Roger Ratzenberger Discusses Doc Adams and Vintage Base Ball and Hayley Chavers Illustrates Her BBQ Journey from Disney to Traeger With Guest Co-host, Doug Scheiding Roger Ratzenberger is a huge fan of modern day baseball as well as a lover of the game from the 1800's when, in its infancy it was called base ball. Part of his baseball obsession is to one day see Daniel Lucius "Doc" Adams, M.D. enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame which is where Roger and so many other baseball historians know Doc belongs. Roger discusses his brief New York Yankees fandom, his conversion to a life-long New York Mets fan, his visiting every Major League Baseball stadium, and why he is known as the baseball stadium connoisseur. For more information on Roger Ratzenberger go to http://ratzenberger.org/ and for more information on his Doc Adams awareness campaign go to https://docadamsbaseball.org/ Hayley Chavers is the retail marketing and project manager at Traeger. How she got to this point in her professional career is filled with great stories which includes being a performer at Disneyland in California and later a job with Meater, makers of wireless thermometers. In addition to Hayley's professional career we also discuss her barbecue journey. Hayley is a very talented impressionist and she delights us with two outstanding impressions of Family Guy's, Lois Griffin and Acadamy Award winning actor, Christopher Walken. We conclude the show with the song, Baseball Always Brings You Home from the musician, Dave Dresser and the poet, Shel Krakofsky. We recommend you go to Baseball BBQ, https://baseballbbq.com for special grilling tools and accessories, Magnechef https://magnechef.com/ for excellent and unique barbecue gloves, Cutting Edge Firewood High Quality Kiln Dried Firewood - Cutting Edge Firewood in Atlanta for high quality firewood and cooking wood, Mantis BBQ, https://mantisbbq.com/ to purchase their outstanding sauces with a portion of the proceeds being donated to the Kidney Project, and for exceptional sauces, Elda's Kitchen https://eldaskitchen.com/ We truly appreciate our listeners and hope that all of you are staying safe. On months that have a fifth Friday we break from our normal schedule and produce something tangentially related to ideas of cultural democracy. In 2022 we delve into the history of radio to bring back some historical examples of comedies, documentaries, and serials that let us hear unfiltered aspects of the world as it seemed to our grandparents. In this episode we go back to June 3, 1956 to listen to an episode of the western series Gunsmoke. The series takes place in and around Dodge City, Kansas, in the post-Civil War era and centers on United States Marshall Matt Dillon as he attempts to enforce law and order in the city. It also focuses on Dillon's friendship with Doc Adams, the town's physician; Kitty Russell, owner of the Long Branch Saloon; and Chester, Dillon's deputy. CBS intended Dillon as a "Philip Marlowe of the Old West", and Gunsmoke as a western series for adults. The writers emphasised the brutal nature of the so-called Old West. Charles Meston, the head writer felt disgusted by the archetypal Western hero and set out "to destroy [that type of] character he loathed". In Meston's view, "Dillon was almost as scarred as the homicidal psychopaths who drifted into Dodge from all directions." In many ways it served as an ancestor of series like Deadwood.

