In Elizabeth Oldfield's book ‘Fully Alive', she wrote, “For most of the week, my value is in what I produce and what I consume. If I'm not careful my main goal in a day becomes impressive and competent, subtly signalling my status with the things I buy, say and post. Sabbath is the opposite. It is a line in the sand. Today I am just a person, and a person is beyond price. Sabbath is about valuing, fighting for and fiercely guarding rest.” [1] What are the things that demand our attention and distract us from being fully alive in Christ? My guests on this episode are Rick Hiemstra and Andy Gabruch. Rick is the director of The Centre For Research On Church And Faith at The Evangelical Fellowship of Canada.Andy is the author of Infobesity: How To Be Followers Of Jesus in an Information Overload World.[1] Elizabeth Oldfield, ‘Fully Alive' p. 110.
It's Wednesday, January 8th, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Muslims set new convert's house on fire, killing whole family A Christian family in Uganda, Africa died for their faith last month. Back in November, 64-year-old Kaiga Muhammad, his wife Sawuya Kaiga and their son Swagga Amuza Kaiga, age 26, came to faith in Christ through a local church. The pastor of the church said the family requested prayer for their son who had malaria. The pastor told Morning Star News, “We prayed for the son, and immediately he was restored to good health.” However, Muslims in the area found out about the family's conversion to Christianity. On December 26th, they set the family's house on fire, killing all three. Please pray for persecuted brothers and sisters in Christ in Uganda. Psalm 116:15 says, “Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of His saints.” Christian religious liberty in Canadian crosshairs The Evangelical Fellowship of Canada warns that new government recommendations would curtail religious freedoms in Canada. The recommendations come from a Finance Committee report at the end of last year. Recommendation 429 says the government should “no longer provide charitable status to anti-abortion organizations.” In addition, it says the Income Tax Act should be amended to “provide a definition of a charity which would remove the privileged status of ‘advancement of religion' as a charitable purpose.” The Evangelical Fellowship of Canada said, “This change, if adopted, would have a far-reaching and devastating impact - on religious charities, the people they serve, and Canadian society. Just over 40% of Canada's registered charities advance religion. This proposal would destabilize the charitable sector in Canada.” Facebook/Instagram kisses “fact checking” goodbye In the United States, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced yesterday the tech company is ending fact checking on its social media platforms. Meta is the parent company of Facebook and Instagram. Zuckerberg said, “We're going to get back to our roots and focus on reducing mistakes, simplifying our policies and restoring free expression on our platforms. More specifically, here's what we're going to do. First, we're going to get rid of fact checkers and replace them with community notes similar to X, starting in the U.S.” Life News celebrated the decision, noting, “More practically, that means Facebook is finally going to stop discriminating against pro-life conservatives and it will get rid of the liberal fact-checkers it has used for years to suppress conservative content.” West losing control of world economy In economic news, the West is slowly losing control of the world economy. The U.S. dollar's share of global currencies fell again last year to 57.4%. That's down from 72% in the year 2000, dropping a rate of about 1% per year. Bitcoin and gold skyrocket Bitcoin scraped $102,000 on Monday. The cryptocurrency market cap has hit $3.64 trillion. Plus, gold's market capitalization is estimated at $17.9 trillion and gold's value is up 129% in seven years. Silver is at $1.7 trillion. Cryptocurrency's market cap is up 10-fold since early 2018. Amazon has improved its market capitalization 16-fold in ten years, and Tesla's market capitalization value is up 24-fold in seven years. Ironically, Tesla's stock rose 71% last year, but the company's total cars sold last year dropped a skosh - by about one percent. Oldest woman is 117 And finally, after the earthly departure of the oldest woman in the world who was from Japan, the new candidate is a soccer-loving nun from Brazil. Sister Inah Canabarro of Porto Alegre is 117 years old. Another nun, Lucille Randon of France, held the record for the oldest living person in 2023, when she died at 118 years of age. The oldest living person by recent authenticated accounts was Jeanne Louise Calment of France, who died in 1997 at 122 years of age. 1 Peter 3:10-11 says, “He who would love life and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips from speaking deceit. Let him turn away from evil and do good; let him seek peace and pursue it.