Professor Gary Lee established the first dedicated pleural service in the southern hemisphere in 2009, at the Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Perth. He says that pleural disease has finally come to be regarded as an area of subspeciality interest in its own right, not just a complication of other comorbidities. In this podcast he presents a potted history of key developments in the management of pleural effusion in particular. This is diagnosed in about 60,000 people every year in Australia, mainly as a result of infection or malignancy. With mentors in the UK, Professor Lee conducted some of the earliest trials on fibrinolytics and DNAses to break down purulent effusions. They also put to the test protocols for pleurodesis via talcum insufflation that date back to the 1930s. Professor Lee's more recent clinical research has focused on the use of indwelling pleural catheters that a patient can use to drain pleural effusate when feeling breathless. He has also a made an important contribution to conservative management guidelines for primary spontaneous pneumothorax. This story is great example of how clinical practice emerges imperfectly from a soup of evidence, accidents, human biases and system. Guest Prof Gary Lee PhD FRACP FRCP FCCP (Pleural Service, Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Perth; University of Western Australia).Co-hostDr Marion Leighton FRACP (Wellington Hospital).ProductionProduced by Mic Cavazzini DPhil. Welcome to the PARTY! Let's dig in and deconstruct EVERYTHING so we can REconstruct a mindset, a life, and a world we love. The goal here is to make our way through (with a good dose of sarcasm and irreverence) some dialogue in order to develop the skills necessary to build psychologically and emotionally safe environments for all humans. We'll talk through anything and everything that humans experience today: relationships, health, mental health, emotions, parenting, success... Let's define and redefine what these things mean to us and learn to show up with attunement and compassion.Let me prepare you... I'm irreverant. But only about conditioning and systems. I have ONE absolute rule in my house and that is this: Revere all humans. Reverence does NOT equal respect. Respect is earned and learned. Reverence comes with existence. I am an Executive Mindfulness Coach, author, sole parent, and fiery soul. My mission in life is to spread the wealth of health education. And that mostly means I critique culture and share what I believe contributes to the conditioning around said cultural standards.I'm committed to showing up and running my mouth. Please consider committing to listening with openness and SHARING this podcast with your people– it'll be SUCH a great conversation-starter:)Support the show

My guest today is Jonathon Wilson-Hartgrove. Wilson-Hartgrove is a writer, preacher, and moral activist. He is an assistant director at the Center for Public Theology and Public Policy at Yale Divinity School. Wilson-Hartgrove lives with his family at the Rutba House, a house of hospitality in Durham, North Carolina that he founded with H his wife, Leah. Wilson-Hartgrove directs the School for Conversion, a popular education center in Durham committed to "making surprising friendships possible," and is an associate minister at St. John's Missionary Baptist Church. Jonathan is the author or coauthor of more than a dozen books, including Reconstructing the Gospel, The Third Reconstruction, and Strangers at My Door.  About White Poverty: How Exposing Myths About Race and Class Can Reconstruct American Democracy (Liveright, 2024): One of the most pernicious and persistent myths in the United States is the association of Black skin with poverty. Though there are forty million more poor white people than Black people, most Americans, both Republicans and Democrats, continue to think of poverty--along with issues like welfare, unemployment, and food stamps--as solely a Black problem. Why is this so? What are the historical causes? And what are the political consequences that result? These are among the questions that the Reverend Dr. William J. Barber II, a leading advocate for the rights of the poor and the "closest person we have to Dr. King" (Cornel West), addresses in White Poverty, a groundbreaking work that exposes a legacy of historical myths that continue to define both white and Black people, creating in the process what might seem like an insuperable divide. Analyzing what has changed since the 1930s, when the face of American poverty was white, Barber, along with Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove, addresses white poverty as a hugely neglected subject that just might provide the key to mitigating racism and bringing together tens of millions of working class and impoverished Americans. Thus challenging the very definition of who is poor in America, Barber writes about the lies that prevent us from seeing the pain of poor white families who have been offered little more than their "whiteness" and angry social media posts to sustain them in an economy where the costs of housing, healthcare, and education have skyrocketed while wages have stagnated for all but the very rich. Asserting in Biblically inspired language that there should never be shame in being poor, White Poverty lifts the hope for a new "moral fusion movement" that seeks to unite people "who have been pitted against one another by politicians (and billionaires) who depend on the poorest of us not being here." Look out, world: Victoria Hedger is making her 3rd debut on the podcast! From ages 18 - 20, Victoria was very disoriented in her faith. Doubt and questions turned into confusion, bitterness, offense, and a hardened heart. God was faithful to bring her through