In the heart of Nazi-occupied Paris, a Jewish family finds unexpected protection within their tight-knit, working-class community. It is 1937, on the eve of World War II, and young Bernard lives with his Polish-immigrant family in a lively Parisian courtyard. Though few other Jews reside there, the Parkiets feel a deep sense of belonging among the courtyard's vibrant cast of characters. For Bernard, the courtyard is both sanctuary and playground—a magical world where he watches his father varnish furniture, gets into mischief with irritable neighbors, and shares pain au chocolat with his best friend, Titi. But when the German occupation descends on Paris, Bernard's world is upended. In July 1942, just hours before the Nazis arrive to arrest the Parkiet family, their neighbors unite in a courageous act of solidarity, hiding them in a vacant warehouse. The courtyard, once a place of laughter and routine, transforms into a refuge shadowed by fear. At only nine years old, Bernard shoulders the dangerous responsibility of venturing out each day to find food for his family. Even with the unwavering support of their neighbors, peril lurks everywhere including in the very courtyard that once felt so safe. https://www.alexamorris.com/http://www.yourlotandparcel.orgSupport the show

June 29, Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul - The Church Shall Prevail

Catholic Daily Reflections

Read Online“Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the Kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” Matthew 16:17–19Though the Church will suffer in many ways, She will ultimately overcome all things. As we celebrate the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, we are reminded of this truth by pondering their lives as two of the greatest pillars of the Church. Neither imprisonments, persecutions, nor apparent defeats kept them from fulfilling the mission God gave them. Likewise, the Church will never be overcome, for She remains under the guardianship of divine providence. The Church shall prevail for one simple reason: Jesus said so. He founded the Church upon the Twelve Apostles, giving unique and supreme authority to Peter: “I will give you the keys to the Kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” Though Peter's given name was Simon, Jesus changed it to Peter—Petros in Greek and Cephas in Aramaic. Both terms can be used as a man's name but also mean “rock.” Hence, Peter, and the Apostles in union with him, become the rock and immovable foundation upon which the Church is built.By giving Peter “the keys to the Kingdom of heaven,” Jesus granted him singular authority to teach, govern, and sanctify with divine authority. This authority did not end with Peter; it is passed on to his successors through the office of bishop. Since Peter died in Rome, Rome remains the see of the Church's divinely established governance.Though Peter offers the Church the stability and clarity necessary as the immovable rock foundation, Paul reflects the Church's missionary role to bring the Gospel to the ends of the earth. This is seen especially in today's second reading, where Paul, facing the end of his earthly life, proclaims that he has “competed well,” “finished the race,” and “kept the faith.” His life was poured out as a libation for Christ, tirelessly laboring to make the Gospel known to all nations. While Peter ensures the Church's unity and fidelity to divine truth, Paul embodies her zeal to spread that truth to every corner of the world, calling all people into communion with Christ and His Church.Peter and Paul remain spiritually alive and active today through the unbroken tradition God established through them. Often at World Youth Day, when the Holy Father is present, young people chant, “You are Peter!” It is a beautiful expression of their faith in this foundational truth Christ established. Though every pope is a sinner like the rest of humanity, faith leads us to look beyond human weakness to see the successor of Saint Peter, the solid rock to whom Christ entrusted the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven. Thus, Peter's mission remains alive today, not only in the person of the Holy Father, but also in our faith in his divinely given authority.Saint Paul remains alive today through the ongoing fulfillment of the mission God gave him. His burning zeal to proclaim the Gospel lives on in every missionary endeavor, every act of evangelization, and every effort to spread the Good News to the ends of the earth. His spirit is especially present in those who courageously preach the Word, catechize the young, defend the faith, and labor tirelessly for the salvation of souls. Just as Peter ensures unity and fidelity, Paul inspires action and outreach, so that the Church may extend Christ's Kingdom to every land and heart.Reflect today on these pillars of the Church and acknowledge the living witness they gave and continue to give. Renew your faith in Peter, alive in the Holy Father, professing him as the rock foundation. See Paul at work by recognizing the missionary activity of the Church, carried out by countless souls with zeal and courage. Allow their witness to inspire within you a deeper love for the Church, and commit yourself anew to the mission entrusted to you: to remain firmly rooted in the truth and to bring that truth to the world with boldness and charity.Saints Peter and Paul, God called you in powerful and unique ways, making you pillars of the Church. Please pray for us, and for the entire Church, that we may continue the mission Christ entrusted to you. I especially entrust myself to that mission and pray that I may remain faithful to it in imitation of your example. Saints Peter and Paul, pray for us. Jesus, I trust in You.  