Esa pregunta ya tiene respuesta. La Asamblea de Expertos de Irán ha nombrado a su hijo Mojtaba Jamenei como nuevo líder supremo de la República Islámica, una decisión tomada en medio de una de las crisis más graves que ha vivido el régimen desde su fundación en 1979. Mojtaba tiene 56 años y durante décadas operó en la sombra, sin cargos públicos ni presencia mediática, tejiendo con esmero una red de influencia que penetraba en los tres pilares del régimen: el estamento religioso, las fuerzas de seguridad y las redes políticas que orbitaban en torno a su padre. Su nombre, que significa «elegido» en árabe, parece haber resultado profético. En los bombardeos no solo ha perdido a su padre; también se han llevado a su madre, su esposa y un hijo. Esa tragedia personal adquiere en el chiismo una dimensión simbólica enorme porque evoca directamente el martirio de Hussein y su familia en Karbala en el año 680. En la cultura política iraní, el martirio es un motor político real que otorga legitimidad, algo que el nuevo régimen ya está explotando. Su ascenso supone la primera transferencia hereditaria del poder en la historia de la República Islámica, algo un tanto irónico para un sistema que nació precisamente como reacción contra la monarquía y la transmisión del poder de padres a hijos. Los fundadores del régimen denunciaron ese principio como antislámico. Pero la lógica de la guerra tiene sus propias reglas, y la urgencia de la supervivencia institucional se ha impuesto sobre cualquier consideración ideológica. La designación es también un desafío directo a Donald Trump, que había declarado que el nombramiento de Mojtaba le resultaba inaceptable y que serían ellos quienes influirían en el cambio de líder supremo en Irán. El efecto, como suele ocurrir en aquel país, fue exactamente el contrario. El rechazo estadounidense refuerza la imagen interna del nuevo líder. Tras el nombramiento, la Guardia Revolucionaria y el ejército juraron lealtad, e Irán lanzó una oleada de misiles hacia Israel para celebrarlo. El hombre que hereda el cargo no es precisamente un outsider del sistema.
