Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we begin a short mini-series on casual games, beginning with PopCap's Plants vs Zombies. We spend a lot of time setting these lower-challenge games both in their time and against other genres before talking a bit about the game itself. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Through 2-1 Issues covered: setting the game in 2009, PopCap's fortunes, repackaging a genre, puzzly games in Java, appealing to core games and casual, being good at rewards, walled gardens, starting on desktops and moving to phones, phone fragmentation, A/B design testing, hidden objects, translating well to mobile, the history of EA's acquisitions, the early tower defense games, coining the term, automated elements, the stress of the RTS, MOBAs, removing the dev hurdles from a genre, modders doing something they could do, autochess, recognizing it, a simple concept that reads quickly, the impenetrable defense, turtling: the video game, the way zombie movies build, design ideas can come from anywhere, easily visualizing new things, archetypes, easily reading how much health is left, having a moment of joy in a reveal, seeing the zombie affordances, locking into strategies. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: Batman: Arkham Asylum, Uncharted 2, Demons's Souls, Ratchet & Clank, Brutal Legend, Assassin's Creed II/series, Borderlands, Infamous, Dragon Age: Origins, Left 4 Dead 2, New Super Mario Bros Wii, Bayonetta, PS3/Xbox 360/Wii, EA, Peggle (series), Bejewelled, Blizzard, Zuma, Alchemy, Drop 7, Threes, Diner Dash, Resident Evil 4, Fortnite, Facebook, Farmville, Zynga, Kongregate, Ultima, Westwood, Bioware, Mass Effect, Crystal Dynamics, Morgan Gray, Desktop Defense, Atari, Rampart, Defense of the Agents, Warcraft III, Starcraft, League of Legends, Riot, Valve, George Fan, Diablo, PixelJunk Monsters, Orcs Must Die!!, Vermintide, Tower of Goo, The Birds, Tippi Hedren, Portal, Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia. Nicholas is sitting by himself by the fireplace. Higgins is unshaven and wearing a hole ridden jacket. Mr. Hale says that each family is going through many sorrows at that time. Higgins agrees and says that they can always find him at home, as he is out of work. Mr Hale says that they owe his daughter money for helping them around the house, which Higgins refuses, saying that if Mr. Hale pays Mary, then he would have to pay Margaret for her help with Bessy. Higgins has apparently not asked for work. Apparently, the Masters are refusing to hire workers who are associated with the Union, forcing them to sign contracts that force them not to give tithes to the union. Higgins feels so strongly for the Union that he refuses to work for anywhere that would force him to sign such a contract. Margaret dares to ask, in her non-confrontational way, if he remembers Boucher saying that the Union is a tyrant. Higgins says that he understands that the Union can be cruel, but that it is needed for the betterment of the whole. Higgins then goes to say that the Strike was over, the moment the Boucher started a riot. Margaret asks if it would not have been better to not have people like Boucher in the Union. Mr. Hale tries to stop her daughter from pressing him further, but Higgins tells him that it is okay, he likes Margaret. Apparently after the Riot, Boucher went into hiding and didn't show himself for a few days, then he tried to ask for work at one of the factories, but he was refused everywhere he went. Outside, the sound of marching feet can be heard moving towards the house, they are carrying a heavy burden. When they arrive at Higgins' house, it is revealed to be Boucher, drowned in the river. They have come to Higgins to announce the death to Mrs. Boucher. Higgins says that he cannot go, he didn't like the man and doesn't know his wife well enough. Margaret suggests her father go but then decides to go herself. Mrs. Boucher is sitting in a chair, and the house looks very dirty. Margaret asks the woman how she is, and the women replies that she is upset with her husband for having left her alone with the children. He has been gone for four days and has sent no word to her. Margaret goes to the woman and announces Bouchers death without any words. Mrs. Boucher asks if Margaret is certain, going to the extent of claiming that people have been brought round after having drowned. Margaret holds the woman, and slowly the children start to understand too. A sound at the door is heard and Margaret asks one of the children to open it. It is her father and a woman. The woman takes over for Margaret in caring for Mrs. Boucher, and Margaret sets to getting rid of the bystanders. The children are taken away by some of the voyeurs and are properly fed. Then, once alone, they try to tell Mrs. Boucher that her husband didn't die by accident. She understands. Following this, Mr. Hale and Margaret leave, and go to check on Higgins, he doesn't let them in, only saying that he wishes to be alone on a day like this.SEO stuff I don't want to do. Elizabeth Gaskell's classic, "North and South" sees Margaret Hale's live uprooted as her family moves to the north of England. Initially disgusted by the ugliness of the industrial town of Milton, Margaret develops a strong sense of social justice after seeing the poverty and suffering of local mill workers.
