Brad Zerbo and Jaytriot continue their deep dive into punk history, this time exploring the birth of the UK scene that reshaped music forever. From the Ramones' 1976 trip to London that inspired a wave of bands, to the meteoric rise and infamous flameout of the Sex Pistols, the hosts trace how punk spread like wildfire across England. They unpack the chaos of the Pistols' U.S. tour, the Clash's call-to-arms anthems, and the Damned's pioneering single that sparked the indie revolution. Along the way, they highlight the Buzzcocks' pop-punk blueprint, Billy Idol's early days with Generation X, and trailblazers like X-Ray Spex and Siouxsie and the Banshees who brought women and new sounds into the fold. With stories of Sid Vicious' onstage antics, vampire obsessions, saxophone-driven rebellion, and the Sex Pistols trolling the Queen's Jubilee, this episode captures the danger, fun, and lasting influence of punk's UK explosion.

Punk music branched out in the late 70s / early 80s into a harder, faster, thrashier style than its earlier predecessor. If (as is often claimed) the original wave of punk was a reaction to the complexity of prog and the lack of danger in other forms of popular music, then hardcore was the next phase of that during the era of post-punk. It was about catharsis and screaming out about injustice. Then there was Bad Brains. Welcome to episode 129 of See Hear Podcast. Tim has selected the 2012 documentary Bad Brains: A Band In DC for round table discussion. Bad Brains brought something different to the table for their time. In America in the early eighties, punk bands generally weren't playing reggae music as a regular part of their sets. Certain British bands were combining punk energy with a reggae outlook in their music. Bad Brains had gone from being influenced by the jazz fusion stylings of Return To Forever to being converted to punk via the Sex Pistols (already making them unique). Seeing Bob Marley perform made them convert to Rastafarianism and incorporate reggae as well as hardcore punk into their music – not a hybrid, but two sides of the same coin. The documentary goes back and forth between current day events (at the time of filming) and archival footage of the band to tell their story. We get a worrisome start with a “how-did-we-get-here?” approach to the rest of the film.....a trope I'm quite fond of. In a way, the Bad Brains tale could be the story of millions of bands, but they're seen as hugely exciting pioneers of what they do. Many important bands that followed sang their praises as an influence (Beastie Boys, Nirvana....) HR, their “lead throat” gradually became more and more unstable in his behaviour, and in a time where no one was using the expression “mental health”, his behaviour was probably explained away as “that's just HR”, rather than investigating if there was something wrong. Sadly, Kerry wasn't available, but Tim and I discussed positive mental attitudes, wearing motorcycle helmets on stage, not showing up to gigs, punk that wasn't nihilistic, and much more. The film may be found online at: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6e5wnw If you've been enjoying the show, please consider giving us a favourable review on iTunes and let your friends know that our show exists. Omar Sullivan (SO/SP 6w7 693) is an absolutely hilarious and insightful person, sharing how being a Type 6 and growing up with a loyalty to “doing the right thing” collided with an internal drive to poke holes in systems, ideologies, and even his own beliefs. We trace how a Type 6 mind pings between self-doubt and defiant clarity, often using humor as both camouflage and truth-teller—a sort of “jester's privilege” that lets him say what others won't. We talk about the contradictions within punk culture, the irony of the sustainability industry, and the emotional truths that surface when a 6 splits inward instead of seeking answers outside. We also touch on the mental gymnastics of manufacturing certainty, ego fixation in relationships, and how being “the man behind the memes” reveals the necessity of division before integration. This is a loaded conversation exploring the energy of 6, the comedy of self-awareness, and how creative life often begins at the fracture point.LINKSLearn at The Enneagram Schoolhttps://theenneagramschool.com/Intro Coursehttps://www.theenneagramschool.com/intro-enneagram-courseGet Typedhttps://www.enneagrammer.com/Sinsomnia Podcast (Dreams)https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/sinsomnia/id1684154994House of Enneagramhttps://www.youtube.com/@houseofenneagram TIMESTAMPS00:00 - Intro02:52 - Improv in college and creating a lasting impact, anti-elitism and 6 leadership, super-ego and doing the 'right thing'14:39 - Making self laugh, ping-ponging, the humor of 6w7, "the jester's privilege", irony and playing offense to play defense, 3w2 vs 3w4 exploration28:15 - Pointing out the contradictions and irony of the punk scene, so/sp call-outs within the culture, questioning authenticity 37:34 - Holding contradictions within self, community orientation of 6, finding resonances within 'scenes', frustration turns to the eternal seeker, taking things to the extreme to understand it45:02 - Creative tension: the duality of 6s, inner split exposing emotional truths in creativity, getting into Omar's novel and the so/sp 6 arch58:07 - Humor as a survival mechanism, intellectual and detached comparative to 'fighter', relationship to confidence and the 'dark truth'01:06:01 - Manufacturing a sense of certainty through the mental center, better understanding reality, feeling social stability versus rejection01:16:08 - Not pinning self to external explanation: bermuda's tuning inward, so/sp not contextualizing actions in the collective sense, being affected causing alienation01:21:57 - Reinventing self, 'letting loose', being creatively fueled through adventures, the mental imagery of crawling back to life01:31:19 - Navigating relationships and ego fixations, "the truth won't save you", 6 being the hell side of attachment type; roasting 6s01:42:34 - 6's splitting showing ugly necessity of division prior to integration, “the man behind the memes”01:47:57 - OutroCREDITSInterview by Josh Lavine Edited by Kristen Oberly Music by Coma-Media from Pixabay Coma-Media: https://pixabay.com/users/coma-media-24399569/ Pixabay: https://pixabay.com/ --- #enneagram #enneagramtypes #enneagram6

