As Stephen Lease, CEO/Co-Founder of goodr, notes, he's a high achiever at this point in his life—but by all accounts, it wasn't a linear journey. After surviving high school and founding five failed companies, he's now the merry leader of goodr, our favorite makers of affordable, functional, and fun sunglasses. His lightbulb moment came when he was going for a run and realized that all the sunglasses out there were overengineered and still totally ugly (not acceptable for a guy as fashion-forward as Stephen, as you'll see in the YouTube version of this podcast). But beyond sunglasses, goodr is known for their company culture, which Stephen and I dive into as well. Goodr grew a ton during the pandemic (remember, everyone was running all the time, and we needed cheap sunglasses). Stephen explains how he evolved goodr's strong company culture and scrappy mentality as they scaled, plus the role deck and feedback loops he wisely built into the company's structure right from the beginning. And as for Stephen's goals? For his past goals, he talks about his love of a process goal and how he's integrated that into various running goals and push-up goals that he lovingly ropes his friends and co-workers into. And for the future, he's working on building a way to work remotely for a month at a time from an international city, and Stephen also expands on why he's learning to play the ukelele. About Stephen Lease, CEO/Co-Founder of goodr: Stephen's spirit animal is an octopus, he's soul-bonded with a basset hound, and he is 16% flamingo. He's currently the CEO (Chief Executive Octopus) of the sunglasses brand goodr and the co-host of the CULTURE goodr Podcast. Since Stephen co-founded goodr in 2015 (his sixth company), goodr has grown to over 75 employees, is sold in over 3,000 doors worldwide, and has won numerous awards, including “Gear of the Year” by Runner's World Magazine, and “Best Places to Work” by Inc. Magazine. He would love it if it were due to his brand-building knowledge and emotional intelligence, but it's mostly due to surrounding himself with people smartr, nicr, and funnr than him. Today is a very special show, as you know our host Stephen (Stirvin) has always had a passion for entertainment (especially acting) and that all started when he was 12 through a wonderful show based out of and on the beautiful area of north east Georgia called Sautee. The show ran until 2013 and was a very important part of the community for all those years. This weekend its coming back for a reunion show July 17th and 18th. Since Stephen has moved from the area he couldn't be a part of the show, but there's one thing he could do, get a small group of the headwaters talent and crew together for a catch up interview on shows past and what to expect from the reunion show this weekend! It was a blast getting to see all these old friends and I hope you enjoy getting to know a little bit more about the project that brought a community together all those years ago and continues to do so. Tickets are running out so don't miss your chance to see the Headwaters Reunion Concert: www.snca.org --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/the-confound-millennial/message
During the race riots in Charlottesville and Boston, white supremacists repeatedly described themselves as “Christian” and “Conservative.” As Stephen contends in this podcast, nothing could be further from white supremacist philosophy than true Christianity and true Conservatism. Since Stephen considers himself both a Christian and a Conservative, he pushes back against racists kidnapping these two [read more]

At the Winter Olympic Games in South Korea in 2018, Norway earned 39 total medals setting a record for the Winter Games. Many stories were written in the US press about how Norway became so successful. In this podcast I discuss Norwegian sports culture with Stephen Seiler, PhD. Stephen is an American sport scientist who has lived in Norway for over 20 years. He offers his perspective on how Norway goes about developing athletes, the truth about keeping score in youth sports, funding and team culture. Stephen has been working as a programmer, architect and manager for the last 12 years so he has a strong bias towards helping junior programmers and software development teams improve and perform to the best of their ability. He discusses the ins and outs of being a top programmer, gives helpful tips for future and current programmers, managers and entrepreneurs as well as letting us in on how he has learnt from past experiences, to become more and more successful. Since Stephen was young he has always preferred teaching himself, rather than having a structured syllabus. This formed an obsession for constantly doing research and finding answers to the complicated things in life. Over time he noticed that he was forming connections and finding patterns in unrelated fields and using knowledge he gained from studying the rudiments of things like cognitive psychology when trying to figure out why he was seeing certain behaviours in the teams that he worked in. Stephen is interested in communicating and applying those underlying principles and connections in a way that is useful to the teams he works in. Stephen enjoys to focus on underlying principles and not technologies.
During a recent conversation about social media, my friend, Stephen Hardiman, started to talk about storytelling as a business tool. It was one of those times when I cut people off and tell them to save it for when the tape is rolling. Since Stephen has a radio background – he hosted Expert Radio, a […]
