Tonight we are reflecting on Wizards & Warriors, a 1987 action platformer developed by Rare and published by Acclaim. Wizards & Warriors was Rare's second NES release after the black box game Slalom. Rare went on to develop more games in the series such as Ironsword and Kuros: Visions of Power.Send a textThe miNEStry founders, Archbishop Dracul and Father Avram, seek to inspire their 8-bit parishioners through methodical and ceremonial scrutiny of the library of games on the Nintendo Entertainment System.
Scott Pilgrim EX is a spiritual sequel to a Netflix animated series from 2024, a Scott Pilgrim movie tie-in game from 15 years ago, and an underrated beat ‘em up series that debuted on the NES. Or to put it another way: Scott Pilgrim EX is deeply nostalgic, not for one moment, but for the breadth of the millennial gamer experience. Is that… fun? It will depend on your love of Scott Pilgrim, Rivert City Ransom, and the ongoing renaissance of a long-dormant genre. Get the full list of games (and other stuff) discussed at www.besties.fan. Lots of trailing pieces from last month (that is, familiar game titles) in this installment of the Legacy Music Hour, even though it is a free play. For starters, Rob, Brent, and Gabe debate whether or not a track is Asiatic sounding (again, that's not the topic this episode). They talk about meter and melody and the like. And anyway, they also talk about other stuff and play

Arcades roar, quarters clatter, and a cartoon ape climbs into legal history. From that moment, we trace how Nintendo turned courtroom battles into a durable framework that protects creativity, sustains markets, and shapes how gaming IP is enforced worldwide. We walk you through the legendary Donkey Kong versus King Kong fight, the NES lockout wars with Atari Games, and the surprising Game Genie ruling that carved out space for temporary, player-side tweaks. We then follow the money and the norms: why mass ROM hubs fell, how a single operator faced heavy statutory damages, and what counts as preservation versus willful distribution. The story expands into anti-circumvention law—mod chips, access controls, and the logic of prevention—before crossing into Europe, where the CJEU's proportionality test in PC Box affirmed platform security while keeping room for legitimate uses like homebrew. We also dive into patents on touchscreen and virtual joystick mechanics, showing how “feel” can rest on protected technical design, and close with the rapid Yuzu settlement that highlights today's fast-moving fight over active titles and alternative supply chains.Across these cases, a clear strategy emerges: IP as architecture. Copyright draws the line around expression, trademarks anchor identity, patents shield engineered solutions, and anti-circumvention maintains the gates. When used with precision, these tools don't choke innovation—they make it possible for studios to invest, for platforms to remain stable, and for beloved franchises to grow without being hollowed out by leakage. If you care about how games endure from cartridge to cloud, this legal map explains why some doors stay open and others must close. If this journey challenged your assumptions about ROMs, mods, and emulators, share it with a friend, subscribe for more plain-talk IP case studies, and leave a quick review telling us which case changed your mind.Send a textCheck out "Protection for the Inventive Mind" – available now on Amazon in print and Kindle formats. It's been a long time coming, but the Beat of the Month crew is finally doing a deep dive for one of the most acclaimed and beloved franchises in gaming - Metal Gear Solid! We take a look at the humble beginnings on NES and our experience with those games before getting into the main course of the franchise with Metal Gear Solid on PS1 and the rest of the mainline games that followed. We also touch base on some of the side games and re-releases that have came out over the years - and there's a lot of them! We don't dive into the plot too much for each entry but there are spoilers sprinkled through out. Come to think of it I should have used the alert sound effect for those...oh well. You have been warned! We don't spoil much from MGS4 though since that is finally getting released from PS3 prison, but MGS5 has a big spoiler that some people learned for the first time. So without further ado - grab your cardboard box and your cigarettes and join us, for this deep dive into Metal Gear Solid!

This week on Thanks For Playing, Matt and Hot Mickey run an abridged history of the console wars—from Atari's boom-and-bust (yes, E.T.), to Nintendo's NES “seal of quality,” Sega's edgy Genesis era, Sony's PlayStation pivot that changed everything, and Microsoft entering the chat with Xbox Live, LAN parties, and Halo nights. They also debate what console wars even look like now: fewer exclusives, crossplay everywhere, Steam remote play, and a future that might be more “subscription/cloud wars” than plastic boxes under your TV. Much like a SNES logo in the Sega font, the tracks for this episode were 50% Sega, 50% Nintendo, and 100% bonk. "Industen" is a fully orchestrated and epic piece from Actraiser 2 by none other than the famous Yuzo Koshiro. "Mexico" from Saturday Night Slam Masters has a classic old

We don't always make great choices when we get games, dear listeners. Great merchandising, hype cycles, allusions to other properties we do like, and clever marketing can all feed into trying to gloss over a sub-par title and get us to buy into it. That's the point, after all. Best understand that once in a while you'll pick up a bad game and not realize it until you are already playing it. On this episode, part two of three, I go back to the NES for some games that weren't very good but were not bad enough for a verbal takedown elsewhere. Maybe they are your favorites, but they certainly aren't mine. Give it a listen, and let's commiserate.