A small hand reaches into the tin, fingers excitedly hovering over the treats inside. The choice should be simple: take a biscuit, any biscuit. But no: two biscuits are better than one, and three better than two. Yet, if the little hand takes too long to make up its mind, the little burglar will be discovered. Standing Firm Together 1 Peter 3:8-17 is the topic that will be discussed today on RIOT Podcast, a Christian Discipleship Podcast. What If the World’s Greatest Evidence for Christianity Isn’t an Argument… but a Christian? Most people think defending the Christian faith begins with having the right answers. But the Apostle Peter begins somewhere else. He begins with our relationships. In this special Riot Podcast Live episode (recorded during last week’s livestream), we continue our study through 1 Peter and discover why a church that lives in unity, humility, compassion, and love becomes one of the most powerful witnesses to a watching world. Before Peter tells believers to “always be ready to give an answer,” he first calls them to live the Gospel together. In this episode, we explore three life-changing truths from 1 Peter 3:8–17: Live the Gospel (vv. 8–12) Why unity is different from uniformity The power of compassion and genuine Christian community Why humility strengthens relationships How blessing instead of retaliation reflects the heart of Christ Trust the Gospel (vv. 13–14) Why following Jesus sometimes comes with opposition How to overcome the fear of people Why faithfulness matters more than popularity Share the Gospel (vv. 15–17) What Peter really means by “Always be ready to give an answer” Why apologetics begins with a transformed life How to defend your faith with gentleness, respect, and hope The one question every Christian should be prepared to answer: “How has Jesus changed your life?” This conversation reminds us that people often watch our lives long before they listen to our words. Our greatest testimony isn’t winning arguments, it’s becoming more like Jesus. “By this everyone will know that you are My disciples, if you love one another.” — John 13:35 Scriptures Discussed 1 Peter 3:8–17 John 13:35 Philippians 2:2–8 Romans 12:15 Galatians 6:2 James 5:16 Psalm 34 John 14:6 John 15:20 1 Corinthians 15 Question for you: If someone asked you today, “Why do you have hope?”, what would you say?

