Mark Neale, founder and chief executive of Mountain Warehouse - the outdoor clothing company - joins Will Bain for this episode of Big Boss Interview to discuss how conflict in the Middle East, tariff volatility and UK economic policy are affecting retailers and the wider economy.Disruption to global shipping routes is already pushing up costs for businesses importing goods from Asia. Prior to the latest US/Isarael war against Iran ,attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea had effectively closed the Suez Canal to many freight ships for nearly a year, forcing cargo to travel around the Horn of Africa instead. That detour adds roughly two weeks to delivery times and significantly increases freight costs. Neale says companies have built greater resilience into supply chains since the pandemic, but sustained disruption in from the latest conflict will eventually feed through into higher prices if the situation continues.Trade policy is creating further uncertainty due to the impact of American tariffs. Neale questions what such tariff policies are designed to achieve, arguing that no realistic trade regime is going to bring garment manufacturing back to the United States. He also says they've tried diversify away from Chinese made clothes as a result. The interview also examines the state of the UK economy. Neale argues the country has lost “the best part of a year of growth” because the government repeatedly emphasised how broken parts of the country were — from the NHS to the economy — without setting out a clear positive vision for growth. When the new administration arrived, he says, inflation and interest rates were already beginning to fall and there were early signs of recovery emerging. Neale compares the situation to a new chief executive taking over a struggling company: you acknowledge the problems, but you also need to rally the workforce with a plan.Hiring and labour regulation are another concern. Neale describes the government's proposed Employment Rights Bill as “the let's make it more difficult for people to get a job Bill”, warning that additional regulation may make businesses more cautious when recruiting. With around a million people in the UK currently out of work due to long-term sickness, he argues that policies which increase perceived hiring risk could make it harder for people trying to re-enter the workforce to get an opportunity.Competition for jobs is already intense. When Mountain Warehouse opened a new store in Wigan, 493 people applied for just ten roles, including more than 100 applicants for the store manager position alone. Neale says that when employers face such large applicant pools alongside stricter employment rules, they are more likely to choose the safest candidate — potentially shutting out those who most need a chance.Presenter: Will Bain Producer: Olie D'Albertanson Editor: Henry Jones00:00 Sean and Will start the show 01:45 Mark Neale joins BBI 02:28 From rollerblades to Mountain Warehouse 08:17 Freight concerns & Middle East disruption 11:38 Diversifying supply chain away from China 17:44 Government stamping out green shoots of recovery & lost year of growth 25:39 Employment Rights Bill impact & unintended consequences for hiring 29:33 De minimis, ideal high street & long-term confidence

Mat Cauthon never wanted power. He didn't ask for prophecy. He didn't seek command. He certainly didn't volunteer to marry into an empire. And yet by the end of The Wheel of Time, Mat commands the Horn of Valere, leads the greatest army in the world, survives impossible odds, and outmaneuvers both the Seanchan and the Shadow. So how did he get there? In this episode of the Black Tower Podcast, we explore a bold question: Did Mat Cauthon become strong by taking the strengths of his enemies? From the Dark One's twisted luck… To the Seanchan's military structure… To the forbidden knowledge of the Finn… To the memories of ancient generals… Did Mat win by absorbing the tools of the Shadow and reforging them into something better? Or is he the Pattern's greatest scavenger — the one man who turns chaos into victory? Join us as we break down Mat's evolution, his luck, his leadership, and what it really means to “win” in The Wheel of Time.