Image: Saint Peter & Saint Paul by Lawrence OP, CC BY-NC-ND 2.0.Source: Free RSS feed from catholic-daily-reflections.com — Copyright © 2026 My Catholic Life! Inc. On this episode of The Project Endure Podcast, Joe Rinaldi sits down with Shannon Campbell — gym owner, endurance athlete, and member of the Project Endure team — for a deeply honest conversation about transformation, sobriety, and learning how to prevail through life's hardest seasons. Shannon shares the story behind the name of her gym, "Prevail," inspired by a former coworker's battle with cancer and the belief that people are capable of overcoming opposing forces. She opens up about the difficult chapters of her life, including her parents' divorce, struggles with alcohol, unhealthy relationships, financial debt, and the years she spent blaming others before taking ownership of her choices and direction. Joe and Shannon explore the mindset shift from "having to" versus "getting to," discussing how choosing gratitude and perspective can completely reshape the way people approach adversity. The conversation also dives into Shannon's journey of quitting drinking, paying off debt, building confidence through fitness, and ultimately leaving the security of a full-time job to pursue her mission of helping others through her gym community. From marathon training and bodybuilding competitions to sobriety, consistency, and embracing hard things on purpose, this episode is a powerful reminder that endurance is built through small daily choices and the willingness to keep showing up for yourself. Give this episode a listen as we dive deep into Shannon's life and learn about what persistence, perspective, and endurance mean to her.   If you found value in this episode and would like to help us grow, please leave the podcast a review on your platform of choice and share it with a friend(s). Renowned journalist, freedom advocate, and host of the Kim Iversen Show, Kim Iversen joins the conversation for a substantive look at why she walked away from a mainstream career most broadcasters spend a lifetime chasing. A 2019 Serena Shim Award laureate for Uncompromised Integrity in Journalism with prior nationally syndicated runs on Premiere Radio Networks and a high profile cohosting stint on The Hill's Rising, Iversen explains that her break from establishment framing was never ideological. It was procedural. She began verifying claims for herself, watched the full context behind the edited soundbites she was being handed, and discovered the gap between what audiences were being told and what had actually been said. From there she lays out the herd mechanics with surgical clarity: shame labels are not descriptions, they are compliance tools, and the powers that be understand that if you can pressure the herd back into line, the 30 percent who refuse to bend become irrelevant. The conversation then maps the current transition of power with names attached. Peter Thiel, the Ellison family, and Jeff Bezos, in Iversen's thesis, are not merely accumulating wealth, they are quietly assuming the role once held by monarchs and political dynasties through control of AI infrastructure, while elected leaders are being reduced to mascots in the same way King Charles is a mascot today. Her warning is direct: the technocrats want the actual power now, not just the money, and AI will become the lever they pull to get it. On COVID, she refuses to let her opposition be reframed as ideological. It was mathematical from day one. The lockdown strategy could not work, would crush small mom and pop businesses while enriching the largest financial interests, and she said so out loud while every progressive peer in her circle was calling her a grandma killer. Iversen closes on a thesis that should comfort no one in power and almost everyone watching: human nature is hardwired to revolt against being run by machines, the pendulum always corrects across generations, and Gen Z, in her read, is the generation that will smash the cameras. She also opens up about her view that the afterlife appears to be learning based rather than judgment based, a perspective drawn from years of research into accounts of consciousness beyond death. What began, officially, as a mission to attack Hezbollah leadership and military strongholds is now indisputably much larger and, by all indications, more imperial. Israel is applying what it terms a “Gaza model” to the region south of Lebanon's Litani River–meaning the leveling of buildings and destruction of civilian infrastructure. Its finance minister explicitly revealed plans to annex the territory, decreeing that “The Litani must become [Israel's] new border with the state of Lebanon.” The codename of the operation–Eternal Darkness–does not suggest that this is going to end any time soon. On today's PREVAIL podcast, Greg Olear speaks with the Middle East-based photojournalist Courtney Bonneau, who has been reporting live from the war zone of southern Lebanon, about the devastation she's seeing on the ground. Trusting God during conflict and injustice isn’t passive—it’s deeply intentional. In Genesis 26:19–22, Isaac faced repeated opposition as others claimed the wells he and his servants dug. Instead of fighting back, he chose to move forward in faith, trusting that God would provide space for him to flourish. His story reveals a powerful truth: God’s plans will prevail, even when others come against us. Highlights