The script was also used on the November 8, 1959, program. On December 31, 1899, in an elegant house in London, in a charmingly furnished drawing-room. It's New Year's Eve, and the new century is about to begin. The housemaster is about to leave for the South African war. As the clock strikes midnight and the new century begins, the usual British stiff upper lip attitude prevails, but the joy of the moment fades and is replaced by sadness as the master goes off to war and the bands play "soldiers of the Queen." In Richmond, Virginia, deputy sheriff Ed Hunter arrived. Dodge was able to apprehend two men wanted in Virginia for murder. The men's names were unfamiliar, but a photograph of one of them, taken seventeen years ago, bore a striking resemblance to a close friend of Matt Dillon's.*Support the channel**Merch:*social media:*Follow me on Instagram:*Follow me on Facebook:https://linktr.ee/cowboyclassics*Our Affiliates Partners:Check out Health Ranger Store LINKS: https://linktr.ee/cowboyclassicsThis post/video contains affiliate links, which means that I may receive a commission if you make a purchase using these links. #westerns # wildwest #otr #oldtimeradio #cowboy #western #westerns #wildwest #otr #oldtimeradio #cowboyclassics #podcast #classicwesterns #cowboylife #cowboyhat #cowboyup #cowboystories #cowboystoriespodcast #cowboylifestyle #cowboymoviesSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/cowboy-classics-old-time-radio-westerns-podcast/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

REVIEWS ARE APPRECIATED! Gunsmoke is one of those long-running classic radio shows that everyone knows and remembers. It's also one that is still respected for its high production values, in all aspects. Gunsmoke first aired on the CBS network on April 26, 1952, billed as the first adult western. It was set in Dodge City, Kansas in the 1870's. The main character, Sheriff Matt Dillon, was played by William Conrad. On August 6, 1951, Other regular characters were Chester Proudfoot, played by Parley Baer, the owner of the Longbranch Saloon Miss Kitty, played by Georgia Ellis; and Doc Adams, played by Howard McNear. The series featured top-notch acting and well-developed scripts that set it apart from many other shows, not only Westerns; however, it was the sound effects that stood out the most. Listen carefully and one can hear many levels of sound that really helps transport the listener back to the old west. Vinny Lospinuso makes the Hall of Fame case for one of the most important figures in baseball that you never heard of, Doc Adams.
Building the Ballot: The Baseball Hall of Fame’s Era Committees
This Winter, the Early Baseball Era Committee will meet to vote on ten candidates for the Baseball Hall of Fame. This committee covers all of baseball before 1950. The ballot will consider players from the White major leagues and the Black major leagues as well as pioneers, managers, umpires, and executives. How will the committee distill over 100 years of baseball into just ten names? To complicate matters, this committee won't meet again for ten years. This episode covers the pioneers of the game, from its origins into the 20th century. SABR member Joe Williams joins the podcast. We talk about baseball's origins (candidates like Doc Adams and Will Wheaton), Black Baseball (Bud Fowler, Grant Johnson, George Stovey, Octavius Catto, etc.), Amateur Era players (Jim Creighton, Joe Leggett, Joe Sprague, etc.), National Association Era players (Ross Barnes, Dickey Pearce, Joe Start, etc.), and more (Al Reach, Chris Von der Ahe, John Gaffney, Lefty O'Doul, etc.). Today's trivia is brought to you by Perennial. Perennial's new plant-based drink “Daily Gut & Brain” is a blend of easily digestible nutrients crafted for gut and brain health. A convenient mini-meal, Daily Gut & Brain” is available now at the CVS Pharmacy in Wakefield. Now for some trivia. Did you know that the Burlingame State Campground The campground is 3,100 acres? It's rocky woodland that surrounds Watchaug Pond in Charlestown. This spacious campground features over 700 rustic campsites and 20 cabins. It also has bathrooms, showers, a playground, arcade, freshwater beach, canoe rentals and of course, hiking trails. Now, we turn our feature story…. The long-sought Church Street sidewalk project is nearing final approval. The Town Council, during a meeting scheduled for Monday at 5:30 p.m. at Town Hall, is expected to approve one of four potential options for the project, which some say has been discussed for as many as 30 years! There are several options of varying design that range from about $600,000 to $750,000. Local officials have long recognized the need to fix the sidewalks on Church Street, which is also called Route 216, but have been hesitant to use town funds for a state road. After so many years though, local officials appear ready to give up on hopes the state will come through. Councilor Philip Overton said, "This is nothing new. It has been going on for 30 years. The state has completely neglected their responsibility … we cherish and value our citizens in Bradford and we do need to get those sidewalks done". Councilor Karen Cioffi, who serves as chairwoman of the council's Public Works Subcommittee, offered a similar take. "This is a difficult subject — you should have decent sidewalks. I don't blame you for wanting to improve these sidewalks ... I agree they need to be fixed, but darn it I'm disgusted with this state. They've got money for the most ridiculous things but not for these