Down to the Sea in Ships).

Happy New Year! Shoot off the fireworks, toot the noisemakers, and make yourself a nice plate of black-eyed peas, collard greens, and cornbread. Do you have any resolutions this year? A word or mantra for the year? No? Well, you're in luck. We're here to help with that by way of four movie recommendations. Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)First up is the 1986 John Hughes comedy classic, Ferris Bueller's Day Off. The real righteous dudes in the audience will know why this film has a great movie mantra, but if you don't, you're in luck! We'll tell you all about it in today's show. Galaxy Quest (1999)Next is the 1999 love letter to Star Trek, Galaxy Quest. This comedy is a wonderful send-up of classic Star Trek, but is also a fascinating meta-commentary on stardom, fandom, and geek culture. By Grabthar's Hammer, you best pick this one up for another fantastic movie mantra. It's a Wonderful Life (1946)Frank Capra's 1946 film, It's a Wonderful Life, is a timeless Christmas classic, but it's got one of the best movie mantras in history. Starring Jimmy Stewart, Donna Reed, Henry Travers, and Lionel Barrymore, this drama still rings true today and is worth watching as we start the new year. Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989)We close our movie mantras this week with another comedy, 1989's Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure. While yes, the tagline reads, “History's about to be rewritten by two guys who can't spell,” this is a comedy that still writes a wonderful movie mantra. Filled with cameos from comedians, rock stars, and more, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure is a delightful sci-fi comedy. Strange things will be afoot at the Video Store if you don't pick this one up. From all of us here at the Video Store Podcast, we hope your new year is a great one. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work. Hello everyone! This is a special episode of The Flower Podcast. This year we're continuing a tradition that started last year with sharing something from our family's archives. My Dad for many years has collected a wide range of old time radio shows. His collection is made up of over 30,000 different shows and of course there are several Christmas specials. So we're excited to reshare this condensed version of Charles Dickens Classic, “A Christmas Carol” again this year. The book was originally published back in 1843 and has been a holiday classic for many years. This radio show originally aired on Christmas Day back in 1949 starring Lionel Barrymore. We've included some of the original commercials thrown in for fun. This week isn't about flowers, but the holiday's, family, and friends. We'll be taking a break for a several weeks as we prepare for 2025. Until then I hope you enjoy this special episode. Everyone at The Flower Podcast wishes you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Step back in time with Vintage Classic Radio's presentation of the "Lux Radio Theatre" episode, "Christmas in July," originally aired on June 26, 1944. This episode is a delightful radio adaptation of the 1940 film of the same name, infused with an added sprinkle of Christmas charm unique to Lux. On this special evening, Lionel Barrymore steps in for the usual host Cecil B. DeMille, bringing with him the spirit of Christmas, reminiscent of his roles as the mean-spirited Mr. Potter in "It's A Wonderful Life" and the annual Scrooge on radio versions of "A Christmas Carol." The plot centers around Jimmy MacDonald, portrayed by the charismatic Dick Powell, who believes he has struck it rich by winning a slogan-writing contest. Overjoyed, he proposes to his girlfriend, Betty Casey, played by the enchanting Linda Darnell, and begins to spend his supposed winnings. His boss, Mr. Shindel, acted by Charles Winninger, is so impressed by Jimmy's newfound confidence that he offers him a promotion. The story takes a comedic turn as the community rallies around Jimmy's good fortune, only to face the awkward revelation that his win was nothing but a practical joke. This episode also features performances from Raymond Walburn as the mischievous Dr. Maxford and William Demarest who delivers a touch of humor as Mr. Bildocker. Whether you're rediscovering this classic or tuning in for the first time, "Christmas in July" promises a mix of humor, heartache, and holiday spirit, offering a poignant exploration of dreams, love, and community spirit. Jimmy Stewart wasn't a big star yet when he worked with Frank Capra for the first time in this picture. No matter. You Can't Take It With You belongs to the top-billed Jean Arthur and especially Lionel Barrymore anyway. A word that didn't come up in Ryan's solo show here is "screwball", although this Best Picture winner is clearly working in that genre. The flick just didn't make this fellow laugh. Of course, director Capra won his 3rd Oscar in just 5 years for this effort...and all 3 were screwball comedies. The man was in his element. In this episode, we talk about the 4th Academy Awards held in 1931. Cimarron won for Best Picture. 93 years later do we still think that was the best production? Lionel Barrymore won for Best Actor for A Free Soul while Marie Dressler won for Best Actress. We talk about those categories as well. We just have a little fun talking about what other productions or performers got overlooked. Click and listen!

MERRY CHRISTMAS! It's that one and only day. Seems like people are mad as hell leading up to this day and can't drive for shit but once the day gets here then it all feels all right. We culminate in our theme of THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR with this ultimate Christmas Classic. Some might say that having this movie as your favorite Christmas movie is perhaps typical. Cliche. But it's much more typical to proclaim it as typical because this is one of the most anti-cynical movies ever made. It wasn't even a hit in its time. Not until around the 70s did it truly become iconic holiday fare. It's a heavy hitter that stands the test of time for a reason. Of course, we're talking about Frank Capra's 1946 classic “It's A Wonderful Life” starring Jimmy Stewart, Donna Reed, Lionel Barrymore & Henry Travers. Bob & Angela actually saw it in the theater as is the annual tradition of the Belcourt to show it during this time every year. There's not much more you can say about it (we still say a lot) but maybe we can inspire you to relive it if it's been a minute. Y'know we get choked up. Merry Christmas and a Happy New year. Hello everyone! This is a special episode of The Flower Podcast. Often during this time of year we replay past episodes of our podcast, but this year I would like to share something from our family's archives. My Dad for many years has collected a wide range of old time radio shows. His collection is made up of over 30,000 different shows and of course there are several Christmas specials. Since Christmas is one week away, we thought it would be fun to share this condensed version of Charles Dickens Classic, “A Christmas Carol,” The book was originally published back in 1843 and has been a holiday classic for many years. This radio show was aired on Christmas Day back in 1949 starring Lionel Barrymore. We've included some of the original commercials thrown in for fun. This week isn't about flowers, but the holiday's, family, and friends. We'll be taking a break for a several weeks as we prepare for our new season in 2024. Until then I hope you enjoy this special episode. Everyone at The Flower Podcast wants you to have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
