What about your ability to emote a song or interpret a piece is going to set you apart?”Trey McLaughlin was born in Augusta, GA, where he graduated from John S. Davidson Magnet School in 2002. It's the most popular golf tournament and one of the biggest sporting events in the world! With this episode coming out one day before The Masters 2024 tournament begins, I'm talking with a golf coach who works in the same city as that event...about golf fitness...strength and mental training for sports...his evolution from a young golfer in South Africa to a player then coach in the USA...and he give insight on hot topics about some of the biggest names at The Masters. (2:55) Augusta University (GA) Director of Golf and Men's Golf Head Coach Steven Paine and I kick it off by talking about how golfers are more athletic and stronger these days. How does that help/hurt? He has advice for amateur golfers about a few ways to strengthen your body to benefit your golf game. (9:19) Thanks to Steven's team and 14 others playing in an NCAA tournament in Augusta last weekend, all the players got to go watch the pros practice at Augusta National in the last few days. This South Africa native describes what it's like playing (and coaching) at that famous course, and the challenges it poses. (13:22) I go rapid fire with him about The Masters, with questions about reigning champ Jon Rahm...dangerous #1 Scottie Scheffler...Tiger Woods' chances...and McIlroy going after a career grand slam. Steven calls it that Rory will win in August, eventually. He also has some other insight you want to hear. Weather is also huge there and for golf, in general. Along with physical, (20:25) mental strength is paramount for golf. Steven explains how a sports psychologist helps their team - like with expectations, preparation. (24:00) How's it been for him coaching the last decade vs his career as a player? On and off the course, Steven also tries to live out his faith, which his players can see. They also are influenced by pros like Scheffler, who's outspoken about his Christian faith. (30:44) Balancing family and golf/career is also important. Your schedule matters. (33:40) Starting to play golf at age 10, Steven explains how he got a green blazer for representing South Africa as a junior...then coming to the USA where he almost led his golf team to a national championship in his first year at Columbus State University. Check out those stories and how/why he was temporarily a caddy on the PGA Tour. Steven closes out our chat with a little bit on the magic and mystery of The Masters, from unique aspects of the tournament to coaching tips and best food at Augusta. (44:33) I finish out the pod episode in prayer. Thanks for listening to the #RunTheRace podcast, which I hope you'll subscribe to! Share it with your friends. The newest directions in 21st Century trumpet performance are being explored and defined by Courtney Jones, an award-winning Bach performing and recording artist who has also emerged as a leading figure in contemporary performance and pedagogy, conducting, and service to inner-city youth through music outreach programs. An artist who transcends stylistic boundaries and in high demand as a clinician and adjudicator, Courtney has performed with classical ensembles and orchestras throughout the United States, internationally, and has won multiple solo awards and accolades through regional and national trumpet competitions. This journey began in Jones' hometown of Columbus, Georgia. While earning his Bachelor of Music degree at Columbus State University, Courtney performed with various Columbus State University ensembles and recorded with artists such as Jens Lindemann, Joseph Alessi, John Bruce Yeh, and the Columbus State University Wind Ensemble under the Naxos Music label. While completing his Master of Music degree in Trumpet Performance at Shenandoah Conservatory in Winchester, Virginia, Courtney studied under the instruction of J. Carlton Rowe, former Principal Trumpet of the “President's Own” United States Marine Band, Craig Fraedrich of The U.S. Army Blues, and performed as Substitute Principal with the Loudon Symphony Orchestra of Leesburg, Virginia. He also had additional studies with Steve Hendrickson of the National Symphony Orchestra Courtney conducted his doctoral studies at UCLA under the instruction of international soloist and former lead trumpet of the Canadian Brass, Jens Lindemann. During his time at UCLA, Courtney worked as a Teaching Associate for lecture courses and provided weekly lessons for university trumpet students under the direction of Lindemann. Winner of a Gluck Fellowship, Jones was then selected as the conductor of the UCLA Brass Ensemble during the latter part of his residency. His musicological research during this period explored 21st Century ideological and transcendental concepts of performance practice focusing on a lesser-known contemporary work of composer Frank Ticheli, The First Voice for Solo Bb Trumpet. The intention of this dissertation was to broaden the technical capabilities of 21st century performers and shed light on the ideological and philosophical foundations of Ticheli's composition. While the study is largely analytic and interpretive, the main purpose and goal is to help modern trumpet players develop more confidence in performing Ticheli's music and other contemporary compositions in related genres. Before completing his doctorate, Courtney was appointed as the Visiting Assistant Professor of Trumpet at the Voxman School of Music at the University of Iowa. During his two-year residency Jones served as the Principal Trumpet for the Iowa Faculty Brass Quintet, taught Graduate Brass Pedagogy and Literature, and served on recital and graduate committees. He was asked to lead the University's top performing Jazz Ensemble (director on leave) and produced an engaging performance concert by the University's Brass Ensemble (which had previously been inactive for a number of years) to showcase the importance of Brass Bands as an engaging training ground for solidifying technical