Bob Moats and Mike Wiemuth continue their conversation with IU historian Bill Murphy, shifting from football glory to basketball history. This installment dives deep into the Branch McCracken era, revealing why Bill's favorite IU coach isn't who most fans would expect.Branch McCracken: The SheriffBill makes his case for Branch McCracken over Bob Knight, drawing fascinating parallels between the two legendary coaches. Branch coached 24 years (1938-1965, minus three years serving in WWII), finishing first or second in the Big Ten in 12 of those seasons with two national titles. Knight coached 29 years, finishing first or second in 16 seasons with three titles. Bill argues that had NCAA tournament rules been different, Branch might have won in 1960 when IU beat Ohio State by 16 in Bloomington after their last 12-game win streak, while Knight's 1987 title came when IU tied for the Big Ten title with three other teams. Bill recounts meeting Branch as an eighth grader in New Albany, a handshake he didn't want to wash for a week, and describes a six-foot-four presence who earned nicknames like "The Sheriff" and "The Bear" while drinking coffee at every shop on the Bloomington square to keep tabs on his players. The Van Arsdale Twins' Supernatural SymmetryThe conversation turns to Tom and Dick Van Arsdale, whose three-year careers produced jaw-dropping statistical similarities:Separated by just 12 points over 72 games (1,252 to 1,240)Only 10 rebounds apart (729 to 719)Both hit exactly 15 field goals in their career-high game against Notre DameConstantly pranked Branch by wearing mismatched socks after he tried to distinguish them by colorOfficials sometimes let the wrong twin shoot free throws because they couldn't tell them apartMike shares stories from his father, who lived in the SAE house with the twins and John McGlocklin—three of IU's seven all-time NBA All-Stars living in the same room.Chesty Chips and Television HistoryBill reveals how IU became the first university to televise basketball games in 1950 when radio announcer Paul Lennon convinced a Terre Haute potato chip company to sponsor games for $1,500 each. After one broadcast, Chesty Potato Chips went from one shift to three and sold out across the region, causing the price to jump to $5,000 per game the next year.Branch's BoysBill shares his favorite McCracken moments—from officials threatening a technical for every step back to the bench (so players carried him), to another ref getting him to sit down by saying "your fly is open," to Branch's simple philosophy: if he could only win one game all year, it would be against Purdue. That hatred paid off in 1940 when IU swept Purdue but finished second in the Big Ten, yet still received the NCAA tournament invitation over the conference champs. This episode brought to you by the Back Home Network and Homefield Apparel.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Worship with us 9 + 11am 390 N 400 E Bountiful, UT 84010 https://flourishinggrace.org/plan-you... In this reflective sermon from Flourishing Grace Church, Pastor Benjer walks through Ecclesiastes 3:1–15 and invites the church into a rare and needed pause at the turn of the year. As one season closes and another begins, this message speaks to the universal experience of looking back on what has been and looking forward to what is unknown. Grounded in the famous words that there is a time for everything under heaven, this teaching offers a thoughtful and pastoral framework for engaging the joys, sorrows, and hopes of the year behind us and the year ahead. Pastor Benjer explores the often misunderstood phrase that God has made everything beautiful in its time. Rather than suggesting that every event is pleasant or easy, this sermon explains how the biblical meaning of beautiful also carries the sense of fitting or purposeful within God's larger story. For those who feel skeptical or wounded by painful experiences, this message creates space for honesty while affirming God's sovereignty, goodness, and mercy. It acknowledges that some moments feel deeply unbeautiful while still trusting that God is at work beyond what we can see. The sermon moves through three intentional movements that shape how believers are invited to process the year. First, it calls listeners to look back in praise, not by pretending circumstances were easy, but by making God's goodness and character known regardless of how the year felt. Drawing from the Psalms, Pastor Benjer reminds the church that praise is not denial but remembrance, and that worship helps reorient hearts toward who God is and how He works. Even when personal strength is lacking, the gathered church carries one another through shared praise. Second, the message invites the congregation to look back in mourning. In a culture that avoids grief and distraction, this sermon affirms that Scripture commands God's people to mourn, weep, and bring sorrow honestly before Him. Referencing Ecclesiastes, the Psalms, and Jesus' words in Matthew, Pastor Benjer emphasizes that mourning is not weakness but faith. Vulnerability with God deepens intimacy with God, and lament becomes a pathway to comfort rather than something to avoid. This portion of the sermon speaks directly to those carrying loss, disappointment, and unresolved pain from the year. Finally, the message turns toward looking forward in hope. Acknowledging the fear and uncertainty that come with an unknown future, Pastor Benjer anchors hope not in circumstances improving but in the unchanging nature of God. Ecclesiastes reminds us that whatever God does endures forever, and that truth both humbles and stabilizes us. While humans long to control outcomes, this sermon gently redirects that desire toward trust, prayer, and persistence. God is already in the future, and because He is already there, believers are invited to pray boldly, hope deeply, and refuse to give up. This sermon culminates in a moment of quiet reflection and prayer, offering space for worshipers to name gratitude, grief, and longing before God. It is a message for anyone standing between seasons, carrying both thankfulness and ache, and wondering what comes next. With pastoral warmth and theological depth, this teaching reminds us that our hope is anchored not in what we can predict, but in the God who holds time itself.