At a time when many people feel democratic culture is under strain, it is worth looking at our own everyday behaviours that allow democracy to function. Elections, laws and political institutions are all important, but democracy also depends on how people treat one another every day. Listening to different opinions, accepting compromise, respecting agreed-upon rules and recognising opponents as people rather than enemies are all part of a healthy democracy. Maybe unsurprisingly, board games are a place to look for those values. I mean, the simple act of sitting down together to play a game, following the same rules and taking on a role, is an opportunity to act out democratic values.Read the full article here: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2026/07/28/tabletop-democracy-what-board-games-can-teach-us-about-democracy-topic-discussion/Useful LinksEpisode 408 of Der Boardcast, a German board game podcast: https://boardcast.podigee.io/408-neue-episodeMusicIntro Music: Bomber (Sting) by Riot (https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/)Music: Cruising (Romeos Erbe)Produced by Sascha EndeLink: https://ende.app/en/song/3140-cruising-romeos-erbeMusic: Sunday Morning CoffeeProduced by Sascha EndeLink: https://ende.app/en/song/13693-sunday-morning-coffeeMusic: Chill VLOG Beats 7Produced by Sascha EndeLink: https://ende.app/en/song/12914-chill-vlog-beats-7Music: Podcast Music Vol. 26Produced by Sascha EndeLink: https://ende.app/en/song/13782-podcast-music-vol-26SupportIf you want to support this podcast financially, please check out the links below:Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/TabletopGamesBlogPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/tabletopgamesblogWebsite: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/support/(Photo by Isai Ramos on Unsplash)

In her 25 years as a music journalist, Jessica Hopper has profiled the doyennes of modern rock and pop music: Björk, Kacey Musgraves, St. Vincent, Liz Phair, Robyn, and many more. Her reviews run the gamut from the latest Nicki Minaj album and the “mobile shopping mall that is the Vans Warped Tour” to the only album by D.C.'s first all-women punk band, released three decades after they broke up. The new second edition of The First Collection of Criticism by a Living Female Rock Critic expands on the 2015 one. That the provocative (and mostly accurate) title still works six years later points out that rock criticism has even fewer women in it than rock music does. Hopper joins us on the podcast to discuss her writing, from her beginnings as a local Chicago critic to her expansive oral histories of Hole and the women who transformed Rolling Stone in the 1970s. Money sets off the riot in Ephesus, when a silversmith realizes the gospel is bad for the idol business. He dresses up his profit motive in religious language, the crowd picks up the chant, and soon the whole city is roaring for two hours without most of them knowing why they came. Underneath the noise sits a real claim: the message about Jesus was actually changing how people lived and spent, and the gospel still disturbs the arrangements we have built our security on. This episode looks at what happens when the truth touches someone's bottom line. The Rev. Dr. Adam Koontz, pastor of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Oakmont, PA, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study Acts 19:21-41. To learn more about Redeemer Lutheran in Oakmont, visit redeemer-oakmont.org. The book of Acts picks up where the Gospels leave off. Jesus has risen. He has ascended. And now what? Acts answers that question. Luke tells the story of how the Holy Spirit built the Church from a handful of frightened disciples in Jerusalem into a movement that reached Rome itself. Along the way, you get Pentecost, the first sermons, the first martyrs, the conversion of Paul, the first church councils, shipwrecks, riots, and the persistent, stubborn work of God through Word and Sacrament even when His people didn't have a plan. If you've ever wondered how we got from Easter morning to the Church you sit in today, this is the book. Tune in for this new series on Thy Strong Word with Pastor Phil Booe and guest pastors as we open up the Book of Acts. Thy Strong Word, hosted by Rev. Dr. Phil Booe, pastor of St. John Lutheran Church of Luverne, MN, reveals the light of our salvation in Christ through study of God's Word, breaking our darkness with His redeeming light. Each weekday, two pastors fix our eyes on Jesus by considering Holy Scripture, verse by verse, in order to be strengthened in the Word and be equipped to faithfully serve in our daily vocations. How Does Spiritual Drift Begin? is the topic that will be discussed today on RIOT Podcast, a Christian Discipleship Podcast. What If You’re Drifting Away from God Without Even Realizing It? Spiritual drift rarely happens overnight. It begins with small compromises. Misplaced priorities. Quiet distractions. Before long, what once felt like a vibrant relationship with God becomes routine, and we don’t even notice how far we’ve wandered. In this episode, we continue our journey through the book of Micah by exploring the first chapter of this powerful prophetic book. While Micah’s message was originally spoken to Israel and Judah nearly 2,700 years ago, it speaks directly to our lives today. Together, we’ll explore: How spiritual drift quietly begins Why God always warns before He disciplines Why sin is ultimately a heart issue not just a behavior problem What idolatry looks like in the 21st century Why Micah wept instead of celebrating God’s judgment How small compromises eventually shape entire lives What God’s discipline reveals about His love The question every believer should ask: “Where has my heart slowly drifted from God?” Micah reminds us that God’s warnings are never meant to push us away, they are loving invitations to come home. Every correction is rooted in His mercy. Every confrontation is motivated by His desire to restore His relationship with His people. Because God’s greatest concern has never simply been our behavior. His greatest desire has always been our hearts. “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.” — John 10:27 Question for you: Where do you think spiritual drift usually begins in our actions, or in our hearts?

