Send us Fan MailIt's time to celebrate Frameline's 50th anniversary (June 17th-27th), the longest running and largest LGBTQIA film festival in the world! We are proud to bring you two very different films that celebrate representation from international independent voices. At the Place of Ghosts is a trauma-centric horror film that follows two estranged brothers as they venture into the wilderness to exorcise a demon and confront the ghosts of the past in order to find healing and closure. We are joined by director Bretten Hannam to dive into the difficulties of filming in the middle of a dense forest, the importance of sharing the indigenous language, and the sibling dynamics and family secrets at the core of this film.Black Burns Fast is a sweet and awkward coming-of-age story about a scholarship student at an elite all girls' private school whose world is turned upside down when she forms a crush on the new girl in school. Director Sandulela Asanda shares why she wanted to share a lighthearted queer narrative, telling a story that she wanted to see as a kid, and how writing a letter to her 17-year-old self helped her write the screenplay. At the Place of Ghosts is screening on June 20th at the Roxie, get tickets HERE!Black Burns Fast is screening on June 19th at New Parkway and June 26th at the Roxie, get tickets HERE!Follow director Bretten Hannam on IGFollow director Sandulela Asanda on IGSupport the showThanks for listening and for your support! Join us to hear them share their Credo ("I believe") statements. As another cohort passes through the "Arch of Love," we celebrate all the people who have contributed to our multigenerational community. The service will be accompanied by music from the First Parish Bell Choir and First Parish Choir.  Offering and Giving First The Giving First program donates 50% of the non-pledge offering each month to a charitable organization that we feel is consistent with Unitarian Universalist principles. The program began in November 2009, and First Parish has donated over $200,000 to more than 70 organizations. For May 2026, The First Pioneer Valley Dream Center will share half the offering collected during Sunday worship at First Parish.  The First Pioneer Valley Dream Center, based in Springfield, MA, provides essential services like food and clothing at no cost to struggling families and individuals from all walks of life. Living their call to love and serve God and others, their goal is to inspire hope and empower lives. One of their services is to provide purpose-driven volunteer work to the residents of the local correctional facility where one of our First Parish members was housed recently. This member nominated the organization in recognition of their excellent work and in gratitude for the care and support they offered her during her service at the Dream Center. In her third feature (Saccharine, in theaters now and on Shudder in July), Natalie Erika James tackles themes of obsession, disordered eating, and queerness. And while the two movies are VERY different (one a psychological horror, the other a quiet, BAFTA-winning drama), those are all themes Saccharine shares with My Summer of Love, Pawel Pawlikowski's 2004 film that introduced the world to Emily Blunt. Then, Jordan has one quick thing about Jane Schoenbrun's upcoming Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, which just premiered at Cannes. The year 1968 has become synonymous with protest and upheaval around the world. On this episode of the Transatlantic, Bakhti talks with Adrian Matus, author of the book The Long 1968 in Hungary and Romania, about what this pivotal year looked like in Hungary, Romania, and elsewhere behind the Iron Curtain. Bakhti and Adrian discuss how the generation of eastern Europeans born admidst World War II resisted the authoritarian systems they grew up in in uncoventional ways—through universities, literature, and even making their own instruments. Adrian then shares how the legacy of the '68ers lives on in Ukrainians under Russian occupation who are keeping their culture and identity alive using many of the same methods. --- Adrian Matus is an educator and scholar annd the Editor of the Democracy and Culture section. He defended his PhD in History at the European University Institute in 2022. Subsequently, he wrote a book entitled, "The Long 1968 in Hungary and Romania." Previously he graduated from Université Sorbonne Paris IV and Babeș-Bolyai University from Cluj-Napoca. From 2020 to 2022, he curated the "Communist Parties from Non-Socialist Countries" collection at the Blinken Open Society Archives, then continued researching this topic as a postdoctoral fellow at the New Europe College Bucharest. Adrian has also worked on various educational initiatives, designing history, cultural studies and social sciences syllabi for high-school students, asylum-seekers, and refugees. --- This podcast is hosted by Bakhti Nishanov and produced by Alanna Novetsky and Carly Breland, in conjunction with the Senate Recording Studio.

Send us Fan MailThis week on the episode author Margaret Gurevich stops by to discuss her latest book, Yasha's Amazin' Bar Mitzvah. Growing up as an immigrant and more. ****Margaret Gurevich (she/her) is a middle-school teacher and the author of Ain't It Funny, multiple Who Was? books, and the award-winning Chloe by Design series. When not writing or teaching, Margaret enjoys hiking, bingeing too many shows, and spending time with her family. She lives in New Jersey with her husband, son, and their wise cat, Goosie.YASHA'S AMAZIN' BAR MITZVAH offers a poignant and authentic portrayal of the Russian American experience in the 1980s while speaking to the universal challenges of growing up and finding one's place in the world. “Like Yasha's parents, my parents fought hard to achieve the ‘American Dream',” says Margaret. “However, in spite of attending night school for months to learn English, holding degrees from the Soviet Union equivalent to MA+ in the US, and achieving a level of employment in the United States that allowed them to save up to buy a house in the suburbs, to many, my parents' Russian accents were still their main identifying feature. As for me, while I did not have a Russian accent, it took a long time for people to stop seeing my differences—food, clothes, experiences—as anything besides being ‘other'. In time, like Yasha, I learned to embrace the reality of being a hyphenated American—someone who is Russian and Jewish and just as American as others." When author Margaret Gurevich set up to write YASHA'S AMAZIN' BAR MITZVAH  she was basing the story on her own experiences growing up during the end of the Cold War. Gureveich's latest novel is a touching and humorous story following the journey of a young Russian American boy as he navigates the challenges of adolescence, cultural identity, and the pursuit of his dreams.  Set in 1986, thirteen-year-old Yasha Reznik is struggling to adjust to his new life in the suburban town of Rockwood, New Jersey. Having moved from the close-knit Russian community of Brighton Beach, Yasha finds himself feeling out of place and yearning for the familiarity of his old neighborhood. His parents may see their move as the fulfillment of the "American Dream," but for Yasha, it feels like anything but. As Yasha prepares for his Bar Mitzvah, he faces the typical trials of adolescence, compounded by the cultural differences that set him apart from his peers. Despite his efforts to fit in, including adopting the name "Jake," he is still seen as an outsider. The only person who truly understands him is Bernie, a resident at the senior citizen home where Yasha volunteers for his Bar Mitzvah project. Bernie shares Yasha's passion for the New York Mets, and together they dream of seeing the team win the World Series. Determined to make this dream a reality, Yasha embarks on a quest to secure tickets to the game, all while grappling with his own identity and the complexities of friendship. ****If you would like to contact the show Dauna@betertopodcast.comFollow us on Social MediaYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCX0ETs2wpOHbCuhUNr0XFTw?view_as=subscriberInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/author_d.m.needom/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedomSupport the podcast here: https://www.patreon.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedom©2Support the show

Poof that hair and swap around your vaguely ethnic family tropes as we serve up 1988's Mystic Pizza. Why must Hollywood erase the proud tradition of Greek American pizzerias? Is there a single bearable male character in this movie? And can we get more sister scenes in this sister movie? We hopefully have more answers for you in this episode than an emotionally confused teenager at the end of an angsty summer.
