Welcome to the latest episode of the midierror meets... interview series speaking to all kinds of people working in music and sound. In this episode, we're speaking with COSEY FANNI TUTTI, co-founder of the boundry-pushing Throbbing Gristle and performance-art duo COUM Transmissions alongside Genesis-P-Orridge. Cosey is known for her expansive electronic explorations - encompassing abstract, industrial, ambient, and experimental music, which has often been deeply connected to her own performance art. She was said to be a "wrecker of civilisation" by a Conservative MP after an art exhibition called "Prostitution" in 1976, and she continues to shake up what is deemed to be mainstream. She has released a succession of albums alongside Chris Carter, as Carter Tutti as well as Chris & Cosey, with the duo also collaborating with Nik Colk Void on CARTER TUTTI VOID material in subsequent years. In 2012, she soundtracked 'Delia Derbyshire: The Myths and Legendary Tapes' - a film about the influential composer using sounds collected from Delia's own attic tapes. Her book 'Art Sex Music' is a multi-award winning Book of the Year, and she has a new solo album out this Friday 13th June, entitled 2t2. http://www.coseyfannitutti.com/ http://www.chrisandcosey.com/ https://cargorecordsdirect.co.uk/products/cosey-fanni-tutti-2t2 This is series 2, episode 1 and there are 50 previous episodes available now featuring Fatboy Slim, CJ Bolland, Andrew Huang, Tim Exile, High Contrast, Mylar Melodies, Infected Mushroom, DJ Rap, John Grant and many more. Available on Soundcloud, Spotify, Apple Music and Bandcamp.
"I'm an individualist." The Throbbing Gristle co-founder on extreme experimentation, difficult women and her new album, 2t2. As long as underground culture has existed, there have been pockets of resistance—people at the fringes who challenge societal expectations and create work that pushes against societal norms. Cosey Fanni Tutti is one of them. She's a founding member of the defunct British band Throbbing Gristle, a visual artist, pornographic model, solo musician and writer. Tutti, now 73, grew up in the English city of Hull, where she met like-minded performer Genesis P-Orridge. Together, they formed Throbbing Gristle and the collective COUM. Their activations and installations were, unequivocally, shocking. In one show, Tutti urinated on the audience as she swung naked across the stage. In another, the band performed alongside framed displays of her used menstrual pads. Throbbing Gristle's extreme experimentations flirted with the erotic and the grotesque, pushing the limits of sound and frequency. Their outsider approach to making music—and their erasure of the boundary that separates life and art—went on to influence a generation of creatives across genres, especially in early techno. After Throbbing Gristle disbanded, Tutti performed as synth pop duo Chris & Cosey with her husband and ex-band member, Chris Carter. Her work as a solo artist has blossomed in recent years. She published her memoir, Art Sex Music, in 2017. After turning 66, she also wrote two full-length albums and wrote another book, Re:Sisters, which explores the life and legacy of the late composer Delia Derbyshire who faced adversity as a woman in a male-dominated world, like Tutti herself. In this Exchange with with Chloe Lula, Tutti discusses her dedication to living alternatively, expressing herself by any means possible and her forthcoming album, 2t2, composed during a time of extreme difficulty in her personal life. The underground icon also talks about mastering Mongolian throat singing and her upcoming solo art exhibition in New York, which will display the pornographic photos she took as a model in her 20s. (It helps new listeners find the show.) Thank you. This is Renegade Files Episode 83, Chaos Magic. Chaos Magic is one of those unfortunate topics which, because of a poorly selected name, people tend to think they know what it is, without ever looking into it. Maybe that's a good thing from the perspective of a true Chaos Magician, but the more likely truth is that (1) the devotees probably don't care if someone understands it or not, and (2), there is no such thing as Truth in the first place so either of these scenarios is equally ineffectual in the world and there's really no one to care or not care, but this is not to say that the entire discipline is Nihilistic. A better term might be flexible, and before we start trying to understand this, we need to unravel a few things. First of all, the unfortunate name here: Chaos Magic. When people hear the word Chaos, they often think of melee, destruction, and wreckage. Officially, Chaos refers to a state of complete confusion or disorder, where there is no order or organization. It can also describe a confused mass or mixture of things. As for Chaos Magic, what we're concerned with is more of the absence of organization, formality, and