Colour is one of the first things I notice when opening a new board game. Bright player pieces, colourful resources and beautiful illustrations immediately grab my attention. Colours tell me where to look and how the game is organised. Yet, like around 1% of men, I have protanomaly, a mild form of red-green colour vision deficiency. I often see pink or purple flowers as blue, and when driving in fog, I see a car's rear red lights much later than other people. So I appreciate it when I can rely on something other than colour to tell me what I am looking at. In this article, I want to explore a century's worth of board game history and look at how colour-vision considerations have changed over time.Read the full article here: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2026/07/21/kaleidoscopic-games-the-history-of-the-use-of-colours-in-board-games-topic-discussion/Useful LinksSplendor review: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2020/07/25/splendor-saturday-review/Meeple Like Us: https://www.meeplelikeus.co.uk/Stonemaier Games' accessibility guide: https://stonemaiergames.com/about/accessibility/ColorADD: https://www.coloradd.net/en/Bombyx: https://studiobombyx.com/en/Sea Salt & Paper review: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2023/07/08/sea-salt-paper-saturday-review/Knarr review: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2024/07/20/knarr-saturday-review/Pixies review: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2024/08/10/pixies-saturday-review/ColorSym: https://colorsym.com/MusicIntro Music: Bomber (Sting) by Riot (https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/)Music: Bensound.com/royalty-free-musicLicense code: KGRW9GAFH4PVQSYAArtist: : Yunior ArronteMusic by: BensoundLicense code: PPH7TISVS7BNYB3ZArtist: : Yunior ArronteSupportIf you want to support this podcast financially, please check out the links below:Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/TabletopGamesBlogPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/tabletopgamesblogWebsite: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/support/(Photo by Fir0002 on Wikipedia)

The escape pod rattles violently as it tears through the atmosphere, before the noise suddenly fades away. A rough landing throws you against the restraints, leaving only silence until the hatch finally creaks open and fresh air rushes in with a long hiss. After you take off your helmet, you can smell unfamiliar scents. As you climb out of the pod, you can see a landscape unlike anything you have ever seen before. There are giant mountains that disappear into the clouds, strange plants that sway gently in the breeze, and countless mysteries that are waiting to be uncovered. You notice that you crashed high on a lonely hill, giving you a really good Vantage by Jamey Stegmaier from Stonemaier Games with art by Valentina Filic, Sören Meding and Emilien Rotival.Read the full review here: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2026/07/18/vantage-saturday-review/Useful LinksVantage: https://stonemaiergames.com/games/vantage/Rulebook: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/ulyfze69rb24tsgip7mn7/AGooUTmI8qBNqc5nh36BJkY/Vantage/Vantage_Rulebook_r26_web.pdf?rlkey=0ejidzd7lktoa5hyrbkmy9xse&st=jtwsdpd8&dl=0Rules video: https://youtu.be/xa476iCNIDk?si=Ejg48iUpS3G9-q4kStonemaier Games: https://stonemaiergames.com/BGG listing: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/420033/vantageMusicIntro Music: Bomber (Sting) by Riot (https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/)Sound Effects: ZapSplat (https://www.zapsplat.com/)Music: Synthie IntroProduced by Sascha EndeLink: https://ende.app/en/song/3154-synthie-introMusic: Supernatural - BackroomsProduced by Sascha EndeLink: https://ende.app/en/song/13776-supernatural-backroomsMusic: Low Energy Tension Vol. 6Produced by Sascha EndeLink: https://ende.app/en/song/13766-low-energy-tension-vol-6SupportIf you want to support this podcast financially, please check out the links below:Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/TabletopGamesBlogPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/tabletopgamesblogWebsite: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/support/

Why Did God Send the Prophet Micah? is the topic that will be discussed today on RIOT Podcast, a Christian Discipleship Podcast. What If You’re Being Discipled by Something You Don’t Even Realize? The Book of Micah isn’t just an ancient prophecy about Israel. It’s a mirror that confronts every generation. In this episode, we begin a brand-new study through the book of Micah by stepping back into the world he lived in, a nation that looked successful on the outside but was quietly collapsing on the inside. Wealth was increasing. Religion was thriving. Yet hearts had drifted far from God. Could the same thing be happening today? Together, we’ll explore: Why God raised up the prophet Micah at this specific moment in Israel’s history How prosperity can quietly lead to spiritual complacency The difference between religious performance and a genuine relationship with God Why God often chooses unlikely people to accomplish extraordinary purposes What Micah teaches about the World System, the Religious System, and the Kingdom of God Why God’s warnings are always invitations to restoration not condemnation The one question every believer should ask: “Who or what is disciplining my heart?” Micah’s message reaches far beyond ancient Israel. It challenges us to examine what is shaping our priorities, identity, and relationship with Jesus. Because the greatest threat isn’t always obvious rebellion. Sometimes it’s simply becoming busy with religion while slowly losing intimacy with God. “He has told you, O man, what is good… to do justice, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.” — Micah 6:8 Question for you: What do you think is discipling people’s hearts the most today, the world, religion, or a relationship with Jesus?

