Mark Piesing, author of N-4 Down: The Hunt for the Arctic Airship Italia, recounts a secret meeting in Norway in July 1925 that brought together legendary explorer Roald Amundsen and Italian engineer Umberto Nobile to plan the first airship flight over the North Pole. Amundsen, seeking a final financial triumph and the completion of his polar legacy, joined forces with Nobile, a brilliant designer facing political pressure from Mussolini's fascist regime. Their initial 1926 expedition in the airship Norge was a success, but it sparked a bitter rivalry as Nobile was celebrated as a "new Columbus" while Amundsen felt sidelined. By 1928, Nobile returned to the Arctic in a new airship, the Italia, a mission fueled by nationalistic pride and individual obsession. After reaching the North Pole, the craft encountered fierce winds and heavy ice, eventually smashing into the frozen wilderness. The crash split the crew; six men drifted away with the airship's envelope and vanished forever, while ten survivors, including Nobile, were stranded on the ice. A massive international rescue effort ensued, leading to the tragic disappearance of Amundsen, who vanished while flying to save his rival. The Soviet icebreaker Krassin eventually rescued the remaining survivors. However, Nobile's reputation was permanently tarnished when he allowed himself to be rescued first, leaving his crew behind. Upon returning to Italy, he faced the wrath of Mussolini, as the fascist state used him as a scapegoat to deflect from the expedition's failure. (1)1906 AMUNDSEN
Was the movie Jerry Maguire based on a true story? The answer is yes. Legendary sports agent Leigh Steinberg was the real-life inspiration behind Tom Cruise's iconic role in the Academy Award-winning film Jerry Maguire. Over the course of his remarkable career, Steinberg represented more than 300 professional athletes, including numerous Hall of Famers, No. 1 NFL Draft picks, Super Bowl champions, and Olympic athletes, becoming one of the most influential sports agents in history. But behind the extraordinary success came a devastating personal downfall. In this powerful and deeply personal conversation, Leigh shares how addiction nearly destroyed his career, reputation, and relationships—and how faith, perseverance, and purpose helped him rebuild his life and achieve one of the greatest comebacks in professional sports. Whether you're an entrepreneur, athlete, business professional, or someone facing adversity, Leigh's story is proof that your greatest setback does not have to define your future.

This week on Next on the Tee, I'm joined by two of the game's very best. Legendary golf course architect Rees Jones—known worldwide as "The Open Doctor"—shares stories about designing or renovating more than 225 golf courses including 7 US Open sites, 8 PGA Championship courses, 5 Ryder Cup courses, 2 Walker Cup venues, and 1 President's Cup site. Rees also renovated Bethpage Black and explains why the sign stating the course is meant for highly skilled players is no joke. You'll also hear what makes The Keep at McLemore so special, and how he decides where to put the par 3s and par 5s in his course layouts. Then, Golf Magazine Top 100 Instructor Jeff Smith returns to help us all enjoy the game more. Jeff makes every segment he's a part of so much fun. His teaching style makes him one of the most sought-after teachers in our game. Jeff shares practical advice on the mental side of golf, how to flush away the negative thoughts and where we don't want to it and replace it with something positive...but you'll be surprised how he does that. Jeff is great, and you're really going to enjoy and get a lot out of the segment. If you love golf course architecture, golf instruction, the mental game, golf course design, and stories from the people who continue to shape our game, this is an episode you won't want to miss. Thank you, as always, for pressing play. Sit back, relax, and enjoy another great conversation where golf legends live and your game gets better.
Amy Grant graces the show today! We discuss her upcoming concert in Glenside, PA this Saturday 8/1 (8pm), "The Me That Remains" (her first new album in 13 years), and Amy's perspective on the road she has traveled. We weave in a handful of songs to help chronicle that journey, from "Old Man's Rubble" (Amy's first-ever single) and "Sing Your Praise To The Lord" (her first #1 Christian single) to "Love Will Find A Way" (Amy's first mainstream single) and "Baby, Baby" (her first #1 mainstream single), plus the title track from Amy's new album. Part of the road Amy shared is also related to the album cover of "The Me That Remains" and includes a challenging battle the past six years regarding a church her great-grandfather purchased in downtown Nashville in 1925. The church focused on doing the work of Matthew 25 but is currently boarded up and in danger of being put on the open market. Amy and her family's hope is that a court ruling (scheduled for tomorrow--Friday July 31) will make it possible for the property to be transferred to another non-profit instead, which would allow the church to once again be used for charitable work. Your prayers for this would be much appreciated! You can find out more about Amy's concerts, music and more at www.amygrant.com :)See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

"This was very much an aesthetic concept in renaissance Italy; the three natures. The sort of ornamented nature, the cultivated nature and then the wild. So I've always thought about that as a fairly key principle. There comes a point where you've just got to sort of let up on the tiller a bit, and that it's lovely to grow dahlias and tulips outside your door but for God's sake there comes a point where you've just got to stop!"Legendary garden designer Tom Stuart-Smith is Ben Goldsmith's latest guest on Rewilding the World. Listen without ads: www.patreon.com/dopeypodcast Episode summary: This week we continue Allman Brothers Month!Legendary photographer, archivist and Allman Brothers tour manager Kirk West tells the incredible story of his journey from small-town Iowa into the center of American rock-and-roll history. After discovering psychedelics and Chicago blues in the late 1960s, Kirk became an IV meth user and drug dealer. He fled pending charges, landed in the psychedelic communities of Boulder and Northern California, and was eventually identified and arrested while hitchhiking through Nevada with meth and syringes in his backpack. Kirk recounts therapeutic-community rehab, heroin addiction, the murder of his drug-dealing partner, repeated arrests and the camera-store burglary that finally led him back into treatment. He found recovery through one of Florida's earliest Narcotics Anonymous communities—but after five years sober, he attempted to prove that he could drink normally. That experiment ended shortly after John Lennon's murder and ultimately gave Kirk the sobriety date he has maintained ever since. His recovery opened the door to an extraordinary career photographing Bob Marley, Bruce Springsteen, the Rolling Stones, the Who, the Clash, Jerry Garcia and countless others. Kirk eventually became the Allman Brothers Band's archivist and tour manager, served as Dickey Betts' sponsor and helped preserve the group's history. He shares intimate stories about Gregg Allman, Duane Allman, Derek Trucks, Warren Haynes, the Big House in Macon—and the night Lowell George offered him cocaine shortly before his death.
