We invited Reena from the “Better Call Daddy” podcast to rewatch Dirty Dancing and dig into why this 1987 classic still hits today. We talk about Baby's coming of age from a woman's point of view, Johnny's arc from hired talent to self-worth, the film's frank treatment of abortion, and that complicated father-daughter dynamic. Along the way, Reena shares personal stories that mirror Baby's bravery, and we unpack the movie's layered look at class, privilege, and nostalgia. Timestamps and Topics 00:00 - Welcome + Guest intro 00:00:32 - What is Better Call Daddy 00:02:17 - Why Dirty Dancing still resonates 00:03:55 - Two-minute plot rundown 00:06:48 - Baby's POV on sexuality 00:08:44 - Class, privilege, and stepping up 00:10:26 - Getting Dad involved for Penny 00:13:05 - Lakeside talk with Dad and accountability 00:16:18 - Johnny's growth and the age-gap lens 00:19:24 - Do not pedestal people 00:22:05 - Kellerman's old guard and changing times 00:23:43 - Why the resort hires grad-student waiters 00:27:10 - “I carried a watermelon” and belonging 00:28:15 - Dance as storytelling 00:30:59 - Behind the scenes of the practice-lift Key Takeaways The story centers Baby's perspective, which was rare for the era. Class is the engine of the plot, from entertainment staff to waiters and guests. Baby's bravery shows up as practical action to help Penny. The father-daughter thread is about holding each other to shared values. Johnny moves from being used to asserting his worth. The nostalgia lands because the movie pairs romance with clear commentary on labor and belonging. Quotes “We challenge you to a new movie or TV show every week.” “I have a podcast with my dad, then he weighs in with his intergenerational take.” “She's in pain. I need to fix her pain.” “Nobody puts Baby in a corner.” “I carried a watermelon.” Call to Action If you enjoyed this conversation, follow and subscribe on your favorite app, leave a quick review, and share the episode with a friend using #GeekFreaksPod. I watched a movie Sunday with a group of friends. Here are 12 things I learnt: 1. You probably aren't hungover on the couch at home uber-eatsing Maccas from the sofa. 2. You have taken the extraordinary measure of walking, using your perfectly capable legs even though you're still a bit stiff and sore from the gym. 3. This means you have visited the gym four times this week to ensure your ass will squeeze into the ever-shrinking vice of a seat provided these days. 4. You chat amongst yourselves loudly while the shorts are playing because you just do not give a flying shite about that level of decorum any longer. Nobody paid for the shorts, they paid for the film - the rest is marketing. 5. The short you do watch has Leonardo DiCaprio (heartthrob of youth) playing the cantankerous father figure to group of young actors you wouldn't know from a bar of soap. 6. You feel nostalgia that the movie is set in the early 2000s. 7. You find the young actors replicating that style —the clothes, the hair, the style— immediately lame for copying what we clearly wore better. 8. One of your friend has a moon boot on after a ‘fall' he took while out walking with this same group of friends the weekend prior. 9. You love the movie 'Caught Stealing' with Austin Butler. Not just because it's a good simple hearty action thriller but because it's only an hour and half long. 10. That means only one toilet break because it's impossible to sit on 660mls of fizzy water without the feeling you bladder may explode into a thousand pieces. 11. The timeframe is just enough before you need to rearrange to alleviate back pain. 12. You laugh, you're enthralled, you feel content sitting there in the dark with your buddies. Happy in the knowledge any worries you had going in are a world away from the grungy lower east side of Manhattan where the film is set. It's the little things you notice that paint a picture of where your life is at, how old you are and how you fit into a world of ever changing demographics. It's a reminder to enjoy the good moments in life with the people that make you happy. Because one day we'll either have dementia or be dead. Here's to middle age. Halfway dead and fine with it. This week, we're talking about three outstanding coming-of-age stories that capture the highs, lows, and messy in-betweens of growing up.First up, is The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012), Stephen Chbosky's heartfelt look at friendship, trauma, and finding your place in the world. Then we move to Catherine Hardwicke's Thirteen (2003), a raw and unflinching portrait of adolescence and rebellion. And finally, we dive into Dídi (2024), Sean Wang's semi-autobiographical debut that beautifully balances humor, identity, and the awkwardness of early teenage years. Each film captures the heartbreak and the hope of finding out who you are on the way to becoming your true self.