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Wednesday, January 8th, in the year of our Lord 2025. As 2024 draws to a close, we present a brief round-up of some of the most popular episodes of the first 12 months of the Magazine Podcast. We then read W. J. Grier's account of the last months of John Calvin's life, an appropriate 'bookend' counterbalancing the account of Calvin's early ministry in our episode 'Calvin in France'. We finish with a stirring meditation for a new year, also by W. J. Grier. Featured Content: – Excerpt from W. J. Grier, 'The Life of John Calvin', (Edinburgh: Banner of Truth, 2012), featured in the Banner of Truth Magazine, Issue 567, December 2010. – 'On Toward the Goal: A Meditation for the New Year by the Late W. J. Grier', Banner of Truth Magazine, Issue 244 (January 1984). About the Contributor: W. J. Grier came to Christ while studying Classics at Queen's University, Belfast, through the witness of a Christian student friend and in a W. P. Nicholson mission meeting. He was a trustee of the Banner of Truth Trust, co-chairman of the Leicester Ministers' Conference, a founding member of the British Evangelical Council (now Affinity), and served on committees of the Evangelical Fellowship of Ireland and the Evangelical Library in Belfast. He was a well-known and enormously respected leader throughout the international Reformed constituency. He retired in 1979 after a ministry of almost fifty-two years and went to be with the Lord on 6 August 1983. He was the author of many booklets, articles, tracts, Daily Readings and Calendar Notes, including The Momentous Event and The Life of John Calvin, published by the Trust. We are living in an interesting time to say the very least. We see preachers that are politically motivated delivering messages that are geared more towards social justices and culture rather than unpacking biblical truths. As we gear up for election season in America and all that is happening within Canada, we need to make sure we are rooted in God's Word. How should Christians engage in politics? How far is too far? What if the government is coming against our views and beliefs? How do we respond and engage with that? Join host Andrew Marcus as he spends time with Senior Ambassador and President Emeritus of the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada Bruce J. Clemenger where they unpack all things related to Christianity and politics!

“It may be that God is destroying the Church of England and who am I to stand in his way? “The real tragedy would be if, in this traumatic, confusing time, if all of the evangelicals and the broader Orthodox group fall out with each other… if we can bear with each other in our different strategies, then that will be what we need (in whatever the future in England is going to be), whether that's within the Church of England or outside. Charlie Skrine, the senior minister of All Souls Langham Place London, says his church (and other evangelical churches in the UK) are in a world of pain at the moment over the growing split in the Church of England. Mr Skrine, who is speaking at the Evangelical Fellowship in the Anglican Communion Conference in Sydney, says All Souls is united in it's commitment to biblical teaching on sexual ethics, but divided on what the best response should be. He says a third of All Souls members are wanting to leave the Church of England now, a third want to stay and fight (never leave), and a further third are confused, and this diversity of opinion is reflected in the staff team. Former All Souls evangelist Rico Tice has distanced himself from the Church of England, attends a Presbyterian Church, but retains Church of England Permission to Officiate. Rico said on the Gafcon 2018 livestream, of the gospel promoted by the Archbishop of Canterbury's Evangelism Team, “It's a different religion... and it's around whether scripture is authoritative in terms of human sexuality… I think it's a great wickedness to tell people who are on the road to destruction that they're not... if we have church leaders who are putting people on that road to destruction it's a salvation issue.. That's why we have to distance ourselves..." (https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=1482677891837392)Mr Skrine says in Revelation 2 Jesus says that his people must not tolerate sexual immorality. Mr Skrine says the bishops don't get it, but there are tiny glimmers of hope of a settlement, with bishops moving slowly reluctantly towards the conclusion that they need to give up authority and come to a settlement. He says the actions of the Bishop of London have united evangelical leaders within the London Church in a highly significant way with groups like All Souls, St Helens, Holy Trinity Brompton and Soma all standing side by side. Are you a man who lives your life with a sense of purpose and intentionality? We've heard it said that God “calls” people like pastors, teachers, and missionaries into ministry, but what about the rest of us? Do we have a “calling” on our lives? In this podcast, Dean sits down with Phil Wagler, who is certainly no stranger to Impactus! Phil lives in British Columbia with his family. He has recently written a book called Live Your Assignment: Being Christ's Ambassador in 7 Spheres of Life, which explores the idea that every believer has been given an assignment by God to fulfill in every area of our lives. He has a unique take on discipleship and calling and challenges believers everywhere to apply these principles to their lives. Phil has lived these ideas as a believer, son, husband, father, pastor, mission leader, and servant in the broader Body of Christ through working with the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada and the World Evangelical Association. Phil is deeply committed to inspiring and equipping the local church for a holistic mission and the ministry of reconciliation, which you will hear about in this interview. Dean and Phil cover a variety of topics and ideas in this conversation, including: How “reconciliation” is truly the centre of the Gospel, where we are reconciled to God, ourselves, others, and Creation. Exploring the implications of giving to Caesar what is Caesar's and giving to God what is God's (Matthew 22:21). What it means to be an “ambassador” of Christ, and the posture an ambassador takes in representing the Kingdom and the King. The spheres of influence God has given to every believer (not just the “professional” ministers!) and how to embrace being an ambassador in each of these areas. What it means to truly “let go” to God and the wonderful blessings that come when we do. Why “faithfulness” is more important than “vision” in a believer's life. Knowing that there is no “just” in the Kingdom of God (e.g. “I'm ‘just' a plumber…” “I'm ‘just' a homemaker…”; every assignment that God gives to a believer is significant! Join us for this fascinating conversation with Dean and Phil!
Perhaps like many, you have at least considered a goal or two for 2024. In the Beatitudes, Jesus gives us a vision of “the good life”. We might be surprised at the difference between our picture and God's picture of a flourishing life. Join us as Adam Driscoll, Director of Spiritual Development at Cornerstone Christian School and Chairperson of the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada, speaks on living with Kingdom vision locally and nationally as disciples of Jesus.
By now you have at least heard about Medical Assistance In Dying, otherwise known as MAiD. What you might not know is that MAiD safeguards have been quickly removed in Canada. Despite the best efforts of those in opposition, it appears we are set for new legislation in March that will expand access to MAiD to those suffering with mental illness. This has many of us concerned for these vulnerable people in our society. On this week's episode Andy sits down with David Guretzki PhD, President of the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada (EFC) to give us an update on MAiD and what we can do about it.

Are you concerned about the growing number of Canadian young adults who are leaving their faith behind? As parents, we hold a tremendous responsibility to ensure the transmission of faith to the next generation. How can we effectively disciple our children within the confines of our own homes? What steps can we take to pass on a strong foundation of faith to our children? These are not just ordinary questions; they are critical inquiries that demand careful and thoughtful answers. Parenting is a journey that brings both immense joy and significant challenges. However, our role as parents extends far beyond teaching life skills. We have the essential duty of educating our children, nurturing their social development, and raising them within the framework of faith. To shed light on this crucial topic, the Canadian Evangelical Family Faith Formation Study (CEFFFS) was initiated in 2019. This groundbreaking project, led by the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada in collaboration with 15 ministry partners, sought to understand how Canadian evangelical parents perceive their role as disciple-makers and how they actively shape their children's faith within the home. The study draws upon insights gained from interviews with parents, family ministry experts, and a comprehensive survey involving over 1,000 evangelical parents across Canada. In this episode, we are joined by two members of the research team who will help us delve into the study's key findings and their profound implications for Christian parents. Lindsay Callaway, a dedicated researcher at the Centre for Research on Church and Faith within the EFC, brings her expertise garnered from the Parenting Faith study, the Significant Church study, and her role as a co-host on the Faith Trends Podcast. Lindsay holds graduate degrees in systematic theology from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School and bioethics from Trinity International University. She lives in Ottawa with her husband, a pastor, and their three children. Joining us as well is Rick Hiemstra, Director of the EFC's Centre for Research on Church and Faith. Rick's background encompasses pastoral experience in the Wesleyan tradition, along with teaching mathematics and computer science at the high school level. Renowned for his insights on Canadian church and cultural trends, he has contributed to several studies, including Parenting Faith, Significant Church, Renegotiating Faith, and various explorations into Bible engagement, local church missions, small evangelical churches, and faith formation during emerging adulthood. Rick holds a BMath from the University of Waterloo, a BEd from Ottawa University, and an MTS from Tyndale Seminary. Together, Lindsay Callaway and Rick Hiemstra will unpack the research findings and guide us toward a deeper understanding of how we, as parents, can fulfill our vital role as disciple-makers and raise a generation firmly rooted in faith. Whenever new research comes out, we try to make it meaningful and accessible