and pedagogical facility for brass players. In addition to his applied obligations, Courtney performed with Orchestra Iowa, the Dubuque Symphony, and gave solo performances with both the Cedar Rapids Municipal Band and New Horizons Band. One of which was the Midwest Premiere of Kim Scharnberg's Travelogue for Eb Trumpet. Besides performing with well-known jazz and popular artists, he has shared the stage with famous artists or groups such as Kenny Burrell, B.B. King, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Rihanna, Lalo Schifrin, Vanessa Williams, Boy George and The Culture Club, Jennifer Cox, and Stevie Wonder. In addition to his solo performance career, Courtney has performed with the Golden States Pop Orchestra, the Southeast Symphony Orchestra, the Macao Orchestra (China), the Pasadena Orchestra, the Debut Orchestra, the Inspiravi Chamber Orchestra, the Gateways Festival Orchestra, the Orchid City Brass Band, the Oslo Philharmonic (Norway), the Long Beach Opera, the Chamber Singers of Iowa City, the Salt-River Brass Band, the Gateways Brass Collective, and most recently had his Carnegie Hall and Metropolitan Art Museum performance debut this past May in New York. His feature film and television credits include music performed for “Glee,” “Notes from Dad,” “Cougar Town,” and “Criminal Minds” among other productions listed under the media tab of his website. Prior to his appointment at Florida Atlantic University as the Assistant Professor of Trumpet & Artistic Director of Jazz and Chamber Ensembles, Jones was a Lecturer of Music at Columbus State University while recording his Solo CD project, “Between 2 Worlds,” at the Joyce and Henry Schwob School of Music. Between teaching and solo performing engagements, Dr. Jones has and continues to promote music education and instrumental performance in inner-city schools through the Music Outreach Program at UCLA, The Harmony Project of Los Angeles, Trumpets 4 Kids in Dallas, Texas, and the Nat King Cole Generation Hope, Inc. Each of these programs offers schoolchildren art-in-education opportunities. These programs are essential because they provide underserved, inner-city students, and communities with musical training and mentorship that would otherwise be inaccessible.

Executive Officer Robin Wallace with the Greater Columbus Home Builders Association (GCHBA) joins the Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio podcast to discuss the Columbus housing market. On the All About Real Estate segment, Wallace sits down with host Carol Morgan to chat about their unique Careers in Construction program and how to get involved in the community. Originally from Illinois, Wallace grew up in a small farming community where she lived a sheltered life that began her passion for workforce development. Wallace earned a degree in mass communications, started her career in radio and worked within the broadcasting industry for over 15 years. In 2003, Wallace became the marketing director of the Columbus Civic Center - where she managed and directed several events. Later, she became an executive officer at the Greater Columbus HBA in 2019 after being approached by a builder who encouraged her to apply! Wallace said, “I feel the Greater Columbus HBA is exactly where I need to be…I love the amazing people and association I get to work with!” The Greater Columbus HBA has developed Careers in Construction, a workforce development program designed for the younger generation interested in careers in the homebuilding industry. Although the GCHBA focuses on fifth graders, the Careers in Construction program is adaptable for kindergarten through 12th grade and can be used by any school district in the country. The development program provides an exploration day for students to discover jobs in engineering, architecture, interior design, electrical and other areas within the industry. Ensuring each student involved is interested and eager to learn about the homebuilding industry, teachers and academic advisors pair fifth graders interested in careers in construction with students from Columbus State University and a local high school program. After the exploration day, students are assigned to write an essay on what they learned about careers in construction. The academic advisors partner with the elementary English teachers to help students write and edit their work. Once the students finish their essays, they are given another assignment to create an illustration representing their writings. After final edits, the Greater Columbus HBA created a hard copy book detailing the student's projects. Wallace said, “The more you expose the students to careers in construction, the more they will remember.” For additional information on the Careers in Construction program and other happenings at the Greater Columbus HBA, follow along on Facebook and Instagram at @GreaterColumbusHBA. And so what I mean by that is I think a brand has to understand what their core competencies are, and they have to understand the value that they are creating for their customer. And what is debiting that value? So our mission statement as an organization is to do the heavy lifting of e-commerce so our clients can focus on what they do best."26:10 Your core values will enable technical competencies - Dusty: "There are certain core values that are absolute buzz saws. And if you run into that one, it's a buzz saw. You're not gonna make it here if you just don't believe that. So looking for people that are core-value-focused, are people-focused, they understand that what we do is done through the hard work of people, who have a get-stuff-done bias or just GSD, it was get it done, and are client-centric. So it was kind of four big buckets of things that I'm looking for that transcends or enables technical competency." Find out more about Dusty in the links below:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dustyholcomb/Website: https://redstagfulfillment.com/

255: Strategies for Answering the Toughest Interview Question

The Exclusive Career Coach

