In this episode I want to boil those frustrations down into 5 main things that get on my nerves. Summary In this conversation, Tim Whitaker and Leah Payne, PhD. discuss her book, God Gave Rock and Roll to You, that outlines the origins and impact of contemporary Christian music (CCM). They explore the power of music in religious experiences and the potential for manipulation in revivalist moments as well as the complicated relationship with problematic artists and the ethical dilemma of singing their songs.  Takeaways Contemporary Christian music (CCM) has a diverse range of genres and subgenres, making it difficult to define and categorize. The use of music in political and nationalist movements can be both inspiring and concerning, as it can rally people around a cause. Any assessment of Contemporary Christian Music in the 1980s and 90s would have to include the name Steve Camp. His first national release, “Sayin' It With Love,” topped the then fledgling Christian charts in 1978, 45 years ago.  He put out a steady stream of top selling albums and singles for the next 20 years. But in 1998 he did something that amplified his influence far beyond the Christian music scene. While on tour in Europe, he visited the church where Martin Luther posted his 95 Theses, an event that many say ushered in the Reformation. Camp sent out his own 107 theses on Reformation Day (October 31), 1998, calling for a reformation in contemporary Christian music: calling Christian musicians to make direct, uncompromising music that confronts the world with the message of the scriptures. Camp's 107 Theses was widely covered at the time in Christian media, and some of the ideas he introduced are being hotly debated even today. So when I heard that Steve Camp had a new album out, his first in more than 15 years, I could not resist the opportunity to have a chat with him. We talk about his new album, “Neighbors in an Age of Rage,” and his work as a pastor of a church in Florida. By the way, you can find Steve Camp's 107 Theses here. FINAL THOUGHTS If you enjoy interviews such as this, please consider supporting MinistryWatch.  I'm recording this on “Giving Tuesday,” and I know that many of you will be supporting us today. I'm grateful for that. But please know that our needs go on year-round, and we'd love to hear from you any time. In fact, I have a special challenge for you today. I suppose the simplest way to break down the issue with the modern debate over Christian Music comes down to 3 questions: What Are You Glorifying? What Are You Offering? Why Are You Doing These Things? What are you glorifying? What I mean by this question is several things: Are you glorifying God, Man, or Feelings? Is our focus during worship on our feelings and emotions or is it upon the Lord? Are we in the same state of mental release as we would be in a stadium while listening to our favorite band, or are we in a state of gratitude and exaltation towards our Abba Father? In the same vein, are we focused on the person or people leading the worship as much or more so than the God whom we claim we are praising? When we clap our hands, are we exalting the work and being of our Heavenly Father or are we exalting the musicians? Why do we hold our worship services the way we do? Are we facilitating worship or attempting to increase numbers for numbers' sake? Are we building a place of worship or a place of entertainment? These are issues within the Church's walls, but these same questions can be asked of any of the songs and hymns that we sing within the Church's walls. Does this song focus upon God or the sinner? Does it glorify God, or an experience? Why are we bringing this song before God? Does it sound like an offering of penance, praise, worship, or glory? What I mean by that is: Does this song make an offering to God the Father that is focused on Him, or does it sound like we're talking about ourselves? Many songs, whether old or new, don't pass the sincerity test. However, as many or more fail the theological sniff test. Whether we like it or not, some people walk away from a service with more from the worship service than they do from the sermon. Why then, would we allow poor or false doctrine into the service via a poorly or incorrectly constructed song? Would you allow a false teacher to preach from the pulpit? Would you read his sermon? If not, then why would you sing the songs of someone beholden to such doctrine? People like Bethel, Hillsong, and Elevation hold to the Prosperity Gospel, why would we entertain their doctrine by singing their songs in front of our children and more importantly, our God? Again, why are we doing these things? If we're singing to offer praises to God, would we not want the best of doctrine in the songs that we sing as an offering of praise?(At the same time, being concerned about false teachers, should we not be concerned about false prophets. Those that are weaving the "New Age" beliefs into Christianity, like Bethel, have mislead Christians into believing that supernatural powers just need to be harnessed. As with the direction of CCM, the worship of one's self is being preached and written about in books. CCM must be analyzed before being brought into one's church also a through background check done on all worship leaders concerning the music they have sang.)The final issue that tends to stand out in the Contemporary Christian Music world is that there is an incredible amount of reverence and respect towards the people who author these songs. It's an attractive position to be a CCM singer or author. In the infamous interview with a reporter, Katy Perry mentioned that she had released a Gospel Album, but “That didn't work out, so I sold my soul to the Devil.” Now, all of the issues with that statement aside, there's an allure to the borrowed favor and fame that the CCM title gives people's work. People who may be fine Christians with room to grow are put on the spot and fail miserably, I'm looking at you Lauren Daigle. These too are a tragedy. While there's nothing wrong with new songs by nature of their newness, not all old or new songs are created equal. We should carefully examine the words that we offer our Holy God as offerings of praise. Note, all of this needs to be done in light of grace.Katy Perry Interview:https://youtu.be/8ZGoixVlrKEhttps://www.youtube.com/live/gvEji9_P6bw?feature=share https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=atamvkV0V_w

