Nightlife News Breakdown with Philip Clark, joined by Emily Barrett, Managing Editor of The Saturday Paper.
Hello and welcome to The Rob Burgess Show. I am, of course, your host, Rob Burgess. On this our 303rd episode, our returning guest is… me! I have done around two dozen previous solo episodes of this podcast: Episode 41 - Rob Burgess Episode 62 - Rob Burgess [II] Episode 84 - Rob Burgess [III] Episode 100 - Rob Burgess and Ash Burgess Episode 117 - Rob Burgess [IV] Episode 131 - Rob Burgess [V] Episode 135 - Rob Burgess [VI] Episode 182 - Rob Burgess [VII] Episode 189 - Rob Burgess [VIII] Episode 194 - Rob Burgess [IX] Episode 200 - Rob Burgess [X] Episode 205 - Rob Burgess [XI] Episode 215 - Rob Burgess [XII] Episode 220 - Rob Burgess [XIII] Episode 226 - Rob Burgess [XIV] Episode 230 - Rob Burgess [XV] Episode 243 - Rob Burgess [XVI] Episode 252 - Rob Burgess [XVII] Episode 265 - Rob Burgess [XVIII] Episode 267 - Rob Burgess [XIX] Episode 279 - Rob Burgess [XX] Episode 280 - Rob Burgess [XXI] Episode 282 - Rob Burgess [XXII] Episode 286 - Rob Burgess [XXIII] Episode 294 - Rob Burgess [XXIV] Episode 295 - Rob Burgess [XXV] Episode 296 – Rob Burgess [XXVI] Episode 302 - Rob Burgess [XXVII] I am a 45-time award-winning journalist whose work has appeared in print, radio, online and television. I am currently Senior Reporter for ThinkAdvisor. Most recently, I was Reporter for Financial Planning Magazine; Technology Reporter for Wealth Management Magazine; Editor of the Wabash Plain Dealer; News Editor of NUVO; Managing Editor of the Indiana Lawyer; and City Editor, Opinion Page Editor and Editorial Board Member of the Kokomo Tribune. I was also a reporter at WFHB, the Times-Mail, The Reporter-Times, Ukiah Daily Journal and Ukiah Valley Television. Oh yeah, and I'm also the proprietor of the podcast, The Rob Burgess Show. A quick programming note: Most of this episode features me playing my ukulele and singing, something I also did on Episode 282 at the Balboa Pier in Newport Beach, California; on Episode 286 at the Fremont Street Experience in Las Vegas; and Episode 296 at the French Market in New Orleans. I did also sing and play guitar near the end of Episode 258 featuring my friend, Mark Rohrer. This time, I busked on May 3, 2026 at Lake Eola Park in Orlando, Florida. I only played for about a half an hour before an Orange County Parks Department Employee came up to me. “Sir, you can play, you just can't be busking, alright?” the guy said, in what sounded like an Australian accent. “Why not?” I said. “It's against park rules.” “Really?” “Yeah.” “I called city hall. And I wasn't informed of that.” “You can play your instrument here, you just can't be busking, asking for money.” “I don't ask for money. I don't have a sign.” “OK then. OK cool. Cool.” “You sure?” “Yeah no worries.” But, as you'll hear, I did not think he thought it was cool. So, I left soon after. In this episode you'll hear only one song from the performance, “Why Don't You Love Me” by Hank Williams. Business and finance news from the Asia-Pacific. Asian stocks hovered near record highs in holiday-thinned trading as optimism that the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz will restore oil flows and curb inflation pressures buoyed risk appetite. The MSCI Asia Pacific Index was little changed after five straight days of gains, while the chip-heavy Kospi was the top performer in the region, jumping 2.6%. A gauge of the sector in the US surged more than 6% to an all-time high, led by Intel Corp., after President Donald Trump said the company would work with Apple Inc. to design and manufacture semiconductors in the country. We speak to Lianting Tu, Bloomberg's Managing Editor for Asia Equities. Plus - The US-Iran interim peace deal took effect and shipping started returning to the Strait of Hormuz as the US declared an end to its blockade and a complex negotiating period over Tehran's nuclear program began in earnest. US Vice President JD Vance told reporters Thursday at the White House that the 60-day clock for working out the contentious details in the so-called memorandum of understanding signed late Wednesday had started ticking. He downplayed concerns Iran could eventually impose tolls on traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a move that would turn the crucial transport chokepoint — widely considered international waters — into a moneymaker for Tehran. Bloomberg TV hosts Haidi Stroud-Watts and Shery Ahn speaks to Jessie Moritz, Senior Lecturer in Political Economy -- ANU Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Beauty is one of the most celebrated words in art and faith conversations, but it may also be one of the most misunderstood. Is beauty simply what pleases the eye, or is it something deeper? Can beauty exist alongside suffering, loss, and the grotesque? And what happens when we settle for beauty that comforts us while avoiding the realities that transform us?What if beauty requires darkness, mystery, and even lament in order to reveal its deepest meaning? In this roundtable discussion, Stephen Roach and guests Corey Frey, Liv Ross, and Scott Aasman wrestle with beauty not as sentimentality or surface appeal, but as a force capable of holding together truth, goodness, suffering, and hope.KEY TOPICSWhy beauty can feel inauthentic when it is removed from struggleThe original meaning of "glamour" as a veil designed to trap and deceive, and why that etymology still matters for artists todayHow the three transcendentals — goodness, truth, and beauty — function like a trinity: remove one and the others collapse into vanity, brutality, or cover-upWhat Edmund Burke and Kant meant by the sublime, and why terror and beauty belong together rather than apartThe real context behind Dostoevsky's phrase "beauty will save the world," drawn from The Idiot, and why stripping it from that argument changes everythingThomas Kinkade's stated goal of painting a world where the Fall never happened, and what his private life and Andy Warhol quote reveal about the cost of bypassing Holy SaturdayWhy form without substance is essentially pornographic, and how true beauty requires the material and the spiritual coming togetherHow artistic isolation stunts creative roots the way a tree grown in perfect conditions falls in the first storm and why community, friction, and disagreement strengthen both the artist and the workAbout the Guests:Corey Frey is a multidisciplinary artist, writer, and co-founder of The Well Collaborative, a community dedicated to creativity, curiosity, and culture. He lives in Maryland with his wife and continues to explore the intersections of art, faith, and imagination.Liv Ross is an urban monk, poet, essayist, and Managing Editor of Traces Journal. Writing from the Ozarks, her work explores place, wonder, memory, and spiritual formation. Her first book, The Blackbird Ballad, was published by Solum Literary Press in 2026.Scott Aasman is an award-winning illustrator, educator, and co-founder of Salt Cellar Arts, an arts-focused community for the spiritually attentive and creatively engaged.
