Send us a textFrom Kathmandu to Kabul is not really that far in this era of daily intercontinental flights. And today's guest Prem Awasthi is also fortunate in that he gets to make the return trip home at least every six weeks. But still, he already feels that less than a year after migrating to work abroad, his roots in his homeland are somehow shallower. If you missed it, Prem was the first ever guest of the show after we relaunched earlier this year to focus solely on migration and Nepal. In that chat, he told us about his early life in Doti district, in Nepal's Far West region. When he spoke you could hear his deep attachment to that place, so I wonder—for him, does living and working in Kabul not only mean being away from his country, but does it also signify one more step away from his deepest roots, in his home village? In our latest chat, which we recorded at Himal Media in Patan Dhoka, we also discuss if Prem has become comfortable in his new, less visible role, on a much larger team, that he's taken on in Afghanistan. His tasks there are much different than during the nearly two decades that he worked on the frontlines of humanitarian assistance for the UN in Nepal. Finally, Prem has some thoughts for others who might be contemplating a similar move. Send us feedback and ideas. Japan is changing, and companies are looking for more skilled employees from abroad, but are Japanese companies really ready for it? What's it like to be the fish out of water? What kind of companies are best for you to work at? What types of discrimination do foreign workers face? Are these difficulties also faced in other countries? (Is the reverse true?) What kind of companies will really grow in the next 10 years? Join us as we discuss all of this and more.

Missionaries and other overseas Christian workers are subject to unique stressors, and providing proper support for this group requires a commitment from sending organizations. Despite the fact that in the past mental health problems in missions have been neglected, missions organizations have developed an increasing capacity for supporting missionaries. This presentation describes best practices for behavioral health support. We will discuss how the organizations we have worked with have reduced stigmatization, developed sound procedures for evaluating, supporting, and triaging missionaries and their families who develop psychiatric problems. We will review current medical thinking about resilience, compassion fatigue, vicarious traumatization, and burnout and discuss how these concepts can be used to inform medical support for expatriate Christian workers. (This is Part 1 of a 2 part presentation)
In this HCI Podcast episode, Dr. Westover shares an overview of the recently published HCI Research Brief, "The State of Global Worker Satisfaction," written with Dr. Maureen Andrade, HCI Research Associate. In this research brief, Dr. Westover and Dr. Andrade summarize the results of 10 different peer-reviewed academic studies that explore different facets of global differences in employee motivations and experiences that drive employee engagement and satisfaction, across 37 countries.
Episode 186: I pull back the lens a bit on the Black Lives Matter movement to consider how the uprising is touching the consciousness of workers around the globe, especially in Africa. Chris Johnson, the regional director of Africa for the Solidarity Center, joins me in a conversation about the close relationship between racism and economic oppression, and how African workers are linking the BLM movement to their own economic oppression. EPISODE 179 There is no way to downplay the risks to U.S. frontline workers during the COVID-19 pandemic—and I've dug into that in the past month or so, in our various segments talking about workers in health care, postal service, hog and poultry processing, airlines, rail, and subways. It's dangerous and frightening—and it's exponentially more terrifying when you look at the global threat to workers. Think about what tens of millions of workers in poorer countries, with far fewer resources, are facing. The images coming out of Africa, Asia and South America showing huge migrations of workers are mind-boggling—how do you even wrap your mind around how to achieve social distancing at bus depots in India, crammed with huge crowds of migrants, who are desperately trying to get home because they have nowhere to go as industries have shut down in the pandemic. Or, consider Haiti, the poorest country in this hemisphere—close your eyes and think of garment workers who pack into tap-taps (those are public minibus transports) to ride to factories that are teeming with people, that on a good day, are dangerous, risky places to work—and, then, arriving at a factory to find that the employer is forcing workers to sign a piece of paper that says if the worker gets sick that worker is legally responsible for their illness. Shawna Bader-Blau, executive director of the Solidarity Center, joins me to paint the global picture. And, then, courtesy of the National Council for Occupational Safety and Health (National COSH), it's the Dirty Dozen of the Corona Pandemic, and a few other dishonorable mentions—companies like Amazon and Tyson Foods who, surprise, put profits over the safety and health of workers, along with big corporate lobbyists who work hard to block paid sick leave. I chat with Peter Dooley, a National COSH leading workplace safety and health expert, about the Dirty Dozen, and we also discuss a model framework for how to make sure workers stay safe in the pandemic.

