Interview with Anne Richmond Boston of Swimming Pool Q's. Anne was born in Louisville, Kentucky. She was a member of the church choir, took violin and ballet lessons all through elementary school. Her father was transferred to Winter Haven, Florida, for one year (where violin and ballet stopped) and then moved the family to Atlanta, Georgia. She was accepted into the high school chorus and was chosen to sing in a special chorus performing Leonard Bernstein's “Chichester Psalms.” Vocal harmonies were something she came to naturally. Perfoming “Going to the Chapel” with a band in the high school talent show was her first experience of being onstage behind a mic. She really dug it. It was about this time that the music of Janis Joplin, Grace Slick, Sandy Denny, Linda Ronstadt, Tammy Wynette, Dolly Parton, Melba Montgomery, Aretha Franklin, Judy Collins, and The Supremes took up residence in her being. She became friends with local Atlanta phenoms Thermos Greenwood (original rock band) and was invited along with a chorus of people to sing on the song “Chocolate City” for their album Pinhead Teddy. Anne was invited to become a member of the newly formed band The Swimming Pool Q's in 1978 and sang on their recordings The Deep End, The Swimming Pool Q's, and Blue Tomorrow. They continue to perform today. As a graphic designer, Anne created much of the early Swimming Pool Q's promotional material, supervised photo sessions, and designed single and album cover packaging. Leaving the Q's in 1987, Anne and her then-husband recorded The Big House of Time which was released on DB Records in 1990. It contained many originals and several cover songs, including “When You Dance” by Neil Young and “Darling Be Home Soon” by John Sebastian. T he follow up was I Should Be Happy. Anne's has had the pleasure of singing either live with, or on recordings by:  Drive-By Truckers, Widespread Panic, Thermos Greenwood, Terry Adams (NRBQ), The Brains, Johnny Jenkins, Marti Jones, Syd Straw, Laurie Sargent, Julie Adams, Kelly Hogan

Patterson Hood grew up in Florence, Alabama — a deeply conservative, Bible Belt town where his father was quietly making history. David Hood was a session bassist for the Muscle Shoals rhythm section, recording with Aretha Franklin, the Rolling Stones, and Wilson Pickett at a time when it wasn't always safe to go to dinner with the artists you were recording with. Patterson learned early not to mention his dad's job at school. When people asked what church his father attended, he changed the subject.Decades later, Patterson co-founded Drive-By Truckers — a band that has spent 25 years wrestling with Southern identity, racism, abuse of power, and what it means to be American. In this conversation, he talks about growing up progressive in the Deep South, why he thinks a Black and white soul band should replace the Confederate flag as the symbol of the South, and what he hopes listeners will make of his songs 20 years from now. David Barbe grew up in Atlanta, Georgia, where he attended Ridgeview High School and began playing in bands during the 1970s. Barbe's parents were influential in his love as music as both his parents, John and Jane Barbe were big band musicians as well as creating Jingles.David Barbe arrived in Athens, Georgia in 1981 to attend the University of Georgia, and stepped straight into a music scene that would help shape his entire life. The move to Athens quickly found Barbe immersed in the creative energy of the music in Athens—playing with local punk bands like Bar-B-Que Killers, Mercyland and later Buzz Hungry . When Mercyland disbanded in 1991, Barbe didn't slow down. While taking the lead in Buzz Hungry, he caught the attention of Bob Mould from the band Husker Du and joined his band Sugar, a band that was part of an explosion of indie alternative rock, helping to shape Sugar's evolving sound before departing in 1995. Years later, that musical connection would come full circle with a reunion performance at the Treasure Island Music Festival in 2009.But one of the most defining turns in Barbe's story happened behind the scenes. A call from John Keane opened the door to studio work—and a whole new creative path. Under Keane's mentorship, Barbe mastered the art of production and engineering, laying the foundation for what would become an extraordinary part of his life, losing count of up to 400 albums he has produced, mixed or engineered. In 1997, he co-founded Chase Park Transduction in Athens, a studio that would become a cornerstone of the city's music legacy. From there, Barbe went on to produce hundreds of records—working with artists like Drive-By Truckers, Deerhunter, The Glands, Amy Ray, k.d. lang, and R.E.M.. Somewhere along the way, the number of albums he's worked on climbed into the hundreds—so