CUJO is a podcast about culture in the age of platforms. Episodes drop every other week, but if you want the full experience, we recommend signing up for a paid subscription. Paid subscribers also get access to our CUJOPLEX Discord and The Weather Report, a monthly episode series where we take stock of where the cultural winds are blowing and tell you what's rained into our brains. What does it take to chronicle contemporary culture through the ancient medium of theater, and what new insights can it unlock about the present? On this episode, we talk with playwright, author, and critic Matthew Gasda about his recent staging of The Last Days of Downtown, the third and final installment of his “Dimes Square” trilogy, which chronicles the aspirations, anxieties, attentional antics, and creative rivalries of New York's post-pandemic downtown scene. Matthew joins us to discuss his role leading a resurgence of DIY theater in NYC — including as the founder of an institution called Brooklyn Center for Theater Research — and how he's used the medium to capture subcultures in real time, before they've even had a chance to register their place in history. We talk about the downtown's scene's polarizing legacy and where it fits within previous eras of NYC counterculture, what happens when you and your work become part of the story you're trying to tell, and how the world of the trilogy acted as a harbinger of culture in the decade to come.Visit the Brooklyn Center for Theater Research for upcoming plays from MatthewFollow Matthew on SubstackRead Matthew's novels and plays This is a public episode. Across the American West Coast in the 1980s, the burgeoning punk rock and skinhead scenes were much more than just raw music and counterculture fashion — they quickly became contested ground in an ideological battle against white supremacy. Neo-Nazi groups actively targeted these subcultures to recruit alienated kids, and anti-racist punks were forced to step up in response, organizing grassroots community defense networks, confronting extremist infiltration and building alternative spaces rooted in inclusion. Those strategies — forged in clubs, at shows and within tight-knit local scenes — offer a vital, real-world blueprint for confronting today's mainstream political crises, according to a recent panel discussion at UC Berkeley. The May 3 event, which headlined the second annual Jewish Arts and Book Fest hosted by the Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life, began with a screening of We've Been Here Before, a 2023 documentary short chronicling these subcultural struggles. Following the film, the program brought together the film's director, Jacob Kornbluth, and anti-racist activists Eric Ward, who's featured in the film, and Dion Garcia to explore how lessons from that fringe resistance can help heal a fractured modern society. For Ward and Garcia, the history of that resistance is deeply personal. In their youth, protecting music scenes from infiltration meant building solidarity and making sure marginalized voices were not pushed out. Yet Garcia said that looking back on the intensity of that era, he also remembers its emotional toll.“Hate is a horrible word and it's a horrible thing to carry,” Garcia said. “I don't like carrying that.”The speakers argued that the same divisive tactics that targeted 1980s youth have now mutated into mainstream public discourse. Ward, a leading expert on organized hate, explained that modern antisemitism functions on the far right as a "racialized other,” scapegoating Jewish communities as “puppet masters” of social grievances. Today, Ward warned, society is trapped in a dangerous "sectarian moment" where nuance is erased in favor of absolute polarization, particularly surrounding global conflicts."No one wants nuance," Ward said, critiquing how people today build political identities out of distant tragedies. He noted that such political theater often comes "at the expense of the most actual vulnerable, Israelis and Palestinians, who still have to live in the real world each and every day."Ultimately, the talk underscored that the path forward requires looking past ideological purity and reclaiming the cultural spaces where lonely or alienated individuals seek community. True resistance to racism and antisemitism, the speakers concluded, lies in a shared commitment to contesting these complicated spaces, finding "strange allies" across different backgrounds and strengthening the foundation of an inclusive democracy."I would argue this alliance between those of us who identify in the mainstream and empathy for people who are existing in these kind of fringe subcultures is something that I think we could all work on," said Kornbluth. "I think it's something new to a lot of folks who are thinking about where and how to fight back ... but I think it's a little piece to how we can heal ourselves." Erik Torenberg speaks with Marc Andreessen about the state of AI, media, and the broader cultural and economic shifts shaping the internet. They discuss how narratives around AI, from fear to hype, are influencing public perception, and