In this episode of The Horn, Alan is joined by H. A. Hellyer, Senior Associate Fellow at the Royal United Services Institute and Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress, to explore what's behind the rift between Saudi Arabia and the UAE and the competing visions of regional order driving it. They examine where tensions have emerged most sharply, including in Yemen and Sudan, and what these flashpoints reveal about each country's red lines and regional strategy. They look at how, despite the dispute, Abu Dhabi and Riyadh are coordinating their response to Iran's attacks on Gulf states following U.S.-Israel strikes on Iran. They also discuss what Saudi-UAE détente might look like, whether Riyadh and Abu Dhabi can manage their disagreements, including over Sudan, if they are unable to fully resolve them and how countries in the Horn of Africa can avoid being drawn into the rivalry.
Chuck And Julie Show with Chuck Bonniwell and Julie Hayden Crisis in the Colorado GOP and Geopolitical Shifts in Iran: The Chuck and Julie Show This episode of the Chuck and Julie Show focuses on the escalating financial and leadership crisis within the Colorado Republican Party under Chair Brita Horn. The hosts also analyze the geopolitical fallout following the death of Iran's Supreme Leader and the subsequent military actions by the U.S. and Israel. The Colorado GOP Financial Collapse and Leadership Dispute The Colorado Republican Party is facing a severe internal crisis characterized by mounting debt and legal "lawfare." Since Chair Brita Horn took office less than a year ago, the party's finances have plummeted from a 74,000 surplus to debt exceeding 267,000 as of January. The hosts highlight that the party is currently accumulating debt at a rate of approximately 2,800 per day. Much of this is attributed to legal fees from attorney Steve Klinda, who billed the party 84,000 in January alone and is now demanding a total of $211,000. Critics argue these legal actions are vindictive and aimed at fellow Republicans rather than political opponents. Ray Garcia, Chairman of the Colorado Hispanic Republicans, joined the discussion to detail the efforts to oust Horn. A petition was filed to hold a meeting where 90% of eligible voters previously demanded Horn's resignation, though she has disputed the validity of that meeting. A second meeting is scheduled for tonight, but there are significant concerns regarding "technical glitches" and administrative manipulation intended to rig the voting numbers. Garcia noted that the party's attorney has been avoiding service of legal papers while continuing to bill for communication regarding the dispute. International Turmoil: The Neutralization of Iranian Threats The discussion shifted to the death of Iran's Supreme Leader and the Trump administration's aggressive military response. The hosts noted that the U.S. Navy and Israeli forces have effectively dismantled the Iranian Navy, reducing their presence in the Gulf of Hormuz from 11 ships to zero. Military strikes have also targeted radar systems and defense shields protecting Iran's nuclear arsenal. While the hosts expressed ambivalence toward long-term "nation-building," they supported the immediate neutralization of a regime that has historically called for "Death to America". The hosts observed that the Iranian regime appears to be in chaos, with sporadic drone attacks on neighbors like Dubai possibly being a desperate attempt to test remaining defense mechanisms or simply the result of a fractured command structure. Despite the instability, the hosts highlighted that many Iranians, particularly the urban middle class and women, appear supportive of the regime's downfall, though the lack of a clear successor remains a concern. The Colorado GOP is at a breaking point, with its future dependent on the outcome of tonight's contentious leadership meeting and the resolution of its massive debt. Internationally, the power vacuum in Iran presents both an opportunity for regional stability and a risk of prolonged chaos, as the U.S. shifts away from nation-building toward a strategy of pure threat neutralization.

Watch more videos in our new App: https://bit.ly/3g9KM8j Normally, our lifetime is too short to see any major changes. We don't notice mountains rise, the way rivers change their course, or how oceans are created. Entire valleys may be sinking, but it usually takes too long for them to sink entirely. Still, a group of scientists recently noticed there's a new ocean being formed really fast and we can even witness it appear. Not far away from the Horn of Africa peninsula, the sixth ocean is being born at the moment! By the way, there's a theory that claims the Pacific and the Atlantic Oceans might just cease to exist, forming the new ocean basin. Eurasia will be split to form a new ocean, and all the continents will migrate to merge into the supercontinent. Another possible scenario claims the continents might merge into the uniform landmass, or form a circle with a large sea inside, and the Super Pacific Ocean outside. And since all the continents keep drifting northwards even now, it's quite probable that almost all of them will meet up somewhere at the North Pole. So, here's how the Earth might change in millions of years. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In the early hours of March 3, 1993, someone snuck into the Maryland home of Millie Horn, where she lived with her disabled eight-year-old son, Trevor, and his nurse, Janice Saunders. After shooting both women in the head multiple times, the intruder smothered Trevor Horn to death, then quietly left the house. Hours later, the bodies of all three were discovered by Millie's sister, who stepped by to check on them.Almost immediately, suspicion fell on Millie Horn's ex-husband, Lawrence, who lived thousands of miles away in California, but with whom she'd spoken just hours before the murders occurred. In time, investigators were able to establish a financial motive, linking Lawrence Horn to the murders, yet they were unable to place Horn in Maryland when the murders occurred. Ultimately, Lawrence Horn would be tried and convicted for all three murders, but by that time, he wasn't sole perpetrator of the crime. And when prosecutors were finally able to pin down the men responsible for the deaths, it turned out the killers received guidance from a very surprising source.Recommendations:Phantasma By Kaylie SmithHappy Place By Emily HenryReferencesAssociated Press. 1993.
