Many people wrestle with doubts. What is doubt? The Oxford Dictionary defines doubt as a feeling of uncertainty or lack of conviction. If a Christian were to experience a season of doubt around their faith, does that make them a bad Christian? Join host Andrew Marcus as he spends time with local youth pastor Payton Koop where they discuss the root of doubt, and how to navigate it in a way that honours God.
Dave Tomlinson joins us to reflect on his faith journey and how his evolving understanding of God has profoundly reshaped his approach to prayer. He explores the idea that prayer is for everyone, regardless of belief, advocating for the "democratisation" of prayer and sacraments. For Dave, these spiritual practices aren't confined to religious rituals but can be found in everyday moments, accessible to all. He invites us to reconsider the role of prayer in our lives, as a universal expression of connection and reflection. After the interview Nomad hosts Tim Nash and Nick Thorley reflect on Dave's understanding of prayer, and wonder if it has a place in their own evolving faith. Interview starts at 14m 50s Books, quotes, links → The creation of Nomad's thoughtful, wonderfully ad-free content is entirely funded by our equally thoughtful, wonderful listeners. It's Christian Rock Summer! This is the second episode in a month long exploration of the fringes of Christian music with Josh Christianson joining Josiah as co-host. We're talking "not a Christian band, just Christians in a band." We're talking Christianity being more of a relationship than a religion. On today's episode, Nathan Thiessen (@NateT93) joins Josh and Josiah to talk about the post-hardcore band, Emery, and the podcast it gave birth to: Bad Christian. They discuss the band's role in the world of Christian alternative music, the complex relationship with purity culture in their early lyrics, and the way that they represented something of an off-ramp for many young people within conservative evangelicalism, including Josiah and Nate. If you've never doubted your faith, you're lying!! Doubt can feel so heavy, so shameful, and pretty bad sometimes. But in reality, it's not the craziest thing in the world. In this episode Kim shares a part of her testimony that resulted in a radical encounter with Jesus, breaks down how the high of that moment made the lows extremely low, and shows us how John the Baptist, Peter, and Thomas all doubted Jesus (and they were with him daily!!) And in true Holy & Hormonal fashion, Kim sheds light on the fact that doubt can feel catastrophic in the luteal phase. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/holyandhormonal/support

[hosts contributing on this episode: Joey Svendsen, Stoy Prioleau, Amy Alderman, Robbie Madison, Matt Oxley, Jed Payne]Joey opens up about what he feels may be too much personal apathy about politics and voting. After sharing with a handful of the show's co-hosts on this one, he's met with more cynicism than he can handle. Four of the five present are convinced that the USA "political machine" doesn't care about people; only getting more votes for their team and acquiring more money and power. And the guilt that many Christians try to push onto those who aren't more involved in political activism isn't merited, nor fair, according to some of the Christians on this one. Please see this encore presentation of Episode 151: Am I a Bad Christian for Watching Hallmark Christmas Movies? that we did in December 2019 as the content itself is still applicable around this time of year. More than 85 million people in the U.S. are avid watchers of the Hallmark Channel's Christmas films. Complete with its own mobile App, Hallmark Christmas film fans can partake year-round in the romantic, true-love plots. Not just on the Hallmark Channel, but other on-demand viewing channels like Netflix have also gotten into the Christmas film game. All the films have the same plot, the same kiss, the same quaint small town, the same fake snow falling gently onto the shiny hair of the protagonist, the same easy “trouble” resolved in less than one scene, the cookie baking that magically cleans itself up, and the dead mother that the child remembers with fondness rather than gut-wrenching grief. What is a Christian to make of this phenomenon? And, more pressingly, should Christians themselves indulge in the occasional Hallmark movie or even a Hallmark Christmas movie binge? This Postmodern Realities episode is a conversation with Journal author Anne Kennedy about here viewpoint article, “Am I a Bad Christian for Watching Hallmark Christmas Movies?”. https://www.equip.org/article/am-i-a-bad-christian-for-watching-hallmark-christmas-movies/Viewpoint articles address relevant contemporary issues in discernment and apologetics from a particular perspective that is usually not shared by all Christians, with the intended result that Christians' thinking on that issue will be stimulated and enhanced (whether or not people end up agreeing with the author's opinion). For further information or to support the Christian Research Journal please click here. When you support the Journal, you join the team and help provide the resources at equip.org that minister to people worldwide. Most of the time, we would describe a “bad” Christian as somebody who doesn't read their Bible enough, doesn't worship as passionately as other Christians, and doesn't pray nearly as much as they feel like they should. Basically speaking, a Christian who doesn't feel like they do enough in their lives in order to warrant the title of being called a Christian. That's why I found it to be important to remember this key point whenever we feel like we're a “bad” Christian or feel like God doesn't love us anymore. There is no such thing as a “bad” Christian because there is no such thing as a “good” Christian. If you'd like to follow Jay Allen on Facebook, click here: https://www.facebook.com/jayallenliveYou can listen to more encouraging podcasts from the KCBI Podcast Network here: https://www.kcbi.org/podcasts/