Isaac faced repeated conflict but chose trust over striving Not every battle requires a fight—some require faith and surrender God’s provision cannot be blocked by others’ actions Trusting God often means releasing control and resisting retaliation Scripture shows both times to act and times to be still God is faithful to restore, provide, and make room in His timing Even in injustice, God is working for our good and His glory Links & Resources: Have an idea for our newsletter? Full Transcript Below: Trusting God's Plans to Prevail When Others Come Against UsBy Jennifer Slattery Bible Reading:Isaac’s servants dug in the valley and discovered a well of fresh water there. But the herders of Gerar quarreled with those of Isaac and said, “The water is ours!” So he named the well Esek, because they disputed with him. Then they dug another well, but they quarreled over that one also; so he named it Sitnah. He moved on from there and dug another well, and no one quarreled over it. He named it Rehoboth, saying, “Now the Lord has given us room and we will flourish in the land.” (Genesis 26:19-22, NIV). Have you ever had someone use your kindness and integrity against you? Or betray you in some way, and you wanted to fight back, but sensed God telling you to trust Him to rectify the situation? For years, I watched my husband endure the painful effects of slander and parental alienation. He was married before me to a woman who was verbally and psychologically abusive. When they divorced, his ex told his children that he’d abandoned them and didn’t love them. Then, once he married me and he and I gave birth to our daughter, his ex told his kids that we were his “replacement family.” While he diligently showed up for them and financially provided for them, that negative narrative became their reality. To say this devastated him would be a huge understatement. And the cruel injustice of it all angered me. I vacillated between feeling frustrated with God for not intervening on my timeline, and trusting that one day He would make things right. That was decades ago, and while my husband, sadly, remains estranged with some of his children, he’s been able to rebuild (and is rebuilding) his relationship with one of his daughters. He’s also been able to connect with three grandchildren, something we’d previously feared might never occur. I reflected upon my husband’s experience and God’s faithfulness this morning as I read Genesis 26. This occurred after Abraham’s death and well into Isaac’s adult years. Like his father before him, he endured what Scripture terms “a severe famine” and moved to an area of Gerar, presumably in search of food and access to water. The Lord, likely alert to the anxiety this would’ve caused, told Isaac not to go to Egypt (with its constant access to the Nile). He also promised to provide for and bless him. This reminds us that God knows precisely how to comfort and strengthen our fearful souls! In the middle of Isaac’s life-or-death crisis, He spoke powerful assurances to his soul. These divine commitments probably allowed him to remain calm and faith-filled later, when the people of the land continually sabotaged or laid claim to the wells his servants dug or reopened. This occurred three times, during which Isaac could’ve fought back. He might even have been successful. Genesis 26 tells us that He became quite rich and powerful (vs. 13, 16). Instead, he simply moved on, and once he reached the place he later called Rehoboth, he dug another well, and “This time there was no dispute over it” (Gen. 26:22b). Recognizing God’s provision, he proclaimed, “At last the LORD has created enough space for us to proper in the land” (Gen. 26:22, NLT). Intersecting Life & Faith: Please don’t misunderstand me. I’m not saying Christ-followers should never advocate for themselves. Throughout Scripture, we see numerous instances when God directs His people to stand firm against evil, advocate for and defend others, or take hold of a blessing He provided. Ancient Israel taking possession of the Promised Land is a perfect example. But there are also times when he invites us to “Be still and know that He is God” (Psalm 46:10). This seems to be how he directed Joseph, introduced in Genesis 37. It also appears to be how He led Isaac in the chapter surrounding today’s passage. Did you catch how God spoke truth and assurance to Isaac before the well events? This reads like He was saying, in essence, “You don’t have to fight and strive for your survival, because I, Almighty God, will bless you.” He says the same to us. He is bigger than any injustice we’ll face or betrayal we’ll endure. He is faithful to protect, defend, and provide for His children. Sometimes, He invites us to play an active role in that protection or provision. Other times, He asks us to trust while He works the situation for our good and His glory, just as He promised in Romans 8:28. Regardless of how He leads, we can trust in His attentive care. He is the God of abundance, who owns all, sees all, and remains sovereign over all. But more than that, He is a God of tender, merciful love who sees our pain, heals our hurts, quiets our fears, and tends to all of our needs, physical, spiritual, and emotional. If you are struggling with a present or past betrayal or injustice, perhaps reflect on and rehearse this passage: Do not fret because of those who are evilor be envious of those who do wrong;for like the grass they will soon wither, like green plants they will soon die away. Trust in the Lord and do good;dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart (Ps. 37:1-4).
