While between projects in late 2007 and early 2008, Marcus Westbury, a maker, festival director and writer, was exploring his hometown of Newcastle, Australia, and found dozens of buildings and once-vibrant streets that 'had fallen into disrepair and despair.' Today, however, Lonely Planet describes Newcastle as a city whose 'time has finally come.' Marcus' new book, 'Creating Cities,' tells the story of how Newcastle transformed.

In this week’s podcast we look at Marcus Westbury’s latest TV documentary series Bespoke, as he also launches his debut nonfiction book Creating Cities. Then we dip into the weird reality TV world of Australia’s brawny version of The Bachelor. And finally, we build our own burgers, as one of our biggest fast food chain rebrands as UnMcDonalds.

Marcus Westbury successfully led a pioneering project to bring derelict buildings back into use in Newcastle, Australia’s City of Steel. His scheme turned the area into one of Lonely Planet’s top ten tourist destinations in the country. His Renew Newcastle scheme, which has since been replicated in cities around the world, sees landlords offer boarded-up business units to a range of creative tenants free of charge – filling empty shops at the same time as showcasing their potential.