Happy Holidays! Whatever you celebrate – and whoever you have the blessing of celebrating with – I wish you Peace, Joy, Love, Laughter…and lots of good eats! I wanted to revisit a topic I covered way back in episode #82 on how to answer the “Tell me about yourself” interview question. That episode aired on June 5th, 2019, so I thought it was time to go over how I coach my clients to answer this question. There's a phenomenon call the primacy effect, which states that people remember whatever came first in a sequence. There's also the recency effect – people remember whatever came last in the sequence. Because the “tell me about yourself” question is asked first if it is asked at all, it holds considerable weight in the interviewer's mind. It also gives you the opportunity to start the interview off on the best possible foot. Here's what a lot of coaches will tell you: Tell them your work history, your strengths, why you want to work for them…they want you to make this a full-on sales pitch. Here's why I DON'T recommend this approach: I have interviewed hundreds of candidates over my years in higher education, and I had a structured interview process. Meaning: we asked every candidate the same questions and had a pre-determined scoring system to try to keep the evaluation process as fact-based and non-partial as possible. Not to mention: If you provide them with your life history, it's likely to be loooong and you might find the interviewer nodding off. Not a great start. In a structured interview process, which most employers use (often for legal reasons), they will ask you about your strengths. They will ask you why you want to work for them. They will ask you why they should select you over the other candidates. If you answer ALL these questions in your response to “Tell me about yourself,” you will have thrown off the cadence of the entire interview. The interviewers will have to scramble to evaluate you on questions they haven't yet asked you. Here's why I ALWAYS ask the “Tell me about yourself” question: I want to see what will come out of your mouth when asked such a broad, non-specific question. I have had candidates tell me about their abusive ex-boyfriend, their three preschool kids, their spouse's job, what's going on in their family of origin. Oh – and my personal favorite – how they can't come to work when they are tired. ALL THINGS I CAN'T ASK ABOUT. I also ask this question as a nice “soft pitch” before getting into the more technical or behavioral questions. I am surprised by how many are completely unprepared for this question. I'm also surprised by how many people answer in a way that puts the interviewer to sleep and/or overloads them with too much information. Here then, are my top 8 tips for developing your answer to the “tell me about yourself” question: 1.    Structure your answer in a past – present – future format.Give the interviewer a bit of information about where you came from, where you are now, and where you want to go.  2.    Stay at the 40,000-foot level. This is not the time to provide details about your accomplishments, work experience, or skills – they will ask questions about these things later.  3.    Keep it to 2-3 minutes.By staying at a 40,000-foot view and not getting into the weeds with specifics, it is easy to keep your answer to the “tell me about yourself” question to no more than 3 minutes. This will also help the interviewer keep on track with the questions he/she wants to ask without going over time and will keep the interviewer's interest high.  4.    Introduce your brand, right up front. If you've done the personal branding work I've talked about on other podcast episodes, you should be very aware of your personal brand. Here's your chance to introduce your personal brand right at the top of the interview…and reinforce it throughout the interview.  5.    Provide personal information. If the interviewer would be your new boss, he/she is going to want to get to know you as a total person. Even if the interviewer is from HR, giving the interviewer a sense of who you really are will help him/her to decide if you would be a good fit for the available position. The caveat here is that the personal information should be neutral or positive. Some examples: -A foreign language you are learning-A hobby you are passionate about (as long as it doesn't scream death-defying danger)-A personal goal you are working towards (such as building a home or training to run a marathon)-A recent travel experience What constitutes negative personal information? Here are some I've been given in actual job interviews: -Number and ages of children-Health conditions-Marital status (recently divorced)-The fact of, and reasons for, being recently terminated  These tips apply to the “tell me about yourself” question as well as the entire interview: 6.    Pay attention to nonverbal cues. One of the best ways to make sure you are proceeding with your answer to any interview question in the proper way is to watch for nonverbal cues from the interviewer. Note that I'm not saying there is a “right” or “wrong” answer to an interview question. What I'm saying is that sometimes candidates misunderstand the interview question and aren't providing the interviewer with the information he/she is looking for. It is perfectly acceptable to stop, ask the interviewer for clarification on the question or to verify that you are providing him/her with the desired information.  7.    Relax.You may think it is impossible to relax in an interview, but I promise it will serve you well to develop this ability. I'm not suggesting that you be so relaxed that you're practically asleep, but rather that you aren't so tense that you are struggling to communicate effectively and look like you are about to jump out of your own skin. This first question is a great opportunity to you to relax into the interview so you can put forth your best effort.  8.    