In this special episode, Pete and Julie are joined by Sarah Severson, Sr. Manager of Compensation at Medline, live from the annual World at Work Total Rewards event in San Antonio, TX, for a practical conversation on how compensation is evolving inside fast-growing, complex organizations. The conversation explores what happens when family-owned and high-growth companies scale faster than their compensation structures, why job architecture becomes a critical foundation for everything downstream, and how M&A, global expansion, and Workday implementations expose the need for common language, cleaner data, and stronger governance. Pete, Julie, and Sarah talk the practical side of AI in compensation, from using Copilot for Excel and manager communications to experimenting with AI-assisted job grading and market cleanup. Sarah offers a grounded practitioner view on where AI can accelerate work, where human judgment still matters, and why compensation teams must balance innovation with governance, transparency, and manager enablement. Plus, a candid look at the realities of modernizing compensation in a growing enterprise, and why the future of comp is not just about better data, but better decisions, better communication, and stronger alignment across the business. Debut filmmaker Toroes Thomas joins Dr. Nii-Quartelai fresh off the premiere of his narrative feature Sr. at the 2026 American Black Film Festival (ABFF) — and he came to tell the truth. Drawn directly from Toroes's own life and the sudden, shattering loss of his father, Sr. is a film about love, grief, fatherhood, and what it means to find your footing when the person who was supposed to hold it together — couldn't. We go deep on the craft of storytelling, the raw economics of Black independent film, the emotional weight of turning personal pain into public art, and what Toroes wants every young filmmaker watching to hear. This isn't just a conversation about movies. It's a conversation about what we carry, what we create, and how we survive.

In this episode, Dave and Jamison answer these questions: Hey guys. This question comes all the way from New Zealand. Recently discovered your podcast about a month ago, and have been catching up with older episodes on morning walks ever since - you guys are awesome. Anyway - the question: Is it more beneficial to work for a company where the software itself is the product (SaaS etc) or does it no longer matter given the rise of the robots anyway? For context - I've been working for a telco/internet company for just over five year. Initially when I joined there was a huge roadmap of software to develop internally - things like customer facing portals, diagnostic tools, and of course internal tooling. However over the past couple of years, it has just been cost cutting and downsizing. Given that the company is not in the business of selling software, our department has been stripped to skeletal level just to ‘keep the lights on'. So, I've started applying for jobs at SaaS companies on the basis that even with AI, there will at least be a continuous roadmap to work on. Or, is this a case of ‘snakes in the greener grass'… or whatever the idiom is. Keen to hear your thoughts! I'm an EM about 7 months into a role at a larger private software company. When I joined, the explicit expectation was 1 team (~8 direct reports). I'm happy to say my team has crushed it: award-winning product launch, clear monetization path, company IPO positioning. I made some bold headcount decisions, reduced spend, built the team's trust back up, and things are now actually quite great. I'm generally a cynical person and so I don't say that lightly :) Last week my boss told me I'm taking on a second team, bringing me to 16 direct reports. When I asked if this was a promotion track, he said no. Apparently the expectation is now ALL EMs manage 2+ teams. Problem: the internal HR leveling rubric still says 2+ teams is a Sr. EM expectation, which I didn't apply for… precisely because I didn't want it. When I pointed this out, he said “that's out of date, and you're behind your peers because you only have been running one team”. I did the job I was hired to do, did it well, and the goalposts moved without anyone telling me. The kicker: the team I'm absorbing used to be run by a Sr. EM, who now has just one team!! So a Sr. EM is shrinking scope while I'm handed their struggling team and told I'm behind. It wasn't framed as a vote of confidence. It felt like a quiet reassignment. Three questions: Am I being oversensitive to just poor communication (it's possible the senior EM is being managed out and I shouldn't use that as a benchmark)? Should I push for a comp increase since I'm now doing 2x the scope I was hired for? And how hard do I push back? One constraint: I'm a couple months from planned medical leave and can't afford to leave before then, so I have limited leverage.

