Jason G and I saw Sinners on April 17, 2025.  We both enjoyed the movie.  Initially, I felt it was boring and didn't care about the characters' backstory.  I even dozed off a few times.  Jason thought it was a little slow to start, but it improved as the movie progressed.  We go into further detail in our spoiler review.  Check out the audio and video we recorded right after seeing the film, as usual. Mike and Kenny review and spot faith reflected in the latest film from writer / director Ryan Coogler which stars Michael B. Jordon in dual roles as Elijah "Smoke" and Elias "Stack" Moore, twin brothers returning from a mysterious time Chicago to their Mississippi Delta home town to start again. Set in the 1930's "Smoke" and "Stack," flush with cash and mystery on how they made it, seek to start again by opening a Juke Joint for the black community in their town.  Amidst the challenges they were expecting such as from the Klan, their biggest threat is supernatural evil.    Faith Spotted: The destructive power of temptation and greed, whether for riches, power, influence, or eternal life. Although sin and the brokenness of the world impact all of creation, people have freedom and choose to invite or let sin and unrighteousness into their lives. As taught in Scripture, God offers people the freedom to accept relationship with, and righteousness of, God. Likewise people choose to accept or invite sin/the Devil into their lives, rather than it invading or taking over.  Life outside the grace and love of God is not a blessing but a burden that imprisons the body and destroys one's spirit.  The film depicts the teaching of Jesus in Matthew 10:28 that one should not fear that which can kill only the body, but fear that which kills the soul.  The vampire /Dracula mythology and symbolism that dates back thousands of years depicts the struggle of evil against good.  The place and role of music in black culture and the black church.

Cheers,Scott and JakeBourbon Lens   Blue Note Bourbon™, the award-winning whiskey portfolio which features big notes and a smooth structure, is making waves in the spirits industry. Founded in 2014, B.R. Distilling Company holds the oldest distillery license in the city of Memphis, Tennessee. Blue Note, launched in 2018, is artfully crafted to honor the rich blues music that is synonymous with Memphis.  The brand's whiskey portfolio is distilled in partnership with Bardstown Bourbon Company (parent company of Green River Distilling Company) and then aged just north of downtown where the Mississippi and Wolf Rivers collide. The long summers filled with infamous Memphis heat and cooler evenings forces the whiskey deep into the oak, creating an unmistakably rich flavor that's bold yet smooth. “The location of our warehouses with high humidity and higher average temperatures than Kentucky make it the perfect place to age our whiskey,” said Logan Welk, President and Chief Operating Officer, B.R. Distilling Company. “Our award-winning flagship Blue Note expressions prove that point, with both Juke Joint and Crossroads winning Double Gold at the prestigious San Francisco World Spirits Competition two years running and Blue Note Uncut being named #7 on Whisky Advocate's list of top whiskeys in 2022.” The Blue Note Bourbon portfolio includes: Blue Note Juke Joint ($34.99) Blue Note's flagship Straight Bourbon Whiskey is bottled at 93-proof, unfiltered Mash Bill: 70% corn, 21% rye, and 9% malted barley Awards: 2024 Platinum Medal, San Francisco World Spirits Competition; 2022, 2023 and 2024 Double Gold Medals, Wine Enthusiast (93 pts) Blue Note Crossroads ($44.99) Finished with several types of toasted French oak staves and bottled at 100-proof, unfiltered Mash Bills: 70% corn, 21% rye, 9% malted barley and 78% corn, 13% rye, 9% malted barley Awards: 2024 Platinum Medal, San Francisco World Spirits Competition; 2022, 2023 and 2024 Double Gold Medals Blue Note Uncut ($49.99) Aged for a minimum of four years and bottled at variable proofs Mash Bill: 70% corn, 21% rye, and 9% malted barley Awards: Whisky Advocate's #7 top whiskeys of 2022 (92 pts) Blue Note Straight Rye Whiskey ($34.99) The most recent release is bottled at 93-proof, unfiltered Mash Bill: 95% rye and 5% malted barley  Awards: 2024 ASCOT Awards Double Platinum, Whisky Advocate (90 pts) The brand has also introduced several highly awarded limited-release offerings, which include Premium Small Batch, Single Barrel Reserve, 17-year, and Special Reserve.  Blue Note's packaging is unique and quintessentially Memphis. Metallic blue music notes accent the front label, which features a guitar-like illustration, further reinforcing the product's connection to the Bluff City's musical roots. Production Facility & Tasting Room The 110,000 square foot production facilities, located on Royal Avenue just North of downtown Memphis, are open from Monday through Friday from 10am – 4:00pm and includes a unique and intimate tasting room. Guided tours are available on Thursdays and Fridays for $10 plus tax & fees. Guests can add a Tasting Flight Experience for an additional $5. This week on The Whiskey Trip Podcast, Big Chief takes listeners on a ride to Memphis, Tennessee to chat with Logan Welk President and Chief Operating Officer, from B. R. Distilling Company. Logan takes the Big Man on a ride learning about the Blue Note Whiskey and B. R. Distilling Company. They chat about Memphis and its love of whiskey in Juke Joints that belt out the blues and give the city soul. On the first half, they start the show with Blue Note Juke Joint, a straight bourbon whiskey which is a small batch at 93 proof. This is perfect for the 1920 Juke Joint on the banks of the Mississippi River. To take the listeners into the break Big Chief pours a dram of their Blue Note straight rye whiskey. This is a 3 year old, 93 proof, 95% rye, 5% malted barley whiskey that is contract distilled at Green River. Perfect for any cocktail. To close out the show, Logan and Big Chief sip on a straight rye whiskey finished with toasted French oak that is called Crossroads. A tribute to the place that is said to have given Robert Johnson his magic fingers and voice to belt out the Blues. At 100 proof to sip on in any juke joint. This ride on The Whiskey Trip gives you another glimpse of something the big man loves - classic blues musicians like Al Green, Ottis Redding, and newer artists like Marcus King are always on Big Chief's playlist. Cheers!

Roaring out of New York City comes Popa Chubby with his unique blend of blues, rock and soul. Born Ted Horowitz, he cut his teeth on the late Seventies' NY punk scene, even joining Richard Hell & the Voidoids for awhile. He issued his first album in 1994, and he's never looked back - 38 albums to his credit. For his latest album, Live at G. Bluey's Juke Joint NYC, Chubby took an unique approach: do a live record in a studio, and invite only 50 friends. The result feels like you're onstage with the musicians. Chubby decided to let those friends help pick some of the songs, resulting in an eclectic mix of hits and rarities, some he hadn't played live in years. No overdubs, just Popa Chubby and band, as it happened. We chat with the guitar slinger, who was in the middle of touring Germany during our talk, about stretching out on some of the songs, interacting with the great musicians, and how he feels about rap music and its lineage to the blues.
