Imagine setting out alone to walk almost 500 kilometres across some of the most remote and challenging terrain in Europe. That's exactly what Clare man Dermot Cosgrove is doing right now as he treks across Iceland from Húsavík in the north to Vík on the south coast, a journey expected to take 21 days. Originally from Ennis and now living in Kilkee, Dermot is undertaking the challenge to raise funds for Irish Dogs for the Disabled, a charity that provides specially trained assistance dogs free of charge to children and adults with physical disabilities. A former member of the French Foreign Legion and no stranger to adventure, Dermot joined Alan Morrissey from Iceland to tell us about the journey so far and the cause driving him forward. New poll has James Talarico (D) leading Ken Paxton (R) by 3 points — 47% to 44% — in the Texas Senate race. But Kalshi (where people bet real money) currently favors Paxton by around 60%. The reason, Texas remains solidly red, and betting markets have no incentive to flatter anyone. JD Rucker fills in for Wendy!
The friends and family round is how most founders raise their first capital — but it's also where the most relationships get damaged. If you don't structure it right, you can accidentally screw over the people trying to help you, torpedo your next funding round, and make every family gathering awkward for years. In this episode, I break down exactly how to talk to your friends and family about investing, how to structure the deal using a SAFE (Simple Agreement for Future Equity), and the ethical responsibilities you have when your investors trust you more than they understand the deal. Plus, I'll give you a tool you can send directly to your prospective investors that explains everything they need to know — from someone with no conflict of interest.Whether you're pre-revenue, pre-product, or just trying to figure out how to ask your parents for startup capital without ruining Thanksgiving, this episode has you covered.LinksBlog post: https://ftb.bz/131B YouTube: https://ftb.bz/131V Free Startup Fundraising Toolkit: https://ftb.bz/raise-yt Video to share with your F&F investors: https://ftb.bz/friends-and-family-explainer Y Combinator SAFE templates: https://www.ycombinator.com/documents

Got a question about the show? Click here & Send us a text! Thanks for tuning in to another episode of The Building Talks Podcast. This one is a little different......and honestly, a little mad.In this special episode, I sit down with Dave Woolsey, General Manager of Renascent in Victoria, who is currently in the middle of riding a push bike (like, a real bike, on the road) from Perth to Melbourne over just 14 days, covering more than 3,500km, all to raise money and awareness for Carrie Bickmore's Beanies for Brain Cancer foundation. What makes this challenge even more ridiculous is that Dave hadn't seriously ridden a bike in almost six years before deciding to commit to it.This conversation goes well beyond cycling. We get into mindset, discipline, suffering, resilience, fatherhood, purpose, and the mental battle that comes with voluntarily putting yourself through discomfort for something bigger than yourself.Dave speaks openly about the emotional driver behind the challenge, particularly the impact brain cancer has on Australian families and children, and why this cause hit home hard enough for him to dedicate months of training and two weeks of pain to raising money for it.We also unpack the psychology behind endurance challenges, the conversations you have with yourself when your body wants to stop, and how leadership, pressure, and resilience from the construction industry strangely prepares people for challenges like this. There are some laughs in there too, including discussions around lycra, saddle soreness, mental breakdowns in the Nullarbor, and the reality of trying to train for elite endurance while balancing work, leadership and family life.More than anything though, this is a conversation about perspective, purpose, and proving to yourself that you're capable of more than you think.Takeaways:✅ Why Dave committed to riding 3,500km for brain cancer research✅ The mental side of endurance and suffering✅ How purpose changes your ability to push through pain✅ Leadership, resilience, and mindset under pressure✅ The emotional impact of brain cancer on families✅ Why ordinary people are capable of extraordinary thingsChapters:00:00 The Journey Begins: A Brother's Challenge05:17 The Route and the Goal: Riding Across Australia08:15 The Physical and Mental Challenge: Overcoming Obstacles14:05 Mindset and Motivation: The Importance of Goals16:36 Breaking the Routine: Finding Balance in Life22:33 Managing Stress Through Physical Activity30:04Mental Resilience and Emotional Support34:48 Raising Awareness for Brain Cancer ResearchIf you'd like to support Dave's ride and help raise money for brain cancer research, head to:p2m4bc.COM - to follow his journey,And if you're keen to donate, head to:https://fundraise.carriesbeanies4braincancer.com/fundraisers/davidw/perth-to-melb-4-bcEvery donation genuinely helps! The views and information shared in this podcast are for general purposes only and do not constitute legal or professional advice. Ocean conservation funding is one of the biggest challenges facing nonprofits today. In this episode of How to Protect the Ocean, Andrew Lewin speaks with nonprofit consultant James Misner about why so many mission-driven organizations struggle to raise money, even when their work is urgent and important. James explains why grants alone are not enough, why donors need to see the human connection behind ocean conservation, and why storytelling, relationships, and clear communication matter just as much as the science. This conversation is essential for ocean nonprofits, conservation professionals, science communicators, and anyone trying to build long-term support for protecting the ocean. The Conservation Minister says the new planned reforms of conservation law will benefit Kiwi businesses and biodiversity. It lays the groundwork for reinvesting revenue from charging international tourists - estimated at about $60 million a year - back into conservation land. It also speeds up the Department of Conservation signing off leases and permits. Minister Tama Potaka says this will modernise legislation that was in need of an update. In this episode of Konnected Minds, Derrick Abaitey sits down with business consultant and Fundvestor founder Diane Akuffo - the woman behind one of the highest investor success rates in Ghana (80%). She breaks down EXACTLY how to: ✅ Build a pitch deck investors actually take seriously ✅ Make your business "investor-ready" (most Ghanaian businesses are NOT) ✅ Choose between equity, SAFE notes, and convertible loans ✅ Avoid the 60/40 trap that cost one founder his entire business ✅ Find investors — and what to send them BEFORE you reach out ✅ Use the AI tool that's reviewing pitch decks in seconds (Mangro AI)
After success of the Sunchasers Charity Cycle last year which raised over €14,000 for charity, they have decided to go again this year. Once again the route is Dublin to Galway and their arrival this year will coincide with Connacht and Munster at Dexcom Stadium on May 9th. An "Extra Mile" Cycle will take place from Athlone Springs Hotel to Curraghboy National School. Or On the 9th of May at 2 pm, by taking part in The "Last Leg" Cycle from The Filling Station, Athenry into Eyre Square and then up to Dexcom Stadium. Fear not! To raise money, you and your fellow board members don't have to cold call strangers (or worse, friends), or suffer through awkward donor coffees where you feel like the people at the table next to you are eavesdropping on your shaky pitch. Nope. There's an alternative. It's a heck of a lot easier for board members to do things that support the fundraising efforts of the organization, rather than do something terrifying they loathe. Below is a list of 21 things board members with no fundraising experience can do to support the fundraising efforts of the organizations they care so much about. And for those board members who love to ask for money, give them a list of people to call and meet, and let them work their magic. For everyone else, have them choose a few things from the list below. Their contributions will lower the work burden of the fundraising staff and provide valuable resources and impact that will ultimately help raise more money. Listen in and learn!