I've seen a pattern of senior ICs deciding to quit to bet on themselves, but we rarely get to see what it took to get there.Julia Fei, Sr. Data Scientist at Notion (and my dear creator friend), just made her decision to leave her dream job to pursue something she's always been curious about. But it was a calculated, deliberate decision that she spent years preparing for.In this week's episode of Office Drama, we reveal the inner drama of Julia's thought process and the conversations she's had navigating the transition. In this ep, we talk about:→ why Julia quit Notion when she genuinely loved her team, her manager, and her job→ how to know if you're actually growing or just getting comfortable→ why "stability" is a scam→ the double life of being a creator in tech→ how to build a financial runway for the leap before you're ready to take it→ and how to know when it's finally time to take a risk on yourselfThis episode is for anyone who has done everything right and still felt like they were playing it too safe. Julia is one of the most calculated, self-aware people I know and watching her finally bet on herself after years of preparation is exactly the kind of story I started this show to tell.→ Find Julia:https://www.linkedin.com/in/juliafei/https://www.youtube.com/@juliafeihttps://www.instagram.com/julia.fei/https://www.tiktok.com/@julia.feiSubmit your Coworker Confessions

On today's Hour 1 of the Patrick Madrid Show, Patrick provides insights to engaging questions from listeners. Anita emails in and wants to know if there is a starter kit for praying novenas, Gabe asks if movies can have curses or demons attached to them, and Patrick assures listeners that one doesn't actually have to say the words "I consecrate" for a consecration to be authentic. Plus, more questions from the audience including, what is a humeral veil and what are "liturgical digits"? Email – Anita – Is there a starter kit for praying novenas? Sr. Maria Francesca - some bishops had photos of wearing gloves... does this have to do with touching host? Can priests wear them too? Email – Gabe: Can a movie have cruses or demons attached to it? Break 1 Email – Cynthia: Why didn’t the bishops explicitly say the word’s consecration? The priest nowhere says “ I consecrate this bread” during the Eucharistic prayer. You don’t have to use the word “I consecrate” as these words are not integral to the act of a consecration. During Signs of the Times, Ashley and Zac unpack Pope Leo's trip to Spain and a new Sagrada Familia Lego Set, and they talk sports with Catholic perspectives on the World Cup and NBA Finals—featuring some words from O'Hare Fellow Ed Desciak. It's off to Sherwood Forest with two of the stars of The Adventures of Robin Hood, the 1938 lavish Technicolor production that pits Errol Flynn's Robin against Basil Rathbone's vile Sir Guy. It's one of the best (maybe the best) film adaptation of the classic legend, and it still thrills audiences today. We'll hear Olivia de Havilland (Maid Marian) in "Voyage Through Darkness" (originally aired on CBS on September 7, 1944) and Alan Hale, Sr. (Little John) in "The Leading Citizen of Pratt County" (originally aired on CBS on May 30, 1946). Plus, Edmond O'Brien stars in a radio retelling of Robin Hood from Family Theatre (originally aired on Mutual on July 27, 1949). Check out this TCM special on the making of The Adventures of Robin Hood!

Repeating workouts to improve your skill at doing them - how to sharpen into the piece, count down, ways to swap with bow four. How not to waste strokes and ways to start on the right stroke rate. Execution quality is a performance variable in its own right. Timestamps 01:00 Execution quality matters What do you think is happening when you do a workout? Execution skill improves with repetition. There are repeating workouts in any training program - this builds fitness and your ability to do that practice. The second time you do a workout, you know what it feels like, how to make your effort work consistently across the whole piece. This is performance-relevant knowledge. Poor execution comes from wasted strokes at the start of the piece, being at the wrong stroke rate, the wrong pressure, taking 5 strokes to get to the specified stroke rate. This affects your pacing (too hard or too light) and also changeovers (steps up in rate for example). Your physiological adaptation needs to be as good as it possibly can be. Over a season there is a compounding effect of successful physiological response to training stimulus. 03:45 Use a countdown Get into the work and don't waste your approach. For a 20 stroke firm / 10 light piece. All the 20 firm need to be at the right stroke rate and intensity. Use the last few light pressure strokes to build pressure and rate. By counting down into the work piece so each stroke builds to the stroke #1 rate and pressure. Have in your mind the target stroke rate - what does SR 24 feel like? Build your familiarity without needing a stroke coach to count rating. 06:30 Build in the right order First add pressure before adding rate. Rate without pressure leaves you "spinning" especially at rates over 24. Call "Going up in 3 -2 1 - GO" or "Going up, on the next stroke [wait one stroke] now". Our cox calls "Build pressure now'; two strokes pass then 'Rate up now'. At rates below 25 it's easy to hit the rate just using increased pressure - it is harder at rates from 26 and above to get the rate - you have to be more deliberate building the pressure then the rate. Start a change like that at the correct place in the stroke cycle. Make these changes at the catch. The pressure change starts at the catch; stroke rate changes begin at the catch. To do this effectively, athletes must know they are making a change half a stroke cycle in advance of the change. Call the change at the FINISH. This gives them advance warning of the change. There are changes which happen at the finish like stepping down in stroke rate or a rhythm call and these must be called at the catch. Be half a stroke ahead of time if you give the calls. Listen to when the cox or the caller made the call to change. Your goal for the workout is to execute more and more successfully.
