Episode Notes S6E9 -- Join us as we sit down with the one and only Rico Anderson. He'll be in the house telling tales from S.W.A.T to Get Gone and beyond. As an award winning actor, a sci fi nerd, the oldest of 11 children on his mothers side (6 biological / 5 adopted) and the 3rd of 4 children on his fathers side, Rico was born in Seaside/Monterey, CA and raised on the south side of Chicago as well as the San Francisco Bay Area. It was in Chicago where Rico's love for the arts began. As a little boy, his 3rd grade class went to a touring performance of The Wiz, starring Stephanie Mills. Even at that early age, Rico sat there mesmerized and amazed at the performances. Memories from that performance stuck in the back of his mind and would not surface until a few years later when his family moved to Berkeley, California. The bug bit again and Rico started performing in several plays and Independent films. Rico also majored in Theatre Arts at San Francisco State University. Eventually, Rico moved to Los Angeles and has been blessed to have many film, television, voice over and theatre credits to his name. Greg, Chris in Miami, Bobby, and Mike discuss the lesser-known Walter Hill film, lovingly referred to on the show as "Swamp Warriors". When a group of National Guardsmen get stuck in the swamps of Louisiana, they find themselves hunted by locals who really don't like outsiders. Featuring a cast of great charactor actors: Keith Carradine, Powers Booth, Fred Ward, Peter Coyote, and Brion James, this is a movie made for the bin.
It's been way too long since we were graced by the wisdom of Tricycle, the Buddhist magazine. But thankfully, that ends this week, starting off with a phenomenal article by Peter Coyote. In it, he helps us explore the nature of self. Or more to the point, the absence of self. He let's us know that when we given up the need to define ourselves, we understand we are connected to everything. You won't want to miss this one. Acclaimed actor, famed narrative voice and Zen Buddhist priest Peter Coyote joined us in a far reaching dialogue which took in his acting and voice careers as well as his life and his life philosophy and sharp edged political views. We spoke, too, about the content in his latest book, Zen in the Vernacular and his early, preeminent family influences and the shaping influences of the Diggers, as well as his heroin addiction and his radical political beliefs and faith in what he calls radical optimism and the four noble truths of Buddhism. He named those he believes deserve to be called our greatest actors, told all about of his first meeting with Ken Burns and spoke of the inequity of wealth and CEO salaries as well as Paul Weyrich's Christian nationalist film "Bad Faith" and the infamous Lewis Powell memo. He described the U.S. presidential race as democracy versus autocracy and the rise of Trump politically as the product of a sixty year struggle. We concluded with him speaking about his name change to Coyote and defining the Buddhist concept of dharma. Time well spent with a fascinating man of many accomplishments and strong views on politics and our essential connectedness.
We hear a reading from local actor and Zen Buddhist priest, Peter Coyote. It's about Japanese gift wrapping around Buddhist teachings.

Helmut Brink is a little German boy who wants nothing more than to play the brand new sport called “basketball”. I know what you're thinking. Didn't we just fight a World War against the Germans? Why would we let them enjoy our (second) national pastime? But Helmut is a special little boy — he and his sister Brigitte were adopted as war refugees by a kindly Reverend of a little farming town in Washington, USA. They do their chores and say the Pledge of Allegiance like any other American schoolchildren, so they are allowed to have a little basketball as a treat. That's the philosophy of school teacher Martin Conlon (played by Peter Coyote) in THE BASKET, a feature film for families released theatrically in the year 2000. Martin sees the men of his town struggling to pool their finances together to buy a new harvester machine, so he hatches the crazy scheme of putting together an amateur basketball team to compete for a tournament's cash prize, having been trained in the exotic art by none other than basketball inventor James Naismith himself. Christians seem to love movie plots about people playing old timey sports — we're reminded of SPIRIT OF THE GAME, a more recent Kevin Sorbo-fronted film about an early basketball tournament set in Australia. But THE BASKET goes beyond sportsmanship to weave a surprisingly complex plot with themes of war and immigration, set around the story of a fictitious opera DER KORB that was actually originally written and composed for this film. It's still hard to imagine a film like this would ever have broad enough popular appeal to be released in theaters — it's slow, goofy, pastoral, and much of the dialogue is delivered in a fake German accent. It speaks to a bygone pop cultural era where Christian stories were accepted in secular contexts because people appreciated their overt wholesomeness. Although THE BASKET may not be the most exciting sports film, it does feature one of the most shocking endings to a basketball game ever imagined. We can only hope James Naismith is smiling down at this film from heaven — in between teaching Jesus how to land the perfect free throw. Paul becomes Javi's psychotherapist as we journey back to June 11, 1982, in this white-knuckle discussion of colonialism, media saturation, and the deservedly hallowed place that cinematic titan Steven Spielberg occupies in our popular culture — all of it musingly masquerading as a discourse on what would become (for the next decade) the biggest blockbuster of all time, E.T.: THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL. Don't miss our heaviest, most introspective episode, which ranges from a profoundly personal elegy for a suburban American childhood that will never again exist, to a rhapsodic ode to the exquisite magic of cinema. We'll be right here.

