It's Christian Rock Summer! This is the second episode in a month long exploration of the fringes of Christian music with Josh Christianson joining Josiah as co-host. We're talking "not a Christian band, just Christians in a band." We're talking Christianity being more of a relationship than a religion. On today's episode, Nathan Thiessen (@NateT93) joins Josh and Josiah to talk about the post-hardcore band, Emery, and the podcast it gave birth to: Bad Christian. They discuss the band's role in the world of Christian alternative music, the complex relationship with purity culture in their early lyrics, and the way that they represented something of an off-ramp for many young people within conservative evangelicalism, including Josiah and Nate. The Christian entertainment industry is a strange beast. Is it a ministry, is it a business, is it just preaching to the choir, is it a fast pass to moderate monetary success? To answer some of these questions I went to someone who has been a personal creative influence of mine for almost half of my life and who has been (not entirely intentionally) a part of the Christian entertainment biz that whole time, Toby Morrell of Emery and Bad Christian. It was a really fun and chill conversation and, where 16 year old Dan would have fan-boy’d out over this guy, 30 year old Dan just appreciates the honor of chatting with a childhood hero and getting to pick his brain a bit on the current state of things. Toby and the Bad Christian guys also have a documentary in the works titled, What Would Jesus Sell that will inevitably dig into a lot of the topics that we covered in this conversation. For more information on that, Toby’s bands, his podcasts and everything else, just check out the links below. Seriously though...maybe houses? Dude was a great carpenter. But on a serious note, we have a great episode for you , congregation. Jed brings on his best friend Brad (and Eric annoyingly in the backdrop)because he was having a rough day and needed a pick me up..they discuss opium dens and Benjamin Franklin quotes. Then Jed had an amazing talk with James Wightman...director/producer of the forthcoming documentary "What Would Jesus Sell?" which is a fact-facing and blunt look at the 'Christian Contemporary Music' scene in all of it's rawness. I'm very much looking forward to it. Kevin Max showed interest right away in our documentary "What Would Jesus Sell," so we got him on to talk about why that piqued his interest, and how he's seen the Christian music industry change throughout his career. We also reflect on the death of "America's Pastor" Billy Graham.
