He's also an author, speaker, and has been a longtime participant in the Global Leadership Summit at Willow Creek. Key Topics What holds church leaders back The most common internal limitation isn't skill or resources — it's the lack of felt permission. Pastors are often communal and loyal by nature, which also makes them dependent on someone saying "it's okay to go for it." The church culture tends to withhold permission rather than grant it. This is a big reason conferences are so magnetic — they're not primarily about information, they're about permission receiving. People go to be in a room where they feel free to dream, risk, and believe. Erwin said a large part of his life's work has been giving people permission: to dream big, to risk, to try low-percentage ideas, and to fail without that defining their worth. Giving permission downward in the org chart Leaders often receive permission at a conference and then come back and tell their team what to do — which is not the same as giving permission. True permission-giving means creating space for people to grow, develop, dream, and execute in their own way. Key principle: hold tight to where you're going, hold loosely to how you get there. Someone can execute at a high level and still do it differently than you would — and that's okay. "It's All About People" vs. "You Can't Take Everyone With You" (from Mind Shift)McManus intentionally places these as Chapter 1 and Chapter 3 as a juxtaposition. Most leaders lean hard toward one and neglect the other. His advice: read both, figure out which one resonates more, then go apply the other one. That tension is where relational elegance lives. When people leave, they attack your character At Mosaic, after major style and culture shifts, the people who left rarely said "I don't like the music." They attacked Erwin's character because it made them the hero of their story. He found the exceptions refreshing — the people who were honest ("the church is too young," "too diverse," "too evangelistic") made it easy to respond. His approach: when you bring clarity as a leader, you're giving people the gift of choice. If they hate who you are now, they're going to really hate who you're becoming — so this is actually a good time to part ways. "If you're everything, you're nothing." The white interior at Mosaic Hollywood During the 18-month pandemic shutdown, Aaron McManus pitched painting everything white — stage, speakers, walls. No precedent existed for it. The idea was: when people come back, we don't want them having a nostalgicexperience — we want them going forward. The white space became a blank canvas for projection and lighting in every direction. It's now been widely imitated. (They did the same thing at their current Pasadena theater space, which was the longtime home of the Rocky Horror Picture Show.) The Seven Frequencies of Communication The seven frequencies are a framework for understanding how people communicate and how they're heard — not just outwardly but internally, since your inner voice shapes the health of your soul. The frequencies: Commander, Challenger, Healer, Motivator, Professor, Seer, Maven. This isn't a static identity — it's a dynamic range you can access. The goal is mastery over your frequencies, not just defaulting to your primary one. Every frequency also has a shadow — the dark version of the same trait. Commander → Dictator. Seer → Perfectionist. Challenger → Manipulator. Motivator → Performer. We tend to access our shadows with zero effort and have to work to access the authentic frequency. That's true of all positive human characteristics: courage, forgiveness, integrity all require work. Their negative counterparts (fear, bitterness, dishonesty) require nothing. Practical example: Erwin's wife Kim is a Commander. 42 years of "turn off the lights and lock the doors" instead of "I love you." He learned to translate that as I love you, keep me safe. His daughter Mariah is a Challenger — she's always trying to elevate him, but it reads as reprimand. Understanding the frequency means getting offended less. Hire for character, not for frequency When Jake asked whether leaders need Commander or Challenger to run a department, Erwin's answer was simple: if the character is right, the frequency will work itself out. A high-Motivator leader who doesn't have Commander will still make people want to achieve for them — and the team will learn to push for clarity on execution. Environmental health matters more than frequency profile. Commanders and competency Commanders have competency as a core value. If you move a Commander into a new role without giving them enough context, resources, and framing, they won't feel like they're being trusted — they'll feel like they're being set up to fail. The key: make sure they feel equipped, not just trusted. "He just wants to make sure he has enough swords." Seers in leadership Many megachurch pastors are Commander-Seer combinations. The risk for Seers is confusing movement with momentum — pivoting sideways to get around an obstacle, while the team thinks the direction has changed entirely. The Seer knows they're still heading north; they forgot to communicate why they went east first. Solution from their team's side: instead of assuming the vision changed, ask "this feels like a direction change — is this a strategic move to get there faster? Help me communicate it well." Churchfront "Captive Consultant" segment Erwin's advice for Churchfront: since they're committed to serving churches exclusively, look for where churches are growing fastest — new residential development, emerging demographics — and think about what a scalable package looks like for smaller churches. The message is too important not to be heard clearly, which makes sound and AV integration genuinely mission-critical work. He also noted that once a building is built, the acoustic future is largely set — making early architectural involvement from integrators essential. Book/Resource mentioned: The Seven Frequencies of Communication — includes an assessment on their website.  Also mentioned: Mind Shift by Erwin McManus.