many, he's stopped counting. And as if that weren't enough, Barbe continues to shape the next generation of artists as director of the Music Business Certificate Program at the University of Georgia—bringing his journey full circle, right back to where it all began.Barbe, a firm believer of family first — and his wife, Amy, have three children — a daughter and 2 sons. . He is a past president of the Athens-Clarke County Little League baseball league and has managed his sons' all-star teams to several city championships.Barbe's name has been equated as one of the best producers in Athens, attracting bands from all over. He has been a stronghold for musicians here for a long time and I don't see him stopping any time soon.Barbe gave me the opportunity to ask him about things he doesn't necessarily get a chance to answer often. And his story could not be more relevant today with the advent of LLMs and AI threatening to take people's jobs and change society forever. This week we take a look at some great renditions of his tale from; Johnny Cash, Lead Belly, Rhiannon Giddens/Justin Robinson, Woody Guthrie, Charley Crockett and Drive-By Truckers. It is difficult for me to characterize what Scott, Elizabeth, and myself discussed on the latest LGM podcast, better known as “the tightest 117 minutes in the history of podcasting.” Our writ was to discuss the latest Paranoid Style album, “Known Associates,” as well as to talk about Elizabeth’s contribution of liner notes to The Replacements’ Let it Be: Deluxe Edition and we did indeed discuss these things, but there were digressions. Some questions that emerged and re-emerged over the course of the pod: What is your theory of album sequencing, in terms of where you put the best song and where you put the hardest song? Is this album the Paranoid Style’s entry into the Yacht Rock genre? Does the presence of a saxophone necessarily imply Yacht Rock, or is some sort of boat reference also required? Is Van Halen Yacht Rock? Let’s phone a friend. Do you have strong feelings about the remastering of Tim? Elizabeth would like to hear from you. Are you offended by aspersions against Soul Asylum? Did Rod Stewart sell out? Is selling out even bad? How does Donald Trump feel about Kiss? What’s the deal with authenticity? What would say to Prince if he were using the urinal next to you? What would you say to Jon Langford? Would you like to hear a funny story about Keith Richards and drugs? Or one about Wussy? Did SEK go on a bender with Keith Richards? Did RFK Jr.? What will it be like the day that Sir Paul McCartney leaves us? A bunch of songs about Canadian songwriters, where Gordon Lightfoot is asked to be ranked by some metric? Is Gordon Lightfoot Yacht Rock? Is any expression of admiration for the Drive By Truckers excessive? The answer is no. Are the DBTs Yacht Rock? What is the demographic profile of an LGM podcast listener? Would we mind more of Elizabeth’s review of rock n’ roll books? Could Elizabeth be lured to Lexington for the Keeneland Spring Meet? Could this podcast have been more effectively edited for content and coherence? Possibly. Transcript is here. "I Should Be Happy" Singer/keyboardist Anne Richmond Boston showed up on the musical timeline in the late '70s when she joined the Atlanta indie rock outfit The Swimming Pool Q's. Before the goldrush of bands like R.E.M., Soul Asylum, O Positive, Big Dipper and Poi Dog Pondering signing to major labels, The Swimming Pool Q's kind of led the way, inking deals in the mid-'80s with A&M and Capitol Records. They put out five marvelous albums, including Blue Tomorrow and The Deep End, toured with Devo and The Police and garnered a reputation for being a spot-on live act, their brand of idiosyncratic pop filled with jittery rhythms, sterling sax fills, jangling guitars and sonorous vocals. Richmond Boston left the band in 1989 but roared right back with her 1990 debut solo album Big House Of Time. Filled with soaring originals like Dreaming and covers of numbers by Neil Young, John Hiatt and The Lovin' Spoonful, Big House Of Time made a huge splash at college radio. And then? Well, Richmond Boston designed album covers, worked in graphic arts, sang with The Drive By Truckers and Widespread Panic and rejoined the Q's. And that was that. But what about the rumored follow-up to Big House Of Time? Well, it was recorded and sitting on a shelf in a closet in Richmond Boston's house. Titled I Should Be Happy, her sophomore album was worth the wait. A riveting collection that's filled with meditative and melodic numbers, I Should Be Happy is contemplative and moving and finds Richmond Boston tackling the big questions with peerless harmonic grace.  www.annerichmondboston.bandcamp.com www.bombshellradio.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.alexgreenbooks.com Threads + BLUESKY + IG: @emberspodcast editor@stereoembersthepodcast.com

