Sometimes you do podcasts not only because you're interested in the person, but you're also interested in just history, right? In this case, it's the history of Skip Andrews, his own personal journey as an artist, as well as his relationship with the iconic Arizona artist, Ed Mell.Skip and Ed were friends in high school and ended up working together in New York City in the late 60's and early 70's. They started a company together called Sagebrush Studios and did some really great work together. I got to hear stories about Ed and Skip and their antics and see artwork that I would have never guessed was done by Ed Mell.We see plenty of work by Skip as well who is a highly regarded illustrator, designer and airbrush artist. He did magazine covers for National Lampoon and Arizona Highways, worked on ad campaigns for Coca-Cola and Dickies, and showed us many other incredible works of commercial art.So this is probably the kind of video that is best taken in through YouTube, because you can see the images that we're talking about, and there's just something about seeing Skip's face as we discuss one of his closest and dearest friends. I found to be very interesting. I learned a lot. I had a great time. I recently gave a lecture called "Ed Mell: A Closer Look" at the Phoenix Art Museum and I wanted to share it with all of you as an episode of my podcast.It was an interesting  experience for me for two reasons. One, I knew Ed very well as a friend. Two, I represented him for almost 30 years. So with this lecture, I got to think and speak about him how an art historian would. The friendship element was part of the lecture, no doubt, but the talk is filled with the other more analytical art world components as well. For example, I talk about the difference between a 1980 Ed Mell and a 1981 Ed Mell. I analyze the kind of subject matter that he did and when he did it and why he did it. If you love Ed Mell you will probably find this talk that I did to be very interesting and maybe even compelling. I thought it was a really enjoyable  from the speaking perspective. The Phoenix Art Museum just has such a beautiful collection and they have an exhibit called "Ed Mell: In the Studio" in their all new James K. Ballinger Wing. The wing is going to be closed for a renovation from now until mid September 2026, but it'll be open again after Labor Day. Once it opens back up, the Ed Mell exhibition will be up through April 2027. Most of the work in the exhibit came right out of his studio, including some very early pastels and small oil studies. It's a very cool setup and it was curated by Chief Curator Olga Viso, who I interview at the end of the podcast about the show.So if you love Ed Mell, you might want to watch this one. On the surface, the 25th Amendment is a perfect mechanism for providing a stable transition of Presidential power. But that's not what early state ratification critics thought. And it's not how Hollywood writers oft envision it. When debating the 25th amendment to the US Constitution, one state legislator called it rushing "pell-mell into madness." Another said it did not complete the very purpose it intended and should go back to Congress for fixing. And still another said it has a huge hole around the vice presidency. These state quibbles were enough for a scare, but the states ratified anyway, in the wake of the Cuban Missile Crisis and a bipartisan push. But were the arguments valid? Although the 25th is designed to potentially remove a President, it is also designed to avoid doing that if at all possible. It was written by politicians to avoid politics, and as several TV and movie writers have found, it could create lots of politics. If you find it confusing, you aren't alone. Some opponents during its ratification took a look at what came out of the hard work of Sen. Kefauver and Bayh and said - why was it written this way? And not all their criticisms were answered. The Canadian facility, located just north of Toronto, targets production of 6,500 tons annually starting in 2027.CEO Trent Mell described the company's transformation as "Electra 2.0" following a comprehensive financial restructuring. The company raised $82.5 million in new capital from three levels of government, including the U.S. Department of Defense, alongside private investors. Simultaneously, lenders converted 60% of $67 million in debt to equity, demonstrating confidence in the project's viability. This recapitalization addresses the financial constraints that had paralyzed development over the previous two years.The brownfield refinery redevelopment carries an estimated capital expenditure of $69 million and is valued at over $250 million upon completion. At full capacity, the facility targets $30 million in annual EBITDA, with first-year production expected to generate $15-18 million during the 12-month ramp-up period.Commercial stability comes from a five-year tolling agreement with LG, the largest non-Chinese cobalt buyer globally. This contract covers 60-80% of production at fixed processing margins, insulating Electra from cobalt price volatility. Mell emphasized a conservative approach: "Don't get greedy. Lock in a margin. Let's just not mess it up."Demand fundamentals remain robust despite slower electric vehicle adoption rates. Mell noted that industrial and defense applications, including military drones and night vision goggles, would consume the facility's entire output even without EV demand. Indicative interest already stands at twice production capacity.The 2026 construction timeline includes contractor selection in December 2025, with detailed budgets released in January 2026. Cold commissioning begins late 2026, positioning the facility for commercial production throughout 2027. A reworked entry layout of concrete, wood, and galvanized steel supports daily life. A new dining room—glass-walled and extending into the woods—opens to terraces and gardens. Upstairs, lowered partitions in the new primary suite emphasize an unimpeded ceiling.The simple concrete guest house opens to the pool and garden. Strategic openings animate the interior with shifting light, and a wooden box encloses utilities.These buildings create a calm and adaptable living environment—a careful balance of elemental materials well suited to the daily patterns and future needs of its occupants.
