The last day of summer vacation is one you never want to end... that is until you find yourself stuck in a time loop repeating it over and over again! This is the fate that Takaya and Kana find themselves faced with, and when the only reason Takaya can come up with for the loop is his regret of not finding a girlfriend over the holidays, the two teens find themselves in an awkward situation! What begins as a seemingly shallow conceit quickly blooms into a heartfelt journey. "The Long Summer of August 31st" by Ikkado Ito delivers a coming-of-age story that has more to say about human connection and growth than it does about the space-time continuum.Join Mat and Behind The Manga's WinterVenom91 as they delve into Takaya and Kana's evolving relationship, explore the manga's poignant themes of youth and regret, and discuss how they were pleasantly surprised to find genuine emotional depth beneath the sci-fi premise. That was in large part thanks to the aspirational friendship of main character Tobias "Jack" Wolff (Leonardo DiCaprio) and the closeted but undeniable Arthur Gayle. Doctor Jon Paul and Jordan discuss the film, the new book Black. Fat. En: "Jordi, isn't it a beautiful view? We could relax a little between books," Laia said with a playful tone.Ca: Però Jordi estava completament immers en els seus papers, amb el cap ple de dates, teories i problemes matemàtics.En: But Jordi was completely immersed in his papers, his head full of dates, theories, and math problems.Ca: Volia ser el millor, ser reconegut per la seva dedicació.En: He wanted to be the best, to be recognized for his dedication.Ca: Tanmateix, li costava amagar el cansament als ulls.En: However, he found it hard to hide the exhaustion in his eyes.Ca: "Necessito treure la millor nota, Laia. Això és important per al meu futur," va respondre, intentant no sonar massa dur.En: "I need to get the best grade, Laia. This is important for my future," he responded, trying not to sound too harsh.Ca: Laia el va observar, preocupada.En: Laia watched him, concerned.Ca: Ella també tenia ganes d'aprovar, però sabia que un equilibri era necessari.En: She wanted to pass too, but she knew that balance was necessary.Ca: A mesura que el sol del migdia es colava per les fissures de la cova, il·luminant rostres de sants en les formes de les pedres, una idea va començar a brollar en el cor de Jordi.En: As the midday sun trickled through the fissures of the cova, illuminating faces of saints formed by the stones, an idea began to bloom in Jordi's heart.Ca: Potser, només potser, afluixar la corda li permetria respirar millor i aclarir la ment.En: Perhaps, just maybe, loosening up would allow him to breathe better and clear his mind.Ca: Sense dubtes grans, va tancar els seus llibres, respirant profundament, sentint la frescor de la cova.En: Without great doubts, he closed his books, taking a deep breath, feeling the coolness of the cova.Ca: "Em sembla que tens raó, Laia. Anem a fer una passejada," va proposar amb un somriure tímid.En: "I think you're right, Laia. Let's go for a walk," he suggested with a shy smile.Ca: Van sortir a l'exterior, envoltats per l'exuberant verdor de la primavera.En: They went outside, surrounded by the lush greenery of spring.Ca: El cant dels ocells i la brisa suau els embolcallaven, i per primera vegada des de feia temps, Jordi va deixar de costat la pressió que pesava sobre les seves espatlles.En: The birds' song and the gentle breeze enveloped them, and for the first time in a while, Jordi set aside the pressure weighing on his shoulders.Ca: "Què faràs després dels exàmens?" va preguntar Laia, mirant-lo als ulls amb entusiasme.En: "What will you do after the exams?" Laia asked, looking at him with enthusiasm.Ca: "M'agradaria viatjar, descobrir nous llocs. I tu?" va respondre Jordi, sorpresa per les paraules que sortien dels seus llavis gairebé sense pensar.En: "I'd like to travel, discover new places. And you?" Jordi replied, surprised by the words that came from his lips almost without thinking.Ca: "Jo també somio amb això. Viure aventures, conèixer gent nova... potser podem fer-ho junts," va proposar Laia amb un riure alegre.En: "I also dream of that. Live adventures, meet new people... maybe we could do it together," Laia proposed with a cheerful laugh.Ca: Jordi va sentir una calidesa que no provenia només del sol.En: Jordi felt