Often when we think of culture, the more external aspects come to mind - music, art, types of clothing, life rituals, and the like. But, what frequently goes unnoticed are the more fundamental nuances of culture - the values, priorities, and stories that radically influence the way a group of people see and interact with the world. What are some of those subtle cultural traits and how do they affect the ways missionaries communicate the Gospel?Today we'll be speaking with Matt Henning. Matt works in ministry in the Chicagoland region and is currently a Ph.D. candidate in Intercultural Studies at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. In addition to his studies, he brings a wealth of experience in understanding culture having lived and served many years overseas. Helen Todd was born and raised under Communism, so she understands what it's like to know nothing of God and yet long to discover Him. You, too, can fulfill the Great Commission! All God needs is your “yes”. They discuss: Helen's story of how she came to know Jesus as a teenager in the former Soviet Union Why the Christians desperately need to put their hands to the work of the Harvest A miraculous story of how God opened the door for them to minister in China with official permission How they started taking medical missions and meeting the physical needs of people to give them an opportunity to meet Jesus How YOU can apply to be part of a team! Missions have been a part of the Christian church for centuries. From the early Christian apostles who traveled far and wide to spread their message, to modern-day missionaries who work to help communities in need around the world, missions have played a crucial role in sharing the good news of the gospel message. But what is the purpose of missions? Why must the church feel the need to send people to other parts of the world to spread their message? And what impact do these missions have on the communities they serve? In this episode, we will be talking with Rev. Bryan Webb. Bryan has served as a missionary with Assembly of God World Missions for over twenty-five years. Currently he serves as Area Directors for Pacific Oceania with Assemblies of God World Missions and oversee the team of missionaries serving in the twenty-three nations of the Pacific. Bryan is also the author of several books about missions which chronicle his missionary life.

Today's conversation is with Ken Fifer, the missions pastor at Bent Tree Bible Fellowship in Carrollton, Texas. Bent Tree Bible Fellowship believes in missions and has many different opportunities for their members to engage in. Ken shares how they work to help their members find their fit in missions while honoring the needs of the churches and communities they serve in. Want to learn how your church can partner with OneChild to bring HOPE to kids living in hard Places? Click Here!First, they understand that each member of Bent Tree has a unique gift and calling. It's not about trying to squeeze a member into a program. It's about helping them find the right fit. Second, the churches and communities Bent Tree serves in aren't one size fits all either. Bent Tree works to find ways to support and strengthen the local churches in these countries. And they're OK with stepping away if they don't see a way they can help without hurting. And finally, this approach requires both Ken and Bent Tree and the churches and countries they serve to take time to really let the Holy Spirit do His work. There's no reason to try to force something to happen just to say there's a partnership in place. Learn more about Bent Tree Bible FellowshipLearn more about OneChild HERE!
Upon the French invasion of Algeria in 1830, the territory quickly became a placeholder for French dreams, debates, and experiments in social engineering, economic development and even religious culture. Missionaries and Jesuit priests sent to minister to the new French colonial population there commented favorably on Arab Muslims' religiosity, seeing in it both the possibility of effective missionization and an example of how religion and civil society might work together. After decades of failed missionary efforts, violent conquest and conflict, and influential international events, liberal Catholics in Algeria like the Bishop Charles Lavigerie—founder of the White Fathers—had abandoned active evangelization and instead embraced a visceral and violent rejection of racialized Islam as the antithesis of French civilization. These transitionary decades serve as the backdrop to Joseph W. Peterson's wide-ranging and deeply human book, Sacred Rivals: Catholic Missions and the Making of Islam in Nineteenth-century France and Algeria (Oxford UP, 2022). In it, he tells that stories of French Catholic missionaries and the Algerian men and women with whom they interacted, exploring the gray areas between faith and politics, between colonial ideology and colonized experience. Peterson balances micro-historical approaches with an awareness of global events to tell a new story about the role of religion in the development of the French civilizing mission, colonial ethnography and racial pseudo-science, as well as in the construction of regimes of legal difference. Sacred Rivals is deeply readable book and will be of interest to scholars of French Algeria, colonialism, and all those interested in the long and complex history of Christianity and Islam. Sarah K. Miles is a PhD Candidate in History at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill who specializes in global francophone history and the history of the French Left. David and Stephanie Palusky are the founders of Renew World Outreach, which provides innovative technology to missions organizations to enable the gospel to reach the hardest to reach places. David, an electrical engineer by training, and Stephanie first dove into the technology realm on the mission field to reach a specific people group that God had laid on their hearts. They realized that solar power could allow them to reach this particular remote Amazon tribe with the Jesus Film. From this small seed, they began to develop more solar projectors to provide to other agencies. As Renew continued to grow, they began to develop other products, such as the LightStream, which acts like a local wifi hotspot to distribute the bible, audio, and video in crowds and large public places. While Renew started out as a for-profit company, David and Stephnie later went on to give up ownership in order to expand the impact of the organization. And God blessed their generosity by multiplying the impact of Renew across the world. In addition to the power of technology, David and Stephanie share countless stories of faith. They have seen God work in incredible ways and we were amazed at some of the things they have seen. David and Stephanie had plenty to say on topics including: How technology had radically changed the missions landscape Many of the specific devices that Renew has developed What technology looks like in action with plenty of stories from the field The impact of ministry partnerships in hastening the spread of the gospel The remaining barriers to bringing the gospel to everyone everywhere Listen now to hear all they had to share, you won't want to miss this one! The ends of the earth are the ultimate destination of the Great Commission. Today, God has brought the ends of the earth to us. Through diaspora communities in global gateway cities, we can reach the ends of the earth as never before.
Santonio Hill was working in ministry in Philadelphia. As that was coming to an end he began applying and preparing for nursing school during quarantine. After the death of George Floyd, Santonio was inspired to be a boots-on-the-ground missionary making a difference, even if only in one teen's life that has to live in the shadows of America. Santonio wanted to put an end to the idea of merely surviving, and felt called to teach teens how to thrive. He is the assistant director of recruitment for Vagabond Missions, which has 13 missions across eight states. Vagabond Missions understands that inner-city teens confront a cycle of neglect, violence, and broken family life. Vagabond Missions introduces them to Jesus and a loving community by mobilizing missionaries. Through outreach, every inner-city teen can be known, loved, and experience hope for their lives.