sidewalks". Longtime member, Councilor Christopher Duhamel, said local officials had hoped that by having the town pay for design of the project the state might stand up and pay for construction. "The state said, 'no,' so it falls to the town." Councilor Suzanne Giorno said the council must make good on earlier promises. "I couldn't be more in favor of this ... it is long overdue". A majority of council members said they favored the mid-tier plan, but a formal vote is expected to occur on Monday. There are a lot of businesses in our community that are hiring right now, so we're excited to tell you about some new job listings. Today's Job posting comes from ALDI in Westerly. They're looking for part-time floor associates. You'll be responsible for merchandising and stocking product, cashiering, and cleaning up the store. Pay is up $14.30 per hour. If you're interested and think you'd be a good fit for the role you can apply using the link in our episode description. https://www.indeed.com/l-Westerly,-RI-jobs.html?vjk=29ee93bf88f3a0fe Today we're remembering the life of Marjorie Putnam Adams of Mystic. She was always dignified, strong and kept her sense of humor throughout her ordeal. Marjorie was born in New York City and after graduating from Stephens College in Columbia, Mo., she returned to New York City but soon moved to Westerly, R.I. She worked at Ethan Allen in furniture and interior design for many years until its store closed in Groton. Marjorie loved to read, especially English and American history, Shakespeare, politics, music and Broadway musicals, especially Sondheim. She wrote out countless famous quotations on post-its all over her home. She was ever so kind and generous towards her family and friends all of whom loved her and also loved how she made them laugh. Over fifteen years ago, she started a campaign to assure that her great-grandfather, Daniel Lucius "Doc" Adams, MD, "A Founding Father of Baseball" would be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. She did years of research and contacted baseball historians and libraries all over the U.S. Doc created the position of shortstop and set the measurement among the four bases at 90 feet which prevails to this day. He also made the balls and supervised the "turning" of the bats. He was the author of the original "Laws of Base Ball" in 1857 and presided over the Knickerbocker Base Ball Club as its President on and off for over a decade. Over the years Marjorie amassed a large circle of friends and avid supporters of Doc's candidacy. She was hoping to witness a successful vote this coming December. Marjorie is survived by her sister, nephews, nieces, their combined nine children; countless friends and a large, unofficial fan club dedicated to furthering the legacy of Doc Adams. Marjorie will be greatly missed. Thank you for taking a moment today to remember and celebrate Marjorie's life. That's it for today, we'll be back next time with more! Also, remember to check out our sponsor Perennial, Daily Gut & Brain, available at the CVS on Main St. in Wakefield! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Just in case you haven’t heard enough about the election, we compare some presidential home run records and remember some other number 46’s. We’ve talked about the Abner Doubleday myth before, but this week we dive even a little deeper, debunking the Henry Chadwick narrative and introduce Doc Adams who may have been even more influential in the history of baseball. We also look at the games of rounders, townball and even old cat as precursors to today’s game. Plus, Wax Pack Heroes takes on 1990 Fleer. This episode is like a history lesson in early baseball. To hear how fragile the beginning of organized baseball was from a great granddaughter of Doc Adams, the inventor of modern baseball is amazing! Consider this--without Doc's tireless efforts to unite various regions with the same rules, field dimensions and even baseballs and bats, America's Pastime could have never materialized into anything more than a kid's game. Hear Marjorie proudly talk about her relative with keen knowledge and passion especially the effort to get Doc Adams inducted into the Hall of Fame. If you think you know baseball's early history, this show will teach you a few things. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jim-campanis-jr/support
Starring William Conrad as Marshall Matt Dillon, Parley Baer as Chester, Georgie Ellis as Miss Kitty, and Howard McNear as Doc Adams... the best adult western on radio... and on television... Began in April of 1952 and ran until June of 1961 on CBS on Saturday and later Sunday evenings. Theme song was one of the most famous in all the history of radio... it was written in 10 minutes by Rex Koury! Sound effects in this series are tremendous... sometimes the sound effect is "quiet" so you can hear the boot steps echo in the streets, the gunfire richochet or the wind whistling through the center of Dodge. This is Gunsmoke... enjoy and thank you for listening!
One my favorite radio shows... Gunsmoke starring William Conrad as Marshall Matt Dillon, Parley Baer as Chester Proudfoot, Georgia Ellis as Kitty Russell and Howard McNear as Doc Adams. Excellent scripts, superb technical productions, top notch acting, and the most popular theme song ever played on radio... and there were some good ones. The track features about 2m 30s brief history of the series followed by "Custer" from Sept 22, 1957 on CBS. This is an Armed Forces Radio Service recording... Thanks for listening.

