The Rocky Road hits its 200th episode during Paddy's week – so who better to have on than the King of New York himself, Ireland's John Duddy. He had a famous fan in Jake LaMotta and later worked closely with Robert DeNiro, who had starred as The Bronx Bull in Martin Scorsese's epic Raging Bull back in 1980. Even today he's boxing royalty in the Big Apple but John Duddy is also a son of Derry and an Irish boxing cult hero, someone who helped popularise professional boxing in the early noughties, leading to a wave of up and coming fighters to follow their dreams either at home or across the pond. Show that you can become a big name in Dublin and you could be labelled ‘the next Bernard Dunne'. Show that you're ready to break the Big Apple and you might, you just might, be labelled ‘the next John Duddy'. The Derry Destroyer fought nine times at Madison Square Garden between 2005 and 2010 – winning them all – and lost just twice in a 31-fight career. At one stage he was right in the mix to fight for the middleweight championship of the world – which LaMotta held between 1949 and 1951 – but boxing had other plans for him. John wrapped up his career in 2011 when he realised his hunger had dimmed, cancelling an all-Irish match-up with Andy Lee, and, bitten by the acting bug, he's never looked back. He's still involved in the sport to this day, spearheading a new programme with the Moving Brains Foundation which put on 54 two-hour sessions for people with Parkinsons Disease in 2024 – and continues to grow and grow. And he is also coaching at Trinity Boxing in New York City, a stone's throw from the World Trade Centre, with the hope of one day opening his own gym. In Part 1, we look back at John's early years in the Irish amateur ranks, his determination to unseat Michael Roche as light-middleweight champ and the Corkman's incredible gesture before he finally did, his boxing pals who made it all so enjoyable, and hunkering down to avoid a hurricane in Cuba during a training camp. We also discuss the links in the chain that go from his early life until now – his uncle Jackie, his dad Michael, Charlie Nash, Ken Buchanan, Barry McGuigan and Roberto Duran. This is the ultimate Rocky story. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

While a winter gale rocks the Essex woods, Cian stokes the fire and cracks out a remarkable story written in the mid 19th Century by a fellow Corkman. Allow us to introduce to you the remarkable (and unjustly forgotten) Fitz-James O’Brien: immigrant, man of letters, toast of the literary scene of both London and New York, Civil War fighter, and writer of classic tales of the mysterious. Barely remembered now, this astonishing Irishman once wrote stories of early science fiction that bear comparison to the work of the great H.G. Wells from over forty years later. In What Was It, a brave New Yorker deigns to spend several nights in a haunted house in order to get to the bottom of the hauntings, only to find that the source of the poltergeist-like activity is something unique in the history of the supernatural (and science fiction of the time!). And for a bonus, for this story, O’Brien gives us a crash course in the kinds of weird literature that were popular at the time, and Cian digs out an old tune for a musical ‘treat’ at the end of the episode. So if it’s a weird, windy, stormy night for you, wherever you are, find yourself a decent winter ale, start up the fire, and dive into the WIDE ATLANTIC WEIRD to find out … WHAT WAS IT? Theme Music: by Kevin Gill and Cian Gill THE GALLOWS TREE: Song by Cian Gill, lyrics from the poem ‘The Demon Of The Gibbet’ by Fitz-James O’Brien

The first proper episode of Roy Keane Versus looks at the Corkman's time at Manchester United - from fresh-faced record signing in 1993 to "disgraced" exit in 2005. To get the ball rolling, we look at the highlight of his United career: the night when he single-handedly slayed Juventus in the Champions League. (Well, more or less single-handedly, some other United players were on the pitch too. Allegedly.) MUFC diehard Alex Barnett joins host Neil Brennan to analyse just made Roy and United a match made in heaven and why it ended in a hellish departure. David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo, Alex Ferguson, Bryan Robson, Liverpool, Bayern Munich, Jesper Blomqvist's sleeves… don't worry, we get to it all. Thanks to Fiachra McCarthy for mastering the episode and Derek Doyle for our logo.
To give you a taste of what to expect from Roy Keane Versus, join host Neil Brennan and guest Donald Eke as they analyse one of the most notorious moments of the Corkman's career - and the glorious YouTube clip it spawned. In his influential work Crisis and Decline, R.B. McDowell referred to Henry Lawrence Tivy as ‘an extremely proud and sensitive man.’ Born into a patrician family in Cork, Tivy was a merchant prince who acquired the Cork Constitution newspaper in 1882 and later launched the weekly edition, the Cork Weekly News. In 1915 he purchased the Dublin Evening Mail and Daily Express. These newspapers served as a vehicle for the espousal of Tivy’s unionist politics, of which this pugnacious proprietor remained an unshakeable proponent from the 1880s up to his retreat from public life in 1922. While Tivy’s sensitivity was confined to a host of philanthropic endeavours in Cork City, his pride manifested itself in a range of political and social pursuits. Tivy served as the first president and financier of the Cork Constitution Rugby Club and served as a committee member for the Cork Industrial Exhibitions of 1883, 1902 and 1903. He was a committed supporter of the war effort during the Great War and a committed opponent of the suffragette movement, as well as the republican movement, resulting in extensive harassment by the latter during the War of Independence and the ultimate destruction of the offices of the Cork Constitution during the Civil War. This research aims to trace Tivy’s life and career in broad terms, highlighting his extra-newspaper activities as a key component of the production processes of his newspaper group. It seeks to chart the uneasy transition of a unionist like Tivy into the new Free State, considering also his attempts to obtain compensation from the Irish Grants Commission for losses during the Civil War, and ultimately seeks to engage with the duality of Tivy’s public life as a proud citizen of Cork and dedicated supporter of the Act of Union between Britain and Ireland. Alan McCarthy is Head Tutor and College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences PhD Scholar at the School of History, UCC. His research interests include media, censorship, sport, and labour history in 20th century Ireland, with a particular focus on Cork during 1912-1923. His doctoral thesis examines the experience of Cork’s nationalist and loyalist newspapers during the revolutionary period, and is being supervised by Dr Donal Ó Drisceoil. Alan has also served as a historical advisor to the Michael Collins House Museum project in Clonakilty, and Dunmanway’s forthcoming Sam Maguire mini-museum.
