Episode 88 is Part 2 of my conversation with Jes Skolnik. As I mentioned last week, Jes writes for Bandcamp Daily, the music journalism arm of the Greatest Music Distribution Platform of all time. Besides being an incredibly gifted music journalist, they are also a musician, a trauma survivor, former addict, and a sexual assault survivor. This week we talk about toxic jobs, the journey from freelancer to senior editor, their struggle with drugs and depression, and what they do for self-care! CONTENT WARNING: this episode contains frank and difficult discussions about sexual assault, drug use, and suicidal ideation. This week on Missaligned, we've got a great chat with Jes Skolnik, the Managing Editor over at Bandcamp. Our chat with Jes includes life at Bandcamp, navigating the music industry world as someone who is intersex and identifies as non-binary, and a little discussion about the New York Times' "Rock's Not Dead" piece that leads into a segue about how not to write about women in the music industry.

Episode #93: People often say that if you make good music, the fans will follow. So does good music rise to the top? And what is the top? On this episode, we talk with Jes Skolnik, managing editor at Bandcamp. Through Bandcamp Daily, Jes makes a point to highlight lesser-known artists who might be overlooked by outlets like Pitchfork or Rolling Stone. We also hear from Public Display PR's Sierra Haager, whose goal through her boutique PR agency is to get high-profile coverage for indie bands. Genesis Breyer P-Orridge is seeing the future in the past. Earlier this month, the Throbbing Gristle musician, poet, and performance/visual artist spoke with Pitchfork writer Jes Skolnik. P-Orridge was, as usual, a font of opinions, with no shortage of scathing remarks on the resurgence of Thatcherist fear politics, experiences with transphobia, and even the annoying proclivities of one popular rapper du jour. However, P-Orridge also shared many beatific insights on the nature of creative collaboration, the purpose of industrial rock as “an electric newspaper,” and how we all can go “the way of the spirit and the soul.”
