Update: June 5, 2020:Three years ago, we started this episode of the podcast by saying; not talking about racism is not a solution. We sought to have a conversation about dismantling racism in education after a Heinemann Fellows panel on the subject. As we listen to this conversation through the lens of 2020, it’s now not enough to talk about dismantling racism, rather we must take actions to be anti-racist. This podcast features authors Sara K. Ahmed, author of Being the Change, Dr. Sonja Cherry-Paul, who most recently co-wrote Breathing New Life into Book Clubs and the educator’s guide to Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You, and Cornelius Minor, author of We Got This. Since this conversation first aired in June of 2017, all have published books, podcasts, talks and professional development events on diversity, equity, inclusion, and being anti-racist.Before we begin, a message to my fellow white educators: we ask you to do the work that’s necessary to disrupt whiteness and white supremacy within yourselves, your classrooms, and schools. We ask white educators to commit to doing this work now and long after the media coverage of this latest viral bout of racism.Seek out the work of these authors and other Indigenous, Black, and other People of Color. Follow them on social media, support them by buying their work and attending their events, amplify their voices and never stop educating yourself. Here now is our conversation from 2017 with Sara K. Ahmed, Dr. Sonja Cherry Paul and Cornelius Minor…

This episode continues my series about the history of Russian cities which I have visited.  Here I introduce the Russian Federation's territorial structure, including its constituent "subjects" - republics, oblasts, krais, okrugs, and so on. This subject is important because when I discuss Russian cities in this series, I will also talk about the subjects of which they are part.  Thus, it will be helpful to understand how these subjects fit into the Russian system. Update June 13, 2019: I wish to clarify something that I might not had made clear in this episode.  This point is about the former Russian Soviet Federal Socialist Republic's (RSFSR) federal structure during the Soviet era.  In the episode I mentioned that the RSFSR contained within it some Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republics (ASSRs), such as the Tatar ASSR.  I will clarify by adding the fact that this was not the only type of federal subject within the RSFSR.  Just like in the modern Russian Federation, the RSFSR also contained oblasts, in addition to the ASSRs.

In what was maybe the most controversial and unethical psychological experiment of all time, psychologist Philip Zimbardo turned average university students looking for a summer job into either dehumanizing bullies or hapless victims. The only thing more ethically murky than the experiment itself is it's explanations of past history and it's implications for the future. This is the Stanford Prison Experiment. Read more about the Stanford Prison Experiment and check out videos here Update June 2018: In recent weeks, criticisms of the experiment have become public that cast doubt on the integrity and implications of the Stanford Prison Experiment. Perhaps I'll release an episode discussing this in the future once the dust settles, but for now decide for yourself by reading some of the criticism here: https://medium.com/s/trustissues/the-lifespan-of-a-lie-d869212b1f62 And read Philip Zimbardo's response here: http://www.prisonexp.org/response/ Support the podcast: https://www.patreon.com/reflectinghistory Reflecting History on Twitter If you like the podcast and have 30 seconds to spare, consider leaving a review on iTunes...It helps!
