MTalks—Propelling Or Pathological? Heritage In Urban Design

Aldo Rossi, in The Architecture of the City, describes the urban artefact as a permanence, “a past we are still experiencing.” Rossi proposes permanence's present two aspects: “they can be considered as propelling elements or as pathological ones: artefacts that enable us to understand our city in its totality, or artefacts that appear as a series of isolated elements that we can link only tenuously to an urban system.” Tune in to a discussion that focused on our built heritage and how it can be interlinked with urban design imperatives and opportunities. Are they appropriately interlinked? If not, why not? What might it be like to have these spheres more productively entangled? What policy and other changes in approach might better enable heritage to be integral to a vital and lived future within the context of a broader urban system? Join KTA and our panelists—Christine Phillips, Dan Hill & Felicity Watson—in conversation with compere extraordinaire Stuart Harrison. Curated by Kerstin Thompson Architects. KTA is the 2022 Urban Design winner for the Melbourne Awards, proudly supported by the Naomi Milgrom Foundation.

In this episode, we explore resistance and regeneration in the city across the decades. A city is constantly changing, developing, regeneration yet every generation resists this change. Landscape amnesia or creeping normalcy sets in, where people believe the city has always been in the form they know and love and want little change during their lifetime. What are some of the most significant campaigns against change in the city? And have they been warranted? What was lost and what was gained? What is the underlying reason for resistance? We also interrogate how developers/development give back to the city in generous and meaningful ways if demolishing or changing much-loved aspects of the built environment. How are they soothing us during times of major disruption and is the healing balm working? Resistance and Regeneration interviews include: Felicity Watson, Executive Advocacy Manager from the National Trust Victoria talks about key moments in Melbourne’s history that have truly shaped the city. Sophie Kvist and Anna Muessig from Gehl Architects discuss the evaluation of the Metro Tunnel Creative Program.

The archives of the National Trust’s register of significant places largely document the work of male architects, engineers, builders, planners and politicians. But, while historically under-represented in these professions, women have shaped Melbourne’s cultural landscape in other ways. Through advocacy, activism and civic leadership, women have been instrumental in shaping the fabric of our city, from bluestone laneways, to public art, our green spaces, and the nineteenth-century streetscapes of suburbs such as Carlton and Fitzroy. Reflect on this HERitage panel discussion that featured architects, academics, and advocates that explored the role women have played, and continue to play, in shaping our city. The discussion was facilitated by Felicity Watson, advocacy manager at the National Trust of Australia (Victoria).
