La semana pasada Donald Trump anuncio su intención de adquirir Groenlandia junto a otras propuestas un tanto descabelladas como incorporar a Canadá como Estado número 51 de la Unión o retomar el control del canal de Panamá. Las dos últimas son nuevas, la primera ya la anunció en el verano de 2019 provocando cierta controversia. Con más de dos millones de kilómetros cuadrados, Groenlandia es la isla más grande del mundo, se encuentra en su mayor parte por encima del circulo polar ártico y conforma un territorio autónomo dentro del Reino de Dinamarca. Los groenlandeses, poco más de 50.000, disponen de un generoso autogobierno, pero el Gobierno danés retiene las competencias sobre defensa y relaciones exteriores. Pero, a pesar de que está prácticamente vacía y es casi del todo inhabitable, se trata de un lugar con gran valor estratégico por su posición geográfica entre Europa y América y, sobre todo, por sus abundantes recursos naturales. Esa es la razón por la que Estados Unidos ha intentado comprar la isla a Dinamarca en dos ocasiones. La primera en 1867 cuando el presidente Andrew Johnson propuso a los daneses adquirir la isla en una operación similar a la que habían efectuado con Alaska, comprada poco antes al imperio ruso por 7 millones de dólares. El Gobierno danés de la época se negó. Décadas más tarde, al comienzo de la guerra fría, Harry Truman ofreció 100 millones de dólares por la isla por su posición geográfica. Los daneses la rechazaron pero permitieron que el ejército de EEUU instalase una gran base aérea. La de Trump es, por lo tanto, la tercera vez que un presidente de Estados Unidos trata de quedarse con Groenlandia. Esa insistencia lleva a pensar que esto va más allá de una mera provocación como en el caso de Canadá o Panamá. Para Trump el control de Groenlandia es, según él, ”una necesidad absoluta" para la seguridad nacional ya que considera al Ártico de especial importancia. Tanto rusos como chinos tratan de incrementar su influencia allí y ambicionan explotar la riqueza minera de una isla que ha permanecido virgen hasta el momento. Groenlandia posee reservas de petróleo, gas, todo tipo de minerales y tierras raras, unos elementos químicos esenciales para las tecnologías modernas. El deshielo del Ártico está abriendo además nuevas oportunidades de explotación, lo cual podría reducir la dependencia de Estados Unidos en importaciones, especialmente de China. Ese mismo deshielo está haciendo del Ártico una zona navegable durante más tiempo. Controlar Groenlandia aseguraría estas nuevas rutas comerciales y permitiría vigilar el tráfico naval de sus competidores. En Dinamarca y en la propia Groenlandia han rechazado la venta recordando que la isla pertenece a sus habitantes. El primer ministro groenlandés, Múte Egede, ha recordado que "Groenlandia no está en venta", aunque ha dejado la puerta abierta a una mayor cooperación con Estados Unidos. En Europa las palabras de Trump no han sentado bien. Groenlandia no forma parte de la Unión Europea, pero si está integrada en su Asociación de Territorios de Ultramar junto a otras ex colonias como Aruba o la Polinesia Francesa. En Bruselas ven Groenlandia como una ventana al Ártico. No eliminan tampoco la posibilidad de que la isla vuelva a entrar en la Unión Europea mediante un referéndum. Lo que suceda dependerá de los groenlandeses. Si Trump quiere atraer a la isla deberá ser más sutil y hacerles una oferta que no puedan rechazar. Varios incendios están asolando el condado de Los Ángeles desde el martes pasado. Este gran incendio con varios focos activos es de tal magnitud que ocupa por completo la agenda informativa y se ha convertido ya en uno de los más devastadores en la historia de California. Las llamas lo han devorado todo a su paso: grandes áreas cubiertas de vegetación, casas, infraestructuras y han obligado a las autoridades a evacuar a cientos de miles de personas. Al margen de los daños materiales, que serán muy cuantiosos en términos económicos, la catástrofe ha dejado ya 16 víctimas mortales y un número aún indeterminado de desaparecidos. El primero de los incendios comenzó en Palisades, una zona residencial ubicada en el noreste de la ciudad y hasta ahora ha sido el más destructivo de todos los focos. Ha arrasado casi 9.000 hectáreas de Pacific Palisades, un barrio conocido en todo el mundo por sus lujosas residencias y sus vistas al mar. Que el incendio se haya extendido tanto se debe a que el viento sopla con fuerza (se han registrado rachas de más de 150 km/h), y a la sequía previa. En el sur de California ha llovido muy poco en los últimos meses, la vegetación estaba muy seca y ha ardido con mucha facilidad. Los montes, además, no estaban limpios, lo que ha incrementado la cantidad de combustible en el bosque bajo típico de la costa sur de California. Otro de los focos que más se han extendido ha sido el de Eaton, en la sierra de San Gabriel, al norte de Pasadena. Este incendio está siendo realmente difícil de extinguir debido a la complicada orografía del lugar y a la densidad de la vegetación, lo que ha permitido que las llamas se propaguen con gran rapidez penetrando en zonas pobladas como el barrio de Altadena. El de Eaton está siendo especialmente mortífero. 11 de las 16 víctimas mortales se han producido allí. Al igual que sucede en la costa, la combinación de vientos fuertes, bajos niveles de humedad y una vegetación extremadamente seca ha creado la condiciones ideales para la expansión del fuego, convirtiendo lo que podría haber sido un incendio controlable en una catástrofe de grandes dimensiones. Las consecuencias económicas de estos incendios son igualmente alarmantes. Se estima que los daños puedan alcanzar entre los 130.000 y 150.000 millones de dólares, pero podría ser mucho más. Con la estimación inicial el gran incendio de Los Ángeles es ya el más costoso de la historia de Estados Unidos. A eso ha contribuido el hecho de que en zonas como Palisades el valor de las propiedades es muy alto. La reconstrucción será una tarea monumental tanto en términos de tiempo como de recursos financieros. La lucha contra estos incendios está siendo también muy costosa. Hay cerca de 15.000 personas involucradas directamente en la extinción del fuego: bomberos, policías y miembros de la Guardia Nacional trabajando incansablemente para contener las llamas. Pero tanto esfuerzo no está dando los resultados deseados porque falta agua en muchas bocas de incendio y porque la velocidad del viento impide valerse de medios aéreos. Las autoridades han tenido que recurrir a medidas drásticas como imponer toques de queda y arrestar a saqueadores que aprovechaban las zonas evacuadas. En distintas partes de Los Ángeles hay cortes de electricidad y problemas de abastecimiento de agua. El humo ha empeorado la calidad del aire que en algunas zonas está en niveles peligrosos, por lo que se ha declarado la emergencia. El gobernador de California, Gavin Newsom, ya ha adelantado que este será el peor desastre natural de la historia de Estados Unidos.