In season one of Our Connected Culture we explore how late science fiction author Terry Bisson's lifelong activism was central to how he imagined a better world in his 1988 novel Fire on the Mountain, using previously unreleased and archival audio of Bisson and as well as interviews with friends and comrades including Peter Coyote, Kim Stanley Robinson, Annalee Newitz, Paul Park, Mary Corey, and John Kessel. The episode features commentary from Terry himself, Mary Corey, Peter Coyote, Cory Doctorow, Ramsey Kanaan and just a tiny preview of the Science Fiction in San Francisco crew who are going to be the focus of our next episode. We cover up through page 119 of the 2009 PM Press edition of the book and go deep into the revolutionary philosophies that inspired Fire on the Mountain, the work Terry did as part of the above ground radical movement by editing the Committee's newsletter “Death to the Klan,” and his stint in prison to defiance of a Grand Jury subpoena targeting underground activists connected to militant work with the May 19th Communist Movement. We'll also talk about the importance of imagining better futures and building inclusive communities through a virtual book club of Fire on the Mountain, an alternative history centering around a communist utopia emerging in the U.S. South a hundred years after the success of the Harpers Ferry raid led by John Brown sets off a self-emancipating revolution. As this podcast goes to air we are heading into the Great Amercian total solar eclipse on Monday. As I have been talking about these past several weeks, eclipses are often times of revelation, as well as the hidden secrets rising to light, and are reminiscent of the activity of the human psychological shadow. It is said that these current eclipse have similiar energy to the eclipse of 2006. Where were you then? What was going on in your life? For me.. I was deep in the midst of learning about spirituality and how it was helping me in my life… coming out of divorce.. taking care of myself and my children.. and helping others develop this path of self awareness. No surprise that I find myself deeper into this path.. new teachers.. new understanding through letting go of old patterns and old wounds. I find myself raw and vulnerable similiar to being raw and vulnerale back then yet knowng and sensing big changes are on the horizon.

Patch Adams is a 1998 American biographical comedy-drama film directed by Tom Shadyac and starring Robin Williams in the lead role, Monica Potter, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Bob Gunton, Daniel London, and Peter Coyote. Set in the late 1960s/early 1970s, it is loosely based on the life story of Dr. Hunter "Patch" Adams and the book Gesundheit: Good Health Is a Laughing Matter by Dr. Adams and Maureen Mylander. The film received generally unfavorable reviews from critics, with criticism for the sentimentality and direction, but was a box office success and grossed $202.3 million against a $50–90 million budget.WebsitePatreonTwitterFacebookInstagramRetro Latefee Podcast (@retrolatefeepod) • Instagram photos and videosTikTok ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
Season two of Window Dressing: American Trash and National Treasures begins with the 1988 film Heart of Midnight. In this season I will discuss the women of American culture and cultural products that are either revered or reviled. I will put Lisa Rinna and Joan Crawford at the same level and give films like Vertigo and this episode's Heart of Midnight the same weight. As usual, every component of this podcast is created by me with love and genuine admiration for film and television and the women who make it matter. This week that woman is Jennifer Jason Leigh as Carol playing opposite Peter Coyote as Shapre. Trigger warning on this episode, rape, porn, and brutality run rampant in this film and my discussion of it.

