Today, James is joined by Robyn and Jay the Engineer to talk about romantic and business relationships. They share personal stories of moving from friends to being in love and discuss how intimacy works in different kinds of relationships, including those at work and in the community. A key focus of our discussion is the intriguing idea of moving from the 'friend zone' to deeper, more meaningful connections. We delve into the importance of sustained, escalating, reciprocal, and personal self-disclosure in building intimacy. This exploration is anchored by insights from the research paper "The Experimental Generation of Interpersonal Closeness," which sheds light on the patterns essential for developing close relationships.  Below is the full list of 36 questions for "closeness-generating", taken from the paper:1. Given the choice of anyone in the world, whom would you want as a dinner guest? 2. Would you like to be famous? In what way? 3. Before making a telephone call, do you ever rehearse what you are going to say? Why? 4. What would constitute a "perfect" day for you? 5. When did you last sing to yourself? To someone else? 6. If you were able to live to the age of 90 and retain either the mind or body of a 30-year-old for the last 60 years of your life, which would you want? 7. Do you have a secret hunch about how you will die? 8. Name three things you and your partner appear to have in common. 9. For what in your life do you feel most grateful? 10. If you could change anything about the way you were raised, what would it be? 11. Take 4 minutes and tell your partner your life story in as much detail as possible. 12. If you could wake up tomorrow having gained any one quality or ability, what would it be? Set II 13. If a crystal ball could tell you the truth about yourself, your life, the future, or anything else, what would you want to know? 14. Is there something that you've dreamed of doing for a long time? Why haven't you done it? 15. What is the greatest accomplishment of your life? 16. What do you value most in a friendship? 17. What is your most treasured memory? 18. What is your most terrible memory? 19. If you knew that in one year you would die suddenly, would you change anything about the way you are now living? Why? 20. What does friendship mean to you? 21. What roles do love and affection play in your life? 22. Alternate sharing something you consider a positive characteristic of your partner. Share a total of 5 items. 23. “The 36 Questions That Lead to Love” by Daniel Jones on The New York Times challenges friends and couples to be candid through a series of personal questions. There are three sets of twelve questions each, with increasing levels of vulnerability. This activity is based on a psychology study that explored how intimate and honest conversation creates connection and increases closeness, even if the participants were strangers at the start.  After starting a podcast and business together, we know a lot about one another, but we wanted to challenge ourselves in this episode to explore even deeper levels of closeness through this activity. Tune in as we share what our perfect day looks like, how often we sing to ourselves, and what one quality or ability we would want to gain. As yet another year comes to a close, it's always nice to look back on past episodes and hear what's changed over the years. Today we're playing one of Janet's favorite episodes: our very first episode of Season 4 (we're now on Season 16!), which she loves for the intimate conversation we shared while recording. We answered Set I in this episode, but you can also go back to listen to Part 2 on Episode 37: 36 Questions to Fall in Love (Part II). Episode summary: There are 36 questions that have been shown over and over again in lab studies to help people fall in love or form fast connections. In this week's episode, we bring back Kristen Meinzer and Jolenta Greenberg of By the Book podcast*.* They recruit their husbands to ask and answer these questions and then fill us in on the surprising ways they helped each of their relationships.