In today’s episode, I had the distinct pleasure of chatting with Curtis McGown, Executive Director at Godspeed Resources Connection (GRC). He is a licensed mental health professional and has experience providing mental health services to quite a few different populations. There are a TON of gems in this conversation so be sure to grab your notepad and pen! Robert and Kendall discuss a passage from the book of Acts that shows how the Apostle Paul handled disruptions and challenges on his missionary journey.
Jim Marsh is the Dean of Student Health and Wellness, and Executive Director for Counseling Services at Baylor University. We asked Jim to share with us about some of his observations on the decrease in resiliency among incoming college students over the years. Though his work is not with Global Workers, he gives us some language to address areas of lack in Global Worker resiliency as well as helpful interventions that are just as poignant to us as they are to the students at Baylor. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/antioch-resiliency/message

Joseph Fuller, professor at Harvard Business School, says that the story we hear about workers being afraid for the future of their jobs might not be right. In surveying 11,000 people in lower-income and middle-skills jobs and 6,500 managers across 11 countries, Fuller discovered that, contrary to what bosses believe, many employees are excited about new technologies and willing to be trained in new skills. But they don't always know what they need to learn or how to access and pay for it. Organizations can do a better job of identifying the skills gaps they have or will soon face and using their existing workforces to fill them. Fuller's project is a joint venture between the HBS Project on Managing the Future of Work and the Boston Consulting Group’s Henderson Institute. He's a co-author of the HBR article “Your Workforce is More Adaptable Than You Think."
Season 3 of the Here & There Podcast is finally "in the books" as they say! What began as more here & here ended as it should have: here & there. Sheldon and his crew of Armitages have been shipped safely from Canada back to #Slovakia and all is well again in the world. Or is it? Did Sheldon have a mid-life crisis whilst on home assignment? Are his best years and most significant moments in his rear-view mirror? How hard is re-entry after 6 months away? Can he still do this Global Worker thing? Did Slovakia even want them back? Will there be a Season 4? (most important question in the list) Unbeknownst to him, our season finale episode has also doubled as our last in the mid-life crisis series. Tune in to find out if we're pulling his GW Membership or if he's back in the missionary saddle for another kick at the can (sans sabbatical!). Listener, your faithfulness has earned you another jewel in your already massive crown, so thanks again for listening this season...here and there! ️️️️ #seasonfinale #hereandhere #hereandthere #midlifecrisis #fouroffour #seasonfourandnomore
***WARNING: Longer than usual #HnTPodcast post, even longer podcast following. For as long as I can remember, I have been keeping #secrets. That being said, there's nothing I've found more freeing than finally opening up and sharing a failure or struggle with someone who I knew would love me in spite of my secret coming out into the light. But if trading secrets for honesty is so liberating, then why is it so difficult? In my case and many others, it is because of #shame. In his book Jesus Is Better Than You Imagined, Jonathan Merritt wrote: "Secrets draw their power from shame. I convince myself that I am too messed-up, too tainted, or too tarnished for others to accept. Or maybe people will think I am a fraud. As I believe these lies, shame grows into fear, which is almost always at some level, fear that if others truly know me, they won't love me. Or at least love me as much or in the same way. In order to release my secrets, I must uncurl my white-knuckled fingers from deep desires: My desire to be perfect. My desire to be liked. My desire to be in control. My desire to be successful." "Shame keeps us from telling our own stories and prevents us from listening to others tell their stories," says Brené Brown. "We silence our voices and keep our secrets out of the fear of disconnection." In the end, shame steals the very thing it promises: meaningful, authentic connections with others. Pursuing a life of honesty means to reveal who I truly am and assert that my #story too belongs at the table. During #Segue2017 Tier II, Joel and Avin Reimer bravely shared their family's story of working through Joel's sex addiction while serving in South East Asia as Global Workers. I can't thank them enough for their #courage in opening up about this painful time in their lives, and for sharing how they are working through it together. With their permission, we recorded this 90-minute session for a Here and There Podcast so other GWs could learn from their story, be encouraged to open up about their challenges, and get help where and when they need it. We know it's a longer-than-usual podcast, but in order to preserve the integrity of their full story (bad and good), we're presenting it to you entirely in one piece. The pause button is your friend!
