An episode from Liberty Behind Bars Ministry, a ministry serving the incarcerated across America located in Belfast, New York. The Scriptures : We believe that “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,” 2nd Timothy 3:16 by which we understand that the whole Bible “came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.” 2nd Peter 1:21.  The Scriptures, originally recorded by Spirit led men, have been faithfully translated and preserved in our English Language.  We believe the Authorized Version (A.V. 1611) is infallible and selfless: our final authority for all matters of faith and practice. Christ's Advent: We believe that the eternal Son of God came into this world that He might manifest God to men, fulfill prophecy, and become the Redeemer of a lost world. He was born of a virgin, conceived by the Holy Ghost, received a human body, and a sinless nature.Salvation: We believe that, owing to death through sin, no one can enter the Kingdom of God unless born again. This redemption has been accomplished solely by the blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, who was made to be sin, dying in our stead, and that He was bodily and physically raised from the dead for our justification. We believe that the new birth of the believer is an act of the Holy Ghost and comes only through individual faith in Christ. The Church: We believe that God has ordained that through the local church the Gospel of Jesus Christ is to be spread and that it is the duty of everyone who is born again to seek out a local fellowship for the furtherance of the Gospel and his own edification. I spent half of my life in and out of jails, prisons, rehabs, and other facilities.  Unfortunately, the programs that were offered did not help me to become a productive member of society, it just made me a better inmate.  Whatchanged me, was a new life in Jesus Christ and reading/studying a King James Bible. Many prisons, jails, and other institutions have heard from many of their inmates that they are changed due to religion. However, most are seen back within the next year or two. As God gave Moses a burden for the Children of Israel, so God gave me a burden for those in jails and prisons. Churches send missionaries to foreign countries, in support, hopes and prayers, they can win the nationals to Jesus, train them and then send the nationals back to their own people. This is what Jesus has done for me. He saved me out of this life of crimes and addiction, and now sends me back to my people who are in jails/prisons, to win them to Christ and send them back to their own peopleThis is where Liberty Behind Bars Ministry steps in.  Not only do we minister to those behind the jail walls we help them transition into society; differently than they did in the past.  The goal is to break the cycle of recidicism and help people have a changed life in Jesus Christ.  I have my Doctorate in Christian Biblical Counseling and use this knowledge to not only help those within the jail/prison walls, but also to support their family members.  You may also write to us at:Liberty Behind Bars MinistryP.O. Sergio Carriel is a Brazilian missionary who has been serving in Africa for 19 years, starting in Mozambique and then expanding to other African countries like Malawi, Uganda, South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Kenya. He has experienced many miracles and conversions during his evangelistic crusades in Africa, including healings and deliverance from demonic oppression. Carriel believes God is raising up a missionary force from Brazil to go to other nations, and he wants to inspire and encourage more Brazilian youth to become evangelists and missionaries. He has faced challenges in getting financial support from churches in Brazil, who often focus more on local needs rather than global missions. Carriel hopes to see the Brazilian church invest more in sending missionaries worldwide.

Doing Something for God: The Missionary Call of Every Christian Today's Homily for the Feast of St. Luke the Evangelist . . . . . . reminds us that, like the 72 disciples Jesus sent out, we are all called to be missionaries. This missionary call doesn't necessarily mean traveling abroad . . . it begins in our own homes and communities. Faith and Mission The Homily illustrates this by comparing evangelization to talking about a favorite sport: we naturally speak about what we love. If we truly love Jesus, we should talk about Him with our family and friends and show His presence through our actions. Jesus sends His disciples in pairs, highlighting that faith is lived in community, not isolation. As followers of Christ, we are called to bring peace wherever we go and to represent God in our words and deeds. Tuesday of the Twenty-ninth Week in Ordinary Time IOctober 21, 2025  Hello and welcome to the Word, bringing you the Good News of