Boomer Boulevard Old Time Radio Podcast with Bob Bro Show #118-B --- April 30, 2018 Welcome to Boomer Boulevard --- Memory Lane for Baby Boomers, but everyone is welcome! Join us for a nostalgic listen to the following old time radio shows: 1. LINEUP 9/26/51 "The Fur Flaunting Floozy" In this episode Ben and Matt investigate a murder. The victim is Lorraine Oberhauser, a woman with a less than sterling reputation. The number one suspect is her boyfriend, who happens to be married to someone else. This episode is also known as "The Lorraine Oberhauser Story." 2. LINEUP 10/4/51 "The Wild, Wild Woman Case" A man and woman are moving about the country robbing jewelry stores. As we get to know the couple in the developing story, however, you may just wonder if the jewelry store owners are the only victims. This episode is also known as "The Story of Irene Oldin and John" 3. TALES OF THE TEXAS RANGERS 5/27/51 "Joy Ride" When a teenage couple steals a car, robs a liquor store and kills the proprietor, more and more focus is placed on the female ring leader. "Tales of the Texas Rangers" often had really heinous villains and this episode is a classic example. The fun of "Texas Rangers" is listening to the logical procedure Jace Pearson follows each week to get his man (or girl). I have often felt that this program should be boring - but it never is. 4. GUNSMOKE 5/28/55 "Cow Doctor" When Ben Pritcher sends his son, Jerry, to Dodge City to fetch Doc Adams, Matt becomes concerned. It's a well known fact that Ben and his wife hate doctors. Matt's suspicions end up being well founded --- when Doc and Matt arrive at Pritcher's ranch they learn none of the Pritchers are ailing. This is an outstanding story. The scripts featuring Doc are often touching and heartwarming and this one is no exception. Enjoy the truly crystal clear sound quality in this episode. Come and share some stories, memories, laughs and tears. http://boomerboulevard.com email: bob@boomerboulevard.com This is an archive presentation of my Old Time Radio Show that was first broadcast on January 17, 2010.

Brimingham is also known for it's rich musicial traditions and we'll pay homage to two iconic musical figures: Henry "Gip" Gipson whose 'juke joint' is the last standing music venue of it's kind in Alabama. Gip's Place has welcomed musicians from all over the world and every Saturday music lovers travel miles for an all-night music tailgate party on a "Sanford and Son" style lot. We will also introduce Dr. Frank Adams, Sr., a charter member of the Alabama Hall of Fame, who regaled us with stories of his life, a musical set and his time playing with greats like Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington. Sadly, Doc Adams passed away only one month after our meeting with him. We are honored to showcase his music throughout today's show. As a side note, our trip to Birmingham was a very pleasant surprise. As ethnic travelers we often wonder how we'll be perceived and treated. What we found in Birmingham (and Huntsville--another story for another time) were incredibly were welcoming and very hospitable people. Also, the food we enjoyed was GREAT. We highly recommend a visit to Birmingham, Alabama. There's a lot waiting for visitors to discover in the city "where freedom lives".