Tad Overbaugh is one of Boston's finest songwriters — criminally under the radar, but not for much longer. Tad crafts a sound that's been beautifully described as "alt-country music viewed from Boston," a gritty, lived-in blend of roots rock, Americana, and dive-bar pop that draws comparisons to The Replacements, Drive-By Truckers, and Steve Earle. It was fellow Boston-based songwriter Tom Baker — a man whose taste we've long admired — who essentially grabbed us by the collar and told us just how good this guy is. As NPR tells it, Drive-By Truckers' "examination of the Southern psyche is a microcosm of how Americans respond to triumph and tragedy," but their early career incline couldn't have looked more shattered behind the scenes. The band was close to imploding while crafting 2001's Southern Rock Opera, through a heatwave in a warehouse, for a paltry $7,000. But when the time came to make their follow-up, Decoration Day — in vocalist/guitarist Patterson Hood's words, "the most openly beloved thing we've ever done" — there was new fuel in the band's tank, with the addition of Jason Isbell, and a real studio and budget to help dial in their vision. Hood recalls it being his funnest recording experience to date, and the final product ended up catapulting the group to cult-like status. Today, on his second visit to Vinyl Emergency, Hood discusses the recently released 4LP Definitive Decoration Day box set, and why he feels the more his band is pushed, the better they become. It's a Thanksgiving treat! There's a new episode of Empty Checking! In advance, I ended up doing something else and did NOT get the nap I was hoping for throughout the episode...but at least I got to talk about music from Cheap Trick, Envy of None, Drive-By Truckers, and Hayley Williams, then about the last Downton Abbey movie, Frasier, and the King of the Hill revival! I had fun doing this one, even though it was willfully rushed and could've been time spent napping. Hope it makes your Thanksgiving Day/weekend pass a little more happily. In addition, this law firm sponsors the popular LawCall show on WAAY/ABC 31 on Sunday nights at 10:30pm.   As you'll hear, Heath has been working at this same law firm for almost two decades, following  a fortuitous concert featuring the Drive By Truckers. As a long-time musician, Heath and I also discussed Muscle Shoals and its place in American musical history.  As an aside, here is a podcast with attorney Rick Hall whose father founded the Fame Music Studio in the Shoals.  In addition to his interest in music, Heath also has a background in anthropology and archaeology, so much so that he got his degree in it and worked in the field for several years before going to law school.  He also received a Master's degree in Environmental Management at the same time he studied for his law degree.  Heath is as he appears on LawCall – affable, approachable, funny and smart.  It is no wonder that he has a lot of prospective clients seeking his representation! I enjoyed getting to know Heath's history on this episode of the podcast.

This November, I'm going out on tour with my friend Patterson Hood. We're calling it the Devil in the Details tour, and we're gonna be appearing on the same stage at the same time playing our songs with one auxiliary musician, a guy named Ben Hackett. This tour is gonna be magical, and I'm already excited about it. In fact, I'm so excited about it that I decided to dig into the vaults and re-air the first-ever episode of That's How I Remember It, which featured a conversation between myself and, you guessed it, Patterson Hood. So if you can, I hope you'll come hang out in one of these places: Seattle, Portland, Bend, San Francisco, Santa Cruz, Los Angeles, San Diego, Phoenix, Santa Fe, Dallas, and Austin. The devil's in the details indeed. Get more details of the dates at craigfinn.net. This episode originally ran on June 8, 2022. For the first episode of That's How I Remember It, I spoke to Patterson Hood, one of my all-time favorite songwriters. Patterson's work with the Drive By Truckers has examined life in the Southern USA and beyond, lyrically tearing down old monuments while constructing new ones to more worthy recipients. We talked about turning memories into mythology, honoring deceased friends, and how his classic song "18 Wheels of Love" might be built on a shaky foundation. We also reminisce a bit on the Drive By Truckers/The Hold Steady “Rock and Roll Means Well” Tour from 2008. Huge thanks to Patterson for being my first guest. I'll be talking to Brian Koppelman, Fred Armisen, and other great guests in weeks to come, so please subscribe and keep listening to That's How I Remember It.

