Tonya Cornett thought she would end her career at 10 Barrel Brewing. She had joined the Bend, Oregon-based craft brewery in 2012, piled up competition medals for her beers and created a following at the brewery. She thrived as the brewery's R&D brewmaster before and after its 2014 sale to Anheuser-Busch InBev (A-B). But then Tilray Brands acquired 10 Barrel and seven other brands in 2023. A year later, Tilray laid off Cornett and members of her team in a move that shocked many within the industry. On this week's Brewbound Podcast, Cornett discusses her journey over the last decade-plus and her next chapter with Upp Liquids, a new venture in the rebranded Immersion Brewing space. Cornett shares her experiences at A-B, how 10 Barrel and her role changed under Tilray's ownership and her goals with Upp moving forward. As the Great American Beer Festival (GABF) kicks off in Denver, Cornett also explains how medals have served as a stamp of approval throughout her career and why they remain relevant. Cornett's beers have received numerous competition medals throughout the years, including 28 medals at the Brewers Association's (BA) GABF and World Beer Cup. That doesn't include 10 Barrel's 2024 clean sweep of the German-style Sour Ale category during the 2024 GABF competition. Before the interview, the Brewbound team runs through the latest headlines, including a big leadership shakeup at Molson Coors and Constellation Brands' struggles as its largest consumer base remains under pressure.

Guest When I sat down with Brew Moscarello, founder of Trico Unlimited, a Vermont-based fly fishing guiding and instruction service, it was clear that his story is about more than guiding—it's about a lifelong relationship with the outdoors. Drawn to Vermont by both snowboarding and fly fishing, Brew found himself immersed in the mountains and rivers that continue to inspire him today. His journey eventually led him into the Orvis organization, where he has turned his passion for the water into a vocation—while still maintaining a deep connection to the slopes. Summary Brew's approach goes beyond technical instruction—he emphasizes presence, patience, and the Zen-like qualities of being on the river. For Brew, guiding is as much about teaching and creating memorable experiences as it is about catching fish. He differentiates himself by leveraging his decades of experience on the Battenkill River, his deep ties to landowners and the community, and a strong instructional style tailored to each client's needs. Conservation and education are central to his mission, from working with the Battenkill Watershed Alliance to coaching a new high school fly-fishing club. Ultimately, Brew sees fly fishing as a way to connect people with nature, themselves, and each other, creating moments of joy, focus, and gratitude that extend far beyond the catch. The Key Takeaway Brew's fly fishing and guiding practice is less about catching fish and more about cultivating presence, patience, and connection with nature and others. Developing respect for the sport, the environment, and education is at the heart of what he does. Welcome back T&J fam! As we promised, we have brought back the Dirty Brew Review for the month of October. This week we throw it back to the only coffee we can start fall with; Pumpkin Spice Latte. Feel free to send us coffee ideas as we plan to use some listener requested coffees the rest of this month. Today, we also learn the difference between Deja Vu and Deja Reve, so buckle your seat belts for that discussion. Lastly, we dive into a discussion on the difficulty American Christians seem to have coexisting with "others". We discuss whether we, as Christians, are called to coexist and debate how much our founding fathers may have put us on the path to power and not coexistence. Enjoy!

Cast & Brew, 10min., Spain/USA Directed by Priscilla Zanni Bertran Cast & Brew is a comedy about an AD trying to manage a film set where coffee has been delayed, and the lead actor, Bruce, refuses to do any takes without his coffee first. Chaos erupts when Craft Services informs the AD and Producer about a worldwide collapse in the coffee supply chain. On the meantime, Bruce demands his detailed coffee order while the director pushes for rehearsals. The scene inside the film happens in a Western field where Bruce proposes to his girlfriend, Sara. He is grabbing her in his arms and as soon as she accepts his proposal, he lets her fall to the ground claiming he lacks the muscle strength without his coffee. The Producer then reveals the truth about the coffee crisis, leading to Bruce quitting the film. This sparks a huge chaotic montage ensues with crazy physical altercations. https://www.instagram.com/priszanni/ Get to know the filmmaker: What motivated you to make this film? "Cast & Brew" came to me in a New York coffee shop. From my window seat, watched people hurrying by, each holding a giant cup of coffeeIt struck me: not a soul without one, just a whirlwind of rush and stress. And I thought to myself "how attached are we to that coffee and why?". "What would happen if coffee would completely vanish?" My hope is that audiences recognize how fast-paced our society has become, where every minute not spent being productive feels like you have committed a crime. We're constantly rushing, and when we add caffeine into that mix, we only accelerate the loss of ourselves. We lose the purpose of why we do things. I find this concept of obsession and lost of reality very interesting and I have discovered that I actually love to explore that in my films. From the idea to the finished product, how long did