Sacred Window Podcast: Nurturing Awareness in Postpartum Care
This episode discusses the importance of sustainability for both postpartum doulas and new parents. Guest Joanne McIntosh shares her journey providing postpartum support in Australia and the healing she has experienced through this work. Joanne reflects on experiences with traumatic birth and lack of support for her own mother that inspired her career. Through bodywork, she helps clients integrate memories and feelings from their perinatal experiences to promote healing. Postpartum is a sensitive time when changes can happen naturally with guidance. To feel nourished in her caregiver role, Joanne prioritizes self-care like nature time and rituals. She also built a supportive network including a birth doula partner. They provide continuity of care from pregnancy to postpartum and debrief together to avoid burnout. Living rurally, Joanne sees the value for new families in community support like women's circles. Christine emphasizes the joy in collaboration versus shouldering responsibility alone. Simple acts of self-care like tea time uplift caregivers' ability to give. Learn more about Joanne: Hi, my name is Joanne and I am a mum to two amazing humans, Amberlily 11yrs and Cian 9yrs and wife to my wonderful husband Bill. We live in Newcastle Australia, close to the ocean and nature which are my two favourite places to be! I am a Postpartum Doula and Massage Therapist and I love supporting women in their journey through the sacred window of postpartum. My passion in life is to “bring the sacred into the everyday” as I have always been interested in spirituality and mysticism. When I look back over my life journey I see the many threads that have led me here and understand now how they have woven together to create the tapestry of my work and life today. Spirituality, different cultures, healing, nature, animals and babies. My studies have been focused on Energetic Medicine, Anthroposophical Nursing and Education, Yoga, Reiki and Bach Flower essences and now Ayurveda is opening up new ways of thinking to add to my repertoire. I honour stillness and reverence, holding space for others, nurturing through food and touch, healing through bodywork, yoga and breathwork and guiding families to find their individual rhythm. Adam Miller is back with a fantastic new record and we hear all about it on the Guitar Speak Podcast! In Adam's words "Beyond Reason is a Guitarist / Songwriter album, if there was such a genre! I began to take note, that most of my guitar playing time was spent writing and creating, rather than practising. This led to me writing multiple albums worth of material the past few years whilst off the road for a while.” The 8 song album contains elements of blues, jazz, funk, rock, folk, and country and features Miller on electric, archtop, acoustic, resonator, and nylon string guitar. The bass & drums were recorded in Los Angeles by Miller's now long time collaborators, drummer / engineer / producer Justin Glasco, and bass player Joel Gottschalk. In the first episode of Your Place or Mine, comedian and writer Sarah Kendall joins Shaun Keaveny to try and convince him to go on a trip to her hometown, the coal-mining city of Newcastle, Australia. The cafe culture and oceanside bathing pools sound tempting - but will Shaun actually commit to the day-long flight? Your Place Or Mine is the travel podcast that isn't going anywhere - not until guests can convince Shaun Keaveny it's worth getting off the sofa for. Each week a familiar face will try to persuade Shaun and resident geographer, historian and comedian Iszi Lawrence that jetting off to their favourite destination is worth the hassle. Across the series listeners will be able to figuratively globe-trot to a new destination, as guests share a personal guide to their favourite place on the planet. Iszi will be on hand to check out the facts during the podcast's metaphorical tour of its visitors' much-loved locations. With all the missed travel these past two years, Your Place Or Mine will explore whether getting back on a plane is too much for our wallets and limited carbon budgets, or if seeing the world and experiencing global cultures is something we can't afford to miss. Your Place or Mine is a BBC Audio production for BBC Radio 4 and BBC Sounds. Producers: Proinsias O'Coinn and Jen Whyntie
I have a wonderful wife and three kids. I love stories. I love surfing. I am a long-time volunteer who contributes to the community. I absolutely love life and live it to the fullest. But it wasn't always this way. For over fifteen years I was in the grip of lust and porn addiction, never knowing real happiness as I spent my time taking from life rather than giving.