In this episode of Fund/Build/Scale, Sentry co-founder David Cramer joins host Walter Thompson for a candid, wide-ranging conversation about what founders actually struggle with — and why so much conventional startup advice falls apart in practice. David shares how he dropped out of high school, taught himself to code, and turned a side project into Sentry, the error-tracking platform now used by millions of developers. From there, the conversation moves into the realities of venture capital, including why access and credibility matter more than most founders want to admit, and why you don't raise venture money on small ambitions. They dig into the difference between building technology and building a business, the pricing mistakes that nearly sank an otherwise healthy company, and why charging money isn't enough — you have to charge enough. David also explains why endurance and effort matter more than cleverness, and why many startups fail simply because founders stop pushing too soon. The episode closes with a rarely discussed topic: what you're really buying when you advertise a tech company. Drawing on Sentry's billboards and transit ads across Silicon Valley, David explains why attention often matters more than explanation — and why brand isn't something founders can outsource. By design, this conversation is frank, opinionated, and unfiltered. RUNTIME 55:40 EPISODE BREAKDOWN (1:56) "I've met a lot of Stanford grads that have not gotten very far in life." His solution was to start a Dirt Track Car Race and decided to call it FIGHT FOR A KID. His first race in 2024 attracted 80 cars on a track that normally had 30 cars race each weekend. By 2025, 106 cars entered and over $12,000 was raised in honor of kids like Haley who were going through their individual cancer battles. Tony and James Cumby, the father of 12 year old Brailynn Cumby who I spoke with on my Podcast on Christmas Day about her Ewings Sarcoma battle, will talk about this race and the expansion plans they have for it beginning in September when their next race is scheduled.

The diagnosis hit hard. Treatments were grueling—chemo, a stem cell transplant—but today, she’s in remission. Now, McNall is running as part of the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation team, aiming to raise $3,000 for research. “This isn’t just a race,” he says. “It’s for her.” We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Break: Ingles Markets 6 STORY 4: Veterans Day celebrations in Cobb County Veterans Day is almost here, and Cobb County is pulling out all the stops to honor those who’ve served. From parades to luncheons, there’s something for everyone leading up to Nov. 11. Veterans Day Parade on Nov. 8 will feature marching bands, floats, and a ceremony in Glover Park. And on Nov. 11, ceremonies in Acworth, Austell, Powder Springs, and Smyrna will pay tribute with speakers, color guards, and heartfelt moments. There are countless ways to show gratitude next week. STORY 5: Delays likely for distribution of government food benefits to the hungry For one in eight Georgians, the wait for food assistance just got longer—and more uncertain. SNAP benefits, which usually roll out between the 5th and 23rd of each month, are delayed, leaving families in limbo. At Goodr Community Market in Atlanta, owner Jasmine Crowe-Houston has already heard from customers. “People are coming in saying, ‘I always get my benefits on the 5th—nothing today.’” The delay stems from the government shutdown, now in its 36th day. USDA guidance issued Tuesday slashed funding to half the usual amount, forcing states to scramble to recalibrate systems. Food banks like Second Harvest of South Georgia are bracing for impact, but as Eliza McCall put it, “SNAP feeds nine people for every one we serve. We can’t fill that gap.” Meanwhile, confusion reigns. A Trump social media post suggested benefits might stop entirely, though the White House later clarified payments are coming—just slowly. For 1.4 million Georgians, that’s cold comfort. Hunger doesn’t wait. And now here is Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on milk We’ll have closing comments after this. In a recent episode of the Main Street Business Podcast, where I was honored to be a guest with Mark J. Kohler, we tackled one of the biggest challenges facing real estate investors right now: Raising capital in today's uncertain market. For years, it was easy… A decent pro forma and a little confidence could get you funded. But in 2025? Investors are nervous, capital is cautious, and the rules of the game have changed. In this episode, we dig into: Why most investors are frozen in fear (and how to break through) The difference between 506(b) and 506(c) — and why it matters more than ever How I raised over $100M using systems, not sales pitches What makes LPs say “yes” (even when the market says “no”) And how to attract high-net-worth capital… even if you're not an “influencer” This was originally released as a guest episode on the Main Street Business Podcast, but it was so packed with insights we decided to repost it on Cash Flow Connections. If you're trying to raise capital right now — or plan to — this is required listening. Talk soon, Hunter Thompson Interested in learning how to take your capital raising game to the next level?