why real-world usage tells a very different story. The conversation covers AI's impact on jobs and productivity, the rise of “AI-native” builders, and why increased capability tends to expand work rather than eliminate it. Andreessen also examines how companies are adapting, from restructuring teams to rethinking roles around more generalist “builders.” They also explore the changing media landscape, from the dynamics of influence and information to the breakdown of traditional authority, and what it means for trust, culture, and generational attitudes. Along the way, they touch on topics ranging from institutional power to emerging internet subcultures, offering a wide-ranging look at how technology is reshaping both systems and society. Are vampires purely creatures of myth—or do they represent something deeper within culture, history, and human belief? In this fascinating episode, Joseph Laycock takes us into the world of vampires, not as supernatural beings lurking in the shadows, but as a subject of serious academic study. Drawing from his research into religion, folklore, and subcultures, Laycock explores how vampire legends have evolved over time and how they continue to influence modern society. From ancient myths to contemporary communities that identify with vampirism in symbolic or lifestyle terms, he examines what these beliefs reveal about identity, ritual, and the human imagination. This episode goes beyond the gothic stereotype, offering a nuanced look at how stories of vampires intersect with religion, psychology, and cultural expression. Why do these legends endure across centuries and continents? And what can they teach us about fear, transformation, and the boundaries between life and death? Join us for a thought-provoking and enlightening conversation that explores the vampire not just as a figure of legend—but as a powerful symbol embedded in human culture and consciousness.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-x-zone-radio-tv-show--1078348/support.Please note that all XZBN radio and/or television shows are Copyright © REL-MAR McConnell Meda Company, Niagara, Ontario, Canada – www.rel-mar.com. Jamie Bartlett| Internet Subcultures and the Social Media Rage Machine Jimmy interviews writer and podcaster Jamie Bartlett about his hard-to-define career researching internet culture, subcultures, and online-driven movements, shaped by early work at Demos and a fascination with being an early “expert” on emerging online worlds like the darknet. Bartlett explains how he gains access to difficult contributors through detective-like research and by maintaining fairness and integrity, avoiding overt political positioning to reach audiences across outlets including the BBC, Telegraph, Guardian, Spectator, and varied podcasts. They discuss how algorithms reward emotion, distort perceptions of public opinion, and turn politics into clip-farming, while long-form podcasts can restore deeper listening. This week's blogpost - https://bahnsen.co/4rAtQvD Trevor Cummings, hosting with a lost voice, interviews blog author Brett Bonecutter about his COVID-era entry into the options-trading subculture after being taught by a former bond trader. Brett describes early euphoric gains from a single strategy in a favorable market that led to confirmation bias, followed by significant losses when conditions changed and he wasn't nimble enough to adapt, noting how traders often highlight winning trades while ignoring the full sample. They explain options as time-bound contracts to buy or sell an underlying asset (calls and puts), including how contracts themselves can be traded, and warn that complex combinations can create severe or even unlimited losses, citing a widely reported case of a confused young options trader who took his life and examples like meme-stock squeezes. They contrast investing vs speculating, critique overreliance on technical analysis, and conclude options are best for professional hedging, not retail “tinkering,” despite get-rich-quick allure. 00:00 Welcome and Setup 01:07 Subcultures and Finance 02:32 COVID Options Rabbit Hole 05:32 Highlight Reels and Bias 08:34 Big Wins Then Losses 10:25 Options Explained Simply 15:07 Derivatives and Real Danger 19:28 Casino vs Investing 21:42 Technical Analysis Debate 29:30 Selling Puts Insurance Analogy 35:56 Get Rich Quick Temptation 37:19 Final Warnings and Wrap Links mentioned in this episode: http://thoughtsonmoney.com http://thebahnsengroup.com

