In this episode, I visit Gip's Place, the legendary Juke Joint in the small sleepy city, Bessemer in Alabama. Here I meet the 97-year-old Henry "Gip" Gipson. Gip's Place has been operating since 1952 and many of the big names of rock and blues have played right here in Gip's backyard: James Brown, Elvis Presley, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Keith Richards, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and many others.  Watch the PBS-documentary about Gip's Place by clicking here.

Birmingham, Alabama - the Magic City - saw events and courageous people who played a central role in the Civil Rights struggle. World Footprints goes on a walking tour through history along the Civil Rights Heritage Trail as we step onto the grounds where African Americans confronted Jim Crow era violence with non-violent civil disobedience. We will also explore Kelly Ingram Park and Birmingham's 4th Avenue Business District and discuss the time when segregation made this the city's "Little Harlem". Brimingham is also known for it's rich musicial traditions and we'll pay homage to two iconic musical figures: Henry "Gip" Gipson whose 'juke joint' is the last standing music venue of it's kind in Alabama. Gip's Place has welcomed musicians from all over the world and every Saturday music lovers travel miles for an all-night music tailgate party on a "Sanford and Son" style lot. We will also introduce Dr. Frank Adams, Sr., a charter member of the Alabama Hall of Fame, who regaled us with stories of his life, a musical set and his time playing with greats like Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington. Sadly, Doc Adams passed away only one month after our meeting with him. We are honored to showcase his music throughout today's show. As a side note, our trip to Birmingham was a very pleasant surprise. As ethnic travelers we often wonder how we'll be perceived and treated. What we found in Birmingham (and Huntsville--another story for another time) were incredibly were welcoming and very hospitable people. Also, the food we enjoyed was GREAT. We highly recommend a visit to Birmingham, Alabama. There's a lot waiting for visitors to discover in the city "where freedom lives".

This week’s guest is Deon Gordon--if you’re civic minded and under 40 you probably know Deon. If you’re over 40 and civic minded you’ve probably heard of Deon, even if you don’t know him personally. Deon is one Birmingham’s champions and just an all-around super nice guy. In March 2015, Deon assumed the role of director of business development for REV Birmingham. Deon was one of the first four individuals I reached out to when I began working on the show. We had everything scheduled for him to be guest #2, but then a series of scheduling snafus led to rescheduling and it wasn't until early August that we were finally able to connect for a conversation. We ended up meeting at 7 a.m. to get the interview onto our calendars! Authenticity and local culture are two of the necessary ingredients for a successful 21st century city. Deon believes Birmingham has finally begun to tell its own story of authenticity, beginning with the culinary and food scene. We talk about some of Deon's favorite Birmingham people, places and things--like Railroad Park, Gip's Place and Chez FonFon. Enjoy! Visit http://birminghamshines.com for more.