This week I'm joined by Nathan Killen, and we get into the stuff that doesn't show up in highlight reels — weather that doesn't cooperate, thermals that don't do what you expect, and seasons that force you to adjust whether you want to or not. We talk traditional archery, food sources, scrapes, rattling, and the little woodsmanship details that still matter no matter how much technology creeps into the picture. Nathan and I both share seasons where patience mattered more than aggression, and where trusting your gut made more difference than any piece of gear ever could. There's a thread running through this one about balance — using tools without losing the mystery, learning without overcomplicating it, and remembering that comparison will rob the joy out of this faster than a blown wind ever will. This episode is about instinct, adaptability, and keeping the hunt honest. WHAT TO EXPECT FROM PODCAST 481 Weather, thermals, and food sources dictate deer movement more than anything else. Traditional archery sharpens awareness and forces you to earn every opportunity. Older bucks live by patterns — your strategy has to adjust to theirs. Hunt the edges of sign, not just the sign itself. Woodsmanship is built through reps, not talent. Trusting your gut often beats overthinking the setup. Technology can help — but the mystery is what keeps hunting meaningful. This podcast is the audio version of the Gear Garage Live Show, where Zach answers submitted questions and talks all things whitewater. In this episode, Zach dives deep into river safety "rants," analyzes rescue videos, and discusses the importance of professional training for both private boaters and aspiring guides. Zach begins the show by announcing new one-day rescue clinics offered by Northwest Rafting Company. These clinics are designed as a "palatable" way for private boaters to gain experience in specific areas like mechanical advantage and throw bags without committing to a full three-day course. He also shares a personal "safety rant," emphasizing that while some may call him a "safety squirrel," his access to non-public incident reports drives his passion for teaching rescue techniques. A significant portion of the episode is dedicated to video analysis. Zach reviews footage of a "pushing move" gone wrong, explaining why aggressive maneuvers can leave boaters exposed and sideways to obstacles. He suggests that many situations are better handled by pulling or using a "ferry" to maintain control. He also reviews a rescue scenario in flat water, cautioning against the reflexive use of throw ropes which can create dangerous tangles in the water. The discussion also touches on gear essentials, particularly PFD selection. Zach notes that while many kayakers prefer low-profile vests for agility, rafters—especially larger individuals—benefit from higher flotation models like the Astral Indus or specific NRS rescue vests. He concludes with a reminder that professional growth in the industry requires "time on the water," recommending programs like the Class III Rowing School for those looking to build a solid foundation. Topics and links that Zach talked about in this episode Training: Northwest Rafting Company Rescue Clinics and Class III Rowing School. Gear: PFD selection and the dangers of ropes in flat water rescues. Safety: Using your voice as a rescue tool (Speech, Reach, Throw, Row, Go).

February 28, 1987. Miller Cave, Iowa. Five college students, their geology professor Kathy McCluskey, and staff member Mike Price descended 112 feet into a vertical shaft in an Iowa farm field. What should have been a routine winter caving trip became a fight for survival when a storm shifted direction and water began pouring into the cave. Student leader Chad Blietz (now Chad Darby) shares his firsthand account of climbing through freezing spray in complete darkness while battling severe hypothermia—making impossible decisions when conditions turned deadly. Seven people entered Miller Cave that day. Only five would make it out alive. This episode explores the technology limitations of 1987, the split-second decisions that determined who lived and who died, and the survival lessons that matter today: trust your gut, avoid sunk cost fallacy, and respect how quickly conditions can change in the wild. We honor the memory of those lost that day. Hosted by Kaycee McIntosh and Julie Henningsen ️ Contains descriptions of hypothermia, drowning, and death. Do you really need new gym gear—or is Instagram just convincing you that you do?In this episode of FOF Gym Chat, we are chatting about the gear we get questions about all the time: shoes, straps, grips, belts, sleeves, and braces. We explain what's worth buying (in our opinion), when it makes sense to upgrade, and who actually benefits from each piece of equipment. You'll learn:Why flat shoes matter (and which brands we trust)When barefoot shoes vs. trainers vs. lifters make senseWhy straps and grips don't “ruin” your grip strengthWhen you should think about (and shouldn't) wearing a lifting beltHow to use sleeves and braces for support—not as a crutchIf you've ever wondered whether a piece of gear will help you lift better, safer, or more confidently—or if you're just being influenced—this episode will save you time, money, and frustration.Enjoy!K+J