We're talking about Cole Taylor, former tour manager for the Drive-By Truckers, lifelong wrestling fanatic, and the mastermind behind Classic City Wrestling — the wildest mashup of rock and wrestling the South has ever seen.Cole took his love of suplexes and soundchecks and created a full-blown spectacle where you can catch live bands between body slams. It's like if Monday Night Raw and a dive bar had a beautiful, chaotic baby — and yes, it all happens right here in Athens. He'll tell us how it started, how it's going, and how he somehow turned a blown-out knee into a rallying cry for an entire community. Hint: it involves duct tape, a lot of heart, and probably some ibuprofen. We also had a surprise guest on zoom from the WWF, WWE, and WCW days. We're going a little bit country again this week on the Talkhouse Podcast—gotta keep you on your toes—with a pair of Nashville singer-songwriters who share a sensibility, some history, and sobriety, as you'll hear. One of them, Margo Price, you've hopefully heard on the podcast before; the other, Lilly Hiatt, is a first-timer, but you'd never know it. Price was a critical darling right out of the gate, and for good reason: Her debut album, released by Jack White's Third Man Records, kicked some new life into country by looking both backward and forward. Since then, Price has released a series of great records as well as a phenomenal memoir called Maybe We'll Make It. Last time she was on this podcast, Price was talking to former Tom Petty sideman Mike Campbell about a collaboration they did. That's just the tip of the iceberg, and as you'll hear in this chat, she's got new music cooking, though nothing has been officially announced yet. Lilly Hiatt has a famous last name in the music world—her dad is John Hiatt—but she's cut her own path through Nashville, too. She rides a more adventurous side of the musical line, getting almost alt-rocky at some points. She's opened for everyone from Drive-By Truckers to Hiss Golden Messenger to the Mountain Goats, which should tell you something right there. This week Hiatt is releasing a new album called Forever, which is the result of some serious self-reflection and a different, entirely scrapped set of songs. The album was mixed by Paul Kolderie, known for working on early Radiohead and Pixies records. Maybe that'll also tell you something. Check out “Kwik-E-Mart” right here. In this lively conversation, Price and Hiatt talk about getting back into the game, about working with their musician husbands—Jeremy Ivey and Coley Hinson, respectively—and they talk at length about getting and staying sober in a town where that's not always so easy. I had never heard Nashville described as a “drinking town with a music problem” before. Enjoy. This week, we're joined by musician & arranger Kyleen King. As a backing performer for such acts as Brandi Carlile, The Decemberists & Drive-By Truckers, Kyleen picked a film that strikes close to home, 20 Feet From Stardom. We discuss what it feels like to serve other musician's visions even if they can't articulate what they want, zoning out on stage, pre-show rituals and superstitions, the performative elements of being a backing musician, how the film helped Kyleen want to go into mental health and social work for musicians, Darleen Love, the devaluation of music, Lisa Fisher, hearing Gimme Shelter for the first time in Adventures In Babysitting, the dismissiveness of being a backing singer by Mick Jagger in the film, making bonehead mistakes on stage, how to sing harmony parts, The Blossoms, Ray Charles, the difficulties of forming words while being on tour and more.So take another bow at the edge of the stage on this week's episode of Revolutions Per Movie!!!KYLEEN KING:https://maestramusic.org/profile/kyleen-king/  REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE:Host Chris Slusarenko (Eyelids, Guided By Voices, owner of Clinton Street Video rental store) is joined by actors, musicians, comedians, writers & directors who each week pick out their favorite music documentary, musical, music-themed fiction film or music videos to discuss. Steven and Ian open today's episode with a quick Sportscast about the World Series and the Yankees fan who almost ripped Mookie Betts' arm off. Bad fans is actually an overarching theme of the show — the guys start with the upcoming election, and whether we're headed for a wave of anti-PC entertainment if Trump wins. Then they address this week's music-critic controversy involving a bad review of the new Halsey album, and the predictable freakout from chronically online fans. After that, they check in on the Fantasy Albums Draft and talk about the latest from Mount Eerie as well as Phil Elverum's career with The Microphones. Then they do a "Scene Report" segment on recent concerts by Knocked Loose and Drive-By Truckers. In the mailbag, the guys are asked about "time and place" bands, i.e. acts that were set up to make one perfect album and nothing else. Finally, in Recommendation Corner, Ian talks about the emo band Ben Quad while Steven endorses Philly power band 2nd Grade.New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday.