Let your personality shine through. Many people I have interviewed over the years were stiff, all business, and showed no sense of humor. If you have a sense of humor – let it shine through, as long as you remain in good taste. If you love to do nice things for your co-workers to create camaraderie and a sense of team – tell the interviewer about this. If you are too buttoned up because you think this should be a serious affair – and you are naturally a fun and personable creature – the interviewer isn't really getting to know you. In other words, there's a bit of false advertising going on.  An ExampleI thought I'd end with my “Tell me about yourself answer.” We'll pretend I'm applying for a job back in higher education as Director of Career Services. “One of the most important things to know about me is the breadth of experience, skills, and credentials I bring to the table. “As you've probably already seen on my resume, I spent 10 years as Director of the Career Center at Columbus State University, followed by 12 years in the same role at Truman State University. At Columbus State, I led efforts to separate career services from the Counseling Center and became the new entity's first Director. In that capacity, I created the university's cooperative education program, which was successful enough to be able to hire a full-time co-op coordinator the next year. “At Truman, I took a career center that was underutilized and underwhelming into a highlight of the university – touted in admissions material and to employers and donors. When I was hired, my boss told me that if I could turn the Career Center at Truman into a showpiece for the university, I would have worked a miracle. When he left Truman for another university, he told me I had worked a miracle. In 2012, I left higher education to work in my practice full-time. In this capacity, I have worked with clients on all continents except Antarctica on resume writing, LinkedIn profiles, job search strategy, interview techniques, salary negotiations, and career management. I am one of 23 Master Resume Writers in the world, and a Certified Job Search Strategist, Certified Executive and Leadership Development Coach, and Master Practitioner of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. While I have loved owning my own business, I am excited about the prospect of leading a team again – and being part of a team as well. I am motivated to help each team member reach their full potential and create a team that is cohesive and engaged. On a personal note, I am an avid reader and love to listen to true crime podcasts. I have two hound dogs who love to take me for walks.” Time: 1:50  Are you in the wrong job that chips away at you every day? The CareerSpring document and coaching program will help you find a job that uses your zone of genius, recognizes your value, and pays you what you're worth.  If you're ready to take your job search to the next level by working with a highly experienced professional with a track record of client success, schedule a complimentary consult to learn more:  https://calendly.com/lesaedwards/zoom-meetings2

#123: Viral Pic Couple Are Missionaries at UGA, as College Football Begins

College football season is here! And a couple who works on the campus of the reigning national champions, the University of Georgia, join me on the “Run The Race” podcast – which if you're not subscribed to, what are you waiting for? This husband and wife also went viral several years ago, with haters helping them gain some fame on national TV. (2:27) Chris and Ashley Reed, who met at Columbus State University, are both on staff at Chi Alpha campus ministry at UGA – that is Greek, by the way, for “Christ ambassadors.” They give us a quick take of what the national organization is all about, essentially helping students find their faith and community. (5:11) People may also know this couple from a selfie picture at a cousin's wedding in 2015, while they were dating, that a friend also shared on social media, getting 1.4 million views overnight and half a million comments – a lot of mean ones about the “mismatched couple” and Chris being overweight and rumors about disability because he was making a funny face. She responded to the haters in a new post online, which also got tons of views. All of this got them on CNN and Good Morning America, where they had an opportunity to share their faith and forgive the people who made mean comments, like Jesus would. They both feel like they've been called (13:55) to do ministry on UGA's campus, where there are 30+ faith-based groups for 45,000 students. It's been a step of faith for Chris and Ashley…but they know what it's like to be scared going to college, party temptations, facing newfound freedom vs. Christian “rules” so they want to make following God cool - from scavenger hunts to trivia to Georgia traditions. The Bible also talks about the early church doing life together! (24:01) Go Dawgs! As the reigning NCAA football champs, can football be a platform for sharing faith and getting more exposure for groups like Chi Alpha? This couple describes how they also get attention through giving out lots of free stuff and “tabling” random questions, which also causes some backlash and rejection. (29:55) Married almost 6 years, Chris and Ashley are open about balancing their marriage with ministry and working together. They also get to model love for each other – and Jesus – for today's college students who may be looking for Mr/Mrs. Right. (35:25) A sense of humor is also what the opposite sex is looking for. These too laugh at each other and at life, even when it gets hard. Gotta have fun! Finally, we discussed (40:20) if things are back to “normal” now on campus. Ashley moved to Athens and started working at UGA just 2 weeks before the COVID pandemic hit. They also raise their own money as missionaries on this Georgia campus, saying God provides! If you'd like to help them, go to: https://www.globalstudentinc.com/reed?fbclid=IwAR3PwJWatxgicmlORXlHVhASG6B3tXmkK6HqbPHO6tp4HGqqTiwfWTuDaAg. Chris and Ashley closed the episode in prayer, followed by my “Parting Gift” from the Bible. Thanks for listening to the #RunTheRace podcast! Also, write a quick review about it, on Apple podcasts.
