Jde o uhlíkaté nanostruktury, které díky svým jedinečným vlastnostem bezesporu patří mezi materiály, s nimiž se v blízké budoucnosti budeme setkávat na každém kroku. Využití jejich extrémní mechanické pevnosti je realitou již dnes, kdy nanotrubičky začínají nahrazovat uhlíkatá vlákna v kompozitních materiálech. A přitom kompozity s „obyčejnými“ uhlíkatými vlákny už nyní vytlačují kovové slitiny z konstrukčních prvků všeho druhu i z předmětů běžného užití. Těmto materiálům se věnovalo už více než sto tisíc vědeckých článků a za jejich výzkum byly uděleny dvě Nobelovy ceny. Objeveny při tom byly teprve před pouhými 25 lety. Dr. Martin Kalbáč patří k našim nejvýznamnějším mladým vědcům v oblasti fyzikální chemie. V Ústavu fyzikální chemie Jaroslava Heyrovského pracuje jako vědecký pracovník od roku 2002 a zabývá se výzkumem nanomateriálů, zejména uhlíkových nanostruktur (grafen, uhlíkové nanotuby, fullereny, fullerenové peapody). Tyto materiály mají velký význam jak pro základní výzkum, tak pro celou řadu aplikací. Dr. Kalbáč na řadě příkladů demonstroval, že elektrochemické a in situ spektroelektrochemické metody poskytují klíčové informace pro objasnění jejich elektronických vlastností. Ocenění jeho vědecké práce (v roce 2004 obdržel prestižní stipendium nadace Alexandra von Humboldta; v roce 2007 Prémii Otto Wichterleho a v roce 2008 Cenu Akademie věd ČR za dosažené vynikající výsledky velkého vědeckého významu) jsou dokladem jeho vysokých odborných kvalit. Dr.Otakar Frank se uhlíkatými nanostrukturami zabývá již od studia na Přírodovědecké fakultě Univerzity Karlovy v Praze, kde se věnoval výskytu fullerenů v přírodě. Nyní působí jako vědecký pracovník v Oddělení elektrochemických materiálů Ústavu fyzikální chemie J. Heyrovského AV ČR. Momentálně zkoumá zejména mechanické vlastnosti grafenu a změny jeho elektronové struktury při mechanickém namáhání. Na tomto tématu spolupracuje mimo jiné s čerstvými nositeli Nobelovy ceny za fyziku Andre Geimem a Konstantinem Novoselovem. Je autorem publikací ve významných zahraničních časopisech včetně prestižního Nature Communications. V letošním roce obdržel prémii Otto Wichterleho a je nominován na cenu Česká hlava v kategorii Invence.