We welcome the beautiful and amazing Linda Septien who is truly one of the best voice instructors in the world. She is the CEO and Founder of Septien Entertainment Group in Addison, Tx.She has over 35+ years of experience, whose success is measured by the number of successful pop icons she has prepared, trained and helped launch into thriving careers. Named on the cover of the Dallas Observer as the “Kingpin of Pop Talent, Linda is the forefront authority on all phases of launching an artist's career including vocal technique, vocal disorders, vocal production, stage presence, vocal branding and viral marketing for all ages of artists. With over 17,287 students to her legacy, including branded icons Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, Kacey Musgraves, Kidz Bop, Ryan Cabrera, Leon Bridges and Jessica Simpson, among other “cash producing” artists, Linda prides herself on her ability to recognize talent & create an effective development strategy to launch a branded long term career artist.Linda was born and raised in Louisiana by a family of musicians and her now 96 year old mother who still performs Ragtime. She has a nephew who is in a band called Midlake that is signed on the Tupac Label. Both her sons Remington and Huntington are musicians as well. Linda tells us what it means to be an opera singer and that they hire you by your voice. She travelled all throughout Italy and Croatia and became a DIVA! Thinking she was all that in her late 20's she returned to Nashville and decided to record a commercial pop album, only to be told by the producer that she was absolutely terrible. He told her to become a Diesel Sniffer "GROUPIE" to learn what it truly takes. She toured with N'Sync for a while, Rolling Stones and anyone she could find - she started studying all the artists in detail and she wrote books on why the audience looked at these Stars and what caused that phenomenon. While she studied all these people she realized that this was not her at all and decided to teach and give all her knowledge to others instead. She tells us about The "IT" factor and how things change in music and gives us the example of Dance Monkey who put an effect on her voice and it became the Number 1 song worldwide for an entire year. Linda made her home in Dallas because her ex husband Rafael Septien, who she met in college was signed with the Dallas Cowboys. They were together for 15 years. She started teaching out of her home and then opened a small studio. Jessica Simpson was one of her first students whose Dad brought her to Linda because Jessica was the only one that didn't make the Mickey Mouse Club audition. At the time Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake, Jay-Z and Britney Spears had all made it. We learn all about Jessica's start in the Christian Music Industry and why the Christian audience didn't accept her. We hear about a mishap that happened to her during her opening performance for Ricky Martin in Madison Square Garden. Working with Colombia and Sony Records made Linda really well known and she got Beyonce and everyone that Sony was using back then. What really put her on the map was Daniel Coile who wrote the New York Bestseller TALENT CODE, who was at her studio for 6 weeks to study how she creates and teaches these amazing artists. They were on Nightline and PR took over and because her story was the most interesting they got the most PR and attention. Everyone needs to read the book. Linda says that if her students don't have the work ethic there is not much she can do. She can tell them everything she knows but ultimately they still have to do all the work. She tells us about a studentthat was the most talented she has ever had, who refused to do the extra work and she tore up her contract and stopped working with her. Linda talks about Matthew McConaughey book GREEN LIGHTS and that everyone needs to listen to it on audible and it will make you successful. In today's world you have to have personality to go along with your musical talent and that the ones that are most successful are the ones that do not care about what others think. That is what it takes. Linda has sang the National Anthem over 1000 times at Dallas Mavericks and Dallas Stars games to mention a few. stay tuned to Part 2 where we talk about The other side of Fame, the Metaverse, NFT's, Demi Lavato etc ..................

"I wrestle not against flesh and blood." (David Dark's Ephesians 6:12 mantra) / According to David Dark (Belmont University), each of us occupy a variety of robots—roles, titles, occupations, institutions, conglomerates, ways of being, social norms, etc.—and these robots exert a cultural force, sometimes benign, but then again, sometimes violently destructive and degrading of human life. And in order to appreciate and honor our shared humanity, those of us in violent, impersonal robot systems need to be softly, humanely, respectfully, lovingly exorcised from those violent systems. David Dark joins Evan Rosa to talk about his idea of "Robot Soft Exorcism"—a metaphor-slash-parable-slash-theory-slash-way-of-life—that he uses to explain and expound non-violent resistance and prophetic witness. Along the way, they discuss the righteous skepticism he was raised on, the blurry secular-sacred divide, how he met Henri Nouwen, the technological ethics of Jacques Ellul, the real meaning of turning the other cheek, and the constant need to divest ourselves of the power of our positions, our titles, our platforms ... our robots.About David DarkDavid Dark is an American writer and cultural critic; and is Assistant Professor of Religion and the Arts at Belmont University in Nashville, TN. Curious what the Christian music industry is REALLY LIKE? Never quite fit into Christian culture? You little rebel, you. Allow me & my guest, Lauren DeLeary, to hold space for us to question everything about evangelicalism & discuss deconstruction & reconstruction. I am so excited to have my dear friend and fellow spiritual influencer, Lauren DeLeary, on Enlightened the podcast. Lauren is an artist and creator. She writes about her human experience as a spiritual being. Since leaving the Christian Music industry, she has deconstructed her faith and taken her audience on this journey through her podcast, DECONSTRUCT, which she co-hosts with her husband, Adam. She is passionate about researching and respecting many world-views, as well as exploring her own Native American culture and spirituality.  Today’s show covers topics like: The "dark side" of the Christian music industry How women are sexualized and policed in Christian culture How purity culture effected us and other women  Going from evangelicalism to progressive Christianity to spiritual fluidity How podcasting helps us heal and process our religious trauma Decolonization and why it matters today Brown lives matter, so why are indigenous women missing? Lee's experience in the Christian Music Industry, working with artists such as MercyMe, Phil Wickham, Paul Baloche, Bebo Norman, Rush of Fools, Tenth Avenue North, Newsboys, Third Day, and many others, led him to think that there should be a way for churches of any size to have a more powerful sound in their worship music. After the idea had been formed, Lee designed the app over the course of a year! Now, as part of the MediaComplete Family, Worship Band in Hand has joined a company that strives to equip churches with all the tools they need to add another dimension to their worship.