tradition. But this doesn't mean the total void of performance. Quite the opposite. Chaos magic is, above all else, concerned with Results. One of its mantras is, If it works, it works. In the first section we'll cover some deeper definitions and origins of Chaos Magic. In part 2 we'll explore the tools of the trade. In part 3 we'll dive into Chaos Magic in Popular and fringe Culture. And that will lead us into some part 4, Pop Culture Events and Products that just may be forms of Chaos Magic being performed in plain sight. By the end we should know just enough about Chaos Magic to get us in trouble. So join me now for Renegade Files Episode 83… wherein together we will explore the strange, potentially life changing, and almost certainly treacherous world of Chaos Magic. Musician and researcher John Adams joins me to divulge new details in relation to his series with researcher Nino on the secret history of punk music. Arising from the psychedelic genre and the 60s counter-culture (so-called) movements, punk became an iconic sub-genre that would have a tremendous impact on "youth culture" through the 70s, 80s, 90s and into today. The real question, however, is whether there is a deeper occult agenda to punk music, as well as a social engineering aspect to this "scene." We explore these questions, as well as topics such as: Henry Rollins, Riot Girl, feminism, GG Allin, Iggy Pop, situationism, Fugazi, The Sex Pistols and "spectacle," performance art, deep state connections, Genesis P-Orridge and transgender agendas, the Stone Roses, Lou Reed and Blavatsky, The KLF and the rise of electronica, Discordianism, techno and rave culture, and the power of pop culture to mind control mass populations. Genesis P-Orridge was a performance artist, neo Pagan, Industrial music innovator, the co-founder of COUM, Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV and an arch provocateur. He was variously described as a wrecker of civilisation, transgressive and blasphemous, accused of being a Satanist and of sexually abusing his children (a lie - in fact he was a loving father and grandfather), and claimed to be a threat to society. He could be both very alarming and very kind. In later life Genesis became infamous with attempts to unite as a “pandrogyne”, a single entity, with partner Lady Jaye through the use of extreme surgical body modification intended to make them physically resemble one another Filmaker David Charles Rodrigues, director of S/HE IS STILL HERE an extraordinary, moving film based around interviews made in the last months of Genesis's life, came to the Bureau to talk about the Cut Up technique, William Burroughs, Bryon Gysin, The Exploding Galaxy, industrial music, the Satanic Panic and much more in the life and death of a deeply countercultural artist. #genesis p-orridge #throbbinggristle #coum #psychictv #thetempleofpsychicyouth #industrialmusic #templeofpsychicyouth #pandrogyne #coseyfannitutti #chrisandcosey #williamburroughs #bryongysin #cutup #thecutuptechnique #ica #censorship #transgressive #satanicpanic #ladyjaye #thexxplodinggalaxy

In this episode, Joe interviews Alyssa Gursky, LPC: artist, research associate and study therapist at the Social Neuroscience and Psychotherapy (SNaP) lab, and founder of Psychedelic Art Therapy LLC, which pioneers ketamine-assisted art therapy. She talks about her first mushroom experience and how her art and creative process instantly felt different – how the judgment and concern about where the art was going disappeared and was replaced by a freedom; a return to a more childlike way of being, where all that mattered was the fun of the creative process, and expressing her inner world in art. They realized how much the creative process related to true embodiment and the ability to be fully present, and how healing it can be to simply be with other people and create art. She talks about: The power of being seen in a group, and how the bravery of one person can completely shift the group dynamic The need for mentorship in the psychedelic space The comfort and freedom found in affinity groups The inspiring lives of Genesis P-Orridge and avant-garde filmmaker, Alejandro Jodorowsky Rick Rubin's ability to treat creativity as a spiritual act and how attending a live wrestling event aligns with non-ordinary states. Gursky is launching a virtual education and support group this March for anyone who wants to integrate art into client work or their own process. Visit her instagram for details. Our guest on Line Noise today is Richard Norris. a man who can claim to have made the UK's first acid house album, found worldwide chart fame with The Grid and was a creative partner for Joe Strummer, among many other things. His autobiography Strange Things Are Happening, is scheduled to be released on March 21, 2024. We talked about Swamp Thing, acid house, Genesis P-Orridge, Jack the Tab and more.