❗️SEND US A TEXT MESSAGE ❗️Support the showSign up for our Patreon for exclusive Bonus Content.Follow the podcast on Instagram @gimmethreepodcastYou can keep up with Bella on Instagram @portraitofacinephile or Letterboxd You can keep up with Nick: on Instagram @nicholasybarra, on Twitter (X) @nicholaspybarra, or on LetterboxdShout out to contributor and producer Sonja Mereu. Send us a textAccording to Miriam Webster, the Bildungsroman is a novel about the moral and psychological growth of a main character. Today, we're kicking off our Anne of Green Gables bonus episode series with an introduction to the genre, a basic examination of life on Prince Edward Island, the 7th Canadian province where the Anne books primarily take place, and some context and backstory about L.M. Montgomery, the creator and author of this timeless series. If we think back to our high school days, it's likely that most of us read popular titles like Catcher in the Rye, Invisible Man, and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. But what about coming of age stories that center the experiences of women and girls? Popularized by titles like Jane Eyre and Pride and Prejudice, the Bildungsroman has also been used throughout history by female authors to challenge societal expectations of women's roles and the politics that make them law. Coming of age stories about women and girls are oftentimes infantilized and deemed appropriate reading material for girls only. We argue they're important and good for everyone, regardless of age and gender. The themes and journeys depicted reflect a very different perspective when boys and men are not the central protagonist, focusing more on romance, gender roles, and access to independence and mobility. Join us this Friday, and for the following five as we read and discuss all eight of the Anne of Green Gables books and the 1980's movie adaptations within this feminist, coming of age context. We'll cover everything from our least and most favorite characters and plot points, to how L.M. Montgomery uses the genre to examine political issues, women's roles, and society at large. We'll bring you fun facts, and even a bonus feature called “That's JUST Like A Man!” These books surprised us in all the best ways and we cannot wait to share them with you! And today we even bring you a fave and fail with a childhood twist, and an old timey / animated smash or pass.Don't be shy, subscribe! New Podcasts every Tuesday!! Click here to try it out!Welcome back to Bad Dads Film Review! This week we're donning our Ray-Bans, sliding across the living room floor, and revisiting the film that launched Tom Cruise into superstardom — Risky Business (1983). Equal parts coming-of-age comedy, satire, and cautionary tale, it's a movie that defined a certain brand of 80s cool while slyly critiquing the era's obsession with wealth and success.Directed by Paul Brickman, Risky Business follows Joel Goodson (Tom Cruise), a high-achieving Chicago high school student left home alone while his parents are away. Initially envisioning a week of harmless fun, things spiral after a night with call girl Lana (Rebecca De Mornay) leads Joel into a world of escalating consequences, entrepreneurial schemes, and moral compromises. What begins as a teenage fantasy of freedom and rebellion becomes a sharply observed journey into adulthood — and a satire of the “make it big” mentality that fuelled the 80s.While it has that glossy 80s comedy appeal, Risky Business is far smarter and more cynical than it first appears. It's one of those films that teenage audiences might take at face value as a tale of freedom and rebellion, but adults will recognise as a sharp social critique. That said, it's very much an R-rated outing — so maybe not one for family movie night. In the end, Risky Business is more than just a star-making turn for Tom Cruise. It's a stylish, clever, and surprisingly subversive look at ambition, temptation, and the thin line between opportunity and exploitation.

We discuss the self-infantilization of millennials and older zoomers, which is a reflection of the crisis of meaning and deep rot at the heart of liberal modernity. befälhavare.En: This was the first time he had the opportunity to see the place where his father, Captain Lars, spent his days as a commander. En: Axel was a curious twelve-year-old boy, full of dreams about sea adventures and life at sea. En: His father had always been his hero, but Axel sometimes wondered if he himself could fit into the strict and missions at sea. En: Although Axel listened attentively, he still felt small compared to everything around him. En: Determinedly, Axel decided to explore the base on his own. En: He thought that if he could prove his bravery, his father would see him as someone who could also belong here. En: But as he sneaked around, he lost himself among the many buildings and ended up in a restricted zone without realizing it.Sv: Plötsligt ljöd ett högt alarm, och Axel stod som fastfrusen.En: Suddenly, a loud alarm sounded, and Axel stood frozen. En: People began to hurry back and forth with serious faces. En: His heart pounded hard in his chest, scared of what would happen next and what his father would say. En: When Captain Lars appeared, he wasn't angry.Sv: Tvärtom, han var lugn och förstående.En: On the contrary, he was calm and understanding. En: He placed a hand on Axel's shoulder and smiled encouragingly. En: "You have nothing to worry about, Axel.Sv: Missförstånd händer, även för de mest erfarna av oss."En: Misunderstandings happen, even to the most experienced of us."Sv: Axel kände en värme spred sig i kroppen.En: Axel felt a warmth spreading through his body. En: His fear faded away when he realized he didn't need to impress his father through risky actions. En: Lars convinced Axel that his curiosity and courage were qualities he already admired. En: They said goodbye to the base together, with Axel carrying a newfound sense of security and self-confidence. En: As they left the harbor area behind, Lars assured his son that true courage lay in learning from one's mistakes and in the willingness to explore. En: Axel smiled and agreed, knowing now that no matter what the future held, he would always have a place in his father's world.
