Dr Michelle Dickinson: nanotechnologist on the study revealing pop song melodies have gotten simpler over the last few decades

'They don't make music like they used to'- you might say as you listen to the latest hits on the radio. Well, new research published in the journal Scientific Reports might prove you right. In the study, researchers analysed 1,131 melodies from 360 singles that reached the top 5 US Billboard charts each year between 1950 and 2022. They chose to study melodies because when asked to sing a popular song, most people would sing the melody rather than its bassline or drum pattern. They found that the complexity of song rhythms and pitch arrangements continued to decline over the decades. The big changes, which the researchers call ‘melodic revolutions' were in 1975, 1996 and 2000. In 1952, You Belong With Me was released by Jo Stafford and it contained a complex, rhythmic melody. While there is a beat in the background, Jo doesn't sing on beat and instead flows over the music with her voice. Moving to 1975, Love Will Keep Us Together was released by Captain & Tennille. Here, the singing is kept on beat and it's a much simpler song rhythmically. Then in 2009, we had Poker Face by Lady Gaga, where the same note is sung over and over again with a very simple melody. While the researchers found that melodic complexity decreased over time, they also found that the average number of notes played per second increased, mostly due to technological advances. In the 1950s, music production was limited to whatever physical instruments could be used in the song. However, today's digital music production software can create almost any sound imaginable. So while melodies are getting simpler, chords are getting more complex - meaning the overall complexity of modern songs are the same as the golden oldies, it's just the balance of melodies over production that has changed. Send us a Text Message. From an early age, Harry Tuft was involved in piano and clarinet lessons. Through a summer camp counselor, he learned about the ukulele and became interested in playing that instrument. From there, he moved to a baritone ukulele, and then a six-string guitar. His father loved classical music and opera and would often play traditional classical during dinner. After dinner, Tuft would listen to the pop and R&B stations of the day and sing along with the likes of Nat King Cole, Jo Stafford, and Perry Como. From John McEuen: "With the airing of Ken Burns Country Music, [John] McEuen has brought acoustic music to many new fans, taking part in 4 episodes of the series. Episode 6 is called Will The Circle Be Unbroken and John closes that one. A co-founding member of Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (1966, with a dream ‘to be on the radio').  October 2017, after [the] 50th anniversary tour, John left the band to pursue his own tour dates and projects, and stepped off the bus." From a very young age, inspired by a piano inherited from his grandparents, Howard Dlugasch took piano lessons of his own volition. By his early teens, he started playing a multitude of instruments, such as guitar, drums, bass, and vocals. He jokes that he is mediocre at all of them, but only because he is a musician who wants to focus on a multitude of instruments at once rather than completely on one specific instrument.  Thank you for listening to The Mountain-Ear podcast featuring the news and culture from peak to peak. In early 2009, the song was covered by Ronnie Milsap on his gospel album Then Sings My Soul.

Mail Call was an American radio program that entertained American soldiers from 1942 until 1945, during World War II. Lt. Col. Thomas A.H. Lewis (commander of the Armed Forces Radio Service) wrote in 1944, "The initial production of the Armed Forces Radio Service was 'Mail Call,' a morale-building half hour which brought famed performers to the microphone to sing and gag in the best American manner." The program featured popular entertainers of that day, such as Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Judy Garland, and Dinah Shore, performing musical numbers and comedy skits to boost the morale of soldiers stationed far from their homes. Lewis added, "To a fellow who has spent months guarding an outpost in the South Seas, Iceland or Africa a cheery greeting from a favorite comedian, a song hit direct from Broadway, or the beating rhythm of a hot band, mean a tie with the home to which he hopes soon to return Listen to our radio station Old Time Radio https://link.radioking.com/otradio Listen to other Shows at My Classic Radio https://www.myclassicradio.net/ Remember that times have changed, and some shows might not reflect the standards of today's politically correct society. Dinah Shore was only 25 years old when she did this live broadcast for NBC Radio. It was only 14 days after Pearl Harbor and as World War II for the United States began just before the Christmas season, NBC felt to keep the morale up and to help to sell US War Bonds... they would bring stars like Dinah Shore on the air in live broadcasts. She was also working as the regular vocalist on the Eddie Cantor Show at this time. She does an excellent medley of songs on this program... songs that demonstrated her incredible talent. She was ranked #16 of the top 50 television stars of all time. She worked with Benny Goodman and both Jimmy and Tommy Dorsey. She had a string of 80 charted popular hits from 1940-57 and she had a 40 year career on television... musical variety shows, her own talk show... she was often compared with Jo Stafford and Patti Page. Dinah Shore passed away at the age of 77 on February 24, 1994. The photo on this posting is from 1943. This track will be stored in the Christmas Playlist

When I started this podcast in late 2019, I never imagined in a million years that I'd be eulogizing my father a year later. If you get a chance, check out the Tribute to My Father from December 17th, 2020. Ken Carfagno, Sr was born in Northeast Philadelphia on May 11th, 1936. He was the youngest of 6. Ken Sr. married Gabriella Corbett on October 20th, 1956. They were 20 years old. Soon after, they had their first of three sons, Ken Carfagno, Jr. That's my dad. 18-year-old Ken Jr married 16-year-old Lynn Driban in August 1976 and Ken Carfagno III was born on March 1st, 1977. Ken Sr became a Pop-Pop at the age of 40. My parents didn't stay married long. I have shared this so many times in this podcast as it's so vital to understand me. My single mom raised me during the week as a kid, while my dad and mostly my Pop-Pop raised me on weekends. The most influential man in my life has always been my Pop-Pop. In latter years, I started calling him my father because he raised me into the man that I am. Thank you for listening to this opening and my genealogy story. I just wanted to give you context to this episode.  My Pop-Pop had a favorite breakfast diner. It's called the Jem Restaurant in East Norriton, PA. Tony Bello opened this restaurant in 1974 with the sole goal of serving & providing a place for the community to connect. Due to the 1950's theme, it attracted many patrons that are nostalgic from that era. My Pop-Pop definitely found this at the Jem. He LOVED the 50's. As I said, he fell in love with his bride, my Nana in 1951. He went steady with her while they finished school. He worked at her parent's bakery to save up money listening to his favorites of Frank Sinatra and Jo Stafford. Pop loved the 50's and he would mosey into the Jem every Saturday morning for years. His routine was the same. He's sit at one of the counter stools with his newspaper and talk to the other old guys that were there. They all knew him. Tony knew him. He'd order the same thing. A decaf coffee and corn muffin. He was so proud of me. I heard stories over the years of how the old guys and Tony at the Jem all knew that Ken's grandson was a Penn State grad, an engineer. He owned a cleaning company. He was married to the best daughter ever. He gave the family the first girl (Christianna) in 3 generations. The only thing he didn't brag about me was how badly I'd beat him in ping-pong.Read the rest of this article at the Smart Cleaning School website
