Hello and welcome to Bittersweet Symphony, a podcast where classical musicians share the bitter, the sweet and the bittersweet of life when the concert halls shut their doors and the music stopped. I'm Cliodhna Ryan, violinist, member of the Irish Chamber Orchestra and freelancer. In this episode, I'm chatting to Cormac Ó hAodáin, principal horn with the RTE Concert Orchestra. He shares the bitter experience of his Mum being ill, becoming a carer overnight, and the burnout that followed. His sweet memory is of regular meetups on Zoom with a community of musicians and composers, facilitated by the Contemporary Music Centre in Dublin. His bittersweet is while isolation was challenging, he felt equipped to handle it after a decade of living alone. Between 1993-1996, Cormac represented Ireland in the European Union Youth Orchestra, working with such eminent maestros as Carlo Maria Giulini, Bernard Haitink, Mstislav Rostropovich and Vladimir Ashkenazy. In 1997 he joined the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and in 1999 became a member of the Philharmonia Orchestra. Cormac moved back to Ireland in 2009 to join the RTÉ Concert Orchestra as principal horn. Since his return to Ireland, he has established the Cassiopeia Wind Quintet and joined the teaching staff of the Royal Irish Academy of Music. He is currently doing a Masters in Conducting at TU Dublin, under the mentorship of David Brophy. Australia's relationship with China has been in sharp decline, fuelled by a critical government agenda and a hostile media environment. The trust, warmth and confidence towards China is at a record low, and the majority of Australians now see it as a major security threat. In his new book China Panic, David Brophy offers a progressive alternative to Australia's relationship with China aside from paranoia and pandering, with solutions and strategies that strengthen Australian democracy. Guest: Dr David Brophy (Senior Lecturer in modern Chinese history, University of Sydney) Recorded on 22nd July, 2021.

Australia is in the grip of a China panic. How did we get here, and what's the way out? In this brilliant book, David Brophy takes apart Australia's China debate – its strange alliances and diplomatic failures. Justified criticism of China has too often given way to paranoia and exaggeration.
David Brophy's translation of Muhammad Sadiq Kashghari's In Remembrance of the Saints: The Rise and Fall of an Inner Asian Sufi Dynasty (Columbia University Press, 2021) represents the first comprehensive translation of the text into English. The translation includes a detailed introduction that not only contextualizes the text and its author, but also describes how it reflects the religious and political landscape of the region in the 18th century. Because it sheds light on the Qing conquest of Xinjiang, the role of Naqshbandi Sufis in the region, and the relations between the Muslims of the Tarim Basin and neighboring groups like the Junghars and the Kyrgyz, Brophy's translation will be of great interest to students and scholars of Central Asia, China, and the Islamic world. Nicholas Seay is a PhD student at Ohio State University

The language used by the Chinese state in Xinjiang pathologises Islam, seeing it as an "ideological virus" which needs eradication by transformation through education. In recent days, China has publicly justified the mass internment of Uighurs as necessary in its struggle against the "three evils" of terrorism, separatism and religious extremism. In part 1, Louisa and Graeme heard testimony from Australian Uighurs describing how Uighur communities are being destroyed by mass detentions. In part 2, they explore the Chinese Communist party's historical relationship with its New Frontier with Sydney University’s David Brophy and the Australian National University’s Tom Cliff.
