Drive-By Truckers co-founder Patterson Hood chats about his band, the evolution of his songwriting process, and his most recent solo album.PART ONEWater. Bed. Rock!!!PART TWOOur in-depth conversation with Patterson HoodABOUT PATTERSON HOODMuscle Shoals, Alabama, native Patterson Hood is best known, along with Mike Cooley, as the co-founder of the band Drive-By Truckers. Drawing from a range of rock and country influences, the group emerged from the Athens, Georgia, music scene in the mid-1990s, releasing their debut album, Gangstabilly, in 1988. Following the success of their third album, Southern Rock Opera, Drive-By Truckers were named Band of the Year by No Depression magazine in 2002. Jason Isbell joined the group for the acclaimed albums Decoration Day, The Dirty South, and A Blessing and a Curse. Following Isbell's departure, the album Brighter Than Creation's Dark became Drive-By Truckers' first album to reach the Top 40 on the Billboard 200 chart. Subsequent albums The Big To-Do, Go-Go Boots, English Oceans, and American Band all reached the Top 40, as well as the top ten on Billboard's US Rock chart. In all, the band has released fourteen studio albums. In addition to his work with Drive-By Truckers, Hood has released four solo albums. The latest, released in February, is called Exploding Trees & Airplane Screams.
Kentucky born singer, songwriter Kimberly Morgan York. York has spent her lifetime on the road making music. She started performing publicly when she was a mere three years old, travelled and played with Drive By Truckers, and eventually developed her own excellent material. Critics call her one-part Wanda Jackson and the other part Dolly Parton. We call her Kimberly Morgan York.
When you're a pro wrestler and you're "making towns," that means you're on the road, hitting up all the cities and towns in which you perform. The same goes for touring musicians. On this episode, Andrew is joined by returning guest and musician Jon Hernandez (Voices of Wrestling, Timeshares) to play songs that have cities and towns in the title. Artists played include Billy Joel, The Kinks, Drive-By Truckers, Fountains of Wayne, N.W.A, Lucinda Williams, Randy Newman, Simple Minds, and many more. Man, this was fun. I've been on a Drive-By Truckers kick since the holidays since I decided to do a full discography listen as a way of pregaming for seeing the band for the first time in early February. That show was pure awesomeness. This was one of our Patreon Revisitor shows with Kevin Peters picking the album. We asked Stephen Deusner, author of Where the Devil Don't Stay: Traveling the South with the Drive-By Truckers (American Music Series): Deusner, Stephen: 9781477318041: Amazon.com: Books to join us. We're going a little bit country again this week on the Talkhouse Podcast—gotta keep you on your toes—with a pair of Nashville singer-songwriters who share a sensibility, some history, and sobriety, as you'll hear. One of them, Margo Price, you've hopefully heard on the podcast before; the other, Lilly Hiatt, is a first-timer, but you'd never know it. Price was a critical darling right out of the gate, and for good reason: Her debut album, released by Jack White's Third Man Records, kicked some new life into country by looking both backward and forward. Since then, Price has released a series of great records as well as a phenomenal memoir called Maybe We'll Make It. Last time she was on this podcast, Price was talking to former Tom Petty sideman Mike Campbell about a collaboration they did. That's just the tip of the iceberg, and as you'll hear in this chat, she's got new music cooking, though nothing has been officially announced yet. Lilly Hiatt has a famous last name in the music world—her dad is John Hiatt—but she's cut her own path through Nashville, too. She rides a more adventurous side of the musical line, getting almost alt-rocky at some points. She's opened for everyone from Drive-By Truckers to Hiss Golden Messenger to the Mountain Goats, which should tell you something right there. This week Hiatt is releasing a new album called Forever, which is the result of some serious self-reflection and a different, entirely scrapped set of songs. The album was mixed by Paul Kolderie, known for working on early Radiohead and Pixies records. Maybe that'll also tell you something. Check out “Kwik-E-Mart” right here. In this lively conversation, Price and Hiatt talk about getting back into the game, about working with their musician husbands—Jeremy Ivey and Coley Hinson, respectively—and they talk at length about getting and staying sober in a town where that's not always so easy. I had never heard Nashville described as a “drinking town with a music problem” before. Enjoy. This week, we're joined by musician & arranger Kyleen King. As a backing performer for such acts as Brandi Carlile, The Decemberists & Drive-By Truckers, Kyleen picked a film that strikes close to home, 20 Feet From Stardom. We discuss what it feels like to serve other musician's visions even if they can't articulate what they want, zoning out on stage, pre-show rituals and superstitions, the performative elements of being a backing musician, how the film helped Kyleen want to go into mental health and social