Alan's next sailing adventure was to sail around the world alone in the BOC Challenge, a single-handed yacht race. 27000 nautical miles of sailing in 4 stages Alan started the race in September 1994. Alan and 19 others sailed out of Charleston Harbour, in South Carolina USA and after 181 days at sea, Alan arrived back to see the lights of Charleston again after an epic voyage. Many times not knowing if he could but knowing inside that he would. The complete story of the voyage is laid out in his book “Against All Odds”. Alan raised the funds from multiple contributors and community support. Alan started building his Yacht, “Newcastle Australia” with a huge step of faith and belief this would happen. Through many trials and tribulations, he built it. He sailed to the start line in South Carolina halfway around the world to begin his solo BOC Challenge Race arriving 1 ½ hour before the cut-off time. So I guess you could say he has sailed 1 and a half times around the world that year. Alan didn't win the race, he placed 4th, but won the hearts and respect of all who sailed with him in the race. Alan won two medals for seamanship. The first for saving the life of a fellow competitor and the second for sailing jury-rigged around Cape Horn. Alan's alternator died, his computer failed, he could not receive weather reports or fleet updates for several weeks, had to deal with 50-foot plus waves, cyclonic winds, snow, hail, being dismasted, losing a rudder, seas that rolled the boat over and over, surviving the doldrums and missing his wife and family for nine months of racing during preparation for the race and during the race. I invited Alan into this podcast series because of all the people I know, Alan depicts someone for me who decided to plan a life he wants to live in. He is the most determined person I have ever met. I enjoyed Part 2 of the discussion with Alan just as much as the first, I hope you enjoy as well.

Effects of Curcumin Supplementation on Inflammatory Markers, Muscle Damage, and Sports Performance during Acute Physical Exercise in Sedentary Individuals Universidade Federal de Viçosa (Brazil), December 14, 2021 Exhaustive and acute unusual physical exercise leads to muscle damage. Curcumin has been widely studied due to the variety of its biological activities, attributed to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Furthermore, it has shown positive effects on physical exercise practitioners. However, there is no literature consensus on the beneficial effects of curcumin in acute physical activities performed by sedentary individuals. Therefore, we systematically reviewed evidence from clinical trials on the main effects of curcumin supplementation on inflammatory markers, sports performance, and muscle damage during acute physical exercises in these individuals. Most studies have shown positive effects of curcumin supplementation in sedentary individuals undergoing acute physical exercise. Overall, participants supplemented with curcumin showed less muscle damage, reduced inflammation, and better muscle performance. (NEXT) Long Term Study Alludes to Artificial Sweeteners and Cognitive Decline Link University of Barcelona, December 10. 2021 Diet is considered an important modulator of cognitive decline and dementia, but the available evidence is, however, still fragmented and often inconsistent. Methods and Results In conclusion, our prospective and validated data suggest that food-related and microbiota-derived metabolites may play an important role in the later development of CD. Our results support a protective association between metabolites reflecting the consumption of polyphenol-rich foods (i.e., fruits and vegetables), cocoa, coffee, mushrooms and red wine with CD, whereas other food components related to unhealthy dietary components (i.e., alcohol, artificial sweeteners) may have deleterious effects on cognition. (NEXT) Key role in brain health for vitamin E University of Newcastle (Australia), December 18, 2021 Vitamin E has a key role to play in reducing the onset of Alzheimer's disease, fatty liver diseases and other health risks, experts at a recent symposium on vitamin E have said. Eggersdorfersaid that more than 90% of the US's population did not meet their recommended daily allowance of vitamin E, which was a worry. Consumers were expected to take in enough vitamin E through their diets, but “they are characterised by an increasing intake of processed foods”, said Lisa Wood, associate professor at the Centre for Asthma and Respiratory Diseases at Australia's University of Newcastle. (NEXT) Childhood obesity linked with mother's unhealthy diet