Jesus Christ every day from the Redemptorists of the Baltimore Province. I am Fr. Karl Esker from the Basilica of our Lady of Perpetual Help in Brooklyn, NY. Today is Tuesday of the Twenty-ninth Week in Ordinary Time. Our reading today is from the holy gospel according to Luke Jesus said to his disciples: "Gird your loins and light your lamps and be like servants who await their master's return from a wedding, ready to open immediately when he comes and knocks. Blessed are those servants whom the master finds vigilant on his arrival. Amen, I say to you, he will gird himself, have them recline at table, and proceed to wait on them. And should he come in the second or third watch and find them prepared in this way, blessed are those servants."The gospel of the Lord. Homily In the gospel we hear Jesus tell his disciples: "Gird your loins and light your lamps and be like servants who await their master's return from a wedding, ready to open immediately when he comes and knocks.” The master, of course, is Jesus himself who comes knocking at our hearts. We open our hearts, by welcoming him into our lives and trying to live in radical obedience to the Father as he did, repeating with him in today's Psalm: “To do your will, O my God, is my delight, and your law is within my heart!” Jesus taught that the Law can be summed up as Love of God and Love of Neighbor. Or, as John the Evangelist interprets it, “Love one another as I have love you.” Jesus is the expression of God the Father's love and mercy toward every human being. Jesus' life was service to others. When his disciples argued among themselves over authority, he told them: “let the greatest among you be as the youngest, and the leader as the servant. ... I am among you as the one who serves.” He always had time to attend the sick, to cast out demons and make people whole. He accepted dinner invitations from the Pharisees, and he also visited the homes of outcasts, like tax collectors and people considered sinners. He brought the good news of salvation to all, not just in word, but also in deed; and he asks the same of us. As we hear in the parable of the last judgment: “whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.” When Jesus comes knocking at the door of our hearts, he does so through other people who call on us in their need. Because of our human limitations, there will be times we can do little, but we must respect the humanity of the one in front of us. In our present polarized society this can be difficult. We are constantly being bombarded by messages that dehumanize certain groups for political purposes, and we may find it frightening to stand up for the gospel message of love and mercy as disciples of Jesus Christ. St. Paul, in his letter to the Romans tells us not to fear, because Jesus has already won the battle. Comparing Adam and Jesus, he declares: “If by that one person's transgression the many died, how much more did the grace of God and the gracious gift of the one man Jesus Christ overflow for the many.” We may have to face our moments of failure, but we can rise above our sinfulness, because “Where sin increased, grace overflowed all the more, so that, ... grace might reign through justification for eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” There is a joy that awaits those who are faithful in opening the doors of their hearts to the poor and marginalized. Jesus says that “he will gird himself, have them recline at table, and proceed to wait on them.” This is an image of the heavenly banquet, but it all begins here. The love and welcome we share in this life carries over into eternal life. It sounds like one great party. May we all meet there. May God bless you. Fr. Karl E. Holy Apostle and Evangelist St Luke

Saint of the Day

He was a physician from Antioch, a disciple and traveling-companion of the Apostle Paul, who refers to him as the 'beloved physician.' He wrote not only his Gospel but the Acts of the Apostles, dedicating both to Theophilus, who according to one tradition was the Governor of Achaia, a convert. Much of the Acts of the Apostles is written in the first person, describing his own travels with the St Paul. He lived to an old age and died in Achaia, possibly in Patras. Most ancient authors say that he died as a Martyr. Church traditions about St Luke are somewhat contradictory. According to many, he was one of the Seventy and thus an eye-witness to Christ's ministry on earth. (He is usually considered to be the companion of St Cleopas on the Road to Emmaus). According to others, he never met Christ himself but was converted by the preaching of the Apostle Paul. Church tradition holds that St Luke was the first iconographer, and painted an image of the Most Holy Theotokos from life. He is considered the patron of iconographers. Several icons attributed to St Luke himself are still in existence.

Gospel Luke 10:1-9 The Lord Jesus appointed seventy-two disciples whom he sent ahead of him in pairs to every town and place he intended to visit. He said to them, "The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest. Go on your way; behold, I am sending you like lambs among wolves. Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals; and greet no one along the way. Into whatever house you enter, first say, 'Peace to this household.' If a peaceful person lives there, your peace will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you. Stay in the same house and eat and drink what is offered to you, for the laborer deserves payment. Do not move about from one house to another. Whatever town you enter and they welcome you, eat what is set before you, cure the sick in it and say to them, 'The Kingdom of God is at hand for you.'" Reflection The 72 represent the future church. Communities of people that have an understanding, a way of life that becomes attractive to other people and they want to know about it, and they need to learn about it. And what he's saying is there's healing power in my message, and I want you to share it. But what's so interesting, it's not like he sends out these 72 and he expects them to reach 50 homes a piece, or something. No, you go to one house, a house where someone there understands the peace that comes with the kingdom, and build on that person. It's like the kingdom of God spreads very naturally from one encounter to another, from one conversation to another. It's a beautiful image of the church and how it works. It's so organic and natural and nothing can stop it. Closing Prayer Father, open us always to the ways in which we can do the work that we are called to do. When we make it somehow too obvious or too intense, it doesn't work. It's something that flows from my heart to your heart, your heart to my heart in the relationships that we have. And that's where it all works. It's about love. It's about compassion. It's about understanding. And it's not about judgment or condemnation. So bless us with this gift of carrying your message through our hearts. And we ask this in Jesus' name, Amen. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Friends of the Rosary,Today, October 18th, the Catholic Church celebrates the Feast of St. Luke, the author of the third Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles. He was a physician, born in Antioch, Syria, and he accompanied St. Paul on part of his missionary travels and during his stay in prison in Rome, as recorded in the Acts, which also details the life of the early Christian communities. He was a man of letters and an artist painting the Blessed Virgin's portrait, although he never met Mary and Jesus in the flesh. His name means "bringer of light" (= Luke).St. Luke's Gospel is the Gospel of the Merciful Heart of Jesus and “Paul's Gospel", as well.It emphasizes that Christ is the salvation of all men, and it recounts some of our Lord's most moving parables, like those of the lost sheep and the prodigal son.Ave Maria!Come, Holy Spirit, come!To Jesus through Mary! Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will. Please give us the grace to respond with joy!+ Mikel Amigot w/ María Blanca | RosaryNetwork.com, New YorkEnhance your faith with the new Holy Rosary University app:Apple iOS | New! Read OnlineThe Lord Jesus appointed seventy-two disciples whom he sent ahead of him in pairs to every town and place he intended to visit. He said to them, “The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest.” Luke 10:1–2Saint Luke, whom we honor today, was a true evangelist. As an evangelist, he followed the inspiration from our Lord and was used to bring God's saving message to the ends of the earth. And there is little doubt that his ministry will continue to have a transforming effect on the lives of many until the end of the world. Tradition states that Saint Luke became a martyr, being hanged on an olive tree. He is identified in the New Testament as a physician and as a disciple of Saint Paul. Both the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles are attributed to him.Saint Luke is often spoken of as an evangelist to the gentiles. His Gospel was written in such a way that it didn't presume a full understanding of the Jewish faith and customs. Therefore, it is believed to have been primarily written for those who are not of Jewish origin. Thus, the life and mission of Saint Luke must remind us that the Gospel needs to be shared with all people, especially with those who do not have a deep and sustaining relationship with God.In today's Gospel from Saint Luke, we read that Jesus sent seventy-two disciples “to every town and place he intended to visit.” Only Luke mentions the larger scale sending of seventy-two disciples. The other Gospels only mention the sending of the Twelve. Though many of these seventy-two disciples would have gone to Jewish territory, some would have unquestionably gone to non-Jewish territory. The mission of these seventy-two was to prepare everyone they encountered for the preaching of Jesus and for the establishment of the Kingdom of God.As we honor Saint Luke today and read this passage from his Gospel, we are reminded that we are all sent by our Lord. We are sent to those who share our faith, such as family, friends and fellow parishioners. We are sent to love them and do all we can to help deepen their faith and love of God. But we are also called to share the Gospel with those who do not yet know Jesus as their Savior. There are so many people we encounter every day who have never truly met our Lord. Are there people in your life that God is calling you to reach out to? Who do you know that God may be calling you to share the Gospel with? Reflect, today, upon the fact that the Gospel is meant for everyone. Speak to our Lord and tell Him that you are ready and willing to be used by Him to bring His saving message to others. As you do so, wait on the Lord, listen to His inspiration, and respond when He calls. If someone comes to mind whom you sense God is calling you to evangelize, begin to pray for that person. Pray for them every day and be attentive to any inspiration God gives you to share His love and saving message with them. Do not be afraid to be an evangelist like Saint Luke. Doing so might make an eternal difference in someone's life. My saving Lord, You sent Your disciples on a mission to share Your saving message with all. Today I especially thank You for the life and ministry of Saint Luke. Please use me, dear Lord, to imitate his wonderful example and to share Your glorious life with others. Please lead me and inspire me to especially reach out to those whom You have put into my life. Jesus, I trust in You.  Image: Window: workshop of Franz Borgias Mayer (1848–1926); Photo: Andreas Praefcke, Public domain, via Wikimedia CommonsSource of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2025 My Catholic Life!