Trust has always been the invisible architecture beneath brands, institutions, and markets. But today, that architecture is shifting. For the past decade, we've moved through distinct eras of trust. First came consequence brands, which positioned themselves around measurable moral impact. Then came emotion-led brands, where what felt right became the guiding force. Now we appear to be entering a third era, where trust is built not on credentials or transparency, but on visible sacrifice and embodied virtue. As institutional continuity weakens and shared reality fragments, credibility reorganizes around individuals. “Proof of knowing” carries less weight than “proof of doing.” Degrees, affiliations, and institutional endorsements are no longer sufficient signals. Instead, audiences look for lived experience, personal risk, and skin in the game. At the same time, many of the platforms designed to increase transparency have reduced everyday vulnerability. But true trust requires vulnerability. As a result, trust is reemerging in smaller, more intimate spaces where shared stakes and emotional exposure create safety. In this episode of Unseen Unknown, Jasmine and Jean-Louis explore how trust systems evolve, why incremental positioning feels insufficient in the current cultural climate, and what this shift means for founders and brands trying to remain credible. When trust becomes the product itself, the rules change. By now, you've probably seen it: someone you follow making a joke about "maxxing" or getting "mogged" on your timeline. These terms come from a terminally online subculture spun off of the so-called "manosphere" known as "looksmaxxing." It's hyper-focused on the shallowest dimension of masculinity: physical appearance.Clavicular, the subculture's breakout star, has been popping up everywhere lately, including in The New York Times. But most of this discourse has overlooked the toxic roots of "looksmaxxing" and the misogynist ideology at its core. This week, researcher Annie Kelly joins Jared and Mike to help fill that gap. It's time to revisit one the best known goth bands of all time...The Sisters of Mercy. I previously covered them about 10 years ago and thought it would be interesting to take a fresh look at a band with a legacy unlike many others. Led by Andrew Eldritch with the assistance of both man and machine, it's a journey both unique and winding as the creative control and rockstar lifestyles shape the way they interact with the world. POWW Subculture Valentine's Day Part 2: INS & OUTS OF LOVE. This episode moves us through some stages of love, for your post Valentine's weekend.
"Happy Birthday, Peter Hook" There's nothing about Peter Hook that I can tell you you don't already know, so let's just do a refresher run through his musical CV. In the late '70s Hook formed Joy Division with childhood pal Bernard Sumner after the two friends saw the Sex Pistols play in Manchester. The band only put out two albums and one of those albums, the legendary Closer was put out two months after the band had ceased to b,e due to the suicide of singer Ian Curtis on the eve of Joy Division's debut US/Canada tour. Rechristened New Order and consisting of the remaining members of Joy Division plus keyboardist Gillian Gilbert, New Order blended jittery post-punk rhythms with dance music. The result? Well, you know the result. They were one of the biggest bands of the '80s, spawning hits like True Faith, The Perfect Kiss, Subculture and Blue Monday, which was the biggest selling 12-inch of all time. It might still be. New Order dominated the '80s, but the '90s weren't too shabby—they had a #1 UK hit with World In Motion in 1990 and they had their biggest US hit with “Regret” in 1993. They kept crushing it, putting out Get Ready in 2001 and collaborating with Billy Corgan and Bobby Gillespie of Primal Scream. They were given the Godlike Genius award at the 2005 NME awards and got nominated for a Grammy in 2006 for Guilt Is a Useless Emotion. Then things got a bit sour, with Hook leaving the band in 2007 and forming his own outfit Peter Hook and the Light, a band that featured his son Jack and much to his fans delight, revisited the Joy Division and New Order songbooks. Over the course of his career Hook has worked with The Stone Roses, and Perry Farrell, he toured with the Durutti Column, put out albums with Revenge and Monaco and wrote one of the best music books ever: Substance; Inside New Order. This is a partial list, btw. Almost a partial partial list because when it comes to Peter Hook, there's a lot of ground to cover. But these are the basics. Do a deeper dive after you hear the show—the guy is a titan. As for his split with New Order and his boyhood pal Bernard, we don't have time to go over the legal end of that dissolution, so let's just say this. If you're hoping for a reunion you're wasting your good hope energy. Not going to happen. As a bassist, he plays with an authoritative blend of prowl and sting and not only is he one of the all time greats, he also happens to be a nice guy. This chat covers his fractured friendship with Sumner, why the New Order/Joy Division songbooks appeal to fans across generations and what Hooky has learned from his old material. www.peterhookandthelight.live www.bombshellradio.com www.embersarts.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.alexgreenbooks.com Stereo Embers The Podcast Twitter: @emberseditor Instagram: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

