In this episode of The First Day from The Fundraising School, host Bill Stanczykiewicz, Ed.D., reconnects with his longtime mentor and fundraising sage, Tim Seiler, Ph.D., Director Emeritus of The Fundraising School. Together, they dive into a topic that's more relevant than ever: how to navigate the stormy seas of fundraising during uncertain times. Dr. Seiler shares war stories from his early fundraising days, reflecting on crises from the 1987 stock market crash to today's mix of economic and social uncertainties. His message? While fundraisers can't control the turbulence, they can control their approach, and it starts with what he calls “rational hope.” Dr. Seiler unpacks this idea of rational hope, steering us away from the siren song of blind optimism. Instead, he champions a clear-headed, proactive mindset: keep reaching out to donors, but with empathy and creativity. Forget about relentless asks, instead, update them on your mission's progress, share ideas, and show them you're still standing tall. He shares his own experiences as a donor receiving thoughtful “just checking in” messages from nonprofits, illustrating how these gestures reinforce connection and purpose. As Seiler says, it's about reminding donors not just of the need, but of the joy and satisfaction that comes from making a difference. The conversation also explores a delicate, often unspoken challenge in the nonprofit world: fundraisers' hesitancy to admit when times are tough. Dr. Seiler and Stanczykiewicz shine a light on this vulnerability, encouraging transparency and authenticity. They argue that sharing struggles, whether it's a budget cut or a missed goal—doesn't signal failure; it signals humanity. This honesty not only builds trust but also invites donors to become part of the solution. As Seiler puts it, “If it were easy, we wouldn't need fundraisers.” Or in the words of A League of Their Own: “The hard is what makes it great.” Wrapping up, the episode channels a rousing spirit of resilience, celebrating the enduring generosity of donors who bounce back time after time, through recessions, crises, and even pandemics. With references to the classic wisdom of Henry Rosso and a dash of literary flair from William Faulkner and Walt Whitman, this episode offers fundraisers a playbook for tough times: stay hopeful but realistic, be persistent, and never forget the shared humanity that fuels philanthropy. Bottom line? Keep swinging for the fences. Fundraising's not for the faint of heart, but it's worth every pitch.
OVERVIEWPower, heart rate, or RPE (rate of perceived exertion or how you feel)? Which data point is best for gauging intensity during training or a race, and which is best for monitoring training progress? The rapid rise of AI technologies, cloud computing, and digital services is driving a renewed surge in electricity demand across the United States, reversing nearly two decades of flat growth. A major contributor to this trend is the exponential expansion of data centers, which are now expected to consume a growing share of the U.S. electricity grid. In fact, the Electric Power Research Institute estimates that data centers, which made up about 4% of U.S. electricity usage in 2023, could account for as much as 9% by the end of the decade. With energy demand accelerating and infrastructure pressure mounting, how are today's data center operators preparing for a future that demands both scalability and sustainability? In this episode of Pro AV Today, host Ben Thomas speaks with Anthony Seiler, Global Director of Data Centers Strategy at Johnson Controls, to explore how the industry is navigating the growing complexity of powering, cooling, and designing next-generation data infrastructure. From global energy impacts to multi-stakeholder collaboration, Seiler offers a candid and informed perspective.Key takeaways from the episode include…The evolution of compute—from 6kW racks to potentially 1MW racks—demands a complete rethink of power, cooling, and spatial design in data centers.Sustainability goals are colliding with rising energy use, prompting innovations in liquid cooling, renewable integration, and energy-efficient infrastructure, though no silver bullet exists yet.Coordinating diverse stakeholders—from grid operators to IT teams—is essential for aligning long-term strategies and ensuring resiliency, redundancy, and reliability.Anthony Seiler is the Global Director of Data Centers Strategy at Johnson Controls, where he leads strategic vision and go-to-market execution for a $3.5 billion global data center portfolio. With expertise in building technology solutions, cross-functional leadership, and market expansion, he has driven consistent double-digit CAGR growth by aligning innovation with enterprise KPIs. Seiler's career spans roles in strategy, sales, and vertical program leadership across the U.S., LATAM, and Canada, with a strong foundation in operational excellence and customer-centric growth.

This is a very familiar story, and so many professional athletes know this very well. They sign this significant contract, get a ridiculous amount of money, and then blow through all of it. And in year two, they injure themselves. Now, suddenly, their career is cut short. And we hear stories about celebrity athletes that we all looked up to doing menial labor because they didn't make good financial decisions while they had the dough. Somebody who's very passionate about that is my next guest, Hillary Seiler, with Financial Footwork.

Send us a textIn this episode, Elizabeth talks with Andrea Seiler (pen name: Cheydrea) about her experience writing a memoir. During the process, Andrea shifted into writing poetry and creating art, which brought so much healing to her life creating a transformation she wasn't expecting. Her life has been forever changed because she started writing down her stories. Andrea started writing down the stories of her life during the pandemic, and there was a point when depression started to set in and she knew she needed to do something to shift. She started creating artwork, an unexpected yet welcomed direction for her, because the writing process had brought up a lot of pain and her art helped with healing. She knew writing a memoir could take a long time and so she went back through her writing and started to take out the pieces that were easier to handle. It allowed her to manage the overwhelm of the pain she was experiencing. She was not a poet before she started writing her book, but it was through poetry she was able to find her voice and amplify it to share with the world. Writing was the medium that helped her through a really difficult time when she was spiraling into depression and falling out of love with so much in her life. As humans, we all have different ways we navigate the tough moments in our life, and for many of us, it is through writing that we are able to find healing. She was motivated to write to help rid herself of the pain. It was the most logical solution to write poetry and include her artwork. Andrea's daughter encouraged her to publish it as a way of showing what's possible to heal from trauma and your life stories. She discovered what was possible when you use a creative medium to share your story with others and how much bravery there is with that. You can hear the gratitude for the journey her writing took her on when you listen to Andrea on this podcast episode. She feels confident now and knows how to use her voice. You don't want to miss a visit to her website which is absolutely beautiful and feels like a warm invitation from a friend to sit down and have a conversation. Quote from AndreaWriting is clarity. And even now in my state as I sit here, if I'm confused about something or I'm in turmoil about something, I'm going to go sit down and start writing because I need clarity.