it take for you to make this film? It took a year. Script took me a week to make 1st draft as a visualised it all in that coffee shop in New York. I knew exactly what I wanted the film to be from beginning , middle and end. Environmental and Labor Exploitation in the Coffee Industry and How Coffee Can Turn a New Shade with AgroforestryDiscussion with Etelle Higonnet on the environmental impacts of commercial monoculture coffee, including deforestation, loss of critical habitat, loss of biodiversity and amplification of climate change. We also discuss the structural inequities of the industry, with farmers earning the least in the value chain and the prevalence of child labor and forced labor in the industry. Additionally, we discuss the gaps in voluntary certification schemes and the need for both consumer activism, the EUDR and the Forest Act and the need for more regulatory oversight. We also discuss agroforestry and how coffee can be grown to provide food security to farmers as well as retain biodiversity and regenerate soil. For More Info: https://thegravity.fm/#/episode/67

What Can 25 Years in Retail Real Estate Teach Us About Resilience and Growth? On this episode of Retail Retold, Chris Ressa welcomes longtime friend and industry leader Hue Chen, President of Saglo Companies, for a conversation packed with stories and lessons from 25 years in retail real estate.Hue reflects on starting his career in the trenches of the Great Recession, when lead-sharing boards and creativity kept deals alive. He shares how an unlikely sabbatical during that downturn reshaped his outlook, and why sometimes the “boring” tenants — daycares, laundromats, coin ops — deliver the biggest wins. From comparing ICSC attendee lists in 2018 vs. 2025 to unpacking why beverage brands like Dutch Bros and 7 Brew are exploding, Hue uses data and anecdotes to show how the retail landscape is constantly evolving. He and Chris also dive into deeper themes: what it takes to scale a company without being the bottleneck, how community-minded regional tenants often outperform nationals, and why consumer and retailer debt may be retail's real risk today. It's a conversation that blends history, humor, and hard truths — and proves that the best retail stories aren't always about lollipops and rainbows, but about resilience, adaptability, and the unexpected deals that shape entire careers. What you'll hear: How the Great Recession forged Hue's mindset — and why he never thought of leaving retailThe sabbatical that reset his career and gave him long-term perspectiveWhy “unsexy” tenants like daycares and laundromats can be the most profitable anchorsWhat ICSC attendee lists reveal about a generational shift in retail leadershipHow Saglo builds systems so the president isn't the bottleneckWhy regional tenants with 2–20 stores often outperform big nationalsThe explosion of beverage concepts like Dutch Bros, 7 Brew, and Luckin Coffee — and what makes them different from StarbucksWhy community engagement is often the real driver of tenant successThe hidden risks: consumer debt and retailer leverage vs. the strength of retail real estate fundamentalsLessons on adaptability, resilience, and how a single deal can shape an entire careerChapters00:00 Navigating the Great Recession: A Shared Journey09:32 The Evolution of Retail Real Estate20:47 Current Market Dynamics and Future Outlook24:56 Retail Resilience and Market Dynamics28:22 Concerns in Retail: Debt and Consumer Behavior31:26 The Importance of Community Engagement in Retail34:24 The Rise of Coffee Concepts in Retail40:30 Defining the 'Third Place' in Today's Society

And Chick-fil-A jumps into the specialty drink race with a fresh new concept.Show Notes with links:Ford is making a bold push to close Q3 strong by offering promotional interest rates to subprime borrowers—an unusual but calculated move that underscores growing affordability challenges in the new vehicle market. The deal, ending this month, allows buyers with credit scores below 620 to access the same low rates typically reserved for prime borrowers.Ford is targeting this incentive to move more F-150 pickups, which now range from $39K to nearly $80K.With average monthly payments nearing $750 and interest rates at 6.4%, the brand sees affordability as a top barrier to closing deals.Extended terms of 72–84 months are increasingly common, and Ford's finance arm says only 3–4% of its 2024 loans qualify as “higher risk.”“We wanted to provide the opportunity to those with credit ratings that may not be perfect,” a Ford spokesperson said. “This could help offset rising monthly payments.”New legislation in New Jersey is giving dealership service departments a major boost—ensuring fair pay for recall and warranty work while holding automakers more accountable. The “Motor Vehicle Open Recall Notice and Fair Compensation Act” takes effect April 2026.Manufacturers must reimburse at retail labor rates, not discounted warranty rates.Automakers must also pay 1.5% monthly of book value for any “stop sale” or “do not drive” recall units sitting on lots.Illinois saw an annual $249M increase in warranty payouts after passing similar legislation.“This legislation represents a critical step forward… and ensures that automakers fairly compensate those who fix their mistakes,” said NJ CAR President Laura Perrotta.Chick-fil-A is entering the specialty drink wars with a new concept called Daybright, a standalone beverage-focused brand launching near Atlanta later this fall.Daybright will feature smoothies, cold-pressed juices, and specialty coffees—no chicken sandwiches here.Operated by Chick-fil-A's innovation arm, Red Wagon Ventures, the concept joins earlier spin-offs like Little Blue Menu and Pennycake. The new brand enters a booming beverage space already being chased by McDonald's, Taco Bell, and Wendy's.Competitors like 7 Brew and Dutch Bros have seen triple-digit growth as Gen Z flocks to drink-first concepts.0:00 Intro with Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier1:07 Huge Launch Announcement at MoreThanCars.com2:20 ASOTU Edge Webinar TODAY at 2PM on Cost-Cutting3:10 Ford Offers Low Rates To Sub-Prime Buyers5:29 New Jersey MandJoin Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/