Welcome to another completely normal, absolutely unhinged daily comedy show where the tech almost fails, the allergies are aggressive, and somehow we open three cosmic portals before 9am.Today starts with a good old-fashioned Gen X troubleshooting session (did we unplug it? Did we punch it? Did we blow in it like an NES cartridge?) before diving into Rafe's first round of allergy shots. Nothing bonds strangers faster than sitting in a medical waiting room comparing chronic symptoms like it's poker night. Meanwhile, Riz recounts the time his kid's lips swelled up mid-shot and casually reminds us that yes — sometimes the sniffles are not just the sniffles. From there? Oh, we go spiritual. It's apparently the Lunar New Year, a solar eclipse, AND the Age of Aquarius — meaning we've got 72 hours of Fire Horse energy to fix our lives. Or at least start a band with our reborn co-host. We break down what the Year of the Fire Horse means, revisit 2014 like it was a hazy fever dream of sushi photos and mall carousels, and try to remember anything meaningful we did before TikTok ruined our attention spans. Then we spiral (intellectually, obviously).Would you rather be a dumbass who looks smart… or a genius who looks like a dumbass? The debate gets heated. Confidence vs. competence. Ignorance vs. misery. Comment section energy vs. tortured Iowa genius energy. It's basically philosophy… if philosophy drank gas station coffee. We also tackle the most “normal” things that secretly feel meaningless — signing group birthday cards for coworkers you wouldn't recognize at Schnucks, pretending to read terms & conditions, awkwardly standing through the Happy Birthday song, and the endless, soul-crushing treadmill of dishes. Is making your bed just pushing a rock up a hill? Are meetings just corporate theater? Why are we like this? And then… the hypothetical that broke the room:You get $20 million tax free. But one of your co-hosts turns into a baby. You must raise them. No babysitters. 18 years.Who's the easiest child? Who's getting stage-parented into a boy band? Who's definitely not surviving puberty in Rafe's house? Alliances are formed. Feelings are hurt. Scott somehow becomes the universal “safe pick.” Learn plots revenge. Moon declines more parenting. Riz considers conservatorship-level management. It's chaos. It's existential. It's petty. It's hilarious.Just another completely reasonable episode of your favorite daily comedy show where we solve nothing but talk about everything.Follow The Rizzuto Show → https://linktr.ee/rizzshow for more from your favorite daily comedy show.Connect with The Rizzuto Show Comedy Podcast online → https://1057thepoint.com/RizzShow.Hear The Rizz Show daily on the radio at 105.7 The Point | Hubbard Radio in St. Louis, MO. In today's Daily Fix:Xbox Game Pass Wave 2 titles have been revealed, and there are some big open-world heavy-hitters. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Complete Edition, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, and Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 all make their way to the service, among other games. In other news, Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile will go offline in just a couple of months—not to be confused with Call of Duty: Mobile, which is still going strong (and also has a battle royale mode). And finally, a toy set from the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy Movie may have spoiled the reveal of a beloved NES character.

Mega Man… After snow and ice melted and power was restored to most of Nashville-Davidson County, Metro Council Members Emily Benedict (D–District 7) and Courtney Johnston (R–District 26) filed a resolution calling for the Electric Power Board of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County to terminate Nashville Electric Service (NES) CEO Teresa Broyles-Aplin. Both council members represent districts that endured multiple days without power. They say the city’s preparation for the winter storm, as well as the handling of restoration efforts, was poorly managed — and that NES leadership must be held accountable. Benedict pointed to reduced tree trimming earlier this year as one of several contributing factors. "It's a complete failure of leadership for some time from vegetation management. There's a lot of things in the resolution that speak to the problems that led to the problem that we have." Johnston echoed the call for change. "People were affected in a very serious way and people want to see that we are listening to them and they want action taken now. The trust in the person leading this organization that is supposed to be providing reliable power to them has eroded." Happy Beginnings means (among other things) that this mixtape begins with an absolute banger. Divine Bloodlines (Stage 1 BGM) from Dracula X on the SNES is a very faithful rendition of the original CD version, with sampled electric guitar and some killer bass guitar. Castle Theme from Valkyrie no Densetsu has a very regal sound, with some great sampled choir voices. This mixtape isn't