Genesis Breyer P-Orridge (born Neil Andrew Megson; 22 February 1950 – 14 March 2020) was an English singer-songwriter, musician, poet, performance artist, visual artist, and occultist who rose to notoriety as the founder of the COUM Transmissions artistic collective and lead vocalist of seminal industrial band Throbbing Gristle. They were also a founding member of Thee Temple ov Psychick Youth occult group, and fronted the experimental pop rock band Psychic TV. Genesis was my mentor in magick and life for over seven intensive years. This conversation was the last I had with her, while she was in hospital with leukemia before her death. I released it on the podcast shortly after recording it, but since it was recorded on an iPhone with no external mic, the audio was very hard to hear in parts. This remastered version restores the conversation and give it the proper treatment it deserves. Please enjoy this very, very special episode. Episode 114 Refined Noise Playlist Claus Böhmler, “Klangundkrach, Part 1” from Klangundkrach (1996) (2014 Slowscan). Recorded in Hamburg 1996. Edition of 270 copies. Böhmler was a German visual artist, video maker, and sometimes music artist. His website contains a great sampling of his visual work, texts, and writing about his work. There are not many clues as to how he made this recording except for a cover photo of several Walkman style cassette players with output cables attached. (12:46) David Cunningham, “Guitar Systemised” and “Water Systemised” from Grey Scale (1977 Piano). For tape recorder and guitar sounds or water sounds. These two works mimic a process used in some of his other compositions where, “The players play a repeating phrase. As soon as one player makes a mistake that mistake is made the basis of his repetition unless it is modified by a further mistake. Thus each player proceeds at his own rate to change the sound in an uncontrollable manner.” Except for in the case of these two works, the water piece and the guitar piece, the process is “analogous” to those works but “the process is automatic here, an inherent quality in the machinery used.” (03:10) and (04:06) Luke Fowler, “GOLD Side” from Fowl Tapes II (2013 Dekorder). Keyboards, Richard Youngs; Piano and synthesizer, Luke Fowler. Source material performed by Luke Fowler between 2009 and 2011. (17:43) Merzbow / Genesis P-Orridge, “Source Are Rare” from A Perfect Pain (1999 Cold Spring). Noise Electronics, BIAS Electric Drum Unit, TR606, Filters, Ring modulation, Masami Akita (Merzbow); vocals, producer, Genesis P-Orridge. Genesis P-Orridge: master DAT edited at The Armadillo Studio, Northampton, England, May 1998. Masami Akita: recorded & mixed at Bed Room, August 1998. (23:06) Emory Cook, “Untitled track 1” from Microfusion White Sound: Popular Combo (circa 1960 Cook). Emory Cook was known for making high fidelity location recordings and musical records from the mid-1950s to the1960s. He patented a special vinyl pressing technique called Microfusion to produce high quality records. When he wasn't releasing sound effects such as Mexican Firecrackers or location recordings of calypso music, steel bands or a Creole Christmas, Cook managed to slip a few strange experiments into his catalog. This record, number 40850, comes from a series of five albums he produced around 1960 that combined musical tracks from his other albums with a track of pure white noise. The music would play on the left, the white sound would play at the same time on the right. I have several of these discs plus a demo album that Cook produced. The tag line for the “White Sound Series” was “analgesic sound for control of tensions.” The cover stated boldly that the album was “The new analgesic white sound to help in control of Tension, Headaches, Insomnia, Appetite, Smoking. A natural relaxant.” You be the judge as you listen to a track of a popular “cocktail combo” (called a “popular combo” on the record label, combined with white sound. “Not to be played at more than ordinary room volume level.” (03:15) Narwhalz Of Sound / Mincemeat Or Tenspeed, “Untitled” (3 tracks, side 2) from Doonesbury Dropout, Frasier Freedom / A Rave New World (2010 Isle of Man). This is a test pressing of what I think is this album. Side 2 is by Mincemeat Or Tenspeed, an electronic musician from Rhode Island (currently). (14:15) Pod Blotz, “Giving,” “Future Romance From The Past,” “Crests And Reflections,” and “Black Glass Monolith” from Glass Tears (2013 Clan Destine Records). Music project of experimental artist and musician Suzy Poling. (18:05) Opening background music: Mika Vainio, “Lydspor (Part I)” from Lydspor One & Two (2018 Moog Recordings Library). Producer, curator, Paul Smith; Moog Technical Support, Recording Engineering, Finlay Shakespeare. Part of a limited series of Moog albums produced at Surrey University when they were home to a set of Moog Modular synthesizers and components, on arrangement with Moog Music USA. Mika Vainio was born in Helsinki, Finland and died in 2017 in France at aged 53. He was an electronic musician, composer, and producer. (19:26) Opening and closing sequences voiced by Anne Benkovitz. Additional opening, closing, and other incidental music by Thom Holmes. See my companion blog that I write for the Bob Moog Foundation. For additional notes, please see my blog, Noise and Notations.
