Riders Of The Purple Sage and True Grit are two American western novels, although they share a genre they share little else. This episode is about how they are so different and what makes each great.
Ed Mell came by the studio today and I was thrilled to be able to record a 2-part podcast with him. Honestly, I've been trying to get Ed on the podcast for three whole years. I've had so many people on Art Dealer Diaries talk about Ed Mell in their own podcasts... I think it's probably up to about a dozen people now. It's just one of those things, you know? It's hard to get together sometimes especially when a pandemic gets in the way. Out of all the podcasts I've done recently, Ed's was a podcast I really wanted to do in person. I've known him for 25+ years and for me just being able to sit across the desk from him and have a wonderful discussion about his life, all of his accomplishments, the people that have influenced him throughout his life and made him who he is and what he is, was a gift for me. He's just such an interesting guy, definitely not the type of person that you get to meet every day. Ed's artwork is really important to me and to many, many other people as well. I collect his artwork and have since I've represented him. I personally own numerous Ed Mell works of art including his oil paintings, bronze sculptures, lithographs, and display them in my home. In the second part (Epi. 153), we go into a bit more detail about the people that influenced him and the types of things he's doing these days. From sculpture to flowers, to figurative works, this is one that everyone needs to listen to. Put it on your hit parade, Ed Mell on Art Dealer Diaries Podcast episode 153.
This is part two of a two-part podcast. We're in the weeds in the second part of the Kristin Atwell Ford podcast. We discuss films she's created, including one that she did for the Salt River Project narrated by Peter Coyote which received an Emmy - in fact, she has two Emmys for her projects - and she explains how that project came to be. This is an individual who's donated her entire life to making documentary films and of subjects that aren't the normal topics you might think commercial. Kristin also discusses her influences and the individuals that are important in the field of documentary films, such as the celebrated Ken Burns and his impact on documentary filmmaking as a whole.Kristin's current project "Riders of the Purple Sage: The Making of a Western Opera" revolves around the making of a Western opera and highlights the artistic visions of all involved, including Medicine Man Gallery represented artist Ed Mell. Due to the covid-19 pandemic, the wide-release of this documentary was delayed a year and is being released in 2021 instead. One of the reasons that we're having her on the podcast is for a fundraiser for actors. It's important to be able to support actors and to support those people that are in the arts that really can't make a living during a pandemic. From March 25th – April 11th, 2021 you can see Kristin's movie from the comfort of your own home, with half of all proceeds benefitting The Actors Fund, a human resources organization that provides a safety net for all entertainment professionals - onstage and backstage, in film, theater, television, music, opera, radio, and dance. It's available for $10 (link below) and is a tax-deductible project helping people in need. This is part one of a two-part podcast.I had Emmy-winning filmmaker Kristin Atwell Ford on the podcast today. Kristin has an interesting connection to the world of Western art. One thing you'll notice when you listen to my podcasts is that I love to go through the backstories of my guests. I've found that if I can get a better understanding of where they came from and their influences, then I can get a better sense of where they are as a person today. This podcast is no exception.Kristin's parents were very unique. Her father was a historian and her mother was a businesswoman that dealt with a great deal of hardship and eventually found massive success. She was clearly a guiding force in how Kristin does what she does and why she does what she does which is love history and theater. Kristin's abilities and interests converge in her ability to tell a story and communicate historical/artistic significance to any viewer. In part one we're going to discuss Kristin's backstory and her current project "Riders of the Purple Sage: The Making of a Western Opera." This film revolves around the making of a Western opera and highlights the artistic visions of all involved, including Medicine Man Gallery represented artist Ed Mell. Starts with some pretty familiar favorites but moves quickly into a ton of brand new to the show tunes, as well as pushing recent discoveries like Sammy Brue & Elijah Ocean. Pretty & brand new Australian Country Music from Ellisa Pernu, awesome Silver Jews, brutal Drive By Truckers and a frankly wayward stagger into the 1970's with The Ozark Mountain Daredevils and new Riders Of The Purple Sage. And a whole heap more.