before pregnancy University of Southampton, December 22, 2021 New research led by the University of Southampton shows supporting women to eat a healthy diet pre-pregnancy could reduce risk of obesity for their children. New research, at the University of Southampton, has found children aged eight or nine were more likely to be obese if their mother had a poor diet during—and before—pregnancy. The research identifies these as critical times, when initiatives to reduce childhood obesity may be more effective. The results, published in the International Journal of Obesity, showed that if a mother-child pair was in a lower diet quality group, this was associated with child having a higher DXA percentage body fat and BMI at age eight or nine. This research shows the importance of intervening at the earliest possible stage in a child's life, in pregnancy or even before conception, to enable us to tackle it." (NEXT) Can Oily Fish, Cherries Or Milk Help You Sleep? Here's What The Evidence Shows Aston University (UK), December 20, 2021 Almost one-in-five British people report they don't get enough sleep each night. The problem is so bad that in total the UK public are losing around a night's worth of shut-eye each week. Our diet has an influence upon sleep patterns by affecting the sleep hormone melatonin. For example, foods rich in the essential amino acid tryptophan are commonly cited as helping sleep, as tryptophan helps produce melatonin. Additionally, some vitamins and minerals may help sleep, such as vitamin D, magnesium and zinc. Oily fish: Evidence suggests the more oily fish, such as salmon or herring, you eat the better you sleep. Oily fish contain healthy fats such as omega-3 oils which have been shown to improve sleep in children and are involved in serotonin release. Tart cherries: Evidence suggests that tart cherries improves sleep in older adults, probably due to their ability to increase melatonin levels. And tart cherries are also rich in nutrients, including magnesium, which also may improve your sleep. Warm milk: Research conducted in the 1970s suggested that a glass of warm milk before bed could improve sleep quality. This research was performed in a very small group however, and little research has been done since. Drinking milk does increase melatonin levels which could help. But there isn't enough evidence to support the claim that a glass of warm milk definitely makes you nod off. Herbal teas: Evidence for valerian, a common ingredient, to aid sleep is inconclusive. Decaffeinated green tea has been reported to improve sleep quality, which might be linked to the relaxing qualities of L-theanine, an amino acid it contains (NEXT) War metaphors for cancer hurt certain prevention behaviors University of Michigan, December 15, 2021 It's not unusual for people to use war metaphors such as "fight" and "battle" when trying to motivate patients with cancer. But a new University of Michigan study indicates that using those words can have an unintended negative effect. David Hauser, a U-M doctoral student in psychology, and colleague Norbert Schwarz of the University of Southern California, found in three studies that exposure to metaphoric language relating cancer to an enemy significantly lessens the extent to which people consider cancer-prevention behaviors.
Future of Assessment: what innovations can we expect to see?Hosted by Gavin O'Meara and Dean Blewitt (Learning Innovation Manager, NCFE), we invited Peter Twining (University of Newcastle – Australia) to discuss what assessment innovation means in practice and what the future holds, as we find new ways of working that meets the changing needs of learners and educators across the globe today. NCFE is focused on exploring the future of assessment to ensure that learners have access to the world-class products and services that help them to fulfil their potential, not just in terms of academic attainment or employment outcomes, but also their wellbeing, mental health and happiness. So, what are the key ingredients that are required to create a system that is truly transformational? To support with this, NCFE recently launched £1 million worth of funding to support centres, employers, awarding organisations and other stakeholders in piloting new and innovative approaches to assessment. Phase one of this Innovation Fund is now complete and this show shines a spotlight on some of the fantastic new and interesting ideas that came out of this, and how we will pilot these new approaches to test their validity. From virtual reality to digital badges, what innovations can we expect to see as learning expands far beyond the classroom?