Dramatic Listening... the podcast where you learn English by listening to radio plays
Gunsmoke - The Gambler (Aired on CBS Radio, Oct 7, 1956): Matt: I guess an empty belly will do you more good than a sermon.Chester: All right, Sir, but I think a sermon would do me good too. You know, all about the evils of gambling? Gunsmoke, best loved Western of all time: In this episode of Dramatic Listening, we’re starting a new story — and a new genre once again. It’s an episode from the best-loved Western of all time, ‘Gunsmoke’. Gunsmoke was aired on the radio for 10 years from 1952-1961 and was also adapted to TV and played from 1955-1975. The radio years formed the characters in the show, but none of them moved over to the television show. The head writer wrote for both radio and T.V. When the West was young: The writers wanted a show that showed how rough and violent the West was really in the late 1800s. They went for a flawed hero instead of a perfect hero like the Lone Ranger. They were writing for adults, so they included sexual crimes like rape, prostitution, and violence like scalping, lynching. For the first three years, the show was unsponsored (no advertising) — CBS Radio was afraid that sponsors wouldn’t like the nature of the crimes and the seedy side of life portrayed in the show. They didn’t want to give these things up because they gave the show its sense of reality. Matt Dillon and Dodge City, Kansas: The story is set in Dodge City, Kansas where US Marshall Matt Dillon lives. Rough and rowdy cowboys often came into Dodge City to ‘whoop it up’ after weeks on the trail, herding cattle. Gunmen, gamblers, and medical ‘quacks’, often stopped in the town to do some business on their way through. Matt Dillon had to deal strongly with some, kindly with others. He was a man with a history (once a gunman himself), but now a man of authority who handled situations with fairness, and that earned him most people’s respect. However, as the representative of the law, he was often a target and that is probably why he never felt free to marry. Dodge City, Kansas as it was in the late 1800s [Image by WikiTravel, CC BY-SA 3.0] CAST: Matt Dillon: U.S. Marshall, a lawman Chester Proudfoot: Deputy Marshall, assistant to Matt Dillon Kathleen ‘Kitty’ Russel: a saloon girl (dancehall girl/prostitute) Doc Adams: a medical doctor Clint Ascombe: a riverboat gambler from Ohio Jim Cass: a local rancher near Dodge City, Kansas The Gambler, Scene 1 ~ Guilty Remorse: Today’s Gunsmoke radio play is called “The Gambler”, and not surprisingly, the theme is gambling. I’ve called this episode, “Guilty Remorse”. You see, gambling is one of Chester’s weaknesses, so today he is flat broke. He lost all his money playing faro last night — a card game that you won’t see in any casino today. This game was very popular during the California Gold Rush. It was well liked because a whole crowd of people could play it, but it became unpopular for two reasons. One, the cards were dealt from a spring-loaded box and it was easy for the dealer to rig the box in his favor. If he didn’t cheat, the house only had a narrow advantage over the players. In other words, the gambling house didn’t make enough money on this game. They were always paying out to a winner. I suppose it’s because so many people can play at once that there have to be a lot of losers too, so this time Chester is among the losers. He can’t even afford to eat so he’s skipping lunch. He seems to feel guilty about gambling and wishes Matt would lecture him. The lecture would make him feel like he’d “paid” for his failure to live right. Chester seems to have grown up going to church. He knows the preacher would tell him that gambling is wrong. But what is wrong with it, really? This whole Gunsmoke episode faces this issue, so we’ll let the story answer this question. Have fun learning the keywords with English-Chinese Flashcards and Games. Gunsmoke was set in Dodge City, Kansas during the thriving cattle days of the 1870s. Dunning notes that "The show drew critical acclaim for unprecedented realism." He also writes that among old-time radio fans, "Gunsmoke is routinely placed among the best shows of any kind and any time." (Dunning, 304) The show's cast, writing and sound effects have received much praise. The radio series, which first aired April 26, 1952, and ran until June 18, 1961, on CBS, starred William Conrad as Marshal Matt Dillon, Howard McNear as the ghoulish, brittle Doc Charles Adams, Georgia Ellis as Kitty Russell and Parley Baer as Dillon's assistant (but not his deputy) Chester Proudfoot. (On the television series, Doc's first name was changed to Galen, and Chester's last name was changed to Goode.) Chester's character had no surname until "Proudfoot" was ad libbed by Baer during a rehearsal early on, while Doc Adams was named after cartoonist Charles Addams. In a 1953 interview with Time, MacDonnell declared, "Kitty is just someone Matt has to visit every once in a while. We never say it, but Kitty is a prostitute, plain and simple." (Dunning, 304) William Conrad was actually one of the last actors who auditioned for the role of Marshal Dillon. He was already one of radio's busiest actors and had a powerful and distinctive baritone voice. Though Meston championed him, MacDonnell thought that Conrad might be overexposed. During his audition, however, Conrad won over MacDonnell after reading just a few lines. The show was distinct from other radio westerns, as the dialogue was often slow and halting, and due to the outstanding sound effects, listeners had a nearly palpable sense of the prairie terrain where the show was set. The effects were subtle but multilayered and utilized very well, given the show's spacious feel. Dunning writes, "The listener heard extraneous dialogue in the background, just above the muted shouts of kids playing in an alley. He heard noises from the next block, too, where the inevitable dog was barking." (Dunning, 305)