for you to know if and how it affects your ministry. Join today's conversation with Rick and Lindsay from the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada's Center of Research on Church and Faith as they dive into one aspect of the brand new Parenting Faith Research Study. When asked how much Christian parents agreed with the following statement: “I want my children to make their own religious choices, without pressure from me,” 73% moderately or strongly agreed. What does that mean for the way parents are thinking about passing on faith to their kids? And what does it look like to partner with parents in the ways they'd like faith passed on? Modeling AND teaching faith is the way! Check out ParentingFaith.ca for the research project (and other resources) Want to chat about youth ministry? “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! (Philippians 1:21-22). Those of you keen on details will recognize that I reflected on this text last Friday. There is a pastoral matter that this text addresses which did not make it into my meditation. Rather than letting it go, I want to pick up that thread today. It may be helpful to some. But it needs introduction. On our denomination's website, there is this statement, “the church condemn[s] “the wanton or arbitrary destruction of any human being at any stage of its development from the point of conception to the point of death.” Let me add to that a few thoughts found on the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada's website, “All human life is precious. Life is a gift from God for us to respect and protect through all its stages, from conception to natural death (Psalm 139). Each person is created by God, in his image, and loved by him. Each person's life has inherent worth and dignity (Gen. 1:26-27). This human dignity does not depend on our ability or circumstances; it flows from our creation in the image of God. We must treat people as bearers of God's image, not as objects for our gratification. Our lives are not our own; they belong to God (1 Cor. 6:19-20). God calls us to care for those who are vulnerable. To love our neighbour is the second greatest commandment, after loving God. The people of Israel and followers of Jesus were commanded to care for the foreigner, the widow, the orphan, and the poor.” I agree with all these statements. I also believe that the Christian church needs to step up its game in loving its neighbour. I am not thinking of position statements or Synodical pronouncements. I mean that Christians need to get into their communities to love their neighbours actually and physically. This will be inconvenient and messy and costly. But it is the best way to restore some of our lost reputation in society. And it is a matter of obedience. Our advocacy for human life needs to be holistic, including strong assistance to neighbours immersed in all sorts of poverty. There are already reports of Canadians seeking MAID (medical assistance in dying) because they cannot find medical care, food, or housing. Christians should stand opposed to MAID. But we should be just as concerned for those suffering from lack of essential resources. But that is not the point I want to make. Our strong Christian pronouncements on the value and protection of human life sometimes leads to the misapplication that we must do everything possible to stay alive. Further, that we must do everything possible to ensure our loved ones stay alive. But this is not what is intended by this doctrine of the sanctity of human life. In our text, Paul does not hang onto his life. He is quite willing to die. If he gets executed, he is good with that. “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.” It is okay for us to let go of living, to halt medical interventions and allow life to proceed to its natural conclusion, death. This is a complex issue which this meditation cannot fully address. My desire is to point out that Paul gives us permission to do this. Like him, we do not need to hang on to life at all costs. Our value for human life does not mean that we must use every medical intervention available to us. This is a recognition of our human limitations. We must use the resources God has made available to us, including medical resources, but always in the recognition that these are not omnipotent. There are times when we literally give ourselves over into the hands of God. Let me offer one piece of pastoral advice. Decisions regarding end-of-life matters should not be made in isolation. These should be made by family as a unit along with advice from wise Christians. It takes time to make such decisions. If you are faced with these matters, take your time. Let me leave you with paragraph 44 of the Contemporary Testimony: Our World Belongs to God: “Life is a gift from God's hand, who created all things. Receiving this gift thankfully, with reverence for the Creator, we protest and resist all that harms, abuses, or diminishes the gift of life, whether by abortion, pollution, gluttony, addiction, or foolish risks. Because it is a sacred trust, we treat all life with awe and respect, especially when it is most vulnerable-whether growing in the womb, touched by disability or disease, or drawing a last breath. When forced to make decisions at life's raw edges, we seek wisdom in community, guided by God's Word and Spirit” (CT #44).

