I speak with Richard Boothby about Freud's unsettling discovery of the death drive in "Beyond The Pleasure Principle."
Something goofy's going on with Boothby. Join your Species 5618 hosts as they discuss good plotting, awkward chemistry, and inconsistent characterization in this generally well-received episode of Star Trek: Voyager. Note that we somehow let things get a bit out of control on this one! Spoiler warning! We dive right into a detail-rich discussion of this episode of Star Trek: Voyager, so if you haven't had a chance to see it yet – beware! ‘Living with Ovarian Cancer Podcast' is full of inspiring stories told by people who are living with or have a connection with Ovarian Cancer. Each person's story is a gift to those listening; unique and told from the heart in their own words. I am your host, Diane Evans-Wood. In this episode I am delighted to talk to Diane Boothby, an amazing lady who tirelessly raises awareness of Ovarian Cancer despite going through her own difficulties. She even took her campaign to high places as you will hear. Diane was diagnosed with Low Grade Serous Ovarian Cancer, and she tells me about the difficulties she experienced during the process of diagnosis and then how hard it was going through the covid pandemic at the time. We talk about the rareness of the disease Diane was diagnosed with, and how she managed to cope after surgery. In addition to this, Diane's Husband was himself diagnosed with cancer, so life was very traumatic for them both at that time. Diane's eyes lit up when talking about her family and she clearly adores them all. I am sure you will find Diane's story very interesting and uplifting because she is so full of positivity and life. When Chakotay is trapped in a boxing dream stuck inside a flashback, he does all that he can to float like an Alshain and sting like a Denevan parasite. But when it turns out Voyager is stuck inside yet another anomaly, things start to get chaotic. Do holographic boxing gloves still smell gross? Why does Boothby need a side hustle in a post-scarcity society? Do the chaotic bros hang out in chaotic space? It's the episode that pulls no punches, but maybe should have. It's Max Fun Drive! When Chakotay lands a high-stakes date, he charms her all the way to a third location for intel on Species 42069. But even after some light desecration of Billy's corpse on Voyager, Captain Janeway believes she can negotiate both peace and freedom with an old friend from Starfleet HQ.