that dark time, but He did not stop there. He redeems and heals everything we bring to Him in surrender. In this episode, we discuss: - Is using the term "deconstruction" more harmful than it is helpful? - How can you doubt in a way that will lead to your reconstructing your faith (not keeping you in bitterness or unanswered questions)? - What can you do to support a friend going through a disorienting time in her faith journey? Episode SummaryHave you ever wanted someone to sit with you by the fire and watch your old religious beliefs go up in flames? Maybe you've longed for a guide or a coach to help you navigate all this wandering in the spiritual wilderness. If so, then this week's episode is what you need right now!Faith deconstruction coach Angela J. Herrington joins me to talk about life after evangelicalism, and in particular this tender time in your spiritual journey when you feel alone, bewildered, angry, lost, and a bit terrified of what comes next. “There are a ton of people out here in the wilderness trying to figure out what we believe and what faith looks like during and after deconstruction. Together, we slog through the uncertainties and complexities of faith deconstruction. Laughing, crying, and raging against the toxic religious machine together,” she shares. This incredibly practical, approachable, and applicable conversation is a must for anyone in the throes of faith reconstruction. Faith deconstruction is disorienting, it's painful, it's also triggering. It's often hard to find the language to describe what you are feeling, much less to find a way forward. As you navigate this space in between who you were and who you are becoming, may this conversation guide you on the long journey back to yourself as well as to God.Bio:As a certified life coach, seminary-trained online pastor, and a faith deconstruction coach, Angela has a lot of experience helping people connect with God. But this is also a very personal journey for me. For the last decade, I've been on my own journey to break free from learned smallness and step into wild sacred holy womanhood. Long story short, after finding faith in my early 30's I began to realize that what I was hearing from the church about women didn't always line up with what God was telling me. I loved God but realized the church was teaching some really toxic stuff. So this Enneagram 8, first born, Gen Xer started deconstructing. I questioned and challenged everything I thought I knew about faith, gender, and myself. It was messy and took a lot of work to sort it out. Therapy. Coaching. Bodywork. Spiritual healing. Conferences and retreats. And even a couple of college degrees. But the thing that made the biggest difference was the presence and support of wise people who helped me up when I didn't know where else to turn. Which is just one reason why I became a faith deconstruction coach, to help people just like me make their way through the wilderness of deconstruction. Have you ever struggled with your faith? Have you struggled to understand why God does what He does, or why He allows things to happen that can be so painful? I certainly have. It has become wildly popular in today's culture to question our faith. People call it deconstruction, and some very popular figures are doing it very publicly. There's a natural time in the development of our faith, or our children's faith, where we have to own it for ourselves, but deconstruction goes well beyond that. What better way to kick off a new brand new year than to spend some time solidifying our faith as parents so that we can help our children do the same thing? Let's learn to REconstruct our faith when challenges to it come! Tune in now to meet author and Bible study teacher, Erin H. Warren as we begin this important conversation! LINKS:  THIS MONTH'S RESOURCE: Everyday Prayers for Faith: Finding Confidence in God No Matter What Life rarely goes as planned, and we often find ourselves tossed to and fro by circumstances out of our control. When things go awry, our confidence in God's faithfulness may waver. But His faithfulness is tied to His promises in Scripture, not our earthly circumstances. In Everyday Prayers for Faith: Finding Confidence in God No Matter What, author Erin H. Warren helps us stop placing our faith in things that can't keep their promises, and unpacks the promises of God on which we can build our faith. With 30 devotions designed to help you find confidence in the Faithful One, Scripture-based prayers to help you remember and claim these truths in your everyday life, and our beloved Think, Pray, Praise method of daily prayer, Everyday Prayers for Faith is exactly what you need to kick off 2024. Unbelievable takes on the often-misunderstood topic of deconstruction in the sense of deconstructing Christian faith or becoming exvangelical is another phrase you might have come across. It refers to a process, some would say a movement, where individuals critically examine their beliefs, doctrines, and assumptions about Christianity. It often involves re-evaluating traditional interpretations of scripture, exploring different theological perspectives, and grappling with doubts and uncertainties.   Many proponents of deconstruction argue that it can lead to a deeper and more authentic faith by shedding outdated or harmful beliefs and embracing a more personal and nuanced understanding of spirituality. Critics, on the other hand, express concerns that deconstruction can result in a crisis of one's most foundational beliefs crumble beneath them.   But is this at all surprising? With failures of the church to reflect Jesus, with abuse by Christian leaders in the news daily, where is one to turn? Will deconstruction take you deeper? Or will it destroy your belief altogether?