Few politicians produced the musical reaction that Ronald Reagan did. His California-branded conservatism inspired countless young people to pick up guitars and thrash out their political angst. Punk bands across the United States took aim at the man, his presidency, and the idea of America he was selling to voters nationwide. Small yet vibrant scenes across the country emerged to challenge the communal norms and social values projected on them by the popular media and consumer culture. Punk enthusiast Robert Fitzgerald argues that these songs' lyrics aren't just catchy and fun to scream along with; they also reveal the thoughts and feelings of artists reacting to their political environment in real, forthright, and uncensored time.In Hardcore Punk in the Age of Reagan (UNC Press, 2025), Fitzgerald shows how these lyrics illustrated what young adults felt and how they reacted to one of the most influential and divisive leaders of the era. Punk lyrics are seemingly simple, the author argues, but they sketch out a complex, musically inspired countermovement that is as canonical in the American songbook as the folk and rock protest music that came before. Robert Fitzgerald is a laboratory school administrator and a lifelong punk fan. Robert Fitzgerald on UNC Press's website. Every community has bad advice that gets repeated so often people start treating it like gospel. Prepping is no different. Today, I'm breaking down a couple of the biggest myths floating around Facebook groups and forums—the kind of nonsense that keeps people weak instead of making them stronger.
If you happen to follow me on social media (and why wouldn't you?) you have probably noticed that every week I post a collage of some of the albums I've listened to over the course of the week that I note as from “the Hudson Compound”. Well, tonight's show is an audio version of one of those collages. Every track I played tonight comes from a record that has either been on my turntable, in my earbuds during walks, or blasting in my car as I run errands. These 32 songs represent almost 60 years of great rock and roll, but there are a couple of somewhat new tunes. First off, earlier this week Rhino Records announced an upcoming box set version of my third favorite album of all time, Let It Be. The 3 CD/4 LP box, which comes out on October 24, includes an entire disc of rarities and outtakes and a full show from The Cubby Bear in Chicago. This announcement was accompanied by one of the outtakes – an alternate version of “Androgynous” that kicks off the show. The other new tunes (at least to me) comes right after that track. A few weeks ago our […]

This week, we get songs and stories from the road from the man whose amazing pipes were on 2 albums that shoulda been huge: Mr. Joel Ellis! His vocal delivery for Cats In Boots and the supergroup: Heavy Bones in the late 80s – early 90s was next level. We had the opportunity to chat, nay, listen to the man about his adventures and musical journeys from Cleveland to the Sunset Strip to Japan. Kevin learns a valuable lesson about not trying to control an interview with rock stars, and specifically not with lead singers. Jared Shavelson was raised in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, just outside of Philadelphia. His drumming journey stated early in life and got his first drumset at age seven. While playing in all of the local orchestras, marching bands, jazz bands, and theaters in southern New Jersey, he was taking weekly private lessons. During this time he was also starting to play out with his own bands, getting him heavily involved with the Philadelphia punk/hardcore scene. Leaving that area in 1999, he went to New York to attend college at SUNY Purchase studying jazz performance with greats like Ritchie Morales and Kim Plainfield. Jared completed 2 years at the Music Conservatory and left after his second year to start touring internationally with the Boston hardcore band The Hope Conspiracy. Soon after, he also began playing with the pop punk band None More Black, along with the political punk band Paint It Black. After living in New York City, Brooklyn, and Philadelphia, he now resides in Los Angeles where he started playing with more eclectic acts like Digital Daggers, Pure Love, The Rentals, The Aquabats, Meg Myers, Seal, Dark Waves, Cyn, Ways Away, Boysetsfire, Joyce Manor, The Bronx, Mariachi El Bronx, Chuck Ragan, Chase Atlantic, Ceremony, and many more. In this episode, Jared talks about: Where social media falls short Biking and drumming The impact of Jared's teachers early in life Parallels between jazz and punk/hardcore Punk, hardcore and the DIY scene The unique challenges of a band like Mariachi El Bronx Drumming for Seal Here's our Patreon Here's our Youtube Here's our Homepage

RHLSTP #576 - Dog Sharpener - A big storm is supposed to hit Edinburgh today, but so far it's just been a bit blowy, though maybe the storm will manage to make an appearance in the show. Richard is talking to comedian and rock star Andrew O' Neill. Will Rich remember to use the correct non-binary terms or will he fuck up immediately? Who knows? There's some great chat about changing attitudes to individuality, plus the comedic process, how surreal comedy is a rare skill and staying true to yourself, plus Andrew having to do a 90s style Edinburgh show because they broke their leg and have been on morphine, playing Jongleurs without compromising your act, the joy of connecting with one (and only one) audience member and how it's disappointing that TV just doesn't take a punt on interesting comedians any more.See Andrew's stand up show Escape here https://www.edfringe.com/tickets/whats-on/andrew-o-neill-escapeSee Andrew's History of Punk (but only if you like punk) here https://www.edfringe.com/tickets/whats-on/andrew-o-neill-s-history-of-punkSee RHLSTP live in Bewdley (and maybe elsewhere) http://richardherring.com/rhlstpSUPPORT THE SHOW!Watch our TWITCH CHANNELBecome a badger and see extra content at our WEBSITE See details of the RHLSTP LIVE DATES Buy DVDs and books from GO FASTER STRIPE Hosted on Acast.