In this episode, a markedly dissociative one, we zoom in on our featured Food and Operator, the red hooded white robed yellow...leafed Sekihan, who will soon not be with us as she ascends to the heavens, and the fantastically flowery fuscia floutist Hibiscus the Purifyer, a normal girl with a very abnormal instrument, and we sing a lyrical question: If you've travelled down the road and back again, can I thank you for being a bean? Then, one right makes two wrongs with Carnelian, Tomahawk Steak, and Dusk, asking: If you're part of a certain subculture, how rude can you be to your fellow, erm, subculture participants? The episode follows AMBUSH's evolution from jewelry made for friends to a brand that Yoon describes as a platform, shaped by experimentation rather than a rigid business plan. She speaks candidly about learning in real time, being paid to learn, and why every job and skill eventually becomes useful. From research as a daily practice to AI as a tool that can accelerate creative work without replacing it, Yoon makes a case for staying open, resisting the urge to live in boxes, and trading horizontal expansion for deeper, more human storytelling. Her definition of what feels contemporary now is simple and powerful, pursuing who you are fearlessly, and staying uniquely human in a world increasingly driven by algorithms. Episode Highlights: A childhood shaped by movement and solitudeGrowing up between Korea, Hawaii, California, and Seattle, Yoon reflects on how constant relocation fostered independence, imagination, and an ability to adapt quickly to new environments. Solitude as a creative advantageTime spent alone became a space for imagination rather than isolation, laying the groundwork for curiosity, inner confidence, and long-term creative resilience. Subculture as a formative educationFrom Seattle's grunge era to Tokyo's club scene, Yoon describes how underground culture, music, and nightlife taught her more about identity and community than any formal training. Discovering design through curiosity, not strategyHer path into graphic design and later fashion emerged organically through interests in magazines, presentation, and visual storytelling, rather than a predefined career plan. Being paid to learn as a philosophyYoon frames early jobs, including PR and corporate design work, as opportunities to learn on someone else's dime, reinforcing her belief that no experience is wasted. AMBUSH as an organic unfoldingWhat began as jewelry made for friends evolved naturally into a brand, then into a platform, driven by experimentation, relationships, and responding to real demand rather than market forecasting. Tokyo as a creative accelerantMoving to Japan exposed Yoon to layered subcultures, cross-pollination between music and fashion, and a culture open to hybridity, shaping AMBUSH's DNA. Fashion as communication, not productYoon describes fashion as a visual language for expressing identity and connection, rather than simply clothing or commercial output. AI as a tool, not a replacementShe speaks openly about embracing AI as a powerful assistant that can accelerate research and execution, while insisting that creative intent and thinking cannot be outsourced. What feels contemporary nowFor Yoon, being contemporary today means fearlessly pursuing who you are, resisting algorithmic pressure, and staying grounded in humanity, curiosity, and purpose rather than chasing scale. We're all secondhand shoppers these days. But where? How? And more importantly, why?Online marketplace platforms have grown exponentially (making billionaires of some of the founders in the process) but there's also a surge happening IRL, where the indie dealers hold the power. And the more niche the better. In this episode we're exploring how preloved fashion is booming in physical spaces, and in particular the new-style, curated vintage and archive fashion markets. Is it about sustainability or status, or both? Subcultures, nostalgia, a yearning for authenticity in our increasingly disconnected world, sheer fun - it all comes into play. Also covered: What's with the curated obsession? Don't we love a rummage anymore? What's driving new gen uptake? Could we be seeing a backlash against fake AI vibes? What are the dealers looking for? Is it okay to haggle? Also, has decluttering fallen out of favour? Is it more about restyling what's already in your wardrobe? SO MANY QUESTIONS! Joshua Citarella is an artist, writer, and cultural researcher focused on internet subcultures and online politics. How well do we understand our relationship to sex? According to Oliver Davis and Tim Dean, authors of the new book Hatred of Sex (University of Nebraska Press, 2022), we tend to overlook the “unpleasurable pleasures” that are integral to sex. Sex undoes us, destabilizes us, takes us out of ourselves. Many of our 21st century cultural products—Queer Theory, traumatology, intersectional studies—secretly “hate” sex for these very reasons and build such hatred into their ideas. In our interview, Davis and Dean explain why a full understanding and experience of sex require our reckoning with these truths, and they offer conceptual tools for undertaking such a reckoning. This interview is a must-listen for anyone curious about the unspoken dimensions of sex. Oliver Davis is a professor of French studies at the University of Warwick. He is the author of Jacques Rancière