We're getting excited, or rather unexcited this week, around a fading fad in the specialty coffee industry. The Perfect Daily Grind article, “Are coffee competitions moving away from Gesha?” provided a great insight about how after 16 years, ‘the shine is off the penny'. The World Barista Championship (WBC) competition coffee trend is moving away from Gesha, also known as Geisha, a delicious, delicately floral tasting coffee that is high scoring and has an increasingly hyped up cost. This move is indicative of a larger change in the industry towards different flavours, seasonality and diversification. Industry leaders and WBC competitors are driving this change with innovation, taking the pressure off the ‘superhero' producer and stepping up to support risky experimentation. We hope you enjoy this week's deep dive with us, your intrepid coffee adventure guides! In this episode, we were joined by our good friend and accomplished composer Nathan Hudson. He holds a BM in Trumpet Performance from the Schwob School of Music at Columbus State University, an MA in Composition from Stony Brook University, and a PhD also from Stony Brook University (read his full bio https://www.nathanhudsonmusic.com/bio (here)). We talked about what it means to major in music composition, and how a composer goes about finding their voice. We also talked about the creative process—where do ideas come from—and how he develops those ideas into full compositions. And since Nathan is also knowledgable about the worlds of specialty coffee and craft beer, we also talked about the art of those two worlds, and what it means to pursue the ideal. Welcome back to another episode of the “Just Forking Around” Podcast. Today, I would like to raise a toast to Sean Scott, the founder of Subculture Coffee of Southern Florida. I love coffee, and so, it seems, does the rest of the world. Scott doesn’t just love coffee; he loves a challenge. Making it big in the coffee industry is certainly full of them! Not only is the industry challenging, but sourcing coffee responsibly and maximizing its full flavor is full of unpredictable variables. How did he manage to find success? For Sean, coffee is just half of his business. People are Sean’s passion, and that is so evident in the way he talks about Subculture’s mission. Coffee is grounding. It’s safe. Sean knew he had something special where people of all kinds can come and feel safe and connected. I am so excited to share his deep knowledge of coffee itself, along with his passion for people.