AleSmith is celebrating its 30th anniversary with momentum behind new products – in and out of beer – and a growing contract brewing business. In this episode of the Brewbound Podcast, AleSmith president Brandon Richards shares how the San Diego craft brewery has evolved to meet drinkers' needs with new products while fortifying its business by brewing for others. Richards explains how the Party Tricks IPA line and addition of Sun Path fruited lager line have driven growth for the company. Party Tricks has helped “turn the business around” over the last two years, he says. In 2025, AleSmith expects to double its contract volume year-over-year with plans for more in 2026. The company is in the process of completing facility upgrades to enable spirits-based RTD production that will expand its consumer base as well as its own product mix. AleSmith is expanding its flagship Speedway Stout brand for its first spirit-based offering with Speedway Espresso Martini, and the company is adding a second spirit-based ready-to-drink (RTD) line with Hoptails, which Richards believes is a first-to-market product as a hard hop water cocktail. Richards also gives insights into what AleSmith is looking for in a contract partner, what he believes the brewery offers its clients and how much volume the company has earmarked for co-packing in 2026. Before the interview, the Brewbound team breaks down the biggest industry headlines, including Charlie Sheen's non-alc beer, Molson Coors' new CEO, investors' lawsuit against Island Brands and Boston Beer's winning pick for The Summer I Turned Pretty.
On Episode #182 of the PricePlow Podcast, Mike and Ben welcome back Max Fairchild alongside industry legend Chuck Letchman and marketing strategist Dan Pierce to explore the launch of Brew Shockalaka, a revolutionary zero-sugar coffee beverage that's redefining what functional drinks can be. This isn't your typical RTD coffee or energy drink - it's a complete reimagining of the category that combines dessert-inspired flavors with a powerful 1000mg nootropic matrix, all while maintaining zero sugar and zero dairy. Brew Shockalaka! Zero-Sugar Dairy-Free Nootropic Coffee That Tastes Amazing Max, who first appeared on the PricePlow channel back in 2018 during his Nutrex Research days, has partnered with distribution veteran Chuck Letchman to create what they call "the Deadpool of coffee" - a brand that refuses to take itself too seriously while delivering serious functional benefits. From the challenges of retort manufacturing to the strategic decision to launch in fitness channels first, this conversation reveals the complexities of beverage innovation and the power of industry relationships in bringing disruptive products to market. The team discusses their unique approach to product development, from sourcing natural caffeine from Colombian beans to incorporating CognatiQ coffee fruit extract and a strategic 560mg dose of potassium. With flavors like Salted Caramel, Café Mocha, and Maple Cinnamon Donut, "Brew Shock" is targeting the convergence of energy drinks, functional coffee, and nootropic supplements while building a brand identity that embraces music, comedy, and authentic consumer connections. https://blog.priceplow.com/podcast/brew-shockalaka-182 Video: Brew Shockalaka - The Coffee Revolution with Max Fairchild, Chuck Letchman, and Dan Pierce https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1eDuXsHu2m0 Detailed Show Notes: Building the Zero Sugar Coffee Revolution (0:00) – Introductions: Reuniting with Max Fairchild (2:15) – Chuck Letchman's Industry Legacy and Partnership Philosophy (4:15) – Dan Pierce: The Digital Marketing Strategist (6:00) – The Genesis Story: From Powder to RTD Innovation (8:30) – Manufacturing Challenges: The Retort Reality (12:00) – Flavor Development: Dessert-Inspired Innovation (17:00) – The Science Behind the Buzz: Nootropic Innovation (22:00) – Labeling Strategy: Transparency as Differentiation (26:45) – The Retort Advantage: Manufacturing as Competitive Moat (32:00) – The Chuck Letchman Effect: Industry Relationships as Assets (38:45) – Team Dynamics: Swiss Army Knife Approach (44:15) – Strategic Pacing: Growth Management Philosophy (50:30) – Target Demographics: Coffee Culture Convergence (53:45) – Brand Personality: The Deadpool of Coffee (55:30) – Alcohol Collaborations: Expanding Usage Occasions (1:00:15) – Strategic Partnerships: Redefine Foods Collaboration (1:07:15) – Digital Marketing Revolution: TikTok Strategy (1:12:00) – International Expansion: Testing Global Waters Where to Follow and Learn More Brew Shockalaka: Company Website PricePlow.com/brew-shockalaka ...... Don Cox joins the show this morning to discuss the challenges of small business in this new tariff burdened economy. The realities of small business are day to day. Compounding this in the North Carolina area, are the realities of a Federal Government that still has still not delivered on their promises to help the most in need in a year following Hurricane Helene.