work for musicians, Darleen Love, the devaluation of music, Lisa Fisher, hearing Gimme Shelter for the first time in Adventures In Babysitting, the dismissiveness of being a backing singer by Mick Jagger in the film, making bonehead mistakes on stage, how to sing harmony parts, The Blossoms, Ray Charles, the difficulties of forming words while being on tour and more.So take another bow at the edge of the stage on this week's episode of Revolutions Per Movie!!!KYLEEN KING:https://maestramusic.org/profile/kyleen-king/ REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE:Host Chris Slusarenko (Eyelids, Guided By Voices, owner of Clinton Street Video rental store) is joined by actors, musicians, comedians, writers & directors who each week pick out their favorite music documentary, musical, music-themed fiction film or music videos to discuss. It's not often Rolling Stone compares a singer-songwriter to John Prine. But they did just that when they heard “Steelhead Trout” by Margo Cilker. The Oregon-based artist's first two albums have turned her into an emerging star in the Americana music scene. Pohorylle, her debut, was so good, the UK Americana Music Association nominated it for Album of the Year alongside Brandi Carlile, Robert Plant & Allison Kraus and Charley Crockett. She went on tour with Drive-By Truckers and Hayes Carll. Her sophomore album, Valley of Heart's Delight, is better. Not just by our estimation, but every music publication that's reviewed it says so. The songs are deeper, more introspective, and perhaps more universal. Cilker joined us for a chat from her Snake River Valley ranch recently to talk about songwriting, her success, and what the future holds for her music. She and Francesca connected at a performance over the summer and had a conversation about the song and fish that brought about the Prine comparisons. Needless to say, we had a fun conversation. Spencer Thomas is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist based in Athens, Georgia. He also plays keys for the beloved cosmic jamericana touring band Futurebirds. His new record, The Joke of Life, is shot through with contributions from members of My Morning Jacket, Drive-By Truckers, Futurebirds annd — it's been getting a lot of play at the Lenker house. Listen above, scroll down to watch on YouTube. But for a few short texts, Spencer and I hadn't met until he pulled up in front in front of my joint in East Nashville. He'd had a long drive so we took a walk around the block to catch up, break the ice and enjoy the perfect fall weather. Once we started talking we didn't stop. It was almost incidental, turning the mics on.We riffed on his early and present influences — Warren Zevon's name is an appropriate drop here — as well as the reasoning behind his decision to move to Athens — Athens, Georgia — during the pandemic. When I asked Why not Nashville? we charged into a chapter on the plusses and minuses living in a talent hotspot. That he chose an independent incubation makes sense when you listen to his music. You can't make a record like The Joke of Life in Nashville.Even though I've lived here almost two decades, my own formative years as an artist were spent well away from commercial centers (shout out to Bellingham, Washington) — great for cultivating an individual voice, but maybe you sell more records (or streams I guess) the closer you snuggle up to the money teat.Whatever the metric, Spencer and I tend toward the being apart, which is probably why I enjoyed this conversation so much. There was a lot of dishing on favorite bands — Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Dawes — and a thruline of mutual revelry in the joy of making art for its own sake.We got so carried away talking and listening that I nearly forgot to ask him to play my favorite song from his record, Little Gold. Glad to say we got it in there.Spencer is having a real artistic moment. You get the feeling that — after ten years of trying stuff, making up songs alone and with kindred, looking for his own orbit in the music of the spheres, he's finally hitting on something. Teetering on the fulcrum of his own invention. It felt good for me to catch him mid-stroke on an upward swing. On this day of thanks I want to thank YOU for being part of this Morse Code Community. Ours is a motley collective and I wouldn't have it any other way. I love you guys so much. As Big Tech and Big Money and Bigness in general continue their march on our little patch of sacred humanity, I'm here for you, the artist. I have been in love my whole life with grouchy authors, unknown poets, quiet folksingers, radiant actors, the horse whisperers of culture, all, these fringey wonders who prioritize self-expression over self. My purpose for Morse Code is to celebrate you, inspire you, encourage you to thrash around inside yourself and see what's going on in there. The guests on this show are doing it. You can too. Personally, whether I'm writing a song or a short story or making a film, I'm in the meaning business. And meaning isn't something you find, once and for all. You discover a little bit more, every day. But only if you try.If you get something out of the Morse Code Podcast, please like and subscribe on your favorite