Anna is at Italian Global Series, a festival which transforms two Northern Italian cities into the meeting place for the world's leading television creatives. First up, Anna is joined by multi-BAFTA winning writer, Sally Wainwright and Olivier-award winning actor, Tamsin Greig to discuss comedy-drama series, RIOT WOMEN. They explain why a TV show about five middle-aged women starting a rock band might just be the perfect way to begin a conversation about the menopause. Sally shares advice to women writers and to the industry's gatekeepers. Tamsin suggests how today's young actors might approach the challenge of gaining a foothold in the industry. Anna then meets Chiara Sbarigia, President of Italy's Audiovisual Producers Association, which is one of the festival's organisers. Chiara talks about the festival's genesis and the venues, history and Italian hospitality which make it so unique. Chiara also shares her experience as a woman working her way up the career ladder in Italy's audiovisual industry. A huge thank you to Italian Global Series for partnering on this episode. Designing a board game that works well for exactly two players is a very different challenge from designing one that supports a range of player counts. Many games include a two-player mode, but board games such as Patchwork and Jaipur show that a dedicated head-to-head experience can be unique and not simply an adapted and reduced version of a game that is really aimed at larger player counts. In this article, I want to look at the design challenge these dedicated two-player-only games present.Read the full article here: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2026/07/14/the-two-body-problem-design-challenges-of-two-player-only-games-topic-discussion/Useful LinksPatchwork review: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2020/11/21/patchwork-digital-eyes/Jaipur review: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2020/02/29/jaipur-saturday-review/Building Blocks of Tabletop Game Design: https://www.routledge.com/Building-Blocks-of-Tabletop-Game-Design-An-Encyclopedia-of-Mechanisms/Engelstein-Shalev/p/book/9781032015811Rules of Play: https://mitpress.mit.edu/9780262240451/rules-of-play/Fundamentals of Game Design: https://blackwells.co.uk/bookshop/product/Fundamentals-of-Game-Design-by-Ernest-Adams/9780321929679MusicIntro Music: Bomber (Sting) by Riot (https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/)Music by: BensoundLicense code: 9FDOOSFAVUSZQWDPArtist: : Lunar YearsMusic: "in between violence" provided by mobygratis.SupportIf you want to support this podcast financially, please check out the links below:Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/TabletopGamesBlogPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/tabletopgamesblogWebsite: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/support/(Photo by Planet Volumes on Unsplash)

Why Does Grief Hurt So Much? is the topic that will be discussed today on RIOT Podcast, a Christian Discipleship Podcast. Why does losing someone we love feel like losing a part of ourselves? Grief is one of life’s deepest and most universal experiences. Whether you’ve lost a spouse, parent, child, sibling, friend, or someone who shaped your life, the pain can linger far longer than anyone expects. In this episode, we explore what the Bible says about grief, why it hurts so deeply, and how God meets us in our sorrow. Rather than offering clichés or quick fixes, we open Scripture to discover the hope, comfort, and presence of Christ for those walking through loss. Together, we’ll answer questions like: Why does grief feel like part of us died too? Why do painful memories return months or even years later? Why can grief feel so lonely, even when people surround us? Where is God when our hearts are shattered? Is it normal to still be grieving years later? How do we keep living after losing someone we love? Does the Bible offer real hope beyond death? Throughout this conversation, we look at the lives of David, Jesus, and other biblical examples that remind us we are never alone in our suffering. Jesus Himself wept, carried our sorrows, and ultimately conquered death so that grief would never have the final word. Whether your loss is recent or happened years ago, our prayer is that this episode reminds you that God sees every tear, walks beside you in every valley, and offers a hope that reaches beyond the grave. “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” — Psalm 34:18 What has helped you most as you’ve walked through grief? Share your story in the comments, you never know who may find hope through your words.

