In this fourth episode we hear insights on Short Term Missions. Are they worth the cost and effort? Mark Crocker is Executive Director of STMleader.com Mark shares with us his insights on Short Term Missions, having trained tens of thousands of volunteers to head overseas and make a difference. Mark served as the chair for short term missions at the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada’s Global Mission round table. He now consults and trains for faith-based and secular NGOs. He heads of STMleader.com and Stopover.ca. His training courses are practically geared for STM beginners and masters level college courses. Mark leverages his extensive experience in the field, which includes leading multi-million dollar development projects in Congo and Haiti. You can read about Mark’s STM leadership training and certification at the website STMleader.com. He can also be reached through Stopover.ca where he provides diversity training and benevolence coaching. He and his team specialize in delivering customized training to individuals and organizations. Their coaching is engaging and memorable and will immediately give you the tools you need to make an impact as you travel abroad. In Robert Lupton's book, Toxic Charity, Lupton has strong things to say to materially rich #Christians about #money, #power, and #dependency. Two statistics from his book include: * #Africa has received $1 trillion in benevolent aid in the last 50 years, and per capita income is now lower, life expectancy has stagnated, and adult literacy is lower. * U.S. missions teams who rushed to #Honduras to help rebuild homes destroyed by Hurricane Mitch spent on average $30,000 per home—homes locals could have built for $3,000 each. No one wants to think their generosity hurts people, but books like Dead Aid and When Helping Hurts have alerted us to the problem. So what is going on? The answer is complex and involves issues of basic economics, power, dependency, and bad motives. In the Season 2 penultimate episode of the Here & There Podcast, I sit down with Mark Crocker of STMLeader.com to talk #relief, #development, #ownership, #partnership, #simplesolutions and #doingnoharm. Comments and discussion is both welcomed and encouraged!
Short-Term Missions. Some people love it, while others love to take swings at it like it's a piñata at a Mexican-themed Alpha small group party. There are Global Workers who host plenty of STM teams every year for a variety of reasons. A nameless few GWs wouldn't be caught dead inviting and hosting short-termers in their adopted cities and villages. Say what you want about STM teams - and in the latest edition of the Here & There Podcast Mark Crocker does - there's a way you can host and use STM teams with much more effectiveness than you are right now. Mark is one of our fellowship's most creative thinkers and provocative trainers, and many of you have had your deeply held beliefs about international work challenged by Mark at #Segue. I thoroughly enjoyed rekindling my bromance for mission with Mark on this podcast, and catching up on what he's been doing since launching STMleader.com. #shorttermmissions #longtermimpact #leadercertification #stmleaderDOTcom #africaisacountry