Content warning: This episode contains discussion of sexual violence (22:45–24:55). In this episode we welcome the excellent Barbara Ellen, who joins us on Zoom all the way from... well, the other side of London, actually. (It's a long story.) Barbara talks us through her illustrious writing career from zines such as her own Wax Lyrical and Ooh Gary, Gary (a footie zine dedicated entirely to one G. Lineker, Esq.) via ZigZag (in its Goth phase) to the golden decade she spent in the pages and offices of the NME. Always highly amusing in print, our guest is no less hilarious in (virtual) person – especially when recalling her 1987 interview with Guns N' Roses. But Barbara is also capable of reverence and seriousness, not least when speaking of the revelatory interview Madonna granted her in 1995. It's back to belly-laughs when we turn our attention to news of the planned sequel to This is Spinal Tap. A clip from Gavin Martin's 2009 audio interview with Tap axeman Nigel Tufnel (a.k.a. the 4th Baron Haden-Guest) has us all in stitches as we debate the wisdom or otherwise of attempting Spinal Tap 2. Another audio clip – of the late Genesis P-Orridge explaining why Santa Claus was originally a shaman – is almost as funny. After Mark quotes from interviews with Janis Joplin, Neneh Cherry and Thom Yorke, Barney cites splendid conversations with Beatles boffin Mark Lewisohn and power-balladeering songsmith Diane Warren. Finally, Jasper concludes the episode with his thoughts on Sophie Ellis-Bextor, muzak and a Hip Hop anniversary. Many thanks to special guest Barbara Ellen. Pieces discussed: Guns N' Roses, The NME, Madonna, Goldberg on Spinal Tap, Staunton on Spinal Tap, Genesis P-Orridge audio, Essra Mohawk by Michael Watts, Essra Mohawk by Max Bell, Janis Joplin, Lester Bangs, Neneh Cherry, Thom Yorke, Mark Lewisohn on the Beatles, Dianne Warren, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Elevator Muzak and 40 years of Hip Hop.
For the last guest-episode of 2023, art critic Jarrett Earnest joins me to celebrate his beautiful new book, VALID UNTIL SUNSET (Matte Editions), which brings together his Polaroids and a second-person narrative to create a bewitching trip through memory, art, grief, friendship, and more. We talk about how the sudden death of his father paralyzed and then catalyzed him, the importance of making art before fully recovering from a bad experience, how the artist's job is to be a question mark, and how a Nan Goldin exhibition started him on taking pictures of the people and places that mattered to him. We get into his friendships with Genesis P-Orridge and Peter Schjeldahl, and Genesis' imprecation to do/make/be the Most Fabulous Imaginable Version, the importance of road trips and pilgrimages, what he learned from interviewing a series of art critics, the freedom & addictiveness of writing in the second person, why we need to make an argument about why any art matters at all today, and why he loves writing about artists he knows. Plus, we discuss the value of public-facing life in NYC, how it felt to perform selections from Valid Until Sunset, how he thinks of writing in terms of shape, the importance of having a really good analyst and really dumb personal trainer, why you don't need to be part of Barbenheimer, and a lot more. Sean Ragon has been active in industrial, and experimental music communities for over fifteen years, and in DIY punk in general going back to the 90s. He's primarily known as the frontman of neofolk collective Cult of Youth, which triumphantly returned from a long hiatus last year. Sean also makes electronic music as Venerence. He's deep in the culture, and his contributions over the years have been truly original and widely respected. Sean and I talk about runic yoga, Asatru, attempting to remain apolitical in polarized scenes, being married by Genesis P-Orridge , Cult of Youth's comeback album, “With Open Arms”, and why Sean had to flee America to Berlin. From providing homemade Manson shirts to John Balance and David Tibet to buzzing around the Psychic TV world to narrating Genesis P-Orridge's autobiography, Paul "Bee" Hampshire has been all around the world, heavily within the UK industrial scene. Bee tells us his life story, which includes briefly being a pop star in Japan as well as working at an early 80s fetish club, and gives a cool different history of the strange world of the 80s and 90s.