Today our hosts discuss experiments in gear: those times where you buy something, experience or learn something new with it, then realize it is no longer for you. They revisit one of Dan's objects of the past, take a lot of calls, and analyze a lot of common thoughts around what drives a gear purchase and, eventually, a gear sale. In this episode of The Dept. Omar sits down with marriage and family therapist Angie Richey for one of the most vulnerable and practical conversations we've ever had on the podcast. Together with Amanda, they unpack how childhood experiences shape leadership, business decisions, communication patterns, money beliefs, and even physical affection in marriage. Dr. Richey breaks down the difference between coaching, therapy, and pastoral care, why CEOs and high-performers need self-awareness to avoid becoming the “cap” on their business, and how limiting beliefs formed early in life silently dictate pricing, conflict avoidance, scheduling triggers, and people-pleasing patterns. From “opposite action” as a growth tool, to breaking victim mentality, to learning secure attachment and healthy touch in marriage, this episode is a masterclass in doing the inner work so your life and business don't bleed from unhealed places. If you're building something meaningful, a company, a marriage, a family, or a personal brand. This conversation will challenge you to heal what's under the surface so you can lead from wholeness instead of autopilot.

Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for Episode 605 of the Chasing Tone Podcast - We are the weird ones and is this the ultimate collection of gear ever?  Blake tells us about his CB radio close calls and Brian ponders whether he should be training monkeys and cats. Richard has been playing with AI music generation and is both impressed and depressed at the same time. Somehow a Trans-Am and various wild predictions are involved. Brian admits he is not the typical guitar player and we get some insight into his creation process as he has re-discovered an old favorite pedal. Meanwhile Richard and Brian discuss the all new Wampler release and there are unrepeatable stories. Blake has been playing with a classic Wampler pedal and it has made him feel warm and fuzzy but Richard ruins it all with his bad reading.  Richard has been digging through the items coming up for auction in the Jim Irsay collection and he is bowled over by the quality and Britishness of the collection. He also explains the concept of pancake day. Meanwhile Paul Reed Smith made some comments about the Telecaster and it has drawn some views and created an interesting question.Hot Cake, Leviathan secrets, Silver Jamboree, Chris Shiflett Tele, Small Venues...it's all in this week's Chasing Tone!We are on Patreon now too!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/chasingtonepodcast)Courses and DIY mods:https://www.betterguitartone.comhttps://www.wamplerdiy.comhttps://www.guitarpedalcourse.comYoutube:https://www.youtube.com/@chasingtonepodcastFind us at:https://www.wamplerpedals.com/https://www.instagram.com/WamplerPedals/https://www.facebook.com/groups/wamplerfanpage/Contact us at: podcast@wamplerpedals.comSupport the show

In this week's Northwest Florida Fishing Report, host Joe Baya delivers a winter "real report" across the Panhandle with three key conversations: surf fishing, boat-show season, and a tough-but-producible inshore bay bite. On the surf side, Joe talks with Justin Reed of Justin Reed Fishing about February slowdowns and how to prep for spring—favorite rod lengths (9–10' vs 12'), why he likes 5000-size reels for torque, and must-have surf tackle like Sputnik sinkers, pompano rigs, and sand fleas. They also preview boat season with Jim Cox in an Emerald Coast Boat & Lifestyle Show rundown, covering what to expect at the show, why seeing boats in person matters, and the coastal-lifestyle vendors and seminars that make it a full family event. To wrap, Joe checks in with Justin Leake of Panama City Inshore on winter inshore fishing—focusing on protected bayous and deeper creeks for trout and redfish, using suspending jerkbaits to locate fish, and leaning on live shrimp when the bite gets picky as water temps start creeping toward spring.   Sponsors: Dixie Supply and Baker Metal Killerdock Coastal Connection EXP Realty AFTCO SlipSki Solutions Black Buffalo Hilton's Realtime Navigator