a warmth that didn't come only from the sun.Ca: Aquell moment en la cova, amb la riquesa de la història amarant les seves parets i amb la companyia de Laia, li va fer adonar-se que l'èxit acadèmic no era l'única cosa que importava.En: That moment in the cova, with the richness of history soaking its walls and with the company of Laia, made him realize that academic success wasn't the only thing that mattered.Ca: Quan van tornar a la cova, amb nous ànims i una perspectiva renovada, Jordi sabia que havia trobat una part important de si mateix —un equilibri entre la feina i el gaudi, entre els somnis i la realitat.En: When they returned to the cova, with renewed spirits and perspective, Jordi knew he had found an important part of himself—a balance between work and enjoyment, between dreams and reality.Ca: Jordi i Laia van reprendre els estudis, però aquesta vegada amb una confiança i una serenitat que no havien tingut abans.En: Jordi and Laia resumed their studies, but this time with a confidence and serenity they hadn't had before.Ca: I mentre repassaven junts, Jordi va agrair aquell dia a la cova de Sant Ignasi, que els havia unit i els havia donat una nova visió de la vida.En: And as they reviewed together, Jordi was grateful for that day at the cova de Sant Ignasi, which had united them and given them a new vision of life.   The message was delivered on Sunday, April 6th, 2025, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by 19 of our all Souls 9th graders. Remarks by Rev.Dr. Marlin Lavanhar. What if the search for meaning isn't about choosing the “right” path, but understanding the many ways people find purpose? How does belief—or disbelief—shape how we live, love, and leave a legacy? Through raw honesty, humor, ancestral reverence, and unexpected wisdom from sources like Kanye West and Mr. Rogers, a group of young thinkers share what they've discovered about spirituality, morality, and the complexity of being human. Each voice offers a distinct lens, yet together they ask the same enduring question: what truly connects us?

Better Learning Podcast
'Mean Girls' with Steven Shapiro & Nancy Shapiro Rapport

Better Learning Podcast

Mean Girls, directed by Mark Waters and written by Tina Fey, is a cult classic teen comedy based on Rosalind Wiseman's book Queen Bees and Wannabes. The film humorously yet accurately portrays the harsh realities of high school social dynamics, focusing on cliques, peer pressure, and the impact of popularity on self-identity. The story follows Cady Heron, a homeschooled girl navigating the cutthroat social hierarchy of public high school life after moving from Africa. As she infiltrates "The Plastics," the school's most popular clique, Cady faces a moral dilemma that tests her values, self-image, and relationships. Though often comedic, the movie sheds light on serious issues like bullying, conformity, and the challenges of adolescence. In this episode, Kevin Stoller, Nancy Shapiro Rapport, and Steven Shapiro discuss the movie through the lens of parenting and education. They explore the challenges faced by kids and parents in today's society, particularly focusing on the mental health crisis and the breakdown of family structures. The conversation delves into character analyses, the impact of school environments, and the importance of emotional health in raising children.   Takeaways: Consistent, intentional conversations about values and behavior are essential for raising resilient, emotionally healthy children. Small, deliberate actions can lead to significant, long-term results. A strong family culture, built on open communication and shared values, can help children navigate social pressures and define their identity. Parents need to engage in ongoing discussions about kindness, respect, and self-worth. Technology has fundamentally changed how teens communicate and form relationships. Setting boundaries around device use and fostering in-person connections can help counteract the isolating effects of screen time. Adolescence is a time of self-discovery, and social interactions can be intense and confusing. Understanding the pressures teens face helps parents provide better support. Schools can support parents by reinforcing positive behaviors and values, while communities can provide a support network for parents navigating the challenges of raising children. Comedy can be an effective way to connect with teens, understand their world, and initiate meaningful conversations. Movies like Mean Girls use humor to highlight real issues in adolescence.     