According to Leanne Toews McAlister, Zoe is the Greek word for "life". When she launched The Zoe Network a few years ago, it was her goal to expose our fellowship to the mission activities of our Global Workers who were "bringing life" to women around the globe through their acts of service. Sheldon and Matt ran into Leanne at #Segue 2017 who was "sans Darcy" at the time and asked her all about The Zoe Network's inception and first few years of supporting projects that empower women and bring spiritual transformation to whole communities. The time for DREAMING is over, and Leanne is imploring people to get off the couch and GET REAL with women! Hope you enjoy the latest edition of the #HnTPodcast. #dreamsmaller #thinksmaller #linkarms #smallprojects #smallthingsconsistently
Raising #kids is tough work. I know, because I'm currently co-raising two delightful teen-aged monsters. Raising kids across cultures is even tougher work. This too I know, because I've listened carefully to Global Worker families share openly about raising their third-culture kids and #teens for the past 8 years. Sitting at my kitchen table a few weeks ago, I had the privilege of interrogating the Forgotten Armitage Children of #Slovakia about Global Worker kid life and growing up between two worlds. Like all good pods with kids, you'll love the honesty, hilarity, maturity and calamity that ensues on the latest edition of the Here and (T)here Podcast. One thing you'll agree on is that Sheldon and Anna are doing a fantastic job as GW #parents and raising their kids in a beautiful culturally blended family destined to change the world. Grab a juice bar lady drink and have a listen!
Ah, Missionary Care. Probably the single most debated issue I have discussed with Global Workers over the years. Some GWs need a little, others, a lot. Many missionaries feel well supported by their regional leadership and/or the home team, and some wonder if anyone knows they're still out there! While Melissa Williams (- the Melissa + a Scott) was hanging out at the Missionary Guest House for a couple of days a few weeks ago, we chatted about this topic, and Scott shared some creative "care" ideas with me. The opinions expressed by Scott and myself in this podcast are those of a GW and former Missionary Care Guy and do not necessarily reflect your opinion or the official policy or position of any sending agency of the #PAOC. There, we disclaimed it, now you can safely listen to it! #missionarycare #membercare #haveyoursay #HnTpodcast
Here & (T)here is getting out of the studio and taking this show on the ROAD! Join us (Anna and Sheldon) as we embark on the adventure that is ITINERATION. We start in Vancouver, head to Osoyoos, go up to Trail, stop in Banff, go to Edmonton and somewhere along the line end up with a $350 speeding ticket. Along the way we sample new cuisine, discover outdoor hot tubs, see the Rockies, lay some smack down on Alberta highways, talk to the newest member of the Eurasia Lead Team, Cal Anthony, and see so much more... This podcast is as epic as the trip we went on...and we know it one that most Global Workers can identify with. Thankfully It's not as long as a Canadian highway but it might be just long enough for your next commute to where it is you are global working. This podcast is 100% true and 100% Matt Janes free (sad emoji).
Mid·life cri·sis: (noun) "an emotional crisis of identity and self-confidence that can occur in early middle age." Nice working definition, but who gets to define #crisis of identity and self-confidence? What's the exact number for "early middle age"? In an effort to bite off more that I can chew, I'm recording a series of podcasts with Global Workers who are or who have worked through some sort of transitional period in their adult lives. Ryan Salomons was the first to take a ride down Honesty Highway with me on the #HnTPodcast and talk about the difficult years while leading his family to #Ukraine and through the first 2 years. Did he have a mid-life crisis? Did it move him into mission? Was it an actual crisis? How did he handle the transition? Our discussion answers these questions and others. Thanks for listening here and (t)here! #midlifecrisis #oneoffour #hereandthere
The 'M' Word. Some people love it, others love to hate it. Early use of the word in Sheldon Armitage's childhood drove him to counseling as an adult. Of course, we're talking about the word "missionary" or as Darcy likes to say, "Global Workers". An article I recently shared on Facebook called "Why I Think it's Time to Retire the Word 'Missionary'" got people talking. Turns out, you might just be passionate about your title! Well, you talked about it, so Sheldon and I podded about it in the latest edition of the HnT Podcast. Have a listen and keep having your say in the comments. For now, I'm going to call you all #Globissionaries.