Roger (00:01):In the earliest days, living in the UK, I remember reading a newspaper, the headlines about crew member, detained by police, preflight failing a breath test. And I remember reading those things 30 years ago and thinking well, silly him. That wouldn't happen to me and generally being quite unconcerned about it. But the fact was, I'd still read the same sort of headlines periodically. And by the mid two thousands, they would have a different effect on me. I would read those headlines and go, wow, that could be me. That could be me one day. ,addiction is giving up everything for one thing and recovery is giving up one thing for everything because The end point of addiction is people lose a lot. They lose lives and careers and, and, and marriages and relationships and everything. It is just total annihilation for this one thing,New Speaker (00:57):You all listening to flying straight and aviators guide to navigating through a life of sobriety people in the flying industry and other walks of life will share their experiences of living a life free of alcohol and other drugs. You will also hear from experts in the world of addiction and self-improvement join Andrew O'Meally, airline, pilot, and non-practicing alcoholic. As he takes you on a journey discovering how a sober life can lead to a deeper level of happiness.Andrew (01:32):Well, welcome to this third episode of flying straight piloting a sober life. My name is Andrew O'Meally, airline pilot alcoholic, and your host. I'm talking to you from the sunshine coast in Southeast Queensland Australia. It's beautiful here at the moment, balmy days and rain in the afternoons. It's a great combo of fantastic beach weather and the rain keeping that Bush land alive.New Speaker (02:00):Anyway, today's conversation is with a super interesting guy, Captain Roger Healey Roger's career path is an enviable one. Soon after school, he joined the Royal Australian air force, flying a diverse range of aircraft, including P three Orions, which is a four engine Anti submarine aircraft, as well as rotary wings. He left the military after 16 years and started flying for a large airline being based in Hong Kong, as well as in the United Kingdom. He currently operates out of Asia flying freight a heavy jet. How good is that? Roger shares with us, his story of the impact alcohol had on his life. It was a slow transition from social drinker fitting in with the other crew members to that realization that something just wasn't quite right and was getting worse. He shares insights on the life as an international airline pilot and expectorate, a father and a recovering alcoholic. And he tells us how sobriety has given him everything alcohol had promised.New Speaker (03:09):Oh yeah. Thanks for doing this mate. This is excellent.Roger (03:12):Mate, this is yeah. Pleasure.Andrew (03:14):Yeah. So your down inthe central coast at the moment, is that right?Roger (03:20):Newcastle. Yeah. So Newcastle. So just South of Newcastle I'm in CharlestownAndrew (03:26):Charlestown. Okay. And just to clarify that's Newcastle Australia. Yeah.Roger (03:33):Newcastle Australia. Yeah. Certainly is.Andrew (03:35):And, that's a pretty rare event for you, isn't it? That being back in Australia,Roger (03:41):Being home hasn't happened, for nearly 12 months, you know, the 11 months, when I was last back, just the way the COVID thing's been rolling and the various, quarantine restrictions, both in Asia and back here.Andrew (03:57):Yeah. It must be good to be home.Roger (04:00):It is, it is. , although as generally a commuter for the last 10 or more years, my need to keep coming back is a bit different from some other folks. My kids are now pretty much grown up they're 20, 24 and 28. So, they're, to a greater extent self-sufficient and they're also geographically dispersed so that if I come back to Newcastle, they're not all here.Andrew (04:26):So, so did your kids spend any time in Hong Kong? We, you were always up there on your own?Roger (04:33):No. So I was married and we split back in 2002, the time that happened, we were all living in the UK. IWas UK based for a while.Andrew (04:47):You spent, a lot of time in Asia. As an expat.Roger (04:53):So, I've been with the company for 23 years. And so, for the period that I was based, which was the first 13 years or so, , my visits, there were a couple of times a month and you'd, just be in a hotel there when you were there,, for a couple of days and then, and then flying out again, back and forth, usually through the middle East, back to all ports in Europe, since I've been based there though, I've got my own little, own little apartment I rent up there and we jet about all over the place, some regional, some long haul.Andrew (05:30):Yeah, so you're, you're flying the 744freighter at the momentRoger (05:36):The mighty freighter, the mighty 74. Yeah.Andrew (05:38):That'd be a pretty cool job at the moment. And particularly with, all the freight booming and so on.Roger (05:46):Yeah. it's the, it's the part of the industry, I think, with the brightest prospects at the moment.Andrew (05:54):All right. Great. S0, I remember you saying once this flying rubber dog shit out of Hong Kong, it's notsuch a bad gig after allRoger (06:02):that's right, is that famous line out of, out of that movie, isn't it, but top gun, top gun it was, seen as athreat to those guys findflying the pointy jets.Andrew (06:16):you mentioned the, pointy.....?Roger (06:18):those pointy jets. Yeah. The, top gun guys.Andrew (06:23):Yeah, What were you flying?.Roger (06:26):Well, I wasn't, no, I was, in the air force for 16 years, but, most of it was, multi-engine on the P-3 doing maritime patrol stuff and a bit of rotary wing for years on helicopters. That was all good fun, but a bit of a young man's game really, but all good fun.Andrew (06:42):How long were you in there for?Roger (06:44):16 years? Yeah. 16 years. 82 to 98.Andrew (06:50):Yeah. Right. Yeah. I've got to ask with the air force. So it was the Royal Australian Air ForceRoger (06:58):Indeed. It was. Yeah.Andrew (07:00):How would you say the drinking culture was there?Roger (07:04):Ah, look, it's a long time ago now becaus, we're talking nearly 40 years ago that I joined and, I think the culture, and society, generally was very different back then. And the air force, was not particularly different. It was different that's for sure things were just more, more permissive. There was that sort of work, hard, play hard sort of culture. There was always the idea of flight safety coming first and, mixing the drinking with the was always very heavily promoted. But I think there were a lot of times where people would, as an example,Friday afternoons, it'd be off to the mess for a bit of socialization after, after a working week. And yeah, some people would just go for a couple of drinks and head off home and other people would stay for a bit longer. I was probably one of the ones that stayed a bit longer and, I was the one who came home late for dinner on a Friday night, was not very popular. And, there are a lot of those sorts of things. And as I say, these are the things that happened, 40 odd years ago.Andrew (08:17):Yeah. Right. So, so did you go straight from the RAAF into an airline?Roger (08:23):I did. I did so, straight from school to the air fo...