Worship with us 9 + 11am 390 N 400 E Bountiful, UT 84010 https://flourishinggrace.org/plan-your-visit Celebrate Christmas with a powerful and hope filled message centered on John 1:14 and the heart of the gospel. In this Christmas sermon from Flourishing Grace Church, Pastor Benjer walks through one of the most profound truths in Scripture: the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth. This message invites you to slow down in the middle of the holiday rush and reflect on what it truly means that God came near, not from a distance, but by stepping fully into our humanity. Using a personal story about a father rushing to the scene of his child's car accident, this sermon paints a vivid picture of the incarnation. Just as a loving parent grabs the keys and runs toward their child in crisis, Jesus came running toward us. He did not stay far off or offer advice from a distance. He entered our brokenness, our fear, our grief, and our pain. This Christmas message reminds us that the incarnation is not abstract theology but deeply personal good news. Pastor Benjer unpacks why John calls Jesus the Word, connecting the opening of John's Gospel to Genesis and showing that Jesus is not merely a teacher or moral example but the eternal Creator God through whom all things were made. Life itself is found in Him, and the light He brings cannot be overcome by darkness. Whether this past year felt full of joy or heavy with sorrow, this sermon speaks to the universal longing for life, meaning, and hope. The message also explores what it means that the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. Jesus did not do a flyover of humanity. He pitched His tent among us. He experienced hunger, weakness, temptation, rejection, sorrow, and grief. Drawing from Hebrews and Isaiah, this sermon highlights Jesus as a Savior who sympathizes with our weaknesses and is acquainted with grief, offering comfort to those carrying pain this Christmas season. Finally, the sermon centers on Jesus being full of grace and truth. Grace that is undeserved and freely given, and truth that names our brokenness honestly while still offering rescue. This is not a harsh God lacking compassion, nor a permissive God without direction, but a Savior who holds both perfectly. The invitation of Christmas is simple and beautiful: receive and trust. To all who receive Him and believe in His name, He gives the right to become children of God. Whether you are a lifelong follower of Jesus, someone who feels weary and in need of rest, or someone exploring faith for the first time, this Christmas message invites you to see the beauty of a God who came near. God is here. He grabbed the keys. He came to rescue.
In this episode, we sit down with Dr. Amina Knight for an honest and necessary conversation about racism within the Muslim community. We explore how racial bias and colorism show up in our masājid, families, institutions, and online spaces — often quietly, sometimes painfully. Dr. Knight helps us unpack why these patterns persist, how they harm individuals and fracture the idea of ummah, and what accountability, healing, and allyship can look like moving forward. Top Stories for December 25th Publish Date: December 25th PRE-ROLL: SUGAR HILL ICE SKATING From the BG AD Group Studio Welcome to the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Today is Thursday, December 25th and Happy birthday to Jimmy Buffett I’m Peyton Spurlock and here are your top stories presented by KIA Mall of Georgia. Duluth named Georgia's most Hallmark movie-like city Solicitor's Office donates 5K proceeds to help domestic violence victims Salleigh Grubbs appointed to State Election Board Plus, Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on holiday foods All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: GCPS Hiring STORY 1: Duluth named Georgia's most Hallmark movie-like city If you’re dreaming of a Hallmark-style Christmas, Gwinnett County’s got you covered—no need to pack your bags. According to The Action Network, three Gwinnett cities made Georgia’s top five most Hallmark-like towns, with Duluth taking the crown as number one. Why Duluth? Think walkable streets, a buzzing town green, and a community that actually shows up—for festivals, concerts, and all the holiday feels. “It’s less about historic landmarks and more about people-driven traditions,” they said. Lawrenceville and Suwanee also made the list, proving Gwinnett’s got that small-town magic—minus the guaranteed snow or last-minute romantic plot twists. STORY 2: Solicitor's Office donates 5K proceeds to help domestic violence victims Three local groups that support domestic violence survivors got a little holiday cheer last week, courtesy of the Gwinnett County Solicitor’s Office. Solicitor General LisaMarie Bristol handed out checks to Mosaic Georgia, the