If there is anything Michael Brooks can give you advice about, it would be successful digital investment. With 15 years of experience in eCommerce, he has made it his mission to help others by finding new strategic business solutions through digital marketing and electronic payments. Now the founder of GoLance and Response CRM, Brooks is a strong believer in harmony, teamwork, loyalty, and partnership. Brooks has also published two books focused on digital currency, and is both an avid history buff and world traveler. Why is this important? Because I get the emails and phone calls all the time from people asking how on earth they can build their teams! Truth is that you can find great teammates a lot faster and easier than you think. We have a global economy and you have a whole globe full of talented people you might use on your team. I’ve talked about building teams before… lots of times. And I know it can be a confusing topic. Here’s the deal. You have to kiss a lot of frogs to find your teammate princes and princesses. I’m fortunate. My teams absolutely rock. But that didn’t happen overnight. And I didn’t know much about finding talent online. That’s where Michael’s businesses come in handy, especially www.GoLance.com. He says there are more reasons to build your team and business. It can’t be only about making money. It has to be about your purpose. What’s yours? Because we speak in superhero terms in this unique episode of the Cash Flow Diary podcast, this interview was extra-fun for me. Seriously, we talk about villains and heroes. Michael even tells us why he’d rather be Robin than Batman! As for Michael, he’s a digital payments superhero with such great information it’s gonna feel like you just got whisked away into the sky and away from the pain of dealing with all you’re dealing with right now as you make your way through a sea of team member candidates. Learn more. LISTEN NOW.
As a Global Worker, you probably feel like you're having an out-of-money experience at times. My pro bono financial advisor (AKA my father-in-law) told me that the quickest way to double my money is to fold it over and put it back in my pocket! #Money. Jesus talked a lot about it in the B-I-B-L-E, and this is our second Here & There Podcast on the subject...so it likely matters on some level to many of you. During #Segue I had the chance to sit down with a new GW to the #RAN family who's been coaching people on handling their money for a living. Her full identity is being withheld for her security, but her free advice is here for the taking. Remember, when you have too much month at the end of your money, you still might be richer than you think. #momoney #moproblems #PAOCpensionfund #Godsupply #RANitized
Turns out, breaking up is easy to do...at least when it comes to Global Workers and supporting churches! In the latest edition of the HnT Podcast and the long-awaited reunion of pod partners, I join Šel and Ännå and talk about the touchy subject of getting #dumped by a #partner church. If you're a GW who's been fed the proverbial, "It's not you, it's me" line by a #supporter before, you might want to tune in with an empathetic box of Kleenex and a notepad to take notes on how to "take it like a #Eurasian missionary" from the Armitages. In the end maybe it's not me, it's you!
For 10.5 years, Peter & Sandra McIntosh have served our South East Asia Region as Regional Directors living in Bangkok, #Thailand. A few months ago, they made the decision to #transition from Global Workers back to Canadian Pastors. In the latest edition of the Here & There Podcast, Matt had the chance to ask them all about the whole experience: from considering to praying to deciding to announcing to packing to #leaving to returning to re-starting. You'll enjoy their candid and honest thoughts about transitioning, and their awesome list of #returning observations! If you're considering returning to Canada soon or wondering what that time in your life will feel like in 25 years, have a listen and take some notes. Turns out, Friends Are Friends Forever. #michealwsmith #yeahyeah #searegion #RDs #ISM #passingthetorch #bethelottawa
Short-Term Missions. Some people love it, while others love to take swings at it like it's a piñata at a Mexican-themed Alpha small group party. There are Global Workers who host plenty of STM teams every year for a variety of reasons. A nameless few GWs wouldn't be caught dead inviting and hosting short-termers in their adopted cities and villages. Say what you want about STM teams - and in the latest edition of the Here & There Podcast Mark Crocker does - there's a way you can host and use STM teams with much more effectiveness than you are right now. Mark is one of our fellowship's most creative thinkers and provocative trainers, and many of you have had your deeply held beliefs about international work challenged by Mark at #Segue. I thoroughly enjoyed rekindling my bromance for mission with Mark on this podcast, and catching up on what he's been doing since launching STMleader.com. #shorttermmissions #longtermimpact #leadercertification #stmleaderDOTcom #africaisacountry
In the latest edition of the Here & There Podcast, we catch up with LAC Regional Director James "You Can Call Me Jim, But Don't Call Me Gus" Guskjolen in Panama and find out what lurks beneath the surface of his smooth but rugged #RD exterior. With his Norwegian heritage, his Prairie upbringing and his international gallivanting, you might wonder if he can remember who he is and what he does. Good news - he's passionate about Global Workers and loves serving you! Pour yourself a non-mood-altering piña colada and enjoy the conversation. #LAC #Panama #HnT
In the spirit of Christmas blockbuster movies we present the introduction of the Funder Games (brought to your by the HnT Podcast). That's right, 12 unsuspecting GWs have been harvested by Matt and Shel and placed into the arena where they will fight for survival (and funding). Listen in and cheer for your favourite Global Worker. And may the odds be ever in your favour. Also Matt and Shel talk about other stuff that's pretty cool like the fact that Shel is getting his first midtermer, Christmas prep has started, getting "swabbed" and of course podcasting mistakes. It's an epic podcast to help you get into the Christmas spirit.