An exploration of how magic can be found within all human activities• Offers a “magical-anthropological” tour from ancient Norse shamanism to the modern magick of occultists like Genesis P-Orridge• Looks at how human beings are naturally attracted to magic and how this attraction can be corrupted by both religious organizations and occult societies• Examines magic as it relates to psychedelics, Witchcraft, shamanism, pilgrimage, Jungian individuation, mortality, and the literary works of Beat icons like Burroughs and GysinSince the dawn of time, magic has been the node around which all human activities and culture revolve. As magic entered the development of science, art, philosophy, religion, myth, and psychology, it still retained its essence: that we have a dynamic connection with all other forms of life.Exploring the source magic that flows beneath the surface of culture and occulture throughout the ages, Carl Abrahamsson offers a “magical-anthropological” journey from ancient Norse shamanism to the modern magick of occultists like Genesis P-Orridge. He looks at how human beings relate to and are naturally attracted to magic. He examines in depth the consequences of magical practice and how the attraction to magic can be corrupted by both religious organizations and occult societies. He shows how the positive effects of magic are instinctively grasped by children, who view the world as magical. The author looks at magic and occulture as they relate to psychedelics, Witchcraft, shamanism, Thee Temple of Psychick Youth (TOPY), the panic rituals of the Master Musicians of Joujouka in Morocco, psychological individuation processes, literary “magical realism,” and the cut-up technique of Beat icons like William S. Burroughs and Brion Gysin. He explores the similarities in psychology between poet Ezra Pound and magician Austin Osman Spare. He looks at the Scandinavian Fenris Wolf as a mythic force and how personal pilgrimages can greatly enrich our lives. He also examines the philosophy of German author Ernst Jünger, the magical techniques of British filmmaker Derek Jarman, and the quintessential importance of accepting our own mortality.Sharing his more than 30 years of experiences in the fields of occulture and magical anthropology, Carl Abrahamsson explores ancient and modern magical history to reveal the source magic that connects us all, past and present.Carl Abrahamsson is a writer, publisher, magico-anthropologist, and filmmaker. The author of Occulture, Reasonances, and Anton LaVey and the Church of Satan as well as the editor and publisher of the irregular anthology of occulture, The Fenris Wolf, he lives in Småland, Sweden.

Carl Abrahamsson is a writer, editor, photographer and tireless curator of global Occulture. (Source Magic, his latest book, is a series of essays that aims straight for the heart of the modern occultural movement, and proposes a new universal theory of magic to boot.) We sat down to talk about our mutual friend and mentor Genesis P-Orridge, now three years after her passing—and had an excellent, emotional and insightful conversation. Enjoy it! Whether as a touring guitarist for the avant-garde rockers, Psychic TV, or producer for artists like Boy George, Lenny Kaye, and Pharoahe Monch, Jeff Berner makes a safe, creative space for those around him to make great art. This week, we trace Jeff's life from first falling for “Sunshine of Your Love,” to building his studio career, performing in Russia with punk legend Genesis P-Orridge – and producing, performing on and brilliantly wedging an electric bouzouki into my new album, Constellations.
Bass player David J was a founding member of the influential post-punk band Bauhaus in 1978. He wrote the lyrics for many Bauhaus songs, including the single, Bela Lugosi's Dead. He sang lead on Who Killed Mr. Moonlight?. In 1985, David, his brother Kevin, and Daniel Ash, all former members of Bauhaus, formed Love and Rockets, which had a hit single with the song So alive. In 2014 David wrote an autobiography, Who Killed Mister Moonlight. In the book he explores his work in bands as well as a solo performer. He also delves deep into his exploration of the occult, drawing together a diverse cast of supporting characters, including William S. Burroughs, Alan Moore, Genesis P. Orridge, and Rick Rubin. **Technical Note*** As many of you know the Lydian Spin gang has been away from home. As a result, recording has been happening on unreliable setups. Unfortunately the audio for the intro this week was corrupted and not useable. Intros will continue as expected next week.

This episode I talk with Alice Genese & Shaune Pony Heath; two friends who would meet on Tuesdays to talk and informally play some music in their living rooms. Those meetings eventually became the band OV Stars. Alice talks to me about how she grew up a block from the legendary venue, Maxwell's, in Hoboken, NJ. She began her music career playing bass with Gut Bank and Sexpod. She eventually met up with Genesis P-Orridge and played bass for Psychic TV for the last 20 years. Shaune discusses growing up in Pretoria, South Africa and how the music scene was the ultimate in DIY, sometimes meaning you had to build your own stage from tires and soil, Alice and Shaune had written so much music together that recording was the obvious next step. Shaune tells me about being terrified but how being immediately thrown in the deep end didn't give him time to overthink the process. So go check out the OV Stars EP, Tuesdays, on Bandcamp. Follow them on all the socials. And if you happen to be in Asbury Park, NJ, stop by The Stone Pony and get one of Alice's Jell-O shots!