Partnership Against Domestic Violence, and Ahimsa House during a ceremony at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center. The $12,080 came from the office’s third annual Dash 4 Domestic Violence 5K. “This is about more than money—it’s about action,” the office said. The event drew 170 runners, 65 volunteers, and 33 sponsors, raising over $12K to help survivors and their families across Gwinnett. STORY 3: Salleigh Grubbs appointed to State Election Board Former Cobb GOP Chair Salleigh Grubbs has been tapped for the State Election Board, the Georgia Republican Party announced Monday. Lt. Gov. Burt Jones made the appointment, filling the seat left vacant by Rick Jeffares. Grubbs called it a “recess appointment” and said she’s ready to get to work immediately. “Salleigh’s leadership and commitment to election integrity are unmatched,” said Georgia GOP Chair Josh McKoon. A Marietta native, Grubbs has been a vocal advocate for fair elections for years. “I’m honored and humbled,” she said. “This is about transparency, bipartisanship, and making Georgia’s elections better for everyone.” We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. We’ll be right back Break 2: Kia Mall of Georgia - DTL HOLIDAY STORY 4: Bittersweet: Candymakers navigate tariff, supply chain challenges during holiday season For Jocelyn Dubuke, owner of Jardi Chocolates, 2025 was a gamble. Faced with rising tariffs and supply chain chaos, she spent every dollar of last year’s revenue to stockpile chocolate. Why? To keep her customers from feeling the pinch. “Come January, I told my distributors, ‘Whatever chocolate you’ve got in the States, I want it,’” she said. “I wasn’t about to tell my customers halfway through the year, ‘Oh, by the way, your price just doubled.’” Chocolate’s tricky—rules you can bend, but not break. And with cacao only grown overseas, tariffs hit hard. STORY 5: Brookwood Tops Archer for First Deep South Classic Title in 10 Years Masai Knight spent most of the game dishing out assists—nine of them, to be exact—but his biggest play came when it mattered most. With Brookwood clinging to a four-point lead in the final minute of the Deep South Classic championship, Knight threaded a perfect pass to Grant Dehnke, who scored inside to stretch the lead to six. A defensive stop, a couple of free throws, and that was it—Brookwood sealed a 61-52 win, their first tournament title in a decade. FALCONS: Bijan Robinson was electric, C.J. Henderson clutch, and the Falcons? They held on—barely. Atlanta edged Arizona 26-19 on Sunday, thanks to Henderson’s diving interception with 90 seconds left, slamming the door on the Cardinals’ final drive. Robinson? Unreal. 171 total yards, a touchdown grab, and a spot in Falcons history—just the third player to hit 2,000 scrimmage yards in a season. Not bad company: Jamal Anderson, William Andrews. Arizona? Another heartbreak. Seven straight losses, 12 of their last 13. Brissett’s 203 yards weren’t enough, and a wild Michael Wilson TD catch wasn’t either. Atlanta’s still alive. Barely. On Christmas Day, you're getting more bullshit starring Bruce Willis for the holiday: I briefly sum up Willis' final franchise that is both DIE HARD inspired and a rather forced homage/tribute on top of that. Can you tell any of the 3 entries apart or do they all fade together? Were any of them different in quality or was it all one overlong mess? Plus, a brief spotlight on the indie director/producer duo (who also co-star in these films)! Join Us for Worship: Sundays at 9:00 AM & 11:00 AM https://www.flourishinggrace.org/plan-your-visit The Good News Is Beautiful | Advent Sermon from Isaiah 52:7–10 Three days before Christmas Eve, this message reminds us that this is not a throwaway Sunday. It's an invitation to slow down, to pause, and to truly see why the good news of Jesus isn't just true—it's beautiful. Many of us have been taught to defend Christianity primarily on whether it's factually accurate. That matters deeply. But for many people, especially those who've been hurt by religion, the bigger question is this: Even if it's true… is it good? Is it compelling? Is it beautiful? In this Advent message, we return to Isaiah 52:7–10, a passage that declares how beautiful the good news is—the announcement that God reigns. Long before Jesus was born, Isaiah envisioned a herald running over the mountains announcing peace, salvation, and the reign of God. This is not sentimental religion. This is a proclamation that changes everything. In this sermon, we explore what the “gospel” really is—not a self-improvement plan, not a checklist, not a set of religious instructions—but an announcement: King Jesus reigns. We walk through three reasons why this good news is truly beautiful: Jesus conquers through surrender Unlike every other king in history, Jesus wins by