The Rockettes kicked off a celebrity line-up including Elizabeth Taylor, Liza Minelli, Jimmy Stewart, Al Pacino and Miss Piggy at ‘The Night of 100 Stars', a benefit for the Actors Fund of America recorded on 14th February, 1982 at Radio City Music Hall, New York. A night of sheer glitz and excess, the true tally of stars on-stage totalled 206 - but perhaps that's what you'd expect for $1000 per ticket and a bum-numbing running time of five-and-a-half hours. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly question the star-counting mechanic for the New York Yankees; explain how the assasination of Abraham Lincoln inspired the foundation of the Actor's Fund in 1882; and marvel at the long-windedness of this televised tribute to the charity's centenary… Further Reading: • ‘Bask in the Bewildering '80s Glamour of 'Night of 100 Stars'' (Jezebel, 2016): https://jezebel.com/bask-in-the-bewildering-80s-glamour-of-night-of-100-sta-1759236215/amp • ‘Glamor Glut' (The Washington Post, 1982): https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/lifestyle/1982/02/16/glamor-glut/7ff21880-5540-4c20-acb4-fa5832781184/ • ‘VIDEO: The Night of 100 Stars' (ABC, 1982): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VkgaJobbIPg Love the show? If you have ever listened to the podcast you know that one of my pet peeves is the way older women are represented or rather under represented in mainstream media, unless of course its in ads for retirement plans, meal replacement shakes and bladder leakage products. The common definition of beauty does not include women in their 50's and 60's and beyond. My guest today is on a mission to change that. Robin Bobbe is the founder of Modern Agerer Casting, a casting agency that specializes in finding diverse talent of all backgrounds and ages. After starting a career in the fashion industry as stylist, she then went on the become an actress, a casting director and then a commercial model in her 60's. Confronted by the lack of diversity that the model agencies offered, she armed herself with a polaroid camera and began combing the streets in search of the authenticity that reflected more diverse faces. We chat about: Her experience and insights in the industry from both sides of the camera The importance of challenging societal norms of beauty and relevance. How she captures the power and beauty of older models through their confidence, self acceptance and authenticity. Her process for the many reinventions of her career The importance of constant exploration, creativity and life long learning as the keys to a fulfilling life. There are so many great insights and nuggets of wisdom in this episode. If you've ever thought, even for second, that you'd like to try your hand at modelling no mater how old you are Robin encourages you to take the first step by reaching out to her. ——— Robin Bobbe is the founder of Modern Ager Casting. She has over 40 years of experience working with professional models and actors as well as non-professionals. She has worn many hats during her career in fashion, film and photography. Robin started her career as a stylist in Manhattan in the 1970's. She spent the 80's acting in Los Angeles and the 90's behind the camera as an associate producer of documentaries of which one was nominated for an Academy Award. In 1999 she joined Photo Group a large print advertising production company, as an inhouse producer, but it was clear that casting was her real calling. Street casting became her specialty. She left Photo Group to start her own casting company in 2001 which continues today as ModernagerCasting, stalking her prey wherever she goes. In 2012, through The Actors Fund she started working with artists living with dementia offering creative activities which she continues to do today. She credits her 60's for being her most creative decade yet and come March 30th she's looking forward to seeing what's waiting for her on the other side of 70. https://www.modernagercasting.com/What-We-Do/1

