TENE revisits the Orthodox Christian "punk zine" Death to the World, by reviewing the 2025 book Punk to Monks: The Story of Death to the World 'Zine. Boris compares the official narrative to the far more grim reality of abuse, cover-ups, fake churches and a surprising connection to a 1960s New Age cult. With something being filmed just outside the studio we're lucky Elis and John made it in for today's episode. John was very nearly accosted to fill the leading role, and Elis was just about able to peel his eyes away from potential live blunders. Thank goodness for the boys' dedication to #content.Away from the glitz and glamour of a film set, Elis and Dave have both been battling with bed bugs, one with a more incendiary technique than the other...The Cymru Connections is back, a great Made Up Game is played, and there's even some live crosswording.Send in your thoughts, feelings and reflections to elisandjohn@bbc.co.uk, or WhatsApp the show on 07974 293 022.

Send us a textFrom a "dirty punk" being shamed in his Newcastle school assembly to sharing a beer with the Sex Pistols, Johny Brown lived the explosive birth of UK punk. But that was only the beginning. In this episode of Tales of a Disappearing City, Johny takes us on a wild journey through underground culture. He recounts jumping out of his window to escape being grounded for a TV appearance, only to be handed a ticket to a Sex Pistols gig in Middlesborough by Steve Jones himself. We follow him to London, where he immersed himself in the squatting scene, the industrial noise of Test Department, legendary clubs like The Beat Route and Flim Flam, and the anarchic warehouse parties of the Mutoid Waste collective. This is a story of creative reinvention, from homemade clothes and experimental cassette tapes to forming the beloved band Holy Joy, launching a groundbreaking radio show on Resonance FM, and creating avant-garde theatre. It's a firsthand account of 80s and 90s London, a city of chaos, community, and relentless creativity, and a powerful reminder to always "keep the faith".Some great subcultural links mentioned in this episode:https://www.boredteenagers.co.uk/speed.htmhttps://briangibson.yolasite.comhttps://www.instagram.com/cindy_stern_11/https://www.instagram.com/soulboyssoulgirls/Support the showhttps://www.youtube.com/@ControlledWeirdnesshttps://open.spotify.com/artist/20nC7cQni8ZrvRC2REZjOIhttps://www.instagram.com/controlledweirdness/https://controlledweirdness.bandcamp.com/Theme song is Controlled Weirdness - Drifting in the Streetshttps://open.spotify.com/track/7GJfmYy4RjMyLIg9nffuktHosted from a South London tower block by Neil Keating aka Controlled Weirdness. Tales from a Disappearing City is a chance for Neil to tell some untold subcultural stories from past and present, joined by friends from his lifelong journey through subterranean London. Neil is a veteran producer and DJ and has been at the front line of all aspects of club and sound system culture since the mid 80's when he first began to go to nightclubs, gigs, and illegal parties. His musical CV includes playing everywhere from plush clubs to dirty warehouses as well as mixing tunes on a variety of iconic London pirate radio stations. He has released music on numerous underground record labels and was responsible for promoting and playing at a series of legendary early raves in the USA at the start of the 90's. He still DJ's in the UK and throu...
Happy Thanksgiving, everyone — it's James from SurvivalPunk.com, and today's episode is a little different. This is our Thanksgiving Rerun Special, not a repeat of recipes or turkey tips, but a deep look at how Americans held onto Thanksgiving through one of the hardest eras in our history: The Great Depression.
On this episode of What a Great Punk, we hang with Ben Greenberg — producer of our new album Godspeed and guitarist of Uniform (and many other bands!). We cover everything from NYC's current scene and Ben's recent run of shows as guitarist of Dazzling Killmen, to what really goes into crafting a Uniform setlist and working in the studio on Godspeed. Along the way, we dive into his work in film and TV, the “do whatever the fuck you want” ethos, navigating the attention machine, and his work on with one of our favourite bands, Institute. It is with heavy hearts that we present this week's episode as a tribute to Paul Daniel "Ace" Frehley. The rock 'n' roll icon, legendary guitar god, and former KISS guitarist, passed away on October 16, 2025, after suffering a fall in his home studio weeks earlier. Kevin has a profound connection to KISS and Ace as a lifelong fan and proud member of the KISS Army. While not an obscure artist by any means (the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer had 10 gold records, 5 multi-platinum records with KISS, and a platinum solo album), the duo tries to share some lesser-known songs, including a few crazy guest appearances. Excuse Kevin's extensive ramblings about the great Space Ace, but this loss was hard, and the tribute is necessary. Ace was a true character, who played a character, and played with character. A genuine original. A true rock star.New to InObscuria? Typically, what we do is exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. In the case of this particular episode, we are leaning towards the FORGOTTEN. Although a member of a band that holds the RIAA distinction of having the most gold-certified albums overall by any American band is hardly forgotten… In any case, we are paying tribute to one of the greatest guitarists of all time! Rest In Peace, Ace. There will never be another like you!Songs this week include:Criss – “Bad Attitude (feat. Ace Frehley)” from Cat #1(1994)Anton Fig – “Know Where You Go (feat. Beastie Boys' Anthology: Sounds of Science, Michael Diamond (Mike D) says: “We had all been influenced by Lee Perry's productions. We were into how on reggae recordings there would often be a ‘dub version' on the b-side of a single, a practice that got co-opted by a few punk and early hip-hop singles as well.” Who knew? When their debut “License To Ill” was released in 1986, almost 40 years ago - it was fresh and had a great sense of humour, playfullness that on the surface could be disregarded as white-boy rap, but if you took a close listen you'll notice the attention to detail in the music - the use of sampling, 808 Drum Machine, experimentation, mixing and overall production - this was groundbreaking. The lads and Rick Ruben had crafted something unique that had not been done before. In 1985, it was Run-DMC, Schoolly D, and LL Cool J, but by 1986, hip-hop had begun to transform, and part of that was due to this release. They'd pulled together all the elements of their musical inspirations, Run-DMC, WWF Wrestling (Rick Ruben is a known superfan of the sport), The Clash, Dub, Punk, along with a frat-boy, teenage FU attitude. They'd taken hip-hop to a level while still paying homage to those they'd learned from, borrowed from, sampled from and absorbed. Within the following year, you'd have more groundbreaking releases from Boogie Down Productions, Marley Marl & The Mighty Public Enemy. On their 1998 album Hello Nasty, Lee Perry is on “Dr Lee, PhD. Perry's fingerprints are evident: spring reverb, echo throws, and that cosmic feel only he could bring. They also collaborated with Mad Professor (the recording in question is the unreleased dub instrumental album that Mad Professor and the Beastie Boys made, presumably at some point between the releases of Ill Communication and Hello Nasty) from Beastiemania.com. Dub has woven its magic thread throughout so many styles of music, not to mention launching entirely new genres via direct inspiration and use of dub techniques and sampling, that we shouldn't be surprised to see that same link with the Beastie Boys. In 1973, a band formed that would be an integral part of new emerging music genres. That band is Devo, and the new genres are New Wave and Punk. Rock n Roll had apparently ruled the airways for long enough. In the early 1970s, the splitting asunder of the megalithic, guitar-driven Rock genre began to (more...)
We're joined in Cozumel, Mexico for a very special, long awaited conversation with Coheed & Cambria vocalist/guitarist: the great Claudio Sanchez. We discuss Claudio's journey through music discovery and picking up the guitar long before Coheed, how a trip to Paris birthed "The Amory Wars" concept, the real life events and tragedies that inspired each album's concept, existing outside of genres and scenes, the immediate impact of "Welcome Home" and the writing/recording processes from "The Second Stage Turbine Blade" all the way to "The Father of Make Believe" -- a truly phenomenal episode with one of modern music's greatest guitar players and songwriters. Thank you to Claudio for joining us and for having us on the S.S. Neverender. We are one among the fence.______________________ Edited by Steven Grise (@iamoneonenineseven) • Title sequence by Nicholas Marzluf (@marzluf) HardLore: A Knotfest Series Join the HARDLORE PATREON to watch every single weekly episode early and ad-free, alongside exclusive monthly episodes: https://patreon.com/hardlorepod Join the HARDLORE DISCORD: https://discord.gg/jA9rppggef Cool links: Get 15% off DUNABLE GUITARS with code HARDLORE from now until Christmas: https://dunableguitars.comGet 15% OFF @manscaped + Free Shipping with promo code HARDLORE at MANSCAPED.com! In this special mini-episode of Caught on the Mike, host Mike sits down with the legendary Angelo Moore — frontman of Fishbone, creator of Dr. MadVibe, and one of the most influential voices in ska, punk, and funk culture. Recorded while Angelo was literally taking a break from vacation, this shorter-than-usual conversation still packs all the energy, insight, and soul you'd expect from a man who has spent his life bending genres, breaking boundaries, and inspiring generations of musicians. Angelo talks about his early years in Southern California, the origins of Fishbone, his evolution as Dr. MadVibe, and the creative fire behind the band's latest work — including their acclaimed album Stockholm Syndrome and their explosive KEXP live session. A quick hit with a true icon. A legend who needs no warm-up. A conversation you won't want to miss.