On today's episode of The Metal Breakdown Daily, host Scott Penfold breaks down a massive day of rock history, last-minute festival chaos, and a poignant heavy metal tribute. We start with the highly anticipated announcement of 'The Masters Of Reality', a massive 500-page officially backed Black Sabbath book arriving this October through Rufus Publishing. Overseen by legendary rock photographer Ross Halfin, the project chronicles the band's iconic Ozzy Osbourne-fronted eras up to their historic 'Back To The Beginning' farewell concert. Halfin reveals that production began two years ago with the full blessing and signed participation of the late heavy metal icon Ozzy Osbourne before his sudden passing in 2025. Plus, absolute chaos erupted in Lisbon, Portugal, over the weekend after Megadeth was forced to pull the plug on their headlining appearance at the EvilLive festival due to catastrophic "technical issues." We look at eyewitness accounts of frantic road crews running through the crowd with flashlights, leading to a near-riot as furious fans chanted for refunds and pelted the stage with projectiles. Finally, we head to Atlanta, Georgia, where a brand-new street memorial has been officially unveiled at the intersection of Memorial Drive and Boulevard SE. Erected at the site of late Mastodon guitarist Brent Hinds' tragic 2025 motorcycle crash, the moving tribute serves a dual purpose as a critical road safety warning urging drivers to look twice for motorcyclists. Robert Cwiklik, guest author, recounts how, in July 1866, New Orleans became the site of a brutal police-led riot against a constitutional convention aimed at securing Black voting rights. Following Lincoln's death, President Andrew Johnson's lenient Reconstruction policy empowered former Confederates, who enacted "Black Codes" to essentially re-enslave African-Americans through vagrancy laws and labor restrictions. When unionists attempted to rewrite Louisiana's constitution to include Black suffrage, local police and white citizens opened fire on the convention-goers. The massacre resulted in at least 44 deaths, mostly Black veterans and delegates, while white casualties were largely attributed to friendly fire. This violence horrified the North, leading to a massive Republican victory in the 1866 midterm elections and providing a mandate for Radical Reconstruction. The incident highlighted the deep-seated resistance of white Southerners to the concept of racial equality and the failure of Johnson's initial approach to national healing. The January 6th MAGA riots that saw thousands of Trump loyalists ransack the Capitol Building will stain the President's legacy and will likely shadow the GOP for decades. The revulsion for Trump has grown to a fever pitch with scores of lawmakers calling for his removal from office. This was always the inevitable end for Donald Trump, the violence a by product of the lies and divisive rhetoric he used to stoke fear and foment rage. The only surprise is that it took this long to happen. It was a heavy day and hard to watch. So we decided to lighten the mood by reaching out to Ben Stiller. Check out Michael's hilarious conversation with the movie funny man to soothe your soul after so much chaos and insurrection.