listening platform, follow us on IG, and if you have a sec, write us a five star review on apple podcasts. My guest this week is the one and only Jay Gonzalez. Jay is a longtime "townie" here in Athens, GA, and is grateful to call Athen's home. His gratitude extends to what he calls "the luckiest job he's ever had" — being the keyboardist for the band Drive-By Truckers. That lucky job takes him on the road all over the U.S. and across the pond to many European countries. When he's not on the road, Jay has a unique knack for performing cover songs that will surprise and excite you. You may find yourself dancing and singing the night away. He's put together a new band that takes these covers to a whole new level. No matter where you see Jay, he'll bring back memories for some and a music history lesson for others.Jay talked about his love of Athens, his family, and his experience as a member of Drive-By Truckers. Steven and Ian open today's episode with a quick Sportscast about the World Series and the Yankees fan who almost ripped Mookie Betts' arm off. Bad fans is actually an overarching theme of the show — the guys start with the upcoming election, and whether we're headed for a wave of anti-PC entertainment if Trump wins. Then they address this week's music-critic controversy involving a bad review of the new Halsey album, and the predictable freakout from chronically online fans. After that, they check in on the Fantasy Albums Draft and talk about the latest from Mount Eerie as well as Phil Elverum's career with The Microphones. Then they do a "Scene Report" segment on recent concerts by Knocked Loose and Drive-By Truckers. In the mailbag, the guys are asked about "time and place" bands, i.e. acts that were set up to make one perfect album and nothing else. Finally, in Recommendation Corner, Ian talks about the emo band Ben Quad while Steven endorses Philly power band 2nd Grade.New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. In this episode about 50% of the things I talk about aren't in the photo because that's how streaming media works! In which The Curmudgeons discuss the awesome power and influence of one of the innovators of the Southern thing, as The Drive-By Truckers refer to it. Lynyrd Skynyrd remains one of the most underrated rock bands of all time, a condition that is partially its own fault, given how it has tied itself in its most recent form to the worst of old Southern stereotypes. But there's no denying that the band's patented three-guitar assault, soulful songwriting and penchant for being the thinking man's rednecks produced a sterling catalog of work during the 1970s. We revisit the five albums of the Ronnie Van Zant era during this episode and place the band in a well-deserved, warm, positive spotlight. On this West Virginia Morning, people have always used music to do everything from soothe children to sleep to revving up the crowd for the big game, but it can do so much more. For Inside Appalachia, Folkways Reporter Liz Pahl learned about the healing power of old-time music when she visited a weekly jam session at the home of a couple in Athens, Ohio. The post The Power Of Old-Time Music And Drive-By Truckers Have Our Song Of The Week, This West Virginia Morning appeared first on West Virginia Public Broadcasting.
This episode first ran on August 28, 2022.For music critic Stephen Deusner, songwriters fall into one of two camps. There are the ones who have something they want to tell you, and then there are the ones who want to figure something out. For him, the longevity of the Drive-By Truckers comes from their residence in the second camp. For decades now, they've been writing smart, complex songs whose characters add complexity to our picture of rural America, especially the South. Stephen's book about the Truckers, Where the Devil Don't Stay: Traveling the South with the Drive-By Truckers, was published in the fall of 2021, and is now on its second printing. On today's episode of Inner States, we talk about the South, Southern Rock, rockets, the masculinity of Jimmy Carter, and, of course, the Truckers.Music ReviewAfter our conversation with Stephen Deusner, Adriane Pontecorvo reviews Private Space, the latest album from Durand Jones and the Indications. The band started almost by accident in Bloomington, Indiana. The second track on Private Space, “Witchoo,” ended up on Barack Obama's best-of list for 2021.MusicOur theme song is by Amy Oelsner and Justin Vollmar. We have additional music from the artists at Universal Production Music.

Over the past few years, Milwaukee's Ladybird have been refining their sound on stages all over town and with the release of their debut album Amy Come On Home, it's clear that all hard work has paid off. With roots firmly and unashamedly planted in the sounds of Uncle Tupelo and Drive-By Truckers, and a wit that echoes the work of John Prine, the four-piece outfit is just the shot in the arm that alt-country has been waiting for. On this edition of Discologist, Eduardo and Kevin are chatting with chief songwriter and lead singer Pete McDermott about his band, their brand-new album, and much, much more. .------We're able to bring you great conversations like this and more because of your generous support.