JJ and Tucker break down the origins of TMNT as a gritty comic parody, how it was sanitized into a cartoon juggernaut, and why the toys, arcade games, movies, and NES ports still matter. Along the way, they revisit formative childhood memories, rank Turtle video games, defend the Jim Henson live-action films, and unpack why the first movie still holds up.
We just lived through the same crisis — an ice storm that froze Nashville in place for the better part of a week and caused the worst power outage the city has ever seen. While we all experienced it, everyone's experience was different, even from one neighbor to the next. Some lost power for two weeks. Others had lights and heat the whole time. Some had trees split their home in two. Others just had to clean up a few sticks. Some had frozen pipes that left them homeless. Others were already unhoused and “remarkably unbothered” by the cold. The ice storm of 2026 will become a core memory for many of us. For others, the outages and related damage is the least of our problems. Reactions have ranged from anger to empathy and resignation to activation. Today, we're doing a bit of an autopsy on the emotional anatomy of a collective crisis. We'll look at how we should process all that these last two weeks brought up, and we're taking your calls later in the hour.GuestsKate Martin, M.Ed., LPC-MHSP, The EstuaryAshley Hampton, Director, Healing In The MarginsAnita Richardson, native Nashvillian and new participant in the NES solar programRev. In today's episode, I'm discussing some updates I've made in this past week on the pixelart Rocketeer game that I started a number of years ago. I took a break from the programming part to do some work on the art and music for the game. The game starts with a short intro cut scene told in 1-2 pictures + text, like old NES games, so I made a intro montage picture showing Cliff's life after the events of the movie, implying he's still a pilot, the rocketpack was rebuilt, and his friends - Jenny and Peevy - are still his main motivators. Here is a short video showing some footage from last week discussed in last episode. I successfully got the throwing physics to work, so now Cliff can toss grenades he finds. He can also blow himself up that way, though, so you have to be careful. I was thinking that if you do that, maybe the death scene will be Peevy calling Cliff a chowderhead or something.See the picture at https://13thhr.wordpress.com/2026/02/09/the-thirteenth-hour-podcast-548-and-like-a-hood-ornament-91-updates-on-the-rocketeer-vs-the-third-reich-video-game-4/I also started working on the music for these intro levels. Since they are inside a castle, I wanted there to be a different theme than the outdoor flying levels, like Super Mario Brothers. I'm using a variation of the Jenny Theme from the Rocketeer soundtrack by James Horner for these levels so started working out the notes, the drums, and the tempo. It's very rough at this point, but my hope it I can make a loopable bit that can play over and over during these levels. Frank is joined by Guest Host Kate Willaert, author, historian, and YouTuber, to interview Jeremy Parish, media curator at Limited Run Games, author, YouTuber, and podcaster. Jeremy has a series of “Works” books and videos as part of a massive project to chronologize the 8-bit era. Jeremy's work covers various consoles, including Game Boy, NES, SG-1000, and Famicom, highlighting the significance of third-party developers and the impact of the NES on game design. We share a universal complaint of the challenges of maintaining a comprehensive and accurate release list for systems like the SG-1000 and the importance of community feedback in refining our work. The conversation touches on the potential for both future projects and genre-specific series, such as Metroidvania and Shmup games. You can listen to the Video Game History Hour every other Wednesday on Patreon (one day early at the $5 tier and above), on Spotify, or on our website.Mentioned in the show: Jaws Retro Edition (pre-orders closed): https://limitedrungames.com/collections/all-in-production/products/jaws-retro-edition-bigger-boat-edition-switch-ps5?_pos=3&_sid=a0a6bd1b1&_ss=r See more from Jeremy Parish:Bluesky: @jparish.bsky.social Youtube: @JeremyParish Podcast: patreon.com/retronauts Website: limitedrungames.com See more from Kate Willaert:Bluesky: @katewillaert.bsky.socialYouTube: /a critical hitWebsite: acriticalhit.comPatreon: /acriticalhitVideo Game History Foundation:Email: podcast@gamehistory.orgWebsite: gamehistory.orgSupport us on Patreon: /gamehistoryorg
Nearly two weeks after Winter Storm Fern paralyzed Nashville, questions are swirling about damages, insurance, and where to get help — especially if you're a renter. Elizabeth Leiserson, an attorney with the Legal Aid Society, joins executive producer Whitney Pastorek to help break down the recovery process. What's your landlord responsible for? Can you withhold rent? When do you need a lawyer? And who can you call for help? If you or someone you know is facing eviction or mortgage foreclosure due to the storm, or missed an eviction court date, please visit las.org/evictionhelp or call 833-837-HOME (4663). If you have an upcoming court date, do not skip it. Your chance at getting help from the Eviction Right To Counsel program dramatically increases if you show up — look for the blue table. If you need to check your court date or the status of your case, call the General Sessions Court Clerk at 615-862-5195. Visit our running resource page of opportunities to help and be helped here. Not since 2013 has the Legacy Music Hour done a focus on music with an Asiatic influence, but as they've been doing more themed episodes lately, here it is once again. Some pretty standard picks here from games like Shinobi and Legend of the Mystical Ninja, but maybe a couple lesser known titles as well, all employing some kind of Far East element, even if sometimes subtly. This game's pretty sick.If you haven't played it, it's a standard sidescrolling shooter/platformer, but with one catch: no jumping. All your platforming is done with a grappling hook. It's a really ambitious concept with a learning curve to be sure, but for the most part I think it works great. Add in a map to explore, a story (kinda) and hitler's exploding head (seriously), and you have yourself a Commando that's Bionic, my friend. My buddy David Rae makes his return to the show this week and we're finally talking the game he's been holding me to play since RTG started. We're getting into the map, the difficulty, the grappling hook adventures, and yes of course, killing Hitler. All par for the course when it comes to the NES.And before we grapple I deliver another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week someone asks if RTG will ever join the video podcast ranks? What forgotten series needs a revival next? And am I planning to check out the Virtual Boy games on the Switch 2??Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! Noid.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