Evangelism starts with what Christ has done (and is doing) for you that you cannot do for yourself. This was the insight (though not original- it's biblical) that Rev. Andrew came to upon his reflection of the fantastic recent EFAC-USA conference in Dallas, TX. EFAC stands for Evangelical Fellowship in the Anglican Communion. The theme of the conference was "Evangelism: Testifying to the Gospel of the Grace of God." On Thursday, Indians will learn the results of their country’s massive national elections. For the past five years, the country has been governed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Despite Modi’s popularity among much of the country’s Hindu population, his tenure in office has proved difficult for India’s religious minorities. The Hindutva movement—which is made up of extremists who believe that all Indians must be Hindu—have gone after Christians, Muslims, Sikhs, and other religious minorities. “Christians in India are not the only ones facing the brunt of nationalism,” Vijayesh Lal, the general secretary of the Evangelical Fellowship of India. “We know about Muslims being lynched. … That would also be the Communists, who actually subscribe to no religion at all. That would also be the Dalits, or the untouchables.” Since 2014, India has risen 11 spots on Open Doors’ World Watch List, and last year the advocacy group said that more than 12,000 Christians were attacked. Lal joined digital media producer Morgan Lee and theology editor Caleb Lindgren to discuss why he is not optimistic about the election results, regardless of the victor, why the government denies Christians and Muslims affirmative action, and why conversion is complicated.

The Evangelical Fellowship of Canada presents: The 2018 EFC Year in Review TRANSCRIPT David Guretzki: What a year it's been we're so grateful for all the support from you our affiliates donors and friends. It's been a year of challenges new initiatives and changing times but through it all we've appreciated the abundance of prayer and financial backing for what we do...Be encouraged, God is on the move. Bruce Clemenger: Part of the role the EFC is to engage in Canadian courts on a variety of issues where we seek to bring the application of biblical principles to contemporary issues before the courts. That includes religious freedom and this spring we had two decisions coming to the Supreme Court on on the issue of religious freedom. https://www.evangelicalfellowship.ca/ReligiousFreedomCanada Julia Beazley: Every week we track new developments in government bills and policies and consultations and in the range of issues we engage in. In all of this, we seek to bring biblical principles to bear on current issues often this means making a written submission or appearing before a parliamentary or Senate committee or contacting and meeting with MPs or Senators. So this fall, we appeared before the Justice Committee on Bill C-75. https://www.evangelicalfellowship.ca/Resources/Government/Bill-C-75-(2018)-On-human-trafficking,-obstructin Karen Stiller: ...we've just celebrated our one-year anniversary of the EFC podcast we're using that medium to interview people to tell stories about Canadian evangelicals and the issues that impact us all. So if you haven't listened to the podcast yet please go check it out we think you'll enjoy it. https://www.evangelicalfellowship.ca/Podcasts Joel Gordon: Last year, Love Is Moving increased EFC's engagement with youth and young adults through community generated content. This year, we also launched a leader section in the magazine called the flip side and this part of the magazine is designed for youth leaders so that they can be encouraged and provide a place for them to share their stories and their best practices with each other. https://loveismoving.ca/ Aileen Van Ginkel: It's been a busy year for networking and collaboration. Twice we gathered denominational staff who are equipping congregations to engage in indigenous relations in their communities. We also recognize that language can be a barrier to collaboration we gathered about thirty-five people to talk about our common calling and the languages mission. https://www.evangelicalfellowship.ca/collaboration Rick Hiemstra: I'm at the University of Ottawa which is just a few minutes walk from the EFC's Ottawa office which is a perfect place to talk to you about our new renegotiating Faith Research looking at the transition of young adults from high school to the next phase in life we did this partnership with power to change students InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, Truth Matters Ministries, Youth for Christ and of course The Evangelical Fellowship of Canada.