Worship leader in an evangelical church, cousin of Brian Welch (Korn), struggler of bipolar disorder, and author, Scott W. Box, joins the show to discuss mental illness, grace and Heroic Disgrace, his recent book release in which he tells his story and unpacks the gospel concept of "winning by losing." We also discuss how God can make healthy what He chooses not to heal, and how Scott's struggles with mental illness compelled him to seek Jesus deeper. Isn't that a good thing?Joey also reflects on his madness of reverting back to OCD spiritual rituals back in his mental health crisis in 2019 and how leaning on others' faith is necessary when personal faith has run dry. Can your brain ever be too unhealthy to process God in a positive light? Joey has experienced times when thoughts of God were a detriment. Two pastors reflect on their journeys through mental health crises and having personal experience, describe their experiences with being suicidal and how selfishness wasn't part of the equation. Ben Archer, Patron of the show (which means he's in the Bear W/ Community), joins Joey to talk deconstruction and reflect on BadChristian. And up top, a couple of my black friends reflect a bit on how Will Smith's actions was a poor representation of African-Americans. Scott W. Riding a unicorn. Losing weight on a cake-only diet. Not likely. If abusers are so unhappy with their victims, why don't they leave first? Because staying fits within the point of abuse: to control you. And unless he's discovered an excellent and easy alternative, you're an endless supply for your emotional abuser's selfishness. On top of that, if you're a Christian woman, he knows you take your vows seriously. He's counting on you to stick it out, no matter what. He's got “God” on his side. Finally, when he mistreats you, like any sane person or hurt puppy, you react, and it ain't pretty. You're so ashamed of your behavior. He knows it. So instead of focusing on the harm he's doing, you're consumed by what a failure—a raging, bitter wretch of a person—you feel like. And you wonder: Am I the abuser? You're stuck between a boulder (an impossible, destructive marriage) and a hard place (your paralyzing beliefs). What now? This episode is full of answers: Where I got $1.75 (and you can too!) Why your choice to stay or leave your abuser is less important than your reasons My relation to a judgy asshole (she looks like me, she sounds like me, but I swear, she isn't me…anymore) and the hope that should give you An abuser's approach to counseling and change versus a survivor's (one involves kicking and screaming) Two analogies to solve your shame and restore your power steering: dogs fighting and a locked car in a parking lot. I haven't cracked open my bible probably all of May and maybe you haven't either. Here's what Hebrews 5:11 says about how it feels to mature in our faith and maybe we've been looking at what it means to grow in our faith all wrong.
The conservative (and maybe Christian?) satire site Babylon Bee has had their Twitter account suspended for giving a trans woman their “Man of the Year” award. Babylon Bee says they're being punished for speaking the truth, but are they just being mean? And an essay in the Washington Post by Christine Emba says our sexual ethic of consent alone isn't working. Has she uncovered evidence that our secular culture is more receptive to Christian sexual ethics than we thought? Then Kaitlyn Schiess talks with author, poet, and English profess Daniel Bowman Jr. about his book, “On the Spectrum: Autism, Faith, & the Gifts of Neurodiversity.” Bowman, who is on the spectrum himself, dispels myths about autism and offers helpful ideas about how we can love those in our families and communities who are neurodiverse. “I invite you, therefore, in the name of the Church, to the observance of a holy Lent,” the pastor paused for breath and stretched out his hands to the congregation, trying by the power of his will to disbar the sleep from their eyes, for it was only seven in the morning, and a miracle that any of them were there at the appointed time. His voice called across the empty pews, “by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and almsgiving; and by reading and meditating on God's holy Word.” The assembled ten people, bilious from the carb-laden stupor of previous evening's Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper, wrestled their wandering minds to the liturgical mat and began to confess their sins.It is an ancient practice — the observation of Lent — and one that for many, especially in the apocalypse of COVID-19, is falling by the way. It is becoming a vestigial yet beautiful anachronism for which formerly religious people feel nostalgia, without being able to remember why they obeyed when the church called for their penitent attention. This Postmodern Realities episode is a conversation with Journal author Anne Kennedy about her online-exclusive article, “Haven't We All Sacrificed Enough: A Christian Tries to Observe Lent”. https://www.equip.org/article/havent-we-all-sacrificed-enough-a-christian-tries-to-observe-lent/Starting in February 2021, online-exclusive articles, have been locked and are only available for Journal subscribers as noted below; however, given the time sensitive nature and global importance of this subject, our editorial board decided to make this available to the public as soon as possible. “In any case,” writes Rachel Held Evans in the middle of her posthumously published work, Wholehearted Faith, “I wonder sometimes whether we're playing at death and calling it life.” In characteristic and prescient candor, at the time of her death, Held Evans was in the act of asking the peculiar and essential questions that strike to the heart of what it means to be a creature created by God. She was circling around the most elemental issues of Christianity, of death and life, of love and truth. In her last words, we find a legacy of doubt, the grief of a person who was putting her finger on the central point without yet acknowledging the Verity Himself—Jesus—standing before her. Along with the beautifully illustrated children's book, What Is God Like, Wholehearted Faith gives us a picture of what sort of god Held Evans was sketching out—not the God of the Bible, not of Jesus who makes that God known to us in the fullness of his astonishing and glorious mercy, but the god of ourselves. This Postmodern Realities episode is a conversation with Journal author Anne Kennedy about her online-exclusive article, “The Windswept Plains of the Heart: A Review of Wholehearted Faith and What is God Like.”https://www.equip.org/article/the-windswept-plains-of-the-heart-a-review-of-wholehearted-faith-and-what-is-god-like/Starting in February 2021, all online-exclusive articles, have had a early access window for Journal subscribers only before being made public.
