important new book. We look forward to further volumes in this important series on the Intellectual World War. Welcome! and Thank you for listening.  Do this, no, do that.  Coffee is bad.  Coffee is good.  Do these three things.  Take these medications or else.  It is no wonder that people just turn a blind ear and do nothing.  When you finally have hypertension, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, or dementia, the treatments are aimed only at the symptoms instead of the root cause.  When it comes to pain, people may think that is not such a bad thing because we do have pain medications that work well for short periods of time then cause havoc with side effects, tolerances and addiction.  The best plan of action is to stay healthy through sunlight, diet, and exercise.  I am going to address each of these today and probably every podcast because the list is endless on how you can keep yourself healthy.  In today's episode:  Hormone replacement for women: stay away, I'll tell you why Congestive heart failure: it is not a death sentence and does not have to be treated with a pharmacy of expensive medications. Dementia: prevent it through lifestyle changes now.  Diet matters and plants alone may not do the job.   Exercise: move all the ways and often.  I'll tell you more.