THIS WEEK: Emanuelle in America (1977), Star Of David: Beautiful Girl Hunter (1979), Bitter Moon (1992)VOTE ON THE NAME FOR THIS MONTH'S THEMEANOTHER PATRON REQUEST EPISODE! Theres no better way to kick off November than with a trio of movies that would get a more respectable podcast shamed and criticized into oblivion. Lucky for us, most people don't care about which films we cover and those who do hold us to the lowest of standards. We'll be tackling all the hard hitting questions this week like: Why is the greatest amount of effort Joe D'Amato has ever put into a film a few grainy snippets of people being convincingly tortured? Was David Cronenberg kind of into that shit? Is Star of David mostly anti-semitic or the most anti-semitic? How much does it rule when Peter Coyote nostalgically yearns for Roman Polanski's wife to pee on him?All of these answered AND MORE!Donate to Palestinian Medical Aid Support Optimism Vaccine on Patreon

I'm joined by Nashville's leading film critic, curator and connoisseur Jason Shawhan to discuss THE LEGEND OF BILLIE JEAN. An overtly feminist, covertly queer cult classic from 1985 that deftly explores America's rampant classist bias, unbridled misogyny, protest movements dissolving into marketing opportunities, modern technology's role in amplifying voices of the devalued underclass, the benefits and dangers of our fame-obsessed world and so much more - all wrapped in a a shiny, gorgeously photographed container. Generally dismissed by critics and audiences alike upon initial release, THE LEGEND OF BILLIE JEAN is a true cult classic, beloved by everyone who resonated with another gem of a film discovered by most viewers via home video and cable. Fabulous performances from Helen Slater, Peter Coyote, Keith Gordon, Dean Stockwell and Yeardly Smith (AKA the voice of Bart Simpson and a brilliant score (Pat Benetar's iconic "Invincible" was written expressly for BILLE JEAN and produced by our friend Mike Chapman), this movie's comment on America is as relevant today was it was upon original release .For more Jason Shawhan: https://x.com/jshawhan?s=21&t=2TXy7cSLOHZN-Ef4khov0A http://rebirthoftheflesh.blogspot.com/ Jason & Sam Inglis host FEARLESS PRETENDER- The Only Podcast That Provides Extensive Analysis of Every-Single Film & Television Show Featuring Jennifer Jason-Leigh. https://open.spotify.com/show/17u9DSmsiByQ56LijyERoo Here my guest spot on the episode devoted to the bizarro Rodney Dangerfield classic EASY MONEY https://open.spotify.com/episode/5WVJsIaVmRSx4HfxjtZvm1?si=IRopJVbdQYWytOJ4tWXIGg Participate in future Movie Clubs, support this show and make your life complete by heading to https://www.patreon.com/CraigAndFriends and signing up now! 69. The Power of Words Today's episode is focused on the power that your words have in an organization and as a leader. What you say can have a positive effect on someone, and the opposite is also true. What type of message do you want to send to others in conversations, meetings and presentations? Consider the importance of the words that you use so that you are seen, heard and respected. In this episode: The article written by Scott Mabry called "The Words You Leave Behind" was the catalyst for this topic of the podcast. What are the words that you use and are they painting the portrait that you want to paint about yourself for others? Organizations have words that are unique to the culture and the workplace. Leaders communicate via the words that they use every day – but what message are they sending? A deeper look at what can drive a leader's communication and the power that they have simply by what they say. A look at “The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Freedom” by Don Miguel Ruiz and Peter Coyote and how it plays into understanding the words and actions that you take. Tips on how you can frame what you say in the best way for your perception. Armed Love is a series about the revolutionary subculture of the sixties. Episode one was an interview with Peter Coyote, and episode 2 was a discussion of Charles Manson and the Lyman Family, and episode 3 an interview with Black Mask and Up Against the Wall founder Ben Morea: Part 1, Part 2 More info on the Altlanta Forest: https://defendtheatlantaforest.org/ Follow on Twitter and read their latests essays at Crimethic.com PDF: Jerry Rubin: Do It! Hi there Kim and apparently Melanie who also reads the show notes. These show notes are for you 2 unless someone else wants to show themselves! I will see you at our next secret meeting and I will invite your favorite guest to join us! How about that for a bonus! I wanted today's conversation with Peter Coyote to be evergreen or always relevant whenever you decide to listen to it so I eschewed the normal production elements and news and got right to my chat with the legend. Special thanks to Mark Nolte and his ban City Park in Iowa City who wrote this song for Peter. Please go listen or stream it!