A celebration of all the holiday classics, 'Twas The Night is a feel-good homage to the original poem, set in a world with security alarms, cell phones, and a little Christmas magic. Parents Ian and Margaret are having a serene Christmas night, their two children dreaming of sugar plums in the next room, when a series of noises and crashes cause concern that Margaret's younger brother is playing a holiday prank. But who, really, arose such a clatter? In the end, the whole family remembers that it's never too late to say what you mean and that the spirit of Christmas is stronger than ever. Listeners of 'Twas the Night are encouraged to donate to The Actors Fund, supporting their mission of fostering stability and resiliency, and providing a safety net for performing arts and entertainment professionals over their lifespan. What do you get your reps for the holidays, especially this year? Because it is this year, the year of two strikes, after, let's see, a global pandemic, and a heck of a lot of other things going on in the world, I think we can be assured that it doesn't have to be some momentous gift. So let's say you had a Killer year, maybe in theatrical at the beginning of the year, or you had a killer print year, or a killer modeling year, or a killer commercial or voiceover year, again Wahoo! I want to hear about it because that sounds fabulous. If you did, you can be more generous in what I'm going to suggest. This year, I would go for a card. A card that says something sincere in it about how much you appreciate them sticking by you or how much you appreciate their sense of humor or something genuine. Now, that is if it is a very lean year for you. If it's not been a lean year and you really want to do a little something, I go to my old standard of Amazon gift cards and Starbucks gift cards. I know that's not that imaginative, but honestly, from the casting director's point of view, it's just a token. If you want to take it one step further, then do a little investigating. When you were there, What were they eating? Was it Chipotle? Was it Sweetgreen? Was it McDonald's? Whatever it was, they have a little thing. Maybe you know that they love VR games. If they do, then get them a gift card that's appropriate for that. If you know they love going to movies, get them a movie gift card to a movie theater near their work or their home. You can be imaginative with this. The other thing I recommend is A charity. You can say, listen, in light of this being a crappy year for a lot of people, I wanted to give a little donation to a charity of your choice. Ask them. ASPCA and Women for Women International are the two charities of Acting Business Boot Camp. We give a portion of our proceeds every month to those two charities. Broadway Cares, Equity Fights AIDS, that's always a great one for the industry. The Actors Fund is another charity that's fantastic for the industry. You can do stuff like that, too. I always feel these things are better than alcohol or cookies because then they get to choose and they get to have something that's special for them. And I also love those gifts where somebody gave it a little more thought. Do some homework on this. Think about it. What would your reps really like? And honestly, if it's just a card with something nice, that's perfect. Just take that moment. Stop and take that moment and think about what you most appreciate them. Thank you for noticing me. Thank you for seeing me, seeing my talent, and believing in me.

Ask Me Anything Time Management Class What to get Casting Directors, Managers, and Agents over the holidays. This year I'm suggesting one of two things: a thoughtful gift card or a charity donation. So a thoughtful gift card would be that you contact someone else in the casting office or agency and ask what their fellow employees like. “Hey, are they a Starbucks person, or are they a Costco person? Are they a McDonald's person or a Dunkin Donuts person?” And then, you can send them an electronic gift card. If you're booking a lot. Yes. You want to be thinking more $50, $75, $100. But if you're a new client or you haven't been booking that year, or there's a casting office that has maybe thought of you a few times throughout the year. A simple $20 gift card. A $25 gift card is fine. Defaults: Amazon, you can buy anything there. Starbucks, you can get food, you can get coffee, you can get tea Or, the charity donation, which, again, you could ask someone in the office or even ask that person, “I'd like to make a donation to a charity of your choice this year. Would you please let me know what charity you support?” And then you make a donation in their name. Or you could choose a charity yourself. The Actors Fund or Broadway Cares Equity Fights AIDS are wonderful charities that the industry recognizes. The gifts are just tokens. A well-written card, something that says something from the heart, is also a wonderful, wonderful way for you to show your appreciation. You're not going to buy your way into that casting director's heart. You're not going to buy your way into that agent or manager's heart. You're just genuinely letting them know that you appreciate how they have thought of you this year.