About Steven Shapiro: Steven Shapiro is a veteran school reimaginer, with over 30 years of K-12 classroom teaching experience, 15 concurrent years as a high school humanities program director, and four years as a district leader of experiential learning. Steven is the host of the acclaimed podcast Experience Matters. He delivers keynote presentations on topics including supporting parents in the digital age, addressing the youth mental health crisis, and designing authentic learning experiences. Steven and his wife Susan are the proud parents of three adult children.   About Nancy Shapiro Rapport: Nancy spent the majority of her 34-year public-education career as a school counselor, supporting students and parents in navigating the challenging “middle years.” Her leadership roles in professional development and crisis management showcased her ability to identify needs, empathize with various stakeholders, and deliver results. As a certified Hudson Institute coach, Nancy has extensive training in coaching and human development. She has taught courses on learner mindset and question thinking, helping adults pursue a life of curiosity, inquiry, and possibility. Nancy brings a wealth of experience in both child and adult learning to her role as co-founder of Our Family Culture. What happens when your father creates a cult, and you're left to raise yourself in a decaying mansion filled with spiritual seekers and chaos? That's the world of Naked Girl, the powerful novel by Janna Brooke Wallack. In this conversation, Janna delves into the unconventional childhood that inspired her book, her thoughts on generational parenting shifts, and how she channeled her own emotions into compelling fiction. Set in 1980s Miami Beach, Naked Girl follows siblings Sienna and Siddartha as they navigate life within their father's bizarre, cult-like commune. Through their eyes, we experience the beauty, danger, and loneliness of growing up in an unpredictable world. With rich metaphors and immersive storytelling, Janna brings this unique setting to life, showing both the allure and the peril of freedom. We also dive into parenting, spirituality, and the generational cycle of raising children differently than we were raised. Janna shares insights from her own life as a mother of five, reflecting on how much of our past shapes our choices. Join us for this fascinating discussion and discover why Naked Girl has received critical acclaim, becoming a semifinalist for the 2024 Publishers Weekly Book Life Prize in Fiction. #JannaBrookeWallack #NakedGirl #BooksThatMakeYou #ComingOfAge #WritingCommunity #Parenting #CultSurvival

Their accidental meeting sparks a passionate and forbidden connection. Meanwhile, their friend Moritz struggles with puberty and academic pressure, leading to a tragic end. Author Constance Squires returns to Rock is Lit to discuss her debut novel, ‘Along the Watchtower', a powerful coming-of-age story set against the backdrop of military life, Cold War Germany, and rock ‘n roll.  ‘Along the Watchtower' follows thirteen-year-old Lucinda Collins as she arrives at a U.S. military base in Grafenwoehr, West Germany, in 1983. She knows the drill—setting up new quarters, navigating her parents' tensions, and keeping fellow Army brats at arm's length, knowing friendships won't last. She longs for a true home, but her father is haunted by Vietnam, and her mother is growing weary of Army life. As her family fractures, Lucinda finds solace in rock ‘n roll and begins to forge her own path to adulthood. Set against the ever-changing backdrop of military life, ‘Along the Watchtower' is a story of belonging, resilience, and the ghosts—both real and remembered—that shape us.  Constance Squires teaches creative writing at the University of Central Oklahoma. In addition to ‘Along the Watchtower', she is the author of ‘Live From Medicine Park' and the short story collection ‘Hit Your Brights', with work published in ‘The Atlantic', ‘Guernica', ‘The Dublin Quarterly', ‘Shenandoah', ‘Identity Theory', ‘The Rolling Stone 500', and more. Her brand-new novel, ‘Low April Sun', was published by the University of Oklahoma Press on Feb 11, 2025!