Hey, it's James from SurvivalPunk.com, and it's a cool 55-degree morning here as I cruise at metaphorical 40,000 feet thinking about one of the biggest, nastiest, most rigged disasters in America today: the housing market.
Good morning, it's James from SurvivalPunk.com, and it's a warm-ish 60 degrees today. We're heading into Thanksgiving week, and if you're a prepper who pays attention, this is one of the best times of the entire year to restock your pantry, fill your freezer, and score ridiculous deals the grocery industry practically throws at you.
Hey, it's James from SurvivalPunk.com, and it's a humid 63-degree Tennessee morning — perfect weather to dig into something fun, creative, and surprisingly practical: your apocalypse uniform. Now, we don't go full doomsday fantasy here on Survival Punk, but sometimes it is fun to wander into Crazylandia — as long as we bring back something useful.

Punk rock and Chinese medicine might seem worlds apart, but both pushed back on dominant systems. Punk challenged the mainstream music industry; Chinese medicine, the dominance of biomedicine. Each created space for alternative voices, for people questioning authority and rewriting the rules. In this conversation with Tyler Phan, we explore how rebellion, identity, and power intersect in the making of American Chinese medicine. His research looks at how a healing tradition that arrived through the Chinese diaspora was caught by the imagination of white countercultural movements, shaped by state regulation, and often distanced from the very communities that carried it here.Listen into this discussion as we unpack Foucault's ideas of power, the counterculture's fascination with the East, the formation of professional standards, and how the DIY ethos of punk still hums beneath it all.Tyler's perspective challenges us to see that medicine is never just about healing—it's also about who gets to define what counts as knowledge, and who that power ultimately serves.

Patti Smith, “the Godmother of Punk,” has lived a wild life and accumulated so much wisdom in the process. In the 1960s and '70s, Smith was a fixture of the New York City creative scene — hanging out with the likes of Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Allen Ginsberg and Robert Mapplethorpe. Merging her own poetry with an ace backing band, she became a global rock star. Then she gave it up, moved to Michigan, raised a family, and remade herself into a best-selling author. Her stunning memoir “Just Kids” won the National Book Award and is one of the books that I've kept returning to, again and again. There is clearly something unusual about Smith. People who know her have described her as “shamanistic.” But even for those of us who will never become rock stars, there's something inspiring — and oddly relatable — in how she thinks about life. So I was excited to have the opportunity to sit down with her and learn more.Smith is out with a new memoir, “Bread of Angels,” and is on tour for the 50th anniversary of her breakthrough album, “Horses.” We talk about that book and that album and so much more: the boundless curiosity that drives her; the books that shaped her; her childhood communion with a snapping turtle; what Andy Warhol was like; what color she thinks the soul is; and a lot more that's hard even to describe. This episode contains strong language.Mentioned:“Pan's Labyrinth” by Guillermo del ToroGrimm's Complete Fairy Tales by Jacob Grimm and Wilhelm GrimmBread of Angels by Patti SmithJust Kids by Patti Smith“The Dark Blot” by Gérard de Nerval“Genie” by Arthur Rimbaud“Guernica” by Pablo Picasso“The Last Supper” by Andy WarholBook Recommendations:The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo CollodiFrankenstein by Mary ShelleyThe Poetry of Sylvia Plath Edited by Claire Brennan2666 by Roberto BolañoThoughts?