One of the coolest around is my guest on Calling Old Hollywood this week, Actor and Author Darby Hinton. From Wagon Train to Bill Tilghman and the Outlaws, Days of our Lives, Good Guys and Bad Guys, he's done quite alot. Best known though for his role as Israel Boone on Daniel Boone. We filmed this upcoming episode in both video and audio. He was generous to show us film and television memoribilia including the coon skin hat that made his role as Israel Boone so infamous (will be in video). Darby and I talk what it was like growing up on set, his father Actor Ed Hinton, personal stories of Hollywood, westerns, life coaching, Film Festivals, his role in organizations like 'A Minor Consideration' and 'The Entertainment Community Fund' (Formerly the Actors Fund), the future of cinema, Fess Parker, Darby's pet monkey that destroyed Zsa Zsa Gabor's house (yep), and more! Back in 2008, I made the move to New York City to finally pursue my acting career here. And after a couple of years of doing regional work, though, I was looking for more opportunities that could keep me in the city. So I went to the Actors Fund (now called the more generic Entertainment Community Fund and featured on previous episodes), and at that time they offered assistance to actors looking to beef up their non-performing resume. I talked with someone about places I'd work at in the past, and she asked if I had considered approaching non-profit organizations. Of the ones I looked through, the one that stood out to me was a children's charity called Only Make Believe. I sent them an email and setup a time to meet with a woman named Melissa who was in charge of their volunteers at the time. That was in March of 2010, and what began as a few hours here and there of volunteer office help led to part-time work as their Media Consultant and assisting with their gala and other marketing efforts. Learn more about this amazing children's organization: https://www.onlymakebelieve.org And all of it was the idea of one woman: Dena Hammerstein. She started out as a British actress who eventually came to the US, met and married into a famous Broadway family, and began producing shows here in New York. In 1999, Dena established Only Make Believe, and every November since 2001 they have held their annual gala to raise funds and awareness for the work they do. In the last episode you heard from Joe DiPietro about his beginnings with the organization, but today you'll hear from the founder herself in this encore presentation of our conversation back in 2018 for a special segment of this podcast called The Spotlight Series. At the time Dena was still head of the whole organization. We talk about her early years as a TV and film actress in London and then what led her to establish Only Make Believe. Find out a bit more about Dena's early years in TV and film: IMDB Giving Dena a Better Episode When this interview was originally recorded back in 2018, I only had one microphone and guests and myself would sit on either side of that mic for the interviews, so audio quality wasn't that great. For this episode I've been able to go back and improve that audio quality as best I can, thanks in part to the financial support of listeners like you. Get Bonus Episodes by supporting WINMI with a monthly subscription OR Donate to this podcast and help further its production efforts Also in 2020, as the pandemic was upon us and Dena was spending more and more time in London, it seemed the appropriate time for her to step aside. So I've edited this conversation (using better software, thanks again to listener support) as a reminder of her legacy and the important work she has left to a new generation of capable leadership as they carry on Dena's vision for years to come.

Today I'm joined by Michael John Warren to discuss SPRING AWAKENING: THOSE YOU'VE KNOWN 15 years after the smash, Tony-winning Broadway run of “Spring Awakening,” the original cast and creative team reunite for a spectacular, one-night only reunion concert to benefit The Actors Fund. Chronicling their whirlwind journey back to the stage, the film follows the players as they reconnect and rediscover the beauty and timelessness of the hit musical, sharing the show's underdog origins, its path to Tony glory, the universal themes of teenage repression and angst, and the unconventional love story of breakout stars Jonathan Groff and Lea Michele. The documentary pulls back the curtain to showcase the reunited original cast and creative team at rehearsals, in their homes and backstage. The film features electrifying performances from the reunion concert in November 2021, newly filmed interviews, candid archival video and photographs, as well as performance footage from the original 2006 show that went on to sweep the Tonys, winning eight awards, including Best Musical. “Spring Awakening” forever changed the lives of the mostly unknown teenage cast and inspired a generation of fans by laying bare taboo issues of teen love, abortion, abuse, sexual identity and suicide in an unapologetic, edgy rock musical set in the 1890s. HBO Documentary Films' SPRING AWAKENING: THOSE YOU'VE KNOWN , directed by Michael John Warren and produced by RadicalMedia (HBO's “David Byrne's American Utopia”), debuts TUESDAY, MAY 3 (9:00-10:23 p.m. ET/PT) on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/followingfilms/support

We WERE going to call this episode Romantic Shakespeare - but then we realized in a lot of the plays, non-platonic relationships are often UNromantic so.... yeah.So therefore, in this episode, we discuss the believability and viability of the "love" relationships in Shakespeare's plays. Can one really sustain a marriage when you fall in love in less than a page?? Can you have a happy marriage when you have managed to get married by having some whore pretend to be you so your soon to be husband HAS to marry you???It's a conundrum. We discuss.AND!!!! This week the boss stops by to wish us a merry Christmas! Mischief Media's own host of Extraneouses SPN and Steven Universe Leah Cornish joins as we romp and read our way through beloved modern Christmas classic, “The Muppet Christmas Carol.” We lament the lack of award season recognition for both Michael Caine and Frank Oz, discuss Gonzo's fowl habits, and attempt to drive off the haunting image of Christmas Pasts' teeny baby hands from our night terrors.