The end is near! Before they posted their final podcast of the season next week, Sheldon and Matt wanted to chat with HnT Producer Scott Stiller, about how the Here & There Podcast comes together. Turns out, he's more than a pretty set of hands spinning dials and editing their faux-pas. He's a husband, father of 3, studio animator, pastor, blogger (http://fattheology.com/), and Ottawa Senators fan. If you make it to the end of this episode, he's got a message for Global Workers that you don't want to miss. #volunteerminister #bivocational #endisnear #onepodleft
We thought it would be best to let Johnny Cash introduce this week's special podcast guest:"There's a man goin' 'round takin' names. And he decides who to free and who to blameEverybody won't be treated all the same. There'll be a golden ladder reaching down. When the man comes around."This week we come into the presence of greatness as we interview "the man, the myth, the legend...the Big Cheese himself"...Murray Cornelius. He graciously shares his wisdom, answers Global Worker questions and agrees not to fire us (well Sheldon at least) for exposing missional secrets on the podcast.Plus we do an awesome Rapid Fire that you do not want to miss. Hear what Murray really thinks about...well...you have to listen to find out (but it does involve whether his favourite is M@ or Šel).Indeed: "the man has come to town" (at least to the Here & There Podcast).
A few weeks ago, one of my favourite Global Workers stopped in to stay a night in the Missionary Guest house en la Casa Janes. ScottandMelissa Williams (just Scott) was back in Canada briefly to spend time with family after a surprising death in the family. It was late, but fueled by cold nuts and Coke Zero, Scott spoke freely about being back in the saddle after a year on the Global Worker bench. It may have been the jet lag talking, but the conversation ebbed and flowed between serious and sarcastic while coming dangerously close to offering deep insights into #returning, #shorttermmission, #highercalling and #boatmurder. Take off your sombrero, lean back in tu hamaca, and have a listen to the latest edition of the HnT podcast today...or mañana! #uptoolate #prepareforsiesta #passtheguacamole #backonthefield
A message from PORTICO Community Church on Sunday March 01, 2015. From the sermon series 'PORTICO Global Missions'. For more information, visit www.theportico.ca
Ever wanted to know what goes on in the mind of a Regional Director? Do they hear God just a little more clearly than the average Global Worker like Jeremy Feser? Do they preach with signs and wonders following? Can they walk on water? Turn water into (insert mood-altering substance here)? Or do they put their Habs jersey on one arm at a time just like Mark Pope? Who do they go to for advice? Who are their heroes? Can they turn back time? After tossing back some Christian Chicken together, Matt Janes got answers to some of these questions from the new incoming Eurasia RD Stephen Hertzog. Look out Sheldon, there's some news buried in this episode that might make you nervous...or just work harder.
O Holy Night, The Here & There (Unofficial) Podcast for Global Workers has just delivered in time for #Christmas, it's 6th Episode - AKA The Christmas Show! The HnT Podcast is back, with a special edition called The Missionary Position On...Making A Comeback. In this long-form piece of journalism, Matt Janes got to ask Mark-John Haug the tough questions about getting back on the Global Worker horse (Aimee Heyer was not involved in the recording). Mark opens up about returning to #Tanzania after 32 years, leaving his kids behind in Canada, how he really feels about #Malawi, re-establishing partnerships, and who he likes better: Murray, or Cindy Cornelius. Brew yourself a few coffees or iced teas, Mark knows no short sentences. #makingacomeback #missionaryposition #twende @hntpodcast
Holy jingle bells! Sheldon Armitage and Matt Janes have just recorded Episode 5 of The Here & There (Unofficial) Podcast for Global Workers. Join šel & m@ as they talk turkey about pre-Christmas prep and share their regionally-inspired ratings for the safe consumption of media. Pour yourself an egg nog latté, cozy up to an open-air fire pit or air conditioning unit and enjoy the dulcet tones of your favourite cross-cultural pod-stars.
In Episode 3 of the Here & There Unofficial Podcast for Global Workers, Sheldon Armitage and Matt Janes chat about coffee, computers, and being "famous in Christian". That's 3 Cs...because we're Pentecostal and Jesus died for alliterationists too. We are excited to introduce a special edition of the Here & There Podcast called, "The Missionary Position". We are aiming to record one of these special editions each month, where we will look at the missionary position on issues facing global workers today, with guest appearances by real live Global Workers! (Sheldon doesn't count). In this first offering we talk with Peter and Patricia DeWit and discuss the Missionary Position On...Home Assignment.