losing. He conquers not by crushing His enemies, but by becoming the Lamb who was slain. Power made perfect in weakness. Sin and death are dethroned The gospel doesn't promise perfection in this life—but it does promise a new King. Even in the rubble, the waste places, and the broken parts of our stories, God brings life. You don't have to hide your struggles. You are no longer owned by sin or death. The King has rescued you The gospel is not a plan for you to execute—it's a rescue accomplished by God Himself. Salvation is not something you achieve; it's something you receive. God rolls up His sleeves and does for us what we could never do for ourselves. This message is especially for: – Those who are tired of striving – Those who feel burdened by religious performance – Those who have been hurt by Christianity but still wonder if Jesus might be different – Those longing for peace in the middle of anxiety, grief, addiction, or uncertainty Jesus' invitation is simple and radical: yield. Step off the throne of your life and trust the gentle, good King who surrendered Himself for you. As we prepare for Christmas, we are reminded that when everything feels like it's falling apart, Jesus is still on His throne—and He is not distant, harsh, or indifferent. He is gentle and lowly in heart, and He offers rest for weary souls. If you're skeptical, searching, exhausted, or curious—this message is for you. Scripture: Isaiah 52:7–10 Series: Advent Theme: The Beauty of the Gospel If this message resonates with you, consider watching all the way through, sharing it with someone who needs hope this season, or joining us for Christmas Eve as we celebrate the coming of the King. The good news is beautiful. And King Jesus has come for you.
This episode is an invitation to reflect, listen deeply, and begin doing the work our faith already calls us to.Text to get in touch!Support the showIf you enjoyed this episode, subscribe and share! The words High and Late Middle Ages conjures up images of fog rising up over a field where knights in shining armor are trading blows with double handed swords, mighty bishops overseeing the construction of monumental cathedrals and peasants toiling on the land as serfs. The reason we see it that way goes back to the chivalric literature that celebrated the aristocratic lifestyle where tournaments and poetry mattered more than the humdrum world of business. But let's just take a look back at the High Middle Ages, the time of Richard the Lionheart, Saint Louis and Frederick Barbarossa. Who controlled access to the great endeavor of the time, the conquest of the Holy Land? Who re-opened up the connections to the wider world, from Novgorod to India and China? Who were the most ferocious fighters who neither expected norgranted any quarter? Who had all the money? These were the great cities of Italy, of Flanders, of Picardie and Provence and of the Holy Roman Empire. Verona under the Della Scala in the 14th century generated tax revenues twice as high as those of England, Venice capacity was sixty percent of what France could generate. And these cities fielded armies that, as we know, defeated the Holy Roman Emperors, even the most capable ones like Barbarossa and Frederick II time and time again. Their absolute dedication to fight to the end was evidenced by their extremely heavy and slow war carts, the Carroccios and by the bravery of the Flemish Militia at the Battle of the Golden Spurs. And the first European since Roman times to make to India and China wasn't a Knight errant, but a Venetian merchant, nor were the vast lands on the Eastern side of the continent linked up by military force. The crusades, the grand project of the age was as much a venetian mercantile adventure as a religious pilgrimage, culminating in the sack of Constantinople in 1204. What happened? Where did all these city states go? And why? That is what we are going to discuss today, when we look at the showdown between Maximilian of Habsburg, widower of the last duchess of Burgundy and father of Philip, the universally recognised heir of the Low Countries and the Flemish cities, and specifically its largest, the city of Ghent. The music for the show is Flute Sonata in E-flat major, H.545 by Carl Phillip Emmanuel Bach (or some claim it as BWV 1031 Johann Sebastian Bach) performed and arranged by Michel Rondeau under Common Creative Licence 3.0.As always:Homepage with maps, photos, transcripts and blog: www.historyofthegermans.comIf you wish to support the show go to: Support • History of the Germans PodcastFacebook: @HOTGPod Threads: @history_of_the_germans_podcastBluesky: @hotgpod.bsky.socialInstagram: history_of_the_germansTwitter: @germanshistoryTo make it easier for you to share the podcast, I have created separate playlists for some of the seasons that are set up as individual podcasts....