We look at the history of the ‘munchee', the realms in which it is now being used and the effectiveness across a broad spectrum of care applications. Betterhelp: www.betterhelp.com/allmadhere Today I speak to the person who inspired me to start this podcast, and who experiences arguably one of the most misunderstood conditions in psychological literature. Amber is a trans-female data analyst living in Newcastle Australia who has dissociative identity disorder, or what is popularly known as 'multiple personality disorder'. She has been a 'multiple' for most of her adult life, and has been working deeply to understand and accept her identities. She describes her experience as being 'like living in a share-house. I don't have any control over what anyone else does, I can only make sure that everyone is happy'. She describes how having multiple identities impacts her romantic relationships, and how having a 'team' of identities on hand is a bit like having a superpower. Coppas and ambos came, blood everywhere. Took me to the A&E, it was chockablock. Non-bogan / English: Oh no. I was in a car accident, when I was on my way to the liquor establishment. I was performing a U-turn. The police and the paramedics arrived, there was blood all around. I was taken to the ER and it was full. Australian: G'day ya bastards! Howaaaare youse, awrite? Out in the whoop whoop, if trauma strikes, you're in the sticks kilometers away from bugger all. With a massive injury, you'd be stuffed if you used outdated technology like the MAST snake. Its pretty flaky mate and is all cracking the shits. Non-bogan / English: Hello friends. How are you? Good? In the Outback, if trauma strikes, you're in the remote countryside, quite isolated. With massive trauma, you'd be in trouble if you used outdated technology like the MAST (military anti shock trouser) snake. It's pretty unreliable and quite frustrating. It's got a swish design, unlike other devices that have heads like a dropped pie and frankly, I reckon they've got a few ‘roos loose in the top paddock. But with ReBOA, she'll be right mate. Non-bogan / English: But thanks to your friends at Witness Protection Products Australia, we have a better way. ReBOA. Resuscitative Extravascular BOA constrictor. It's great. It's got a nice design, unlike other unattractive devices that I don't consider sensible. But with ReBOA, it's going to be fine. Australian: When you're flat out like a lizard drinking and need to make sure patients, who are like dog's breakfast, get a fair suck of the sauce bottle, you don't want to carry on like a pork chop. ReBOA is an absolute piece of piss. Just take the snake and apply right above the budgie smugglers and let nature do her work. No complications. Just continuous, unremitting abdominal pressure. Is that good or what? Bloody oath!! And its a fair dinkum mate. Non-bogan / English: When you're very busy and need to make good decisions for patients that are a mess, you don't want to be dramatic. The ReBOA is super easy. Just take the snake and apply right above the undies and let nature do her work. No complications. Just continuous, unremitting abdominal pressure. Is that good? The answer is an enthusiastic yes. Honestly. Australian: In Straya, everything's out to kill ya, so get the toughest gear around. Don't be a drongo. REBOA - it's Aussie for resuscitation. Non-bogan / English: In Australia, everything's deadly, so get the best tool for the job. Don't be a fool. ReBOA - it's Australian for resuscitation.