and editor of Rancière Now. Tim Dean is James M. Benson Professor in English at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is the author of Unlimited Intimacy: Reflections on the Subculture of Barebacking and Beyond Sexuality. Eugenio Duarte, Ph.D. is a psychoanalyst and clinical psychologist practicing in Miami. He treats individuals and couples, with specialties in gender and sexuality, eating and body image problems, and relationship issues. He is a graduate and faculty of William Alanson White Institute in Psychiatry, Psychoanalysis, and Psychology in New York City and former chair of their LGBTQ Study Group; and faculty at Florida Psychoanalytic Institute in Miami. He is also a contributing author to the book Introduction to Contemporary Psychoanalysis: Defining Terms and Building Bridges (2018, Routledge) and has published on issues of gender, sexuality, and sexual abuse. A Note from JamesI've always loved books where a journalist gets so deep into a subculture that they become part of it. Magic Is Dead by Ian Frisch is one of those. He starts out covering a secret society of magicians—“The 52,” named for the cards in a deck—and ends up becoming one of them.It reminded me of other favorites like Word Freak (Scrabble), The Game (pickup artists), and Moonwalking with Einstein (memory champions). I love that genre of participation—when curiosity turns into obsession and then into mastery.Ian's journey pulled me right in. He didn't just report on the world of magicians; he lived in it, practiced card tricks until his hands hurt, and learned how obsession, storytelling, and performance shape every great craft. Talking to him made me think about how every one of us could benefit from being part of more than one “world”—to have different lives, different subcultures where we're known and respected for something unique. That's real diversification. Not just financial, but personal.Episode DescriptionIn this episode, James talks with journalist and author Ian Frisch about his book Magic Is Dead: My Journey into the World's Most Secretive Society of Magicians and what it means to go all-in on obsession. They explore the underground network of modern magicians reinventing the art for the social-media age—tattoos, streetwear, viral videos, and all—and what these creative subcultures can teach the rest of us about mastery, storytelling, and risk. It's a conversation about transformation: how curiosity becomes discipline, and how the principles behind sleight of hand apply to persuasion, business, and everyday life. What You'll LearnWhy obsession—not balance—is often the key to getting great at somethingHow social media reshaped the art and culture of modern magicThe real psychology behind deception, storytelling, and human connectionHow magicians build trust with skeptical audiences (and what leaders can learn from it)Why belonging to multiple “worlds” or subcultures creates resilience and happinessTimestamped Chapters[00:00] Introduction — Obsession as a superpower [03:00] A Note from James — The journalist who became a magician [06:00] Participatory journalism and the power of total immersion [10:00] What makes this genre work: transformation and obsession [11:30] Discovering the new generation of social-media magicians [14:00] From top hats to tattoos: how magic reinvented itself online [18:30] The challenge of trust when magic meets video editing [20:30] The return of live magic and the human reaction [23:30] Subcultures, hierarchies, and belonging [26:00] Magic as a social tool for outsiders [29:00] How magicians train for a decade to master their craft [37:00] Ian's own training: learning sleight of hand as an adult [40:00] The poker connection and card control secrets [44:00] Why mystery matters more than the trick itself [47:00] Storytelling, psychology, and reading people [52:00] Applying magician skills to real-world persuasion [54:00] Comedy, showmanship, and performance overlap [55:30] The secret societies of magic and “The 52” [58:30] Competition, creativity, and the economics of exclusivity [01:00:40] How Ian earned his place as the “Two of Clubs” [01:03:00] Inventing a new trick and becoming part of the storyAdditional ResourcesMagic Is Dead: My Journey into the World's Most Secretive Society of Magicians by Ian FrischIan Frisch's WebsiteRelated titles discussed:Word Freak by Stefan FatsisMoonwalking with Einstein by Joshua FoerThe Game by Neil StraussThe Biggest Bluff by Maria KonnikovaMentioned magicians:Chris RamsayDaniel MadisonLaura LondonDoug McKenzieSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Should there be a moral panic about young people being radicalized online? One focal point for investigators in the Charlie Kirk case is the messages that were found carved on the bullet casings believed to have belonged to the shooter. They contain several seemingly sarcastic, irreverent phrases that are common in gaming and online communities. To help decipher what some of these might mean, William Branham spoke with Ryan Broderick, host of the Panic World podcast. PBS News is supported by - https://www.pbs.org